View Full Version : Calling All Thompsons
Scrabjan1 01-29-2019, 09:55 PM So I’ve listed all references to “Thompson” did I miss any?
Mr. Thompson one of Beaver’s teachers as in Beaver’s Autobiography
Mrs. Thompson mentioned by Lumpy in Teacher’s Daughter. They took Lumpy from Mrs. Thompson and gave him to Mr. Foster.
In Junior Fire Chief Ward takes a call from an angry neighbor, Mr. Thompson.
Ward and June go see Miss Thompson’s new baby.
Eddie quits school and goes to work for Mr. Thompson at the garage.
In Un-togetherness I think Wally mentions his teacher Mr. Thompson.
In Wally’s Election Wally is on the phone to Walter and mentions a guy named Thompson.
In Beaver’s First Date Mrs. Thompson wants Wally to chaperone.
In Beaver and Kenneth Mrs. Thompson walks up to June at school and asks if her husband can play piano at a function.
In Beaver’s Ring the nurse is Miss Thompson mentioned by stevea
In Beaver’s Fear Wally mentions a guy named Arthur Thompson that could go but he carries a briefcase.
Ward and Fred discuss the Thompson Deal.
In Summer in Alaska Eddie tells Captain Drake his uncle, Richard Haskell knows Mr. Thompson who owns the fleet.
In The Clubhouse Beaver talks about a neighbor, Mr. Thompson, who lives in a big house.
In Beaver’s Newspaper an ad in the paper talks about boys throwing dirt in Linda Thompson and Shelley Thompson’s hair.
In Lumpy Rutherford he tells Wally and Beaver to go by Thompson’s house he wouldn’t let them pass.
In Beaver Gets ‘spelled Beaver says Larry Mondello pushed me and I spilled Mr. Thompson’s cocoa.
In Kite Day Beaver asks June about rain dances. He asks June if Mrs. Thompson at dancing school can do a rain dance.
In Goodbye Beaver Ward and June are discussing houses and realtors and Ward mentions Thompson-Baker.
stevea 01-29-2019, 10:05 PM Besides coach Grover there was a coach named Thompson early on, I think.
Also early on I think June mentioned some Thompsons that lived near "the park" (later, it would probably have been Metzger's Field).
Scrabjan1 01-29-2019, 10:27 PM Coach Grover, Henderson, Driscoll, Doyle and Ingersol. Maybe Wally mentions a Coach Thompson.
stevea 01-29-2019, 11:11 PM In Beaver and Kenneth Mrs. Thompson walks up to June at school and asks if her husband can play piano at a function.
Mrs. Thompson: Oh, that's right, you have the husband who doesn't DO anything.
And there's a mention of the "Thompson deal," one of Ward's work assignments.
Scrabjan1 01-31-2019, 10:54 AM And there's a mention of the "Thompson deal," one of Ward's work assignments.
Wow these Thompson names are adding up. I think it’s used more than any other name. Lately I’ve heard Mr. Grant, Mr. Farnsworth, Mr. Bromley, Mr. Newton, Mrs. Bruce, Mr. Peabody, Mr. Proudy so why use Thompson all the time.
stevea 01-31-2019, 01:39 PM Lately I’ve heard...Mr. Peabody...
Hmm...Mr. Peabody. Was he a dog with glasses? No Sherman? No Wayback machine? (References to Rocky and Bullwinkle, for those who don't know.)
stevea 01-31-2019, 01:40 PM Thompson and Henderson seem to be the winners.
Scrabjan1 01-31-2019, 11:02 PM Mr. Peabody and Sherman was a great cartoon from Rocky and Bullwinkle. Way ahead of its time. Loved Boris and Natasha.
Larry mentions Mr. Peabody in Beaver Makes a Loan when Beaver is going to punch him out.
stevea 01-31-2019, 11:11 PM I liked Dudley Do-Right, with Snidely Whiplash and Nell (tied to a railroad track, of course.)
Bullwinkle: Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat. (Out comes some other ferocious animal). Ooh. Don't know my own strength.
Scrabjan1 02-01-2019, 09:32 PM Bullwinkle Moose was classic. (Moose and Squirrel) That was William Conrad as narrator. They can never duplicate those early animators who gave us Tom Terrific, Felix, Pixie and Dixie, Snagglepuss, Yogi, Huckleberry Hound etc.
stevea 02-01-2019, 11:14 PM I knew June Foray voiced Rocky (and tons of other animated characters) but I never knew Conrad was the narrator.
The H-B, Jay Ward, and Warners cartoons were classic. The Ward animation was a little subpar, but the writing more than made up for it.
stevea 02-25-2019, 09:46 PM In Beaver's Ring, I just now noticed the school nurse is Miss Thompson.
Scrabjan1 09-04-2019, 10:45 AM Just heard another Thompson so had to update the list.
stevea 09-04-2019, 10:22 PM How could I have missed the fleet owner? I guess I was too engrossed by Captain Drake. (he cracked me up--Great casting!)
Scrabjan1 09-17-2019, 08:53 AM Just heard another Thompson in The Clubhouse. Beaver asked his mother if Mr. Thompson was rich who lives in the big house. June said he inherited the money.
stevea 09-17-2019, 08:54 AM I think these are the Thompsons who live over by the park, IIRC.
Scrabjan1 09-25-2019, 06:13 PM And in Lumpy Rutherford he tells Wally and Beaver to go by Thompson’s house he wouldn’t let them pass. Lumpy was a creep and a meathead.
