In a very early episode (season 1, episode 3), Jim's family had a cat named Mr. Feeny who died. My mom and I both thought of Boy Meets World (hey LAFF, add that to your schedule!) when the cat's name came up. Later on it was revealed that Mr. Feeny was named after a former lover of Cheryl's before she was married to Jim. Feeny's first name was not George though, which would have been an even bigger BMW connection. I don't know if the According to Jim writers were thinking of Boy Meets World or not, but it was also the same network with one show ending a year before the other one started.
