...then who will host "Jeopardy"?

This is really depressing. :(

The survival rate is next to zero for stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

I'm praying he pulls through, unlikely as it is. Alex is a TV staple and I can't imagine Jeopardy without him. :(

I wonder how this will affect Jeopardy this season now that Alex Trebek is gonna recover from cancer? Will this mean that he'll retire from Jeopardy forever or will Jeopardy end for good? Because if Alex retires here are my choices for understudies or replacement hosts
1. Anderson Cooper
2. Jeff Probst
3. Montel Williams
4. Todd Newton
5. Maury Povich
6. Patrick Warbarton
7. Patrick Duffy
8. Patrick Stewart
But what I think will happen is that Jeopardy will have a fill in week much like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire does when Chris Harrison takes the day off and Jeopardy fans will have the chance to vote on a special app for their favorite host and the winner gets the job of the new host of Jeopardy. Pretty cool idea don't you think?

My pick for a replacement for Alex Trebek is Mo Rocca. He does frequent reports for CBS Sunday Morning and he also emceed the National Geographic Bee on PBS. He's witty and had great rapport with the talented young contestants that could translate into one of TV's longest running game shows.

If Alex has to leave Jeopardy, the best replacements for host would be Ken Jennings or Brad Rutter. I also would like to see a week long tournament with just them in an epic match. If a 3rd player is needed, Colby the other captain from the all-star game finals could join them.

Doctors say the odds of Alex Trebek beating his pancreatic cancer aren't in his favor. (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/03/06/alex-trebek-pancreatic-cancer-isnt-easy-fight-can-he-win/3086936002/)

Patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at stage 4 live an average of 12 to 15 months, said Dr. Timothy Donahue, professor of surgery, chief of surgical oncology and a pancreatic surgeon at UCLA. Donahue says, however, that the Jeopardy! host vowing to continue working will help him in his battle. "It's best for them to try and continue their normal lives as much as possible," he says. "It keeps their spirits up when combating this disease and trying to tolerate the treatment."

When I first heard that he had pancreatic cancer, I immediately wondered if Alex was a heavy drinker and smoker. Michael Landon (https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1991-04-16-1991106005-story.html) and Patrick Swayze were apparently huge smokers (https://people.com/archive/cover-story-goodbye-little-joe-vol-36-no-1/) and drinkers leading up to getting pancreatic cancer themselves.

It's impossible to think of Jeopardy! without Alex Trebek (https://www.theringer.com/tv/2019/3/7/18255058/alex-trebek-jeopardy-host-cancer-diagnosis)

The Jeopardy! host is a national treasure, Claire McNear says in reaction to his stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis. "For a generation of viewers," she says, "Trebek has been a constant of cable programming, a sometimes mustachioed, sometimes prickly, always steady presence, the keeper of a finite blue-purple world where the passage of time could be counted both in operatic ephemera and, maybe, the number of different living rooms where you found yourself watching over the years. It’s impersonal—a formulaic game played by strangers—and it’s also not: Come to enough family dinners, and soon enough you’ll be expected at them. Trebek has often insisted on being called the host of Jeopardy!, such that there would never be any confusion that he was the star: That, he says, is an honor that belongs to the contestants. Fair enough, perhaps, but he’s the one who became family."

ALSO:

Ken Jennings calls Trebek "the epitome of the old-school broadcaster to me, maybe he’s even the last man standing" (https://www.vulture.com/2019/03/ken-jennings-alex-trebek-jeopardy-all-star-games.html)
A 1984 article on the new Jeopardy! -- featuring criticism from original host Art Fleming -- called Trebek "a thoroughly unremarkable fellow" (https://twitter.com/joekovacjr/status/1103841016568836101)

Praying for Alex, but it's not going to turn out well I'm afraid. When Alex goes that's the day I stop watching Jeopardy. I really like Alex and Jeopardy just won't be any good without him. It's going to be a sad day when he retires or dies because this version of Jeopardy has been around most of my life. I was 15 years old when it premiered in 1984. If there's no Alex then there's no Jeopardy, that's just the way I feel about it.

