View Full Version : The new "Roseanne" is totally unbelievable
Wawwie 04-07-2018, 08:30 PM Since when does Roseanne Conner say grace before dinner?
Since when does Roseanne Conner judge a woman on what she does with her own body?
Since when would Roseanne Conner let politics come between her and her sister (best friend)?
This new "Roseanne Conner" is totally unbelievable and completely out of character. I understand that some people change as time goes by, but this is way too much. It's like "Roseanne Conner" had a complete personality transplant. I'm not buying it at all.
Roseanne BARR is pandering to the Trumpies, and it's so very, very sad. Such a sell out!

I kind of agree. I watched the first week. The two eps. and thought it was entertaining mainly from the nostalgic stand point of seeing the Connor family again!;) Beyond that I didn't find it to be that great of a deal! I even forgot to watch it last Tuesday!
Besides what you listed. I find the Becky surrogate story line to be a bit goofy! And also after 20 years wouldn't they have some new furniture and maybe some remodeling/updates in the house or something! Wouldn't the furniture and the house look really rundown with nothing different or new in 20 years? :p
Impressions 04-07-2018, 11:18 PM I have to agree. In the first episode, she was such a stereotype of a Trump supporter, it felt nothing like the Roseanne we knew. She's doing it all because she wants to "appeal to the working class," but guess what, not all of the working class voted for Trump, and it feels like she's doing it to purport her agenda!
I was also kinda surprised that they hardly changed the interior house in 20 years, you'd think they'd get a remodel (at least the Bradys did in the A Very Brady Christmas movie which came out almost 20 years after the original show started, but well, I guess Mike had money as an architect) but they must be so poor that it never happened...except for the fridge and the couch.
Wawwie 04-08-2018, 03:14 PM I wonder if they'll bring back Crystal, Nancy, Ann Marie, Bonnie or Leon.
Nancy is supposed to be in a episode sometime. I so wanted a Leon return. As I'm a big Martin Mull fan.
TV Guy 04-10-2018, 08:31 PM Crystal, Nancy, and Anne Marie (and her husband, Chuck) are all scheduled to appear. So is Bev.

Sara Gilbert confirmed on Watch What Happens Live that Roseanne is the only Trump supporter on the the show.

I think it's insane that people are slamming this show because it "changed". It's 2018. People need to get over it.
Svenfan1234 04-11-2018, 10:22 PM Some people... sheesh. I personally like the show, it's a reboot though, not the original, so there's bound to be change. It's inevitable. Over time, people change, so why shouldn't characters? It's called development and clever storytelling, not " selling out". Just my two cents.
visaman666 04-12-2018, 03:40 AM It's not a reboot. Same actors, same characters. Becky is 43 and too old to be a surrogate, so that storyline is finished.

With the surrogate storyline finished, is Sarah Chalke no longer on the show?
Couch Potato Amundo 04-12-2018, 12:50 PM things I would change about the revival if it were up to me:
1. the house changes to look like it's 20 years later
2. Jackie is a lesbian
3. Jerry and Jackie's kid are part of the series
4. DJ and his daughter actually have speaking lines
5. David is on business somewhere (not out of their daily lives because of divorce).
6. They say what happened to the restaurant
7. Darlene is a little more sarcastic like she used to be
8. Dan doesn't come off like he had a stroke and is the oldest person in the world.
TheLittleFairy 04-14-2018, 06:12 AM Its pretty realistic I think, MANY working class ppl who were more liberal have gone to the Trump conservative side.I know a woman who used to say "A womans body a woman's choice" But now she's a big right wing trump supporter and now says abortion is murder. It happens.
TheLittleFairy 04-14-2018, 06:16 AM I'm a mull fan too, but sadly he is not returning :(
TV Guy 04-14-2018, 06:40 AM With the surrogate storyline finished, is Sarah Chalke no longer on the show?
I believe so, at least for this season. She was only supposed to appear in a handful of episodes as a special guest star. It was nice of them to include her for old times’ sake and even have her pose on the couch with the rest of the cast for the publicity photos. I know Roseanne likes her a lot - that’s why she made an effort to include Sarah in season 8, even after Lecy returned. But she’s no longer playing a family member, and the show is focused on the family.
I will say: Sarah has greatly improved as an actress since her original time on the show. I always thought her portrayal of Becky was awkward and out of place. But she’s done a fine job as the new character in the revival.
Johnny Galecki is supposed to be appearing on this week’s episode. I know he was in Roseanne first but it’s going to be hard to picture him as anything but Leonard Hofstadter these days.

