View Full Version : The Golden State Killer (East Area Rapist • Original Night Stalker)
There are quite a few photos of the community town hall meeting where that man declared he'd be ready if the EAR went to his house (he and his wife were later attacked). I wonder if DeAngelo can be spotted in any of those photos of the town hall meeting
Tighthead 04-26-2018, 09:19 PM They explicitly said they had his DNA not familial DNA
Again, you seem very certain that familial DNA was explicitly excluded.
Curious if you could provide specific quotes that make my supposition wrong.
These sources suggest I may not have been 100% wrong, but you were emphatic and certain.

flytrapp 04-26-2018, 09:43 PM Imagine that....you commit a string of near-perfect crimes and get away with it for years....until someone related to you decides they are bored and need to know that they are 11% English, 80% Italian, and 9% native American. And BAM, you get ratted out LMAO. I think it's fantastic. And honestly, the cops admit that Deangelo's name was never once in any file in the entire investigation until last week, so without this "slip" (not a slip by EAR, I might add) he may have never been caught. Very scary.
flytrapp 04-26-2018, 09:54 PM About the DNA (since there have been some debate) LE got DNA through a private company that collects DNA from customers to give them insight into their ancestors and heritage. LE used DNA left by EAR and compared them against DNA profiles that the private company had collected. They got a familia match, and it lead them to Deangelo. From there, they put him under surveillance and when he discarded something in public that contained his DNA LE collected it and ran his profile specifically. It was a match to EAR.
I've been all over this for last 24 hours, and I've read almost everything out there a person can read. Thankfully I work for myself and won't be fired for doing no work all day LOL.
I don't have the same dislike for McNamara as some, but the truth is she was just as obsessed with this crime as we are all with UM. That's all. Great that she wrote a book and had the luxury of getting it published because her husband is a D list celebrity, but she truly did not help the actual investigation in any way. I'm sure actual victims and their families are grateful for Larry Crompton, Larry Pool, Paul Holes, Carol Daly, and many others who worked the investigation for years.

I made all of my statements yesterday based on the answers and how they deliberately phrased them in the press conference, and also tempered them with "we don't know everything yet, lets wait for the facts, they're purposely withholding info while they still pile on charges" statements.
Clearly we now know today they did after all use ancestry sites. Hence my earlier reply of "Well I'll be". I'm certainly not going to hold to something that is factually inaccurate for the sake of being stubborn.

And you just know it's going to be that screw up relative, that we all have, that did him in. :D
flytrapp 04-26-2018, 10:24 PM I agree, and if I was that "screw up relative", I'd sooo be in hiding right now.
JannTosh 04-26-2018, 10:29 PM if you read some of the old discussions about him here many theorized he would likely be an ex cop or ex military. We are good sleuths
one person said he might not have been military though because they would have collected his DNA. Guess not

Unfortunately this is all going to probably delay justice for this monster, but as someone who works in the InfoTech industry this is going to be riveting to follow.
I haven't been able to find the granularity in the news articles that it was a 3rd party company, they all keep saying they used "the sites". But however they did it is probably going to come with a ton of legal challenges.
- If they were entering them into the sites themselves, did LE violate any of their terms of service in using them in this way?
- Did they have the right to obtain the DNA of a private citizen, who wasn't a murder suspect, through this method?
- If a third party company gave them their records, did their vendor contracts with the ancestry sites allow for them to give LE their files without informing them? (Since the sites are claiming in press statements they didn't offer assistance). If not, this may not do anything about EAR's case but these companies will go into lockdown mode for future requests.
- How will the sites like ancestry.com and 23andme respond? This is going to potentially dissuade potential customers from using their services.
It opens the door to some potentially massive big brother stuff. The response from all sides will be very interesting.

Don’t blame what they said, blame your interpretation.

flytrapp 04-26-2018, 10:52 PM drew790, I agree there may be some tricky stuff with the familia DNA and the ancestory sites. However, I'm thinking it's probably in the terms and conditions that the customer "signs" or checks off. I bet it states that the company owns the DNA and can do what they want with it, even if the customer doesn't fully understand such. I'm not on facebook, but I've heard there is some clause that states they reserve the right to use any images uploaded (for example). I'm sure LE has covered their arses, but you are right, EAR's lawyer will likely do some legal tap-dance in an attempt to get the DNA thrown out. Ugh.

Yeah, I can't wait to see how it all plays out. I hope they have everything covered.
I still wonder about the third party thing though. If they really did provide data without the sites cooperating then they are going to be sued into oblivion. A vendor can't just hand over data about customers that aren't theirs. It probably wouldn't do anything for the prosecution of EAR but it might prevent the method from being used on other cold cases.
I can't wait till we get more information. The technology aspect is truly fascinating.