In mourning Alex Trebek's cancer diagnosis, we're mourning the truth (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/03/08/were-not-just-mourning-alex-trebek-were-mourning-truth)

"When Trebek announced Wednesday that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which carries a particularly low survival rate, it felt like we were grieving the potential loss of more than an avuncular quiz-show host," says Drew Goins says of the Jeopardy! host. "The loss of Trebek means the loss of a zone where the truth is clear and uncontested. Since 1984, Trebek has dispensed truths at a dime a dozen. The show’s format, inverted from the standard trivia setup, puts all the answers right there on the board — 30 truths at a time for contestants to discover. All they have to supply is the question. That question must be precisely worded. In Trebek’s world, there is no room for the hedging, fudging and squidging of the truth that dominates everyone else's....These standards slide once we leave the Jeopardy! set, where canny manipulators get away with plenty worse than a misarticulated second syllable. The best a contestant can do with Trebek in the room, though, is hoodwink the host until a commercial break. On the rare instances that points are awarded improperly, the record is always promptly corrected and the scores adjusted before things can get too out of hand. Trebek embodies something increasingly rare: a universally accepted authority."

Ed. Alex Trebek, Ken Jennings, and Brad Rutter have one thing in common. They all have higher intelligence than the average American (which includes myself). A game show aspiring to a high level like Jeopardy (the opposite end of dumbed down bottom feeders such as Deal or no Deal or shock value Harvey Feud) needs smarts like this to host effectively. I think Alex himself would approve wholeheartedly of either Ken or Brad taking on the new era to succeed him whenever that would happen. They are possibly the two most iconic contestants from the show.

A higher intelligence level isn't needed to host Jeopardy! Alex only reads the answers, he doesn't write them. To appear on the show and go as far as Ken and Brad did does take a higher level.

So what? Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter have zero humility and I think they're extremely unlikable. You might feel differently if you were disrespected on Facebook by one of them like I was with the know-it-all Ken Jennings. I am not sure the two things are incompatible because Alex could recover in the long (or not all that long) term, but in the short term still need to take time off for his treatment and recovery. I can see Austin Rogers as the host of some show, but I'm not sure if he's right for Jeopardy. He might take attention away from the contestants. Although, I have always felt that Trebek himself was an interesting guy (i.e., the stories he tells about what he's done, where he's traveled, are interesting), sometimes more so than the contestants' stories.

Alex Trebek recalls being "on the floor writhing in pain" between Jeopardy! tapings due to his pancreatic cancer chemotherapy treatment (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/preview-jeopardy-host-alex-trebek-on-his-fight-against-pancreatic-cancer/)

"This got really bad," the Jeopardy! host tells Jane Pauley on the upcoming edition of CBS Sunday Morning, where he also reveals he's been wearing a hairpiece. "I was on the floor writhing in pain," he says. "It went from a 3 to an 11. And I just couldn't believe, I didn't know what was happening. And it happened three or four times a day while we were taping. So, that was a little rough on me." Trebek adds: "I taped the show and then I made it to the dressing room on one occasion, just barely, before I writhed in pain and cried in pain. And I had 15 minutes before the next show. So, I got myself together and spasms of that kind usually last about 10 to 15 minutes. So, all right, here we go again: 'Anybody got any pain pills?' And I don't like taking pain pills. But I got through it. And the producers were very kind. They said, 'Look, if you don't wanna do the show, we'll just cancel taping.' I said, 'No. We're here. We're doing the shows.'"

Alex Trebek Reports Good Response to Chemotherapy in Cancer Battle
by Greg Evans
May 29, 2019

Alex Trebek might be on a winning streak of his own: His stage 4 pancreatic cancer is responding well to chemotherapy, the longtime "Jeopardy!" host reports.

In a People magazine cover story, Trebek says his doctors report he’s in “near remission” of the cancer that typically has a 9 percent survival rate.

“It’s kind of mind-boggling,” Trebek, 78, tells People.

“The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory… some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.”

Trebek also said that he will go through several more rounds of chemo, with the goal of full remission. He says that he cried when he got the good news, but “they were tears of joy, not tears of depression.”

People also quotes Trebek about occasionally feeling weak, but how fan support provides relief. “I’ve got a couple million people out there who have expressed their good thoughts, their positive energy directed towards me and their prayers,” he says.

