Season 3 has finally come to DVD. CBS has released both volumes as MOD releases on Amazon.

I hope this means they will finally release the rest of them even if they are MOD. Maybe they will also finish Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Happy Days this way as well.

Wow! Never thought this day would come. Pretty pricey at $35 a volume though. Hopefully that means they're uncut.

I wonder if these season 3 releases have the same music replacement issues that plagued the DVD's of seasons 1 and 2.

For $70, it'd better not.

For $70, it'd better not.

When the half season releases of seasons 1 and 2 first came out, the original retail price was about $40 each.

OK, maybe, but they're well under $10 per volume now. The original retail price almost never sticks unless it's MOD. For this, if it will drop, it will only be a few dollars. Hopefully it's unedited and remastered and not the masters they've provided to MeTV.

The episodes are probably complete but I imagine there are music replacements like those in the season 1 and 2 sets.

This is my holy grail show on DVD. It always has been. The music replacements bother me, however, I'm still willing to buy this even with the replacements. But I agree, at these prices, it really should be unedited, though that's not always how things work as we all know.

Anyways, thanks - thebigcookie - for letting me know about this release!

I ordered both and they have shipped already. I will post more info and some screen caps once I get them.

The season 3 episode to check will be Evening With A Star (3-36). This is the episode where Bill Frawley sings "Carolina In The Morning." It's always cut out on MeTV. With DVDs this expensive they should have bought the rights.

I agree with Svenfan: with DVDs this pricey, they better not have cut the music (but they probably did).

Music shouldn't be as much of an issue when/if they get into the color seasons. Eventually Frank DeVol did all the music for the show, and they didn't license music from the Capitol library. Where they might run into trouble is any music they play on their family jam sessions, Katie singing Downtown, etc.

Also for these prices, I agree they better remaster the films. They did for the first two seasons and they did a bang-up job.

I also wonder why this show in particular is issued in parts, like hour shows are. I can't think of any other sitcoms released that way.

I know. The show has 12 seasons and with them releasing them in half seasons, that'll be 24 DVD box sets on your shelf. I have the same complaint with Gunsmoke. I'll have an entire shelf dedicated to that show once I get every season, haha.

Just because a DVD set is pricey doesn't mean one should expect perfection, especially not from CBS who generally puts higher prices on their DVD's anyway and are notoriously known for music edits. I imagine season 3 of My Three Sons likely has some type of music edits/replacements, there's also a chance that everything was done right this time. Will have to read comments as reports come in. Regarding the higher price, all a person can do is wait for the price to come down or shop around to find the best deal.

Since this 3rd season is a MOD release, maybe they didn't go to the trouble this time to make the music edits/replacements. That's my thinking anyway. Will just have to see comments as reports come in.

I hear the music for Season 3 is intact. I just wonder how the PQ will be considering its MOD and not pressed DVDs. I've bought some from Amazon and the PQ hasn't been that great.

**THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON 3 AS I PURCHASED BOTH VOLUMES TOGETHER**

It’s been nearly a decade since CBS released the second season of MY THREE SONS on DVD and those earlier releases drew the wrath of fans, many of whom boycotted, because the background score had been updated/replaced with a modern synthesizer score.

Season 3 finally makes its way to us, but there are issues. First, this is a MOD release so the discs are not pressed. They are the purple DVD-Rs but the good thing is they have a nice logo on them and each disc lists the episodes [SEE PICS]. Someone else on another forum remarked that the cover art was rather low-resolution but I don’t notice a difference from the earlier seasons. The rear cover features the same pics on both volumes—a great cast portrait on the staircase [SEE PICS]. Unfortunately, there is no insert with original airdates, etc.

The really bad news is that between both volumes, there are 5 edited episodes. The rest all run around 25:40 give or take a few seconds but the following episodes are cut:

ROBBIE’S EMPLOYMENT SERVICE 22:27
DAUGHTER FOR A DAY 22:27
CHIP’S LAST FIGHT 22:27
THE BEAUTY CONTEST 22:43
WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE 22:32

Video quality has not been upgraded/remastered like it was on Seasons 1 and 2 so the show is going to look the same as when you saw it on TV Land about 20 years ago or currently on ME-TV. The closing logo (for those who will ask) is the modern CBS Television logo and the opening credits do not feature any original sponsor info, etc. They are the same chopped up ones that have been running for years. The good news is that the original background music DOES remain intact here.

This is a step up from a homemade set, yet at $70 for the season it’s pretty steep. Die-hard fans will want it, but casual fans can probably live without it.