That’s exactly what those sites say. You submit your DNA, and it becomes the property of that company. I stated earlier that I have not submitted my DNA to any of those sites for this exact reason. I was not worried about law-enforcement getting my information via a warrant, but I was more concerned about insurance companies using my DNA in an attempt to deny claims based on pre-existing conditions, etc. Definitely going to be interesting to see how it goes from here....
Terrific little video interview with Paul Holes, albeit only running 2 minutes in length.
Just a teensy-weensy bit more background on how this all came to fruition.

Retired cold case investigator tracked the ‘Golden State Killer’ to his door (https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/04/26/retired-cold-case-investigator-tracked-the-golden-state-killer-to-his-door/)
flytrapp 04-26-2018, 11:34 PM LooksLikeCRicci, that's exactly what I was thinking. They own your stuff and can do what they want. My husband and my business partner's husband are both in law enforcement, and while we are in Canada where things are very different, both husbands were saying that (at least here) LE can blow in and seize the information with a warrant and possibly without a warrant when it comes to these private companies. My husband always teases me when I throw a cigarette butt out the window of the car...he says "they are going to find a dead body in that ditch and you will be suspect number after they run the DNA" LOL. Mind you, just like you, I've never signed up for one of those sites because I'm wary of what they can do with it. I don't have anything to hide but I don't want any company selling my information or DNA profile....that's as personal as it gets and I'm not interested. Speaking of selling information, maybe that's another angle to consider. Maybe these companies can/will/do sell the information if they have such a disclosure. Take your money and then sell your info to someone else and make twice the mileage. Kind of sh1tty, but it would be perfectly legal if the client signed the contract. Anyway, I agree, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
I don't know if others will agree, but I'm more satisfied that he was eventually caught than the consequences he will receive. He's 72. Even if he gets 30 years he will be dead before then. I think the "closure" aspect for victims is better than anything at this point. I can imagine just knowing who he is brings much satisfaction. I can't fathom going to a mall, for example, and wondering "is that guy him?" at every man I saw, for years! How awful and scary that must have been for victims. At least now everyone knows. I'm still shock he was caught. I hope Jane and her son spit on him in court.

Yup. It's all very Gattica where this stuff could be used. Hard pass.
unsolved1981 04-27-2018, 12:49 AM It'll be interesting to see where this goes legal-wise with the genealogy websites. I know of another case where they were able to match a name with a unknown person but so far it hasn't been enough to solve it I'm referring to the unknown person who used the name Joseph Newton Chandler whose DNA was plugged into a genealogy site and they were able to come back with his real name possibly being Nichols. But they aren't even sure if he's a criminal or just someone who changed his identity for benign reasons Beyond identity theft which is the only crime they've been able to identify him committing.

Yes, he is. As a matter of fact he e-mailed Jane Carson Sandler to tell her the news yesterday.
Jane was interviewed on Megan Kelly's morning program on Thursday morning.

GDAWG 04-27-2018, 01:38 AM So are we expecting either Dateline, 48 Hours or 20/20 to cover this?
XCalibur 04-27-2018, 02:11 AM Welcome back, XCalibur!
I went back and watched the UM segment last night and they wondered why the attacks stopped cold turkey. They proposed three theories: he was dead, he became disabled, or he was in jail. It doesn’t appear that any of these happened so what did happen? He went from rapes in northern California to murders in SoCal and then he seems to have quit. Why?
This guy was one of the most heinous criminals ever for the terror he caused. I can’t imagine waking up to a flashlight and gun in my face, being tied up and raped, and then having him hang out in the house for hours. This guy is sick.
I’m glad he was caught so he can face some kind of justice, and hopefully LE can learn something about what made him tick. Hopefully they can go “Mindhunter” on him and help catch the next freak from doing this type of thing again. I’m also glad he has a face and name so it takes some of the legend out of this case.
Thank ya sir!
We both know that this guy's life will be researched all the way back to his crib. Supposedly his family members are cooperating with police as well so you can bet we will learn a lot more. He will join the ranks of Bundy, Ridgeway, and Ramirez. There was a lot of unique things about this guy, (killing of both men and women, apparently quitting cold turkey in 1986, and eluding captue for so long) so he will be an interesting study for serial killer researchers for a long time.
From what we know, sounds like DeAngelo had a bit of a bad reputation. Though many people said he seemed normal, others apparently were very uneasy about him. Supposedly threatened violence against his neighbors for years over trivial things. Had a bad temper as well. I'm almost certain troubled relationships with women will be found out about as well, almost had to. Will be interesting to see what kind of relationship he had with his mother. He obviously had contempt for women. Strange for a man who raised three daughters.
Not atypical for serial killers what is leaking about him. Although many accounts of them are that they seem nice and normal, seems like there are always stories that surface about them showing a fww screws lose, the wolve's teeth beneath the sheep's clothing so to speak. Bundy was said to threaten violence against his girlfriend Cass, Ridgeway was often compared to Jack Nicholson off the Shining, Gacy was known to have a temper as well. But it seems the incidents are just isolated enough no one jumps to the conclusion they might be a serial killer.
tsaun 04-27-2018, 05:10 AM There's some guy over at the EAR boards who said someone with the last name of 'Deangelo' was his Person of interest. That was posted last summer.

