TV Guy 03-09-2020, 10:29 AM There were quite a few revivals of old Screen Gems/Columbia in the 1980s that didn’t make it past pilot stage. - “I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later” was a pilot for a revival. Only the TV movie aired - “Dennis the Menace”, a 1988 syndicated TV movie was going to lead to a new series, but never made it past the pilot. - “That’s My Mama Now” was a pilot for a syndicated revival with Ted Lange now in the lead. The pilot was produced but never aired. - Plans for a syndicated two-hour “Partridge Family” TV movie were scrapped when David Cassidy pulled out after verbally agreeing. Had it been produced, it would have doubled as a pilot for a series with Keith as a single father, performing as a duo with his teenaged daughter. JamesG 03-09-2020, 12:57 PM NBC scrapped their plans to bring back "Coach" in 2015 due to "creative differences". Craig T. Nelson and Bill Fagerbakke were set to reprise their roles and Shelley Fabares could not be a part of it due to health issues. Her character was going to be killed off. Coach Hayden Fox (Nelson) — now retired from coaching — is called back to become assistant coach to his grown son Tim (Andrew Ridings), who is the new head coach at an Ivy league school in Pennsylvania that is just starting up a new team. Where did you get the information that the "I Dream of Jeannie" movie was a pilot for a revival of the series. The movie did very well in the rating but I never saw any potential for a series reboot. Hagman was still doing Dallas, Rorke was too old, and Eden herself was in her mid50's, a little too old to be doing this kind of comedy. The movie was bad (they actually did a second one about 5 years later). MikeLutton 03-09-2020, 10:45 PM there was going be a honeymooners revivial to but it didn't happen all of these sound intresting you know i would of liked to have seen them. treky 03-10-2020, 02:03 AM Where did you get the information that the "I Dream of Jeannie" movie was a pilot for a revival of the series. JamesG 03-10-2020, 11:14 AM the middle was going to do a revival on Sue Heck. That was a spin-off, not a revival. JamesG 03-11-2020, 01:47 PM There was word around March 2018 that Nickelodeon was going to revive "Clarissa Explains It All" with series star Melissa Joan Hart raising a family. I met MJH at Nov. 2019's Christmas Con and she told me that Nickelodeon changed presidents and they felt that a "Clarissa" revival wouldn't work with their current programming. Also, "Lizzie McGuire" was due to get a streaming series on Disney+, but the plug was pulled after two episodes had been filmed. The creator left the series and Hilary Duff is trying to get another service, like Hulu, to pick it up. Hagman was still doing Dallas, Rorke was too old, and Eden herself was in her mid50's, a little too old to be doing this kind of comedy. The movie was bad (they actually did a second one about 5 years later). It was reported in the trades at the time that it was a back-door pilot. And if you watch the ending, where Jeannie talks about “a whole new beginning” after Tony’s memories of her are erased, you can see where a series would have picked up. Hagman wouldn’t have been in it, and Rorke certainly wouldn’t have been a regular. JamesG 03-30-2020, 06:23 AM ABC was going to do a new "NYPD Blue" series focusing on Andy Sipowicz' (Dennis Franz) son Theo. Fabien Frankel was cast in the role and he was going to be investigating his father's murder. Franchise vets Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup were also going to come back. The pilot was made but ABC did not pick it up around May 2019 because they felt that "the bar was too high" and they were working on retooling the series. The CW also passed on a revival of "The Game" in Jan. 2020 factsoflife 03-30-2020, 11:25 AM Linda Bloodworth-Thomason has reportedly been writing a "Designing Women" revival for sometime now but so far there has been nothing confirmed about. First, when The Goode Family started there was talk that the two shows would air back to back. But of course this didn’t happen. Since then the possibility gets brought up from time to time, but nothing yet. Jamey Greek 09-24-2021, 09:53 PM I would like to see the Coach revival pilot. Speaking of which, LA Law was going to be rebooted in 2016 with Steven Bochco and Bill Finklestein attached but it never got passed the pilot stage. I was looking forward to that more than I was the one ABC attempted last year. TMC 09-25-2021, 06:17 AM There was word around March 2018 that Nickelodeon was going to revive "Clarissa Explains It All" with series star Melissa Joan Hart raising a family. If they were to revive Clarissa, then they might as well put it on Paramount+ like the iCarly revival. There, they would have more liberty to be slightly more "adult" (not necessarily "R-rated" but