There have been a few references/ideas sprinkled around this board of The Facts of Life meets Sesame Street, and I wanted to dedicate a thread to that. What it would be like if the girls were on their way back from a trip in New York City, and the bus broke down on Sesame Street? What if they had to spend the day hanging around this beloved, revered street inhabited by so many quirky (lovable) characters? What kind of Eastland/Sesame interactions could there be?

What kind of interactions/pairings/moments do you think would be fun to see? Here are some from me:

Mrs. Garrett and Mr. Hooper and Cookie Monster

Mrs. Garrett could help out Mr. Hooper in his store, and talk with him about their younger years. She could bake some treats to serve at the counter, while being frustrated and losing her patience in trying to keep Cookie Monster tame and away from them, lol.

Jo and Bert 'n Ernie

I can already see Jo kicked back in the lounge at Eastland in her footie pajamas, holding a pillow clutched to her while laughing at Bert 'n Ernie when she watches SS: "Heh, man, those two guys crack me up! lol!", so if she were on Sesame Street I could see her visiting B&E at 123 Sesame Street in their downstairs apartment, and helping them through some sort of trial or tribulation such as having to share, or splitting up responsibilities, something like that.

Blair and Oscar

We already know Blair likes the finer things in life, and is easily groused by anything "low class"; just recall her reaction to the menu in that little diner in NYC: "See? Here's a picture of a hamburger; and it's green." lol...so it could be quite comedic to pair her up with Oscar.

Something that came to my mind is, Blair could be chatting with Oscar at his trash can, when he brings out a lovely little perfume bottle:

Blair: "Oo, now that actually looks lovely, Oscar."

Oscar: "Yeah, it's some perfume a relative of mine sent me from France. Some city called 'Paris'."

Blair: "You mean this is a bottle of authentic French perfume?"

Oscar: "Yeah, but you wouldn't believe this junk---I've never smelled anything like it!"

Blair: "Well if you don't like it, it must be good. Let me smell it!"

Oscar: "Okay, you asked for it, Blondie..."

[OSCAR squirts BLAIR with perfume from perfume bottle]

Blair: [coughs, waves arms in front of scrunched up face] "Oohhh, yuck!! Oscar, I thought you said you never smelled anything like this before!"

Oscar: "I haven't!"

Blair: "But it's disgusting! It smells...ugh, rotten!"

Oscar: "I know, it's French stinkweed---isn't it beautiful?? I've only gotten to hear about this beauty in stories! I told you I've never smelled anything like it before! Until now, heh, heh, heh..."

[OSCAR sprays more French stinkweed perfume on BLAIR as she runs away covering her sensitive little nose]

[B]Nancy and Big Bird and Snuffy

Big Bird could decide he wants to reorganize his nest area, but he and Snuffy can't come up with any ideas that work. Then Nancy could come along and help them out by offering ideas on reorganizing Big Bird's nest, and helping them pitch in.

Cindy and Herry Monster

Cindy could come across Herry, who's sad he has such a hard time playing sports with others because of his immense Bam Bam-like strength. Poor guy, he's like a bull in a china shop. Cindy could boost his confidence by showing him athletic things he can do on his own where he's safe from accidentally hurting others in a team sport. That way he can still play with his friends, but when he needs some alone time to really exert his strength, he can do that on his own. Cindy could teach him how to jump rope, different techniques with his weight-lifting, and offer to teach him how to run long distance ("My best friend taught me how to run, Herry. You'll see, it's a cinch!")

Sue Ann and Grover

Sue Ann could teach Grover how to run long distance, and about different types of races, and hurdles (of course, Grover would be disastrous on the hurdles, at least at first, lol). He could even wear sneakers and a little headband on his "cute, furry little monster head" as he would say, lol.

Molly and Sherlock Hemlock

Molly could run into a clue-seeking Sherlock Hemlock staring at the ground through his magnifying glass as he's walking along. He's befuddled by some mystery, and Molly can help him with his clues; perhaps she may even take out her flash film camera and take photographs at possible clue scenes!

Nice job with Molly's hat!

Maybe Charlotte could have reprized her role as Molly the Mail Lady. Or maybe even a dual role as Molly/Edna!

haha, thanks, it's all free-hand! lol

Maybe Charlotte could have reprized her role as Molly the Mail Lady. Or maybe even a dual role as Molly/Edna!

Ooo, a Molly/Edna split-screen scene would be fantastic!

