I'm reaching the point where i'm going to begin buying all the dvd's of favorite shows playing on Antenna TV and Get TV channels just so I never ever have to watch their commercials again!

I've noticed the addition of more commercial breaks recently and you can clearly tell because episode scenes are being abruptly cut in the middle of dialogue to accommodate yet another break.

The last straw for me are those insufferable, disgusting Plexiderm commercials that show extreme close ups of ugly old people's eye bags. And to make matters worse, that damn commercial is about 10 minutes long. Eye bags for 10 minutes. Gross!

I change the channel immediately when it comes on to watch anything else...and 5 minutes later I switch back and see the close up of old man eye bags STILL PLAYING!!

I bought the first few seasons of All in the Family on dvd a couple weeks ago and began playing them instead of watching the TV and oh what a difference!! Full episodes, no breaks, unedited and no ugly eye bags!!

It's a whole new world for me now. So i'm making a list of all the shows I want on dvd and will never ever have to look at a close up of aging wrinkly eye bags again....unless i'm looking in the mirror lol.

Am I the only one getting extremely fed up with all these commercials?! It's almost to the point where there's more commercials than show!

I started watching DVDs a long time ago. Basically, the only 2 shows I watch on "TV" are "Wheel of Fortune" and "Days of our Lives".

I started watching DVDs a long time ago. Basically, the only 2 shows I watch on "TV" are "Wheel of Fortune" and "Days of our Lives".

Thankfully a lot of these classic series are affordable enough that I can get most of them. Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie & Partridge Family are all around 20 bucks for entire series.

Other favorites like ODAAT at 80 bucks and Patty Duke Show at 25 bucks a season (odd for such an old show) will have to wait, but i'm determined to replace all my favorite tv channel shows with dvd to avoid these increasingly annoying commercials.

What ever happened to the fun commercials of yesteryear for stuff like coffee, cereals, and soaps? Wouldn't it be so nice if classic commercials aired on these channels over eye bags, cleft lipped children and abused animals every 5 minutes?!

Off topic....I was completely addicted to Days from 1996 to 2004 but haven't watched since. After Marlena was a serial killer and they all went to New Salem, I tuned out it got too crazy for me lol.

I've also wondered what happened to the commercials you'd see on the Soaps...all the staples you get at the market. Now all you get are these ads I've complained about on other threads. The ones that really irritate me are all the ones begging for money...so they can buy more ads begging for more money. I normally don't mind Alex Trebek...except on that insurance commercial he's been on forever.

A lot of the cutting people off in the middle of sentences, at least here locally, are local ads that aren't timed correctly to the network break. It happens all the time on Antenna TV...I've complained to the local channel about it, but they don't care.

Thank goodness for DVDs and the mute button!

Off topic: I'm a guy and I was addicted to Another World for years. Taped it every day.

I'd love to see old commercials brought back for products that are still on the market like grocery stuff. I'm sure it would cost dirt cheap to air on these little watched channels anyway. But I wonder if they'd also have to pay actors who were in the originals again...and what if they're dead? Would they have to pay their families? I guess it would be too complicated.

But i'd much rather see commercials like we used to see in the 70's and 80's over what's on now...and that Alex Trebek commercial shilling his "3 P's" insurance is annoying. And don't get me started on that Cash Net commercial with that bumbling idiot in the super hero costume. It comes on every single break!

As for Another World, i'm also a guy and started watching at age 15 in 1985 when they started the Marley/Vicky storyline. I completely fell in love with bad Vicky and stayed with the show straight till it's end in '99. I still go to You Tube and relive old episodes from the 80's & 90's. (there's a whole slew of them there).
It's a shame they cancelled it for that ridiculous "Passions" that came next. I was so happy when I saw they axed that too.

Having gone totally DVD for almost 12 years all I can say is it's worth every penny. Once you go commercial-free you'll never want to return to your old ways. It's nice to know you'll never be insulted by whatever product will be tossed at you next, and no having to wait for the program to resume. Not cuts in the program as well. If you are considering turning to DVD all I can say is GO FOR IT!

I'm not usually bothered by the commercials on Antenna TV, but one that I dislike is the Life Alert ad where the old people fall and say "Help I've fallen and can't get up!" Damn I hate that commercial.

Years ago commercials used to be fun but not anymore, those days are over.