Also, in case you didn't know episode 3-36 "Evening with a Star" is cut. Here they cut out the main point of the whole episode, Bub singing. Bub sings "Carolina In The Morning" at the dinner club or whatever it is when the kid, Stubby or Stinky, whatever the brat's name is, wins Bub as a star. ME TV & now the DVD release has cut out this song. I's regusted. But, I'll still buy it for all the great UNCUT and ORIGINAL background music which is here. I's excited if not some disappointed. This music rights greedy crap that goes on today really is ruining these classic shows. Movies don't have this problem with music writers great great grandkids now suing for their unearned hunk of the pie. Why classic TV, these shows should remain intact with the knowledge that all the writers and those involved in the show were paid in full at the time these shows were made. Next we'll see great great great grandkids of grips and set prop men suing for their share of what's not theirs.

I don't know that anyone's 100% sure on all the background music being original, but my thought tis this is a budget issue at inflated prices. I can't imagine they went through the technical magic (and expense) required to replace the transitional music. My guess is they threw caution to the wind on the rest of the music, other than "Carolina" and the other one that "CJ" found.

I’ll just stick with my set from “I offer” that I bought about 15 years ago. They’re all from television but many still run 25 minutes or so. $70 for one season is just ridiculous.

I just ordered the complete Mannix (8 seasons of a 1 hour show) for $60 and the complete Perry Mason (9 seasons of a 1 hour show) for $130 on Amazon with free shipping. Both are also from CBS Television.

If you compare with other media though, $70 is not all that outrageous -- many hardcover books, even all text (like fiction novels), now have an SRP of around $29.99. Newsstand prices for magazines are around $5.99. I think it's more a case of just finding outstanding buys on the complete Mannix and other series.

For the amount of entertainment and the work that goes into the product, $70 for this seems to be a better buy than a novel some hack typed on his PC and got a publisher to run and bind. I do have to agree though that half-hour sitcom seasons should not be split into 2 sets, and it is strange that only M3S is done that way and higher priced than all other half-hour shows.

I admit that I pretty much only purchase complete sets now and at a good price as I figure I’ve spent a good $3,000 on individual sets one at a time as they cane out in the past. Being retired now my income isn’t what it once was. I’m also shocked at the MSRP for new hard cover books. I usually wait about a year and buy them used on amazon.

A lot of times, Amazon sellers will list under "used," but in many cases the book has never been read -- publisher's overstock, etc.

I'm making an exception for M3S releases because it's among my highest priorities, but otherwise I'm doing as you and many others do -- holding off for bargains of varying degrees.

Patience oftentimes will really pay off, and sometimes pure luck is involved. I found a new, unopened Miami Vice Season 1 DVD at a Dollar Tree store. Just $1.07 after tax. They also had some ESPN "30 for 30" DVDs.

I heard this song by WF for the first time today. He did a great job with it. Even the kid, who had been endlessly whining up to the point of the song, liked it. Even calling Bub "sir" in the kitchen the next morning.

I also did some checking on the song K-K-K-Katy, which was sung by the Cub Scouts three times in Big Chief Bub (cut once and changed twice in the episode, on the DVD). I'd never heard of it; no wonder, it's a World War I song, written in 1917 and published in 1918. No way the songwriter would still be alive. So the copyright would only exist to make money for some publisher, and maybe heirs of the songwriter.

The copyright laws need to be changed, to allow fair use of these old songs.

I've been a Bing Crosby fan for a long time so I first heard Bing sing K-K-Katy many years ago on one of his radio shows (excellent programs, by the way). Bing mentions that his mother's name was Kate, hence his affinity for the song.

One interesting thing is that there's no reference as to why the boys are singing this song. The 25+ minute version on the DVD is still choppy and runs a little short, so they may have cut out a Bub comment. If it existed, the choppers at TV Land cut it out, too.

I guess we'll say it was a Bill O'Casey favorite from WW I.

In real life Bill Frawley & Bing were friends, Bill even came on Bing's radio show a couple times. I think the reason Bill likes this song is no more complicated than this is an Irish song and Bill's Irish, as was Bing. Whenever I've heard this song it's always in relation to St. Patty's day or Irish music. Bing sang a lot of Irish tunes including this song. Bill sang Barbershop music and in a Bing radio show Bing sings "I Had A Dream Dear" with the Gonzaga Univ. (where Bing attended) glee club and before he sings it he says, "I hope Bill Frawley will forgive me" for singing this Barbershop sing-along song.

Anyway, I'm glad you were able to finally see Bub singing the song he was famous for singing back in the teens, "Carolina In The Morning". Hearing this song was what made me seek out Bill Frawley's album, "Bill Frawley Sings The Old Ones" which I transferred since to my computer and songs from it will pop up when I play my music with "Random" on Media Player.

I kind of thought it was because "K-K-K-Katy" was a WWI marching song and Bub was leading his "troop" like they were little soldiers.

The very best rendition of this song is in one of my very favorite Ozzie and Harriet episodes. "The Runaways", sung by an adorable 2-year-old named Katie Sweet.

On the I-Offer set I have the episode “Evening with a Star” was taped from TVLand. I’d guess in the late 1990s. “Carolina in the Morning” is indeed sung by Bill on there. It runs 23:00 so it is edited but it’s nice to see this great classic song left intact at that time.
