But which recurring adult did you most enjoy when they appeared? Bonniegirl 11-01-2018, 12:02 AM I voted Fred, but Gus and Miss Landers were also contenders in my voting ;) PhoenixAcres 11-01-2018, 12:37 AM Fred is hilarious. MMR 11-01-2018, 09:51 AM Fred; although all the others played a big part in Beaver's environment. Torgo 11-01-2018, 12:54 PM I voted Fred, some hilarious scenes with him, not just with the Cleavers, but with his own family. Mrs Mondello, and Aunt Martha should be on the list. Oh God, YES !!!! :eek:Mrs. Mondello!!!;) I knew there was someone I really liked missing from that list! I couldn't put my finger on who though? :confused:But yes, Mrs. Mondello, that is who I was thinking of!! My vote definitely goes to her , would have went to her had she been in the poll!! I love Mrs.Mondello!! :) icecream 11-01-2018, 05:19 PM Miss Landers MA 11-01-2018, 05:42 PM Miss Landers getsmartbeaver 11-01-2018, 09:03 PM Fred. Even though he was the "mean" one, he usually made me laugh. stevea 11-02-2018, 10:56 AM I agree, Mrs. Mondello and Aunt Martha should be on the list. If it wasn't limited to adults, Eddie would win, IMO. I do like what Fred adds, but to be contrarian I'll vote for Mr. Gus. 70s show watcher 11-02-2018, 06:22 PM fred was funny but i vvoted for mrs. rayburn i loved her deadpan reactions to events that were going on around her esp in the book report ep Scrabjan1 11-06-2018, 08:44 AM I vote for Gus because his vast knowledge of all things helped Beaver throughout his young life. I have to vote for Mrs. Mondello secondly if she was on list. MichaelMartinD 11-12-2018, 10:43 AM Uncle Billy! MichaelMartinD 11-15-2018, 10:42 AM I should specify that I preferred Uncle Billy in his second episode ("Uncle Billy's Visit") where he was more the kindly but responsible adult rather than the ne'er do well of the first episode ("Uncle Billy"). Another of my favorite adults was Beaver's teacher Mr. Blair, played by the wonderful Wendell Holmes. Holmes also played Andy Hadlock, the handyman in "Beaver and Andy." stevea 11-15-2018, 01:11 PM Also Mr. Willet, the music teacher in season 1 ("Music Lesson"). Quite a versatile actor. Scrabjan1 11-16-2018, 10:36 AM Yes Wendell Holmes was excellent as Andy Hadlock. That great scene when he shows up at the door asking Beaver for something to help him out. Beaver not understanding he doesn’t want Honolulu punch but something different. Love his face when he gives him water and later when he says he has brandy. You could really feel Andy’s situation about needing a drink. That episode really stood out. Bonniegirl 11-16-2018, 02:52 PM Yes Wendell Holmes was excellent as Andy Hadlock. Love his face when he gives him water and later when he says he has brandy. You could really feel Andy’s situation about needing a drink. That episode really stood out. Oh yes, poor Andy. That was a really good ep. That actor sure did a good job playing him!! ;) MichaelMartinD 11-16-2018, 03:20 PM To me there was an undercurrent of danger in that scene. Beaver is alone in the house, and here is this alcoholic guy walking in and asking him for a drink. You feel almost as if Andy might become violent if he doesn't get what he wants. stevea 11-16-2018, 06:50 PM If Andy was around, W&J should probably have not left Beaver alone, knowing Andy's history. At the least they could have made sure Wally was around, but they kept him in the dark, too. Scrabjan1 11-17-2018, 11:20 AM Ward and June handled the Andy Trouble very poorly. If they had told Beaver all about his drinking problem there would have been no plot. How was Beaver to know that Andy had an addiction to alcohol as no one in the Cleaver house ever talked about or touched the stuff. Even when Ward and June came home from a late party they were as sober as a judge. Even the Clarkson wedding served straight punch. I remember seeing that Andy episode and thinking how naive Beaver was about Andy but Ward and June acted like Andy was a leper. Andy did lie to Ward when he wanted to do the house trim and told him he hadn’t had a drink in 6 months. He had a bottle in his pocket. Still it was a wonderful and unusual episode. I wish we saw Andy fall off ladder. Only kidding! stevea 11-17-2018, 11:43 AM Really young kids need to be shielded. But Beaver is around 10 and Wally 14 or 15. They were both old enough to be told what his problem was. But as you say, there would go all the subsequent plot. One good thing is that it did point out that W&J did make bad decisions sometimes. You're right, it really was a great episode, along with many others in the first half of the series. Scrabjan1 11-17-2018, 12:22 PM I wish my mother could have shielded me from people with drinking trouble but quite impossible when he lived in the house. That’s why I thought June was a elitist and smug not Ward so much. Not telling Beaver about such things wasn’t smart. Like in today’s world not telling your children about pedophiles and sexual deviants. I told my two kids anything they wanted to know about. Of course Beaverland was a different time. In the Chopper episode if June could have done it she would have called Uncle Dave back to get this kid out of her house whose father was married too many times and whose mother was a basket case. June wanted to exist in her own perfect world with her perfect husband and boys. She also judged the trashman’s boys. Wonder if Andy returned the next day to finish the job. stevea 11-17-2018, 12:48 PM June had a prep school background and Ward was raised on a farm. Meet Aunt Martha if there was any doubt June was an elitist. Ward should have expressed more doubt about Beaver going to Fallbrook. But he did express doubts about some of her schemes. He openly doubted she should try to make the boys get along in Brotherly Love. Also when she took it upon herself to invite Ginny Townsend on a picnic. And when she committed Wally to go to a dance with Eddie's girl (Dow's acting was really good when he threw a fit about that one). Re Andy, I wonder how he found their new house, when he first came around, when he was always going around with a snootful. |
