The youngest sibling in a musically talented family, she appeared as part of the family act periodically in the mid-seventies, and then became known as a child actress on the final two seasons of Good Times, in the role of Penny Gordon Woods. She signed her first recording contract at 16. Her first two albums were moderately successful, but in her late teens, Jackson began to assert more creative control over her own work, and her third album, Control, was a huge success. It reached #1 on the Billboard 200, brought Jackson her first Grammy nominations, and included five singles that reached #5 or higher on the Hot 100, including her first #1 hit.

Jackson’s subsequent career has continued to be enormously successful.