edgier) with the storylines and dialogue. I think that this was one of Hilary Duff's problems with bringing back Lizzie McGuire. She wanted it to be more "adult"-like and edgier while Disney wanted to essentially, make it in the same tone and style as before. And going back to the subject of Clarissa, Melissa Joan Hart had previously attempted to revive the series back in 1995. The show would've aired on CBS and be called Clarissa Now. If you've ever gotten a chance to watch the pilot (it was first seen on Nickelodeon during their "Big Help-A-Thon) it wasn't very good and it's obvious why it wasn't turned into a series. It seemed like the show was trying to be like a '90s and I suppose, Gen-X version of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. For example, they had the comedian Robert Klein ostensibly play the Lou Grant role to Clarissa Darling's Mary Richards. Also, Clarissa here, doesn't come across as very intelligent (she seems more actively naïve and Pollyannaish instead of being a hip, smart young woman) here. TMC 09-25-2021, 06:21 AM VH1 announced in April 2015 that a new "The Osbournes" series had been scrapped. VH1 was also planning on doing a new version of The Partridge Family (https://gameshows.fandom.com/wiki/In_Search_of_The_Partridge_Family). It's only really notable now because a then unknown Emma Stone (then going by her real name, Emily Stone) was involved in it. She would've had it become a full-blown series, played the Laurie Partridge role (originated by Susan Dey). TMC 09-28-2021, 12:10 AM Where did you get the information that the "I Dream of Jeannie" movie was a pilot for a revival of the series. Hagman was still doing Dallas, Rorke was too old, and Eden herself was in her mid50's, a little too old to be doing this kind of comedy. The movie was bad (they actually did a second one about 5 years later). I don't know if I would necessarily say that Barbara Eden was "too old", unless you're suggesting that at that point, she seemed to "dignified" to be walking around in her pink harem outfit and playing an overgrown, clingy child. Even though it had been at least 15 years since the end of IDOJ, Barbara Eden (at least from my perspective), aged remarkably well: https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/aired-102085-pictured-barbara-eden-as-jeannie-picture-id138443458 Even when she appeared on Dallas (https://www.google.com/search?q=barbara+eden+dallas&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiNuo2J5KDzAhX18lMKHSjaC_wQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=barbara+eden+dallas&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIKCAAQsQMQgwEQQzIICAAQgAQQsQMyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDoHCCMQ7wMQJzoICAAQsQMQgwE6BAgAEEM6BAgAEAM6BwgAELEDEEM6CwgAEIAEELEDEIMBUML4E1i6xhRg1soUaAJwAHgBgAHQCIgB5h6SAQ0yLTEuMS4yLjIuMC4xmAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWewAQDAAQE&sclient=img&ei=XZNSYc2XNvXlzwKotK_gDw#imgrc=ITR-aLtJp3NCZM) with Larry Hagman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX_KT-CzCLQ), during its later years, she had this sophisticated cougar-vibe about her. AntennaTV2020 09-28-2021, 03:25 PM There were plans a few years ago the remake the Beverly Hillbillies, and Bewitched. Back in 2018, ABC was in talks for a supposed Bewitched Reboot from Blackish creator Kenya Barris with an interracial twist where Samantha was a single black mother who married a white man. The project never came through. Earlier this year Sony announced a new Bewitched movie based on the TV Series was in developement. AntennaTV2020 09-28-2021, 03:34 PM Also, "Lizzie McGuire" was due to get a streaming series on Disney+, but the plug was pulled after two episodes had been filmed. The creator left the series and Hilary Duff is trying to get another service, like Hulu, to pick it up. There was supposed to be continuing sequel series of Lizzie Mcguire at ABC right after the original show ended. Right after the theatrical film came out in the spring 2003, it was revealed that Lizzie McGuire would end production due to contract disagreements between Duff and Disney. Disney was interested in transitioning the program into a high school-centered series for ABC and expanding the franchise with a further film, while Duff was receiving offers for lucrative roles with other studios. After the series ended its original run, Disney Channel also considered producing an animated version of the series. In November 2004, a pilot for an intended spin-off was ordered, entitled Stevie Sanchez, which was to center on Miranda's younger sister and her Latino family. The series would follow the 12-year-old central character, who was played in the pilot by then unknown Selena Gomez, and would also feature an animated version of the character like Lizzie. It was to star LaLaine and be produced by Minsky and Rogow. The