View Full Version : Ricky Nelson
Tankeryanker 10-19-2018, 10:19 PM Same time as LITB. I wonder why they did not mention many popular people on the show
Wally looks like him at times.

stevea 10-19-2018, 11:31 PM I wish they had played more "real" music like this on LITB, rather than all those canned, generic songs that Wally (and sometimes Beaver) danced to.
Scrabjan1 10-21-2018, 08:45 AM Yeah why not mention Ricky and Ozzie and Harriet. Maybe they were on a different network. Why constantly mention Sal Mineo, Tony Curtis and Tuesday Weld and not James Dean or Marilyn Monroe. I think they mention Bobby Darrin too.
Wouldn’t it have been funnier if The Barons all looked like Marilyn Manson??
stevea 10-21-2018, 12:31 PM O&H and LITB were both on ABC.
I remember Wally mentioned Bennett Cerf, who was on the CBS panel show What's My Line?, and Jack Paar, who was the Tonight Show host on NBC. He also mentioned McHale's Navy (another Revue show, and on ABC), and I think Beaver mentioned Men Of Annapolis, which was a syndicated show, and Ben Casey, which was on ABC. So I guess it didn't matter what network shows were on--LITB writers were equal-opportunity mentioners.

I must have missed that or was not as familiar with the names mentioned. I know on the BBunch that if someone was famous, they were brought on to the show. Don Drysdale and Davy Jones are two that come to mind.

Don Drysdale in fact was on a bunch of sitcoms, including LITB and The Beverly Hillbillies.
Tankeryanker 10-22-2018, 04:21 PM What episode did Don appear on? I must have missed the connection. Silly girl I am

"Long Distance Call."
Beaver and two of his friends were at Beaver's house, started making silly prank phone calls, and then decided to call Don Drysdale long distance.
Tankeryanker 10-22-2018, 05:47 PM I have seen that one plus I said to myself that he looked so much younger on LITB than he did on the B Bunch. I guess it slipped my mind.
Scrabjan1 10-23-2018, 01:05 PM Don Drysdale was also in an episode of The Rifleman. Hey wasn’t Joe Namath on an episode of BBunch? He was very popular around that time. How about Desi Arnez, Jr. who looks just like his old man.
stevea 10-23-2018, 02:07 PM Drysdale really made the sitcom rounds. Yes, Namath was on BB, as were Arnaz and Davy Jones (who sang an absolutely horrible song.) Other notables were Vincent Price, Don Ho (cameo), E. G. Marshall and Imogene Coca.

You don't consider this a toe-tapping little diddy?

And, I take back what I said about him being on The Beverly Hillbillies.
I based that on the Wikipedia entry without checking it out for myself.
There was a baseball-themed episode, but Drysdale was not in it.

It doesn't start out too bad, but it turns pretty nauseating, IMO.
stevea 10-23-2018, 10:58 PM I'd rather listen to the Brady kids. Or Johnny Bravo.

Wasn't Leo Durocher on the baseball episode? (And what? Wikipedia was wrong?)

Yes.
Jed and Jethro were invited to play golf with Durocher (playing himself) and a generic baseball player Durocher was trying to sign.
biffbronson 10-24-2018, 08:02 PM A couple more TV series mentioned on LITB: Captain Kangaroo and The Twilight Zone, both of which were CBS shows.
stevea 10-24-2018, 10:35 PM Oh yeah, Capt. Kangaroo, Lumpy's favorite show, by how often he mentioned it.
I think somebody mentioned Huntley and Brinkley once--they were on NBC.
Scrabjan1 10-25-2018, 08:40 AM Also didn’t Larry mention Kookie don’t know if he mentioned the show but I think Lumpy mentions 77 Sunset Strip. I believe Thurston Howell was also on Brady Bunch. I think I remember that horrible song Davy Jones sang. Anything Davy sang was okay to his fans. I’d take Davy over David Cassidy any day. Just clicked on Davy and that was nauseating.

And another CBS show, Route 66.
When Eddie was going to go on a fishing boat to Alaska, one of the others (I think Lumpy) said that even the guys on Route 66 had never been there.

"Girl" is tolerable at the start, but just gets worse and worse and worse...
Jim Backus (Mr. Howell) had 2 roles, far apart, on the Bradys.
He was in the three-part third season opener, a trip to the Grand Canyon. He played the single resident of a ghost town, who thought the Bradys were after his gold claim. So he locked them up in the old jail. In an episode close to the end of the series he played Mike's boss, who thought he was great at pool, until he encountered Bobby.
stevea 10-25-2018, 01:06 PM Also, re the Kookie comment by Larry--I think he mentioned "Kookie from the TV show", and didn't actually mention the show. That was in the episode where Mrs. Mondello caught Larry (and Beaver) snooping in his sister's diary. Due to being scolded in front of Beaver, Larry then runs away and hides out at the Cleaver house, in the boys' bathroom.
Scrabjan1 10-25-2018, 04:11 PM Wow stevea are you a Brady Bunch fan? Not I!! I watched it I have to admit (as well as Partridge Family) but never really liked BB and thought it was not a believable show especially since we found out Florence and Robert weren’t compatible. Reed had to be a good actor to show he was hetero! Marcia Marcia Marcia.
stevea 10-25-2018, 05:28 PM To me BB is a background show. Other stuff going on, Sunday paper, crosswords, etc. Nothing else on at that time.
It improved as it went along. The first season is insufferable (I won't bore you as to why since this is the LITB forum).
I always thought it was strange Robert Reed wasn't in the final episode (out of town when his son graduates?) Then I recently read somewhere that he had objections to the script. Sherwood Schwartz was going to fire him for the 6th season (heaven knows how they'd handle that), then it was cancelled.