“I told the doctors, this has to be more than just the chemo, and they agreed it could very well be an important part of this.”

"Jeopardy!" Host Alex Trebek Undergoing Further Chemotherapy Treatments Amid Cancer Battle
by Rosy Cordero
September 17, 2019

"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek told "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that he will be undergoing another round of chemotherapy, admitting it may have been “overoptimistic” to think he had finished with the treatment so soon.

“I was doing so well. And my numbers went down to the equivalent of a normal human being who does not have pancreatic cancer,” he said on the ABC morning show.

“So we were all very optimistic. And they said, ‘Good, we’re gonna stop chemo, we’ll start you on immunotherapy. I lost about 12 pounds in a week. And my numbers went sky high, much higher than they were when I was first diagnosed. So, the doctors have decided that I have to undergo chemo again and that’s what I’m doing.”

Alex Trebek discusses the latest in his cancer battle

https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/30/entertainment/alex-trebek-cancer-battle-trnd/index.html

Alex Trebek is opening up about his pancreatic cancer battle.
Trebek has gone through chemotherapy and has to undergo it again, so he knows that he might not have a lot of time left to live, the "Jeopardy" host told ABC News.
But, he added, prayer and supporters have helped him feel a lot better since his diagnosis.
"I have learned something in the past year and it's this: We don't know when we're going to die," Trebek said. "Because of the cancer diagnosis, it's no longer an open-ended life, it's a closed-ended life because of the terrible survival rates of pancreatic cancer. Because of that, and something else that is operating here, people all over America and abroad have decided they want to let me know now, while I'm alive, about the impact that I've been having on their existence."

He added: "They have come out and they have told me, and my gosh, it makes me feel so good."
Although at one point Trebek was in "near remission," he told ABC News in October he'd have to undergo chemotherapy again, since the cancer had returned.
"We may try a new protocol, a different chemo or something in the trial stage that is not chemotherapy," he said, adding, "I don't mind experimenting. I've got nothing to lose, so let's go for it."
In March, he revealed in a YouTube video he had been suffering from stomach pains before being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which he vowed to fight.

He told his wife of 29 years, Jean Trebek, first, but not right away, because "it was not devastating news to me."
"Throughout my life, I've always wondered about how courageous a human being I was," Trebek said. "I just look at it as it's a part of life. Does that mean I'm courageous because I'm dealing with it? No. I could be scared to death and I'd still have to deal with it."

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2019-12-31/alex-trebek-jeopardy-talks-depression

Alex Trebek is getting candid about another side effect in his ongoing battle with cancer: depression.

The “Jeopardy!” host and his wife, Jean, sat down for an interview with “Good Morning America” host Michael Strahan that will air Thursday. Trebek opened up about his cancer diagnosis and how it has affected his mental health.

“My oncologist told me one of the symptoms, if you will, of pancreatic cancer is that you get these moments of depression, sadness,” Trebek, 79, said in a preview post released Monday.

The longtime quiz-show host first announced his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in a YouTube video in March, vowing to "beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”

He has since talked openly about his treatment journey and the trials and limitations of the illness, even expressing some regret over having gone public with his diagnosis.

Trebek knew something was wrong when his stomach pains grew severe, so he sought his doctor.

“I knew as soon as the doctor came back and mentioned the pancreas. I said, ‘Uh-oh, it’s going to be cancer,” Trebek said in the upcoming ABC interview.

Jean, his wife of 29 years, was the first to know about his cancer. She told ABC that it’s been hard to see her husband “in pain and I can’t help him.”

Trebek recognized how difficult his battle with cancer has been for his wife and family.

“It’s always tough for caretakers because she has to deal with her worrying about my well-being and also dealing with… I’m not always the most pleasant person to be around when I’m experiencing severe pain or depression,” Trebek said.

The “Jeopardy!” host acknowledged that he might not live much longer.

“I have learned something in the past year, and it’s this: We don’t know when we’re going to die,” he said. “Because of the cancer diagnosis, it’s no longer an open-ended life, it’s a closed-ended life because of the terrible... survival rates of pancreatic cancer.