Won't be hard for me because I've never watched one single episode of TBBT.

Absolutely ! They can just stop watching it then. One show that is pro Trump and the snowflakes cannot handle it. The progressives already have have 99 percent of the media locked up on their side. That's not enough for them. Nothing but 100 percent compliance with fascism is acceptable to some on the far left.

Naah, she's just pandering to as many audience demographics as she can get. Why else turn the show into a knock-off of "All in the Family"? And give her credit, the number of times AitF's style has been duplicated, none of them were well-received by audiences. Until now. At least for now. That's pretty good, in my book.
Actually, real life families have been torn apart by politics. Even in (gasp) 2008. It's not a new phenomenon.
I'll agree, though, as Jackie in some ways seemed to me to be more in line with Trump. But lots of Obama voters did vote Trump for the reason Roseanne said in the premiere: "jobs".
I don't think the character is so much changed.
Unless they blow it with David's return, I'll keep watching.

I think the same can be said about BOTH sides. Whenever a liberal show comes out or a pro democrat show, the racists, bigots, homophobes and transphobes come out of the woodwork to bash it.
And I'm just saying racists, bigots, transphobes homophobes b/c you DID use the term "snowflake" so we can use our buzzwords also to describe the Right, since you categorize ANYONE who disagrees with ANYTHING Trump has ever said as a "snowflake".

My all time favorite one season and cancelled show was Dads on Fox. Think it came on 2013, with Martin Mull as one of the dads. Funniest, out loud funny as hell sitcom ever.

Regarding D.J.: really wierd seeing as how in the last season, D.J. was a total cinema nerd who idolized Stephen Speielberg, but now he is some kind of military guy. How Trump-esque.

I hope we see more of him.

Ridiculous analogy because conservative shows on mainstream TV virtually don't exist. Roseanne is one character that is now conservative and the entire show business world has turned on her.

That's because she had a complete personality transplant.
Perhaps you didn't watch the first nine seasons of "Roseanne" when she was absolutely nothing like how she is now.
The whole 'reboot' of "Roseanne" is phony.

Don’t watch it if you don’t like it. I like it, so I’ll keep watching it. The liberal reaction on this website to the show is funny. “OMG I hate this so that means everyone else should too! Waaah!”
Meanwhile the folks complaining are probably still watching the show.

I'm accurately comparing the first nine seasons to the present crap that's on now. Also, I can watch whatever I want which is the only way to make a fair comparison. "Roseanne" is so not the same character that she was in the first nine seasons and that's a fact.

I don’t hear anyone complaining about Goodman being back on the show even though Dan was killed off in the last episode. If you can suspend your disbelief about Dan still being alive, why is it so implausible to think people get more Conservative as they get older? Charlton Heston and Frank Sinatra got a lot more Conservative between the 1960s and 1980s, too. Ronald Reagan was a Commie before he became a Conservative.

Wawwie 04-26-2018, 08:25 PM Is D.J.'s black daughter adopted or are we supposed to believe that she is biologically D.J.'s??? There is no way that kid comes from a white father. She is way too dark. She does not look biracial at all. Sad that this innocent little girl is just a PC accessory for "Roseanne's" absurd political agenda.
Race's Girl 04-27-2018, 08:57 AM I feel so sad that Mark died before the show was redone
Svenfan1234 04-27-2018, 12:24 PM Newsflash: if you don't like the show, DON"T WATCH IT. It'll survive with or without you. Some people are just too unbelievable. This show isn't unbelievable, it's totally believable. It's about time we got a show that was Republican-led. And there's nothing wrong with it at all. It's a reboot and obviously more political than the original, but if you don't like it ,don't watch it and let the other people enjoy it without being bullied for liking it. Wahh wahh, Roseanne is a Trump supporter... I love it how some people on this thread are getting worked up over a TV show. Either you like what the TV show has to offer for you, or you don't. I like both the original Roseanne and the reboot. It's the same character on both shows...