Last year from GetTV I recorded the Peter Loves Mary sitcom episodes, also recorded The Girl With Something Extra sitcom episodes. GetTV ran these in 40 minute time slots, which meant 25 minutes for the episodes and 15 minutes of commercials. While I'm not fond of 15 minutes of commercials, I assume the 40 minute time slot allowed them to air the shows uncut so I didn't complain.

I've been recording The Joey Bishop Show episodes from Antenna TV, a year ago or so when I first started recording, the episodes had 7 minutes of commercials, but now lately I've noticed the episodes have 8 minutes of commercials. There hasn't been any additional edits to the episodes, but I think what Antenna is doing is time compressing/speeding them up so they can squeeze in another minute of commercial time.

I made a list of all the shows i'm going to get. I'm far from rich so it will take a little time to accumulate everything. The only thing i'll have to get used to is getting up to change discs to different shows because I prefer variety over binge watching one specific show for hours.

Something tells me I better get it done soon because studios will catch on and raise prices of everything. Right now a lot of classic complete series out there are dirt cheap.

Years ago commercials used to be fun but not anymore, those days are over.

And came with fun catchy jingles to sing along to that made you happy. You don't see that anymore. It's as if they don't want the viewers to be happy anymore?

Remember the Purina "Chow chow chow" commercial? The Toys R Us "I don't wanna grow up" commercial? The Enjoli commercial "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan" and that shampoo commercial "I'm gonna wash that grey right outta my hair" lol. All fun, catchy tunes to sing along to. These need to come back!!

I actually saw unopened bottles of this selling on E bay once. I think your hair would smell anything BUT terrific if you used it now!

This product reminds me of that commercial from the 70's for a shampoo where the woman tells the viewer to tell a friend about it and "so on and so on and so on"...and blocks of different women heads appear on the screen...I have to go and Google that one now....

I found it quick...It was Faberge Shampoo!

Thanks for the suggestion!...I thought all streaming sites had a monthly fee, but doing a quick search just now I found Shout Factory TV website that has the entire Father Knows Best series to watch for free! This is on my list of dvd series to buy. (In fact I just ordered the first season dvd for 7 bucks brand new the other day, but the seasons that follow are all 25 bucks each.)

I think i'll do more searches of free streaming sites, get a cheap Roku for the TV and save money on the shows to stream free anytime. This is so great and I never knew you could get them free with no monthly fee.

If you got any free streaming website suggestions for classic 50's, 60's & 70's tv shows, feel free to share. :)

I'll stack cases containing the shows I decide to watch next to the player and insert disks as needed, so swapping disks doesn't bother me. I like the pleasure of not having someone interrupt a show to obnoxiously hawk a product I have no interest in purchasing. :angryfire It's worth every penny I spent to acquire the programs. I used the money I saved by not subscribing to cable to purchase my DVDs, and it is actually CHEAPER to get your shows on DVD than it is to subscribe to cable! :D

Years ago they made dvd players that can hold multiple discs inside and you could switch from one dvd to another via remote. I don't see them for sale anymore. Guess they weren't too popular.
I only have 3 different series on DVD at the moment and like you, I keep the current discs out next to the player and insert as needed. And yes, it's definitely a small price to pay to be rid of endless commercials!

I can now scratch another series off my list of shows to buy. TV and their endless commercials can suck it!! :D

The thing is, Antenna TV plays some shows that aren't available on DVD beyond their first season or not at all like Head of the Class, The Hogan Family, Silver Spoons, My Two Dads, 227, What's Happening Now, Archie Bunker's Place, Murphy Brown, Dear John, and I would buy many (if not all) of those shows day one if they came out on DVD. Till then, I'll have to learn to be content with what Antenna puts out there. Sure , some of their shows are edited, but not as badly as Viacom networks do, and the credit crunch personally doesn't bother me, but the fact that they air stuff like Gimme a Break practically every single day instead of good shows makes you stop and wonder. Just wanted to put my two cents in.:)

I think there's hope for shows that aren't out on DVD by them showing on these classic tv channels. I suspect it boosts their popularity and entices studios to release DVD sets of them if they catch an audience on these channels.

With The Jeffersons set I just bought for example. Only the first 6 seasons were released by studios and then suddenly stopped. For 7 years no other seasons were put out....It was a few years ago they finally released the whole series and I think having it airing on these channels helped that.