“Because of that, and something else that is operating here, people all over America and abroad have decided they want to let me know now, while I’m alive, about the impact that I’ve been having on their existence,” he added.

ABC’s special “What Is Jeopardy? Alex Trebek and America’s Most Popular Quiz Show” will air Thursday at 5 p.m. Pacific.

Alex Trebek has rehearsed his final 'Jeopardy' show

Longtime "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek doesn't need more than half a minute to end his 35-year tenure on the TV series.

In an interview with ABC News, Trebek said he may not host the long-running game show for much longer. He didn't disclose when he'll stop appearing on the series, but he knows how he'll say goodbye to his loyal viewers.

"I've kind of, in my mind, rehearsed it already, and what I would do on that day is tell the director, 'Time the show down to leave me 30 seconds at the end. That's all I want,'" he said.

He went on: "Don't ask me who's going to replace me because I have no say whatsoever. But I'm sure that if you give them the same love and attention and respect that you have shown me ... then they will be a success and the show will continue being a success. And until we meet again, God bless you and goodbye."

Trebek, who's hosted "Jeopardy" since 1984, was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March. He's undergone several rounds of chemotherapy since then and promised fans he'd continue hosting the show "as long as [his] skills have not diminished."

But Trebek sees the silver lining of his diagnosis: The overwhelming support from contestants and fans.

"Because of the cancer diagnosis, it's no longer an open-ended life; it's a closed ended life because of the terrible survival rates of pancreatic cancer," he said in the same interview. "Because of that, and something else that is operating here, people all over America and abroad have decided they want to let me know now, while I'm alive, about the impact that I've been having on their existence."

Trebek: ‘Jeopardy’ Retirement Isn’t Imminent

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The brief farewell that Alex Trebek says will close his final “Jeopardy!” episode isn’t on the horizon.

“I don’t foresee that 30-second moment coming up in the near future,” Trebek said Wednesday, referring to his request for time to close out his decades-long run with the quiz show.

I am very sorry to see Alex Trebek going through something like pancreatic cancer, especially Stage 4. As somebody who has always admired him over the years, I've been hoping since the initial diagnosis that the cancer doesn't get severe enough for Alex to be forced to step down as host of Jeopardy! before his current contract expired. Personally I was hoping Alex would go to at least 2024.

Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune to begin taping without studio audiences over coronavirus concerns (https://www.tmz.com/2020/03/09/jeopardy-wheel-of-fortune-scrap-audience-coronavirus-spread-alex-trebek/)

Starting Tuesday, both game shows will tape without live audiences, according to TMZ. "Our sources say there are 3 primary concerns ... one of which is exclusive to Jeopardy," TMZ reports. "Alex Trebek, who is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer, has a compromised immune system from chemotherapy and other treatments. We're told execs felt it was too risky to expose him to large audiences. There are two other concerns ... most of the audience members for both Jeopardy and Wheel are older -- lots of folks in their 60s -- and they are the most vulnerable to contract the virus and not beat it. The third factor is that a number of people who attend tapings are from out of town and such travel is risky, given the spread of the virus." Jeopardy! and Wheel don't have a timeline on when they'll bring back their studio audiences.

How is Alex Trebek doing at the moment? Is his cancer officially gone now or is he now in remission? Because I haven't heard any news about Alex Trebek lately

Alex Trebek: If my current cancer treatment fails, I will stop treatment (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/17/books/alex-trebek-jeopardy-the-answer-is.html)

“Yesterday morning my wife came to me and said, ‘How are you feeling?’ And I said, ‘I feel like I want to die.’ It was that bad,” the Jeopardy! host, who turns 80 on Wednesday, tells The New York Times of his stage 4 pancreatic cancer while promoting his memoir The Answer Is… : Reflections on My Life, due out Tuesday. “There comes a time where you have to make a decision as to whether you want to continue with such a low quality of life, or whether you want to just ease yourself into the next level. It doesn’t bother me in the least.” Trebek, who worries that he's slurring his words and messing up clues, also said he'll stop hosting Jeopardy! if he can no longer do a competent job. “It’s a quality program, and I think I do a good job hosting it, and when I start slipping, I’ll stop hosting,” he said.