By the way, in case anyone wonders, "Herry" actually is spelled correctly. Rather than "Harry", they named him "Herry" with an "e" in honor of his performer, Jerry Nelson. (get it? "Jerry/Herry"?)

Retro, you had a good pairing idea that I didn't mention because I was gonna let you share, lol.

And now, Retro, an assignment for you! :typing:

Here is a screenshot below that I think would make a great visual for the Nancy/Bird/Snuffy story (except that it's not from the '70s or '80s set of Big Bird's nest, but I digress) --- because you are so talented at mocking up photos that look so real, I thought I would provide a screenshot and see if you would like to insert Nancy into the scene. :)

(okay, so, well, it's more of an "optional" assignment I guess, lol)

Mrs. Garrett would teach a lesson to Oscar The Grouch about how to be a proper Grouch and have a normal life instead of having to deal with all of his rotten ways. His trash collection would be gone, and his place would be more proper.

Mrs. Garrett sure would have her work cut out for her! Even pulling out the full-length mirror for some serious reflection during the heart-to-heart might not work on Oscar!

That would be good too. I just wonder how long Oscar could stand it before going back to his ol' "rotten" Oscar ways, lol.

A couple of other thoughts:

Natalie and Telly and Miles

Natalie could be playing with toddler Miles (the adopted son of Susan and Gordon) on the steps of 123 Sesame Street, and Telly could come over and hear Natalie mention that Miles was adopted. Telly could ask her what that word means, and she would explain to him what adoption is, and how she is adopted too, and lots of other kids are, and what that's like, and how adopted families can have just as much love as anyone.

Sue Ann and Cindy and the Two-Headed Monster

The Two-Head Monster could be arguing with himself (lol) over something, and Sue Ann and Cindy could come over and stop their fighting (what a change from "Running!"), and calm them down and work with them on cooperating and working together. They could explain go the monster that they spend a lot of time together as well, being best friends, and even best friends argue, and that you'll argue with someone sometimes if you spend a lot of time together. The girls could reassure them that's just normal, but, it's important to work it out, and keep your friendship. :)

Things I'd love to see in a crossover with Sesame Street

Kelly getting lectured by Big Bird about stealing
Count von Count being Blair's accountant, counting all the money she spends or clothing she buys at Bloomingdales
Kermit and Elmo getting all overly excited with Tootie when they meet Jermaine Jackson
Ernie keeping all the girls up during the Take My Finals episode and squeaking his rubber ducky at the girls in The Four Musketeers episodes
Cookie Monster outselling Edna's Edibles in cookies
Oscar the Grouch and Jo arguing with each other

Ahhhh, hahahaha! That could be sooooo funny! Blair getting more and more elated at all her purchases that she piles up in The Count's castle to wait for her daddy to send a separate car to cart them all back to Eastland, and The Count getting more and more elated at all the receipts she showers on him and he gets to count all the figures!

Cookie Monster outselling Edna's Edibles in cookies

I dunno, I think Cookie Monster would end up eating all of his cookies to sell, making zero profit! :eat:

Oscar the Grouch and Jo arguing with each other

Ooo, that's a good one too! Especially if it were Eastland Jo! (before she softened as much as she did in the later seasons)

Well in the Bert & Ernie picture I was going for "realism" on the show, looking at it as if the characters watch FOL on their own time when the cameras aren't filming them, lol. Whaddya think, Retro? Would you like to take the challenging assignment of inserting Sue Ann and Cindy into this photo of the Two-Headed Monster, whereby we can pretend our girls are teaching him/them (lol) about cooperation and friendship? :)

(special request: if you do, could you please put Cindy on the right side? The right head of the monster [from our view] is my favored of the two, so I would love my favorite Lost Girl to be by my favorite head  )

And actually, I agree with Oscar (and Big Bird's) puppeteer Caroll Spinney: sure, Oscar is a grouch, but he is not rotten to the core. Underneath all that grouchy green fur, way down, he has a heart of gold buried under there. So I don't really think he would take sadistic pleasure in seeing Mr. Gideon lose his job, but I just couldn't resist this darkly humorous joke, lol.