So the shows you mentioned above....if the studios see they have an audience watching them on TV, they may (hopefully) go ahead and release them to DVD. Of the ones you mentioned, i'd buy 227 in a heartbeat even though the last season without Sandra was terrible.

You know, I said the same thing for the longest time....until I started watching my AITF dvd's when they arrived. I didn't realize how much I missed seeing the closing credits again and it does give it a different "feel" when watching the show. So I finally understand what all the fuss is about regarding the crunches.

The last straw for me were the commercials that dealt with "bodily functions" (woman's hygiene and prescription drug commercials) that air at all times of the day. The advertisers, stations and networks show no regard as to WHO is in front of the TV when their ads are shown. You can have an ad for a car dealer on one minute, then it's an ad for a woman's product or a "dysfunction" pill the next. omg: Children need not see these kinds of ads, yet they do show them at times when children are watching TV. After seeing an ad for a dysfunction pill aired during a children's show I decided enough was enough, and since they've decided to make their money by showing these ads (actually commercials pay for 40% of programming costs, guess who pays the other 60%) :angryfire I no longer desired to pay a service to provide my programming. It's one of the best decisions I ever made in my life, and the quality of what I watch is much higher.

The one that has me scratching my head are those women's underwear commercials called Third Love with a young sexy woman on the bed in her bra selling lingerie. I highly doubt the "Barney Miller" audience is interested in that stuff!
And airing "dysfunction" pills during children's shows is way over the line. Advertisers usually know what audience is watching at a particular time, so airing that makes me question their intentions there.

The problem for me and for many other people is that I buy DVD's and never watch them because they're always there. There's no immediacy to it. I can always watch them. But if a show or movie shows up on TV I watch it. It's the same if I DVR it. It's always there so I never watch it, then eventually wind up deleting it or losing it when I have to change cable boxes.

This is off the topic, but one of the best reasons for collecting, is for the time when they remove that favorite show, and no channel has it. That's when I'm glad I bothered to tape or DVR it.

But when they're showing it, it's just easier to turn it on and mute those horrible ads.

Sometimes I'll record old sitcom episodes from TV and make my own DVD's if I think the show has slim chance of being released on DVD.

For example, I recorded from GetTV the Peter Loves Mary and Girl With Something Extra episodes.

And from Antenna TV I recorded The Joey Bishop Show, that series did get a DVD release but it's garbage so I'm staying with the Antenna TV recordings.

I probably won't record anything from GetTV anymore because they no longer telecast in fullscreen, their signal is now that widescreen crap with the black bars at the top and bottom, I hate widescreen. I'm glad I recorded Peter Loves Mary and Girl With Something Extra while the telecasts were still fullscreen.

I haven't recorded any show off TV in ages. I have most of the TV shows I love to watch on DVD, so there are a handful of "Grail" and "Bucket List" shows to keep my eyes peeled for and that's about it. It's a wonderful feeling to know they're available to watch anytime I want to, and they are uncut and devoid of commercials. Many of them are never shown on TV anymore, and if they are shown they're butchered to ribbons to make room for commercials. :( It's been a fun hobby, now all I have to do is watch them! :D

Unfortunately this has been going on for quite some time.I never had a problem with commercials until the late 1990s. That is when advertising started getting out of control. It is also when TV advertising was totally de-regulated. Nowadays TV in America has become one big Advertising Box.TV companies,at least most these days are unethical and criminal. And honestly if commercials are not regulated again, television deserves to go out of business. Remember advertising on American TV,both the amount and content used to be well regulated.

Allow me to also go a little off topic. I do not go to the movies anymore because I also do not like modern and current movies. However it's my understanding that these days even movie theatres bombard you with many commercials before the movie. That is what you get for your high ticket price. It used to be theatres never showed commercials.Whether it is TV,the movies and so on why is this even considered acceptable? Why do so few seem to even complain about all of this.

Today's viewers are so used to the overkill of advertising wherever they go they don't bother to complain, but those of use who would complain have instead decided to "vote with our eyeballs" (The networks are losing viewers and Pay-TV providers are losing subscribers) and acquire our entertainment via other means, such as streaming (many of which are free and commercial-free) and DVDs.