Only the first episode was political. Episodes 2 through 5 shouldn’t offend anyone, but some people get off on being offended.
tlc38tlc38 04-27-2018, 06:35 PM :( Doesn't offend me any. Only the first show tackled politics, anyway. I usually just block out ANY political jokes/discussions on any show because none of them are actually funny or clever no matter which side they're pandering to.
I like the reboot.

The original show was good. THIS ONE JUST HAS AN UGLY AGENDA!!
Are you kidding? Are we talking about the same show, here? The original show totally had a liberal agenda... with stories revolving around the advocation of birth control, unemployment, premarital sex, gay/lesbian characters, same-sex marriage, tax inequality, gender inequality, smoking pot and I'm sure there were lots more. So you can't say that the reboot only had an agenda.
I don't even identify as a conservative and I totally can see the liberal agenda in the original show.
I'll put it out there, I hate the transsexual grandson. There is a need for some reason to promote this garbage and mental illness as normal.
Well, let's see, judging from this comment it's clear to me that 1) you don't understand the definitions of transgender (or the obsolete term, "transsexual") and mental illness 2) you fail to understand that neither of those terms are related 3) fail to see that Mark Conner Healy does NOT exhibit being "transsexual" or being mentally ill.
Someone only has a mental illness if they exhibit severe distress or disability. I have not seen Mark exhibit either of these. He seems to be very comfortable in his own skin.
Now, in the second episode of the revival series, he was bullied because there was a lack of acceptance from his peers for his gender expression and that may have caused him distress, but that would be a product of a different kind distress, like anxiety and/or depression. But we haven't seen this, either.
Second of all, the term "transsexual" is obsolete, and not a medical term anymore, the term to use is transgender. In my opinion, the term "transsexual" is bigoted and is used to discredit transgender people. Mark does not fit the definition of transgender or "transsexual" as you call it. By definition, a person fits the definition of transgender if they have the desire to change their sex OR went through an operation to change their sex. Mark does not have a desire to do this, and obviously he has not changed his sex, and still prefers to identify as a boy. Also, he's still a kid and hasn't even hit puberty yet, for God's sake. Also, being transgender does not mean an individual has a mental illness. Not all transgender experience distress with their transition, and if they did, that'd be considered gender dysphoria, which is not a mental illness either, as the mismatch between body and internal gender sense is not distress, but rather the anxiety and depression that comes out of it.
This brings me to what he does identify as, and that's gender nonconforming, which refers to behaviors not matching the gender norms or stereotypes of the gender assigned at birth. Gender nonconformity is NOT a mental illness. Gender nonconforming people do not exhibit distress or disability. Mark seems to be happy and comfortable identifying as a boy, he likes to wear more feminine clothes because they're more "creative."
The show is in no way saying that transgender or gender nonconforming people are mentally ill, nor is it normalizing mental illness: that's just your ignorant and bigoted way of discrediting and discriminating against the transgender and gender nonconforming people just because they are different from what you consider to be normal. You're also implying that they don't deserve to be represented on TV just because they are different from your worldview of what it is to be normal. The reason it was written into the show was to show to people like you that the world is diverse, and that they can live positive lives in the face of adversity. But yet you took it upon yourself to spin it negatively and call it "garbage" because you can't accept that diversity is being presented on TV. Times are changing and maybe you should open your mind and think before you write something so bigoted and ignorant.
Wawwie 05-05-2018, 08:31 PM ^^^^ props: :clap :clap :clap :thanks:
RetroGuy2000 05-15-2018, 12:35 AM I'm enjoying the show. I loved the first eight seasons, hated season nine, and this new season ten is decent. Yes, it's odd that Roseanne Conner became conservative, but many older people do.
I find it odd that Dan, a home remodeler by profession, never remodeled the house, even one room, in the last 20 years. Still, I can ignore that and enjoy the show.
It's not as great as it once was; Jackie is still too dopey, and why has she not even mentioned her son Andy? And the show isn't as funny as it once was. Some parts feel "off": maybe the jokes, or the writing, or some of the acting. But overall, I'll keep watching. (At least until Jackie becomes an idiot, as she did on the original run.)