pilot was produced in 2005, but the series was not picked up in favor of Disney choosing Hannah Montana. AntennaTV2020 09-28-2021, 03:41 PM It was announced in August 2020 that a Who's the Boss sequel series starring Alyssa Milano and Tony Danza was in the works from Sony TV. It wasn't going to star Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd or anybody else associated with the original TV series. And instead of focusing on three women, it would've focused on four (most notably, Tea Leoni). And the world of modeling (which was touched upon a bit in the final season with Tanya Roberts' character) would've been a main focal point. Had it not been for the writers strike, then it would've been on Fox's fall 1988-89 schedule. But as it was, the show was never formally produced or filmed. JamesG 09-29-2021, 07:42 PM It was to star LaLaine and be produced by Minsky and Rogow. The pilot was produced in 2005, but the series was not picked up in favor of Disney choosing Hannah Montana. I was surprised by that as she seems to want to distance herself from "Lizzie McGuire". She didn't appear in the 2003 movie nor was she part of the more recent Disney+ revival that got scrapped. I have heard rumors that she and Hilary didn't get along, but nothing concrete. She did say a few years ago that she was made to look "as white as possible" in her earlier roles and struggled identifying w/ her Filipino heritage. Malik Yoba and Lauren Vélez were coming back for the new series where Yoba's J.C. Williams oversees a new group of detectives. It was announced in May 2019 that the series was not going forward. JamesG 11-09-2021, 10:09 AM Patrick Duffy announced in 2012 that he wanted to bring back his short-lived 70s series "Man From Atlantis". At the time he said that he had completed the first draft of a novel, which picks up 15 years after the series and explains the never-before-known origins of Mark Harris. He said that he wanted to write a trilogy and perhaps see the story adapted for the screen. The book came out in 2016 but the screen revival never happened. Mark Harris, the Man from Atlantis, has been quietly living under the protection of Dr. Elizabeth Merrill who saved his life in 1976. By studying his abilities the two have contributed countless advances for mankind’s development. Only a select few know his true identity: Jason the whiz kid of the science lab. Stacy the bright young intern – who is constantly flustered by Mark’s presence. Dr. Nagashima, a master of oceanic knowledge who Elizabeth lured from Japan to join her inner circle. Then their California ocean side laboratory is shaken when several attempts are made upon Mark’s life. He discovers the assailants have powers similar to his and he is lead into the uncharted depths of the oceans. As he discovers his past Mark’s origins and genealogy finally come to the surface. TMC 03-21-2022, 01:17 AM Star Trek: Phase II (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Phase_II) should be on here. It was conceived (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WhatCouldHaveBeen/StarTrek) in light of the original Star Trek series gaining a massive following in syndication (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVJV9m_3GkU) after it was canceled by NBC in 1969. All of the original cast was going to reprise their roles with the exception of Leonard Nimoy, who was on the outs with Paramount at the time. William Shatner was expected to come back but he was only guaranteed to appear in about the first ten episodes. Phase II would've been the flagship show on a new network (https://www.cbr.com/why-star-trek-phase-ii-didnt-happen/) called the Paramount Television Service (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramount_Television_Service). Ultimately, the plans for the network fell through and many of the concepts for Phase II, were used for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the subsequent Next Generation series. Also, after TNT's new "Dallas" took off, some "Falcon Crest" stars said in 2013 that they were approached for a new series. Actress Susan Sullivan (Maggie) said at the time that the new series was to focus on William Moses (Cole Gioberti) and David Selby (Richard Channing). TMC 06-29-2024, 05:47 AM I don't know if this has been brought up yet, but back in 1986-87 or so, there was talk of doing another spin-off of Three's Company called Three Apartments. The basic idea was to bring Norman Fell and Audra Lindley back as Stanley and Helen Roper. It would've if I have my facts straight, been a unique for its time "shared universe" type of show that would've combined characters from Three's Company, Three's a Crowd, and Too Close for Comfort. The idea for Three Apartments came about because the producers and syndicated distributors felt that they needed a show to replace what was then known as The Ted Knight Show (the revamped version of Too Close for Comfort) following the untimely death of Ted Knight in August 1986. But Three Apartments never came to be because of an already crowded syndication market and lack of advertiser interest. JamesG 10-06-2024, 04:23 AM First announced back in 2020, Amazon has announced that they pulled the plug on a new "Who's the Boss?" series. Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano were said to be reprising their roles w/ "One Day at a Time‘s" Mike Royce and Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz on board as writers/EPs. Norman Lear was also on board as an EP before his death. blueberrymuffin 10-06-2024, 08:22 AM I can't say I'm upset that the WTB revival isn't going forward. I hate the idea that Tony and Angela didn't stay together... JamesG 10-12-2024, 06:57 AM It was revealed that Reba McEntire's new sitcom "Happy's Place" was originally going to be a revival of "Reba". "Happy's Place" creator Kevin Abbott — who previously served as an executive producer and showrunner on "Reba" — said, “It all started from a reboot. We worked on a reboot, and we spent about a year on it. We had it fully worked out.” “I pitched it to all the old cast members, they were all on board… I pitched it to Disney, which owns the rights to Reba, and they were on board. They discussed it internally — that was right when Disney and Fox were merging, so there was a lot of uncertainty as to who was doing what — and when that all calmed down it came down to a business decision, and they decided not to do the reboot.” At that point, McEntire turned to Abbott and said, “‘Let’s do another show.'” https://tvline.com/lists/reba-reunion-happys-place-season-1-cast-release-date-nbc/happys-place-preview-1/ JamesG 10-18-2024, 09:40 AM Announced in April 2024, CBS was working on reviving "Cold Case" with original creator Meredith Stiehm. It would have been set 15 years after the final episode focusing on a new team of detectives. CBS said in Sept. 2024 that they were no longer working on it. Also, a new "Degrassi" series was announced for HBO Max in January 2022. It was to be helmed by showrunners Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen for a 2023 launch and was going to have hour-long episodes featuring new characters. HBO Max announced in November 2022 that the plans were cancelled. JamesG 10-24-2024, 04:50 PM Susan Olsen said that CBS expressed interest in doing a new "Brady Bunch" series after the success of HGTV's "A Very Brady Renovation" in 2019. According to her, CBS stopped plans due to her political beliefs and her disapproval of some characters. She said that she was questioned during the show’s early development about her politics by the revival’s showrunner Lloyd J. Schwartz, the son of original series creator Sherwood Schwartz. "I did have a phone call with my [TV] siblings and my agent. Everybody was saying, ‘We’re sorry, but they just won’t budge. They just will not have you in this.’ I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve been canceled.’ A role that I’ve played for over 50 years, I can’t play it now because I’m too dangerous. I was like ‘Well, okay guys, good luck, I hope you can sell it.’" She revealed that one of Jan’s children was going to be trans and one of the Bradys was going to have a Black spouse. She responded to that with, "Come on, let’s not be so obvious. Let’s make this Black spouse somebody who has a really close relationship with another Brady, and that’s how this Brady met them. Give them a foundation so this isn’t a token position.'" https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/brady-bunch-revival-killed-cbs-susan-olsen-trump-support-1236189909/ JamesG 11-17-2024, 08:21 AM It was announced in December 2020 that ABC, with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, were developing a primetime update of daytime soap "All My Children" called "Pine Valley". Robert Nixon, the son of creator Agnes Nixon, was also on board as an EP. The new series would feature a young journalist with a secret agenda coming to expose the dark and murderous history of Pine Valley, only to become entangled in a feud between the Kane and Santos families. Nothing has ever happened with this. JamesG 11-19-2024, 08:53 AM HBO announced in 2020 that they were developing a new "True Blood" series. "Riverdale" creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and "NOS4A2" creator Jami O’Brien co-write the pilot and Alan Ball, the original series creator, was also on board as an executive producer. Original cast members said at the time that they had no idea about its development until fans started bombarding them with questions when the plans were officially announced. HBO chief Casey Bloys said in 2023 that the plans had been called off. TMC 12-05-2024, 12:38 AM I can't say I'm upset