The groundbreaking MTV music show that premiered on Nov. 26, 1989 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUtmdAZ1QKQ) aimed to be the "anti-Milli Vanilli, for the guys and the girls that can really do it.” The first MTV Unplugged featured new wave legends Squeeze, singer-songwriters Jules Shear and Syd Straw, and Cars guitarist Elliot Easton. "Eventually," says Lyndsey Parker, "MTV Unplugged didn’t just change the lexicon. It changed music, television, and pop culture in general — introducing Eric Clapton and Tony Bennett to a new generation, helping hip-hop cross over, kickstarting the KISS reunion, and inadvertently memorializing Kurt Cobain."