Scrabjan1 10-25-2019, 10:37 AM I heard another Thompson in Beaver’s Newspaper. The ad said that someone is throwing dirt in Linda Thompson and Shelley Thompson‘s hair. Mrs. Thompson would like if the boys threw dirt in someone else’s hair. Not verbatim
stevea 10-25-2019, 02:01 PM That stilted language cracks me up. Maybe these Thompsons live at "8509 Grant Ave."
"Do not talk to the operator because she is a recording."
stevea 06-05-2020, 08:59 AM Well I thought we'd missed the one in Junior Fire Chief, who had moved into the old Baker house down the street. But, no, he's included.
Scrabjan1 06-05-2020, 10:12 AM I’m glad you brought back the Thompson thread (post) as I found one from way back. I was looking at FB where they said Larry was called Frankie and found in Beaver Get’s ‘Spelled he mentions spilling Mr. Thompson’s cocoa.
stevea 06-05-2020, 10:15 AM I wish I could find the really early one where June mentions the Thompsons who live "over by the park."
Scrabjan1 06-05-2020, 10:44 AM Isn’t that The Clubhouse? Doesn’t June say they live over by the park.
stevea 06-05-2020, 12:22 PM OK, yes, I missed that on the list. Yes, June does say that. Without that reference, I didn't catch it.
GentlemanJim 06-05-2020, 01:03 PM I knew June Foray voiced Rocky (and tons of other animated characters) but I never knew Conrad was the narrator.
The H-B, Jay Ward, and Warners cartoons were classic. The Ward animation was a little subpar, but the writing more than made up for it.
I always thought the "Pottsylvania Creeper" storyline was a satire on humankind's interactions with an illegal weed.
I had a large, profusely illustrated coffee table book on the Jay Ward operations, they were among the first of the cartoon studios to contract their art production out to a foreign country source. Mexico in this case.
I recall my father remarking at the time about how these cartoons contained a "story within the story", one for the adults underneath the more topical children's cartoon.
And only years later did I come to understand what he was talking about.
stevea 06-05-2020, 06:01 PM I didn't look thru the thread again but other than the quoted item, but I totally agree on Jay Ward, and particularly all the iterations of Rocky and Bullwinkle. The writing was fantastic--and as you say it really made up for the subpar animation.
I actually enjoyed all the other toons within the show, Dudley/Snidely, Mr. Peabody, etc.
I even liked Ward's later show, George of the Jungle. Total comedy, better animation. Only a few episodes produced.
Unrelated to this, a show I'd like to see on DVD is the Beatles animated series that was on the ABC Satuday morning, in the late 60s. It was a fun show, had the real-deal music, even sing-alongs. There shouldn't be too many hurdles since Apple itself owns the rights. However, negotiating royalty rights could be an issue.
GentlemanJim 06-05-2020, 10:34 PM .
I actually enjoyed all the other toons within the show, Dudley/Snidely, Mr. Peabody, etc.
.
There were two episodes of "I love Lucy", one had a bit from Edward Everett Horton, and another with Hans Conried ......where I was like "OMG, what is it with that voice?"
And I think I finally put 2 and 2 together on Horton., on my own...but it wasn't until years later that I was able to use the internet to figure out why Hans Conried sounded so familiar. And finding out he was also Uncle Tonoose was just a bonus.
Scrabjan1 06-06-2020, 08:02 AM Hans Conreid was the best as Mr. Livermore and the used furniture salesman in Lucy.
stevea 06-06-2020, 10:39 AM He donned a costume and played cranky Uncle Tonoose on Danny Thomas Show for many years.
GentlemanJim 06-06-2020, 01:56 PM He donned a costume and played cranky Uncle Tonoose on Danny Thomas Show for many years.
I think that I definitely would have watched an "Uncle Tonoose" spin-off. Sort of a precursor for the soup naz1
stevea 06-07-2020, 10:25 AM "The Uncle Tonoose Show" - S1Ep1- "Tonoose Takes Wife"
GentlemanJim 06-07-2020, 10:35 AM "The Uncle Tonoose Show" - S1Ep1- "Tonoose Takes Wife"
OMG! Who would be best suited for that role?
stevea 06-07-2020, 12:04 PM Well, since this probably would be later 60s, how about Joanne Worley or Ruth Buzzi? Possibly Nancy Walker, too.
GentlemanJim 06-07-2020, 12:10 PM Possibly...might work.
I was thinking more along the lines of a very squealy Sally Struthers, or perhaps Bea Arthur?
stevea 06-07-2020, 01:27 PM Yep, Bea Arthur would be perfect. Struthers would have been too young. Of course he could have impressed her by using that "strong like bull" line.
Scrabjan1 06-08-2020, 09:03 AM I saw Joanne Worley on the street being escorted by two men. She had just come out of a movie theater.
Who is Uncle Tonoose?
GentlemanJim 06-08-2020, 09:07 AM Who is Uncle Tonoose?
The headstrong older ethnic guy on "Make Room For Daddy"
stevea 06-08-2020, 10:30 AM Yeah, it's Hans Conreid with a mustsche, probably a toupee, and a Lebanese accent.
Scrabjan1 09-18-2020, 09:07 AM Another Thompson in Goodbye Beaver. In the beginning Ward and June are talking about houses and realtors and Ward mentions Thompson-Baker.