that the WTB revival isn't going forward. I hate the idea that Tony and Angela didn't stay together... I think that I previously said in the Who's the Boss? forum that I'm kind of glad that the proposed revival isn't going forward. You already couldn't have Kathleen Helmond involved given that she has since passed away. Plus, it seemed more and more apparent that Judith Light wasn't going to be involved (at least not heavily) even though her character's relationship with Tony Danza's character was the heart of the original show. So it was just going to be Tony Micelli helping his newly divorced daughter, Samantha raise her kids in an absentee Angela's old house. So why is the show still called Who's the Boss? again!? I mean, they already tried to bring the series back at least twice (discounting of course, the 1970s variety hour show), The Brady Brides from 1981 and The Bradys from 1990, and they were both very short-lived. JamesG 12-13-2024, 11:06 PM LA Law was going to be rebooted in 2016 with Steven Bochco and Bill Finklestein attached but it never got passed the pilot stage. I was looking forward to that more than I was the one ABC attempted last year. I met Corbin Bernsen at Hallmark's Christmas Con and asked him about the "L.A. Law" reboot that didn't go forward. He said, "It was bad, that's putting it mildly. Terrible." I asked him if anything was filmed and he said, "Oh yeah, we filmed it. Then the footage got destroyed." I don't know if he was serious or joking. Jamey Greek 12-13-2024, 11:54 PM I met Corbin Bernsen at Hallmark's Christmas Con and asked him about the "L.A. Law" reboot that didn't go forward. The new series was said to be a single-camera action adventure comedy series set in present day focusing on the descendants of the original heroes, now scattered around the world, who team up for a global treasure hunt. Nothing happened with it. JamesG 07-03-2025, 06:05 PM It was announced in 2023 that John Cleese and his daughter, Camilla, were working on a new "Fawlty Towers" w/ Rob Reiner producing. It was to feature Basil Fawlty navigating the modern world with the daughter he never knew he had. Cleese was clashing with the BBC at the time and said that his new series would not air on it as they were "too woke". He also commented against them removing "offensive" episodes, such as 'The Germans'. Also, a new version of "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" was announced in 2021 for TBS w/ "Schitt’s Creek" actress Emily Hampshire. Norman Lear was also onboard as a producer and praised Hampshire for being perfect in the new role. There have been no updates and Hampshire was recently cast as E.D.I.T.H. in Marvel's "Vision" series. JamesG 08-25-2025, 11:21 PM Mayim Bialik has confirmed that plans for a proposed reboot of "Blossom" have been halted. According to Bialik, she and "Blossom" creator Don Reo discussed revisiting the series shortly after "The Big Bang Theory" ended in 2019. Reo quickly whipped up a script that brought everyone into the modern world, and as Bialik recalls, “He found our characters exactly where many of us find ourselves — funny, lost, wandering, meandering, and torn. The script is beautiful.” Unfortunately, following multiple mergers within the entertainment industry, new executives were put in charge of developing such things, and Bialik “was told the project was no longer able to be produced.” She and Reo met with the new executives and, “For no particular reason, we were told ‘no,'” Bialik says. “We asked for the rights so that we could let the market decide if audiences might want to see these characters all these years later. We were told Disney reserves the rights in case they ever want to do a reboot of Blossom. The reboot we all wanted to do was now, with Don’s script. We will likely never know … why they would not let us bring these beautiful stories to people who love 90s nostalgia and who have a special place in their hearts for Blossom.” https://tvline.com/news/blossom-reboot-cancelled-explained-mayim-bialik-reason-1235492494/ Jamey Greek 11-08-2025, 11:42 PM I would like to see the Coach revival pilot. Marc Summers of Double Dare stated in an interview that the movie Bring me the head of Dobie Gillis of which he served as a producer was going to be a 13-episode series if the movie went well but the movie did not do well so CBS pulled the plug on the series. JamesG 01-23-2026, 05:44 AM A new "The Brady Bunch" series was announced in July 2012 with Vince Vaughn and Lloyd Schwartz as executive producers. CBS ordered a script by Mike Mariano (Raising Hope, My Name is Earl), with the new series centering on a divorced Bobby Brady with children of his own. He gets remarried to a woman who also has kids, and together they also share a child. In addition, their ex-spouses are still part of their lives. Nothing happened with this.