And I like how they're teaching them to share evenly using pigs and roosters

(and this is fitting in a way, with Cindy near the pigs, as Sue Ann once referred to her by the moniker "Pigtails With a Face to Match" [despite them being braids, but I digress], and Sue Ann is near the roosters, and she ate like a bird in "Dieting", lol)

Here are the lyrics to "I Love Roger":

Oh, I love Roger!
He's just so see-through, or glass-like, transparent,

We go on dates, but he's invisible there

Beginning in 1989, the show did a handful of slightly spooky segments of a mystery installment called Mysterious Theater starring Sherlock Hemlock and his dog Watson, hosted by "Vincent Twice, Vincent Twice" (lol), parodying Vincent Price's stint hosting Masterpiece Theatre on PBS:

Glad to see fans of "MMT"!

(a bit of "behind-the-scenes" trivia: that image of Molly's head in the "Mystery Meat Theater" title card comes from "Flash Flood", and it's the beginning of her aghast reaction when Mrs. Garrett warns Cindy she could have been "electrocuted!"---so I was glad to know of such a fitting countenance for the "Mystery Meat Theater" title card to go grab, lol)

I always remember Mystery, and that crazy Edward Gorey animated theme song haunted my dreams as a kid.

OMG, I loved that animated musical intro SO ridiculously. I would tune in to PBS at 10:00 on Saturday nights JUST to watch Edward Gorey's animated "Mystery!" title, and then I would watch something else or get ready for bed. I just loved Mr. Gorey's intro to the show so much, and the music, and I had to see it---though, being a little boy, I had no idea who Edward Gorey was back then. All I knew was I LOVED that animated intro, with its slightly lighthearted spooky/odd musical theme, and it made me feel titillated every time I got to see it.

And now another spin on "Mysterious Theater"...

So I see! I'm surprised at how many folks were "traumatized" by the opening titles as kids! I mean, sure, some things scared me unreasonably, but these titles were so much fun! :D

Also, how wonderfully funny and fitting that SS's "Mysterious Theater" title card was a direct reflection of the real "Mystery" title card! I had no idea! I remember the Diana Rigg intro more (I suppose since I saw it more often, as I was entering adolescence). But that's awesome that SS used the same title card from the Vincent intro, albeit altered just a tad.

Watching the Vincent intro, I'm falling in love with these all over again (I hadn't watched them on YT in quite a while), and I am most struck by the dead man's feet sinking into the lake---yikes! (but what delightfully creepy fun!)

Yeah, the dead man's feet sinking in is visually startling. The thing I most remember, however, is the piteous sound of the woman up on the wall, howling. In some versions, she isn't even that high up. I wanted her to grow a spine and hop down already. Or at least say, "Hey, police! I'm up here!"

But then that would have changed the intro a bit...

Yeah, the dead man's feet sinking in is visually startling.

Yes, what I find the darkest in that particular intro. My next pick would probably be the dead man in the library. However, he is stationary (common among dead people  ), whereas the corpse in the lake is animated as sinking down---and something about him being fully dressed is creepy, as well; the fact that he was (allegedly) killed while going on his merry way or attending the party or whatever---and also, there is the bubbling, gurgling sound of his body sinking into the lake.

Some of the producers thought it was such "fun" to play that game with us kids, but what they didn't realize is that it tortured us! (Where were these fellow tormented kids when SS was conducting its ongoing research?? They should have realized this a decade prior!)

Yes, that aspect of the show frustrated me to no end, so thank goodness Snuffy was revealed as real while I was still a child!

And yeah, probably not great to have a shaggy furry monster around cookie dough, lol.

Ya know, when I started this thread, I thought we might share some ideas on a page or two of what kind of "cross-overs" we could see by bringing Eastland to Sesame Street. I had no idea it would turn out to be over 10 pages and over 160 posts (!) of ideas and so many mock-up "photo stills". That tickles me, because the concept of this thread is very important to me. When I was a child I spent my summer days at my grandparents' house (while my parents were at work), and I spent many an hour plopped down right in front of their big ol' "dinosaur console" TV, and two of my favorite shows I watched daily were Sesame Street and The Facts of Life (I also grew up watching DS, I assume airing right before FOL, and while I have the Mrs. Garrett seasons of that show, it just hasn't stuck with me on such a level as "Facts"). I have vivid, beloved memories of watching both of these shows at my grandparents, savoring these shows, so seeing them come together in a lovely "marriage" as this thread is very special to me. :)

And Guy Smiley has always been Jim's most fascinating puppeteering performance for me. Jim was so gentle, so low-key, so quiet, so soft-spoken, so unassuming, and then he puts on that puppet and he is this WILD RAUCOUS LOUD OUTRAGEOUS EXPLOSION OF ENERGY!!!---it's the craziest juxtaposition ever!