I saw the interview with one of the the chief investigators. He said he had a database of over 8,000 suspects. After DeAngelo was arrested he went back and looked at the database and DeAngelo was not in it.
So, if DeAngelo's name was mentioned on the EAR/ONS forum last year, that is very odd. I would like to see the actual post.

When the story first broke I read a few things that said Deangelo was on earlier (circa 70s, 80s, 90s) suspect lists. Now I’m mostly reading that he was a new suspect, only brought to LE attention through familial DNA.
Padfoot 04-27-2018, 05:45 AM Does anyone think Deangelo read or contributed to the online EAR discussions?
Thiussat 04-27-2018, 05:49 AM It is now confirmed he was tracked down through an Ancestry DNA database, just as I had suspected. I really hope the prosecuting attorney has his 4th amendment arguments in line before trial because this could easily be seen as an "unreasonable" search.
I am glad they got him, but am not happy that nothing is private anymore. I am not happy that the Police can go "fishing" in a private database with no specific information on any specific individual.
EDIT: I've read the TOS to some of these ancestry websites. They all say they will not turn over any information without a "valid warrant or subpoena." This means the Police likely had a warrant. The question is what did the warrant say? I mean that's a pretty "broad" warrant. "Let us go fishing in your database."
James T 04-27-2018, 06:28 AM Cannot see the objection in a case like this, without it this pos would have lived a peaceful existence until his death, now he can either end his existence or spend whatever he has left rotting in a tiny room. Why would they need specific information? They had a specific DNA match. This is no different than if a relative were arrested & he was traced via a swab being taken-as happened in a 30 odd year case here in the UK a while back. Loving that these pieces of garbage are being bought to justice due to advances in science, imagine the fear in these murderers & rapists knowing that if any of their relatives get arrested or go relative hunting they will be caught.
soilentgreen 04-27-2018, 08:02 AM It sounds like the police didn't actually need a warrant to use Ancestry. They behaved like a typical customer of the site, put the DNA profile up and then got a relative's match. It would have then been easy enough to find a male relative via public records who fit the parameters of age, do a curbside/discarded trash DNA fetch and see if it matched.
Once you place your DNA profile up on genealogical sites, you're basically allowing your genetic material to be utilized for any sort of investigation, whether it's criminal or healthcare related. There's already been a case (http://www.theadvocate.com/new_orleans/news/article_1b3a3f96-d574-59e0-9c6a-c3c7c0d2f166.html) where a guy was required to provide his DNA due to his father's genealogical DNA profile being a false partial match on a cold murder case.
Corkys-Place 04-27-2018, 08:39 AM Does anyone think Deangelo read or contributed to the online EAR discussions?
For a while there I thought EAR / ONS himself created that website (sorry I've forgotten it again) which described each attack in insane detail, even mentioning what type of ski mask / clothes DeAngelo was wearing with computer generated pictures.

TheCars1986 04-27-2018, 10:35 AM See this is my very problem with McNamara from the beginning when she started writing. It smacked of her trying to claim ownership of the case by rebranding a name that was never used and would be confusing if you looked at old newspaper accounts because no one uses it. Now the Press is making it out like she's the star of solving it, instead of the police who actually did the work.
Now her c-list celebrity husband is claiming that the name itself is what solved it gimme a Break
It's kind of like this forum taking credit for the recent Lauria Bible & Ashley Freeman developments. It makes no sense to me. She wrote a book about the case, which renewed interest in it publicly, but the police solved this because of DNA. Not her book.
I mean if Ann Rule wrote a book 2 years before a major break into a case, her fans would be crediting her too, but not to the degree that Michelle McNamara is getting. And I don't like the dig that Oswald gave to the police.

If THIS is how they did it-- I don't see a legal problem. They used the killer's DNA to see if they could locate any relatives. This is markedly different than serving 23andMe or Ancestry.com with an investigative subpoena, asking them to hunt through their databases to see if there was a match. According to your article, this particular database was a free one...
It's a genius technique, actually. I'm impressed as hell.

Then they probably should have reviewed the terms of service before submitting their DNA to the system. Ancestry and 23andMe are both pretty clear about how they will turn it over to LE with a proper warrant.
I don't necessarily see it being any different than me serving Verizon with an Investigative Subpoena to see who owns a cell phone that was used in the commission of a crime.... and we do that all the time.

Which is still valid. There's Gattica-level future implications with this technology and these services beyond just being used for law enforcement.
It is very big brother-ish, and I guarantee this newfound genealogy industry will have a response in terms of future TOS revisions and process changes to try to ensure they don't lose their customer base to privacy concerns. But if there was ever a single case worth this never being able to happen again, this is the case to do it for.
The response will be fascinating to watch.

XCalibur 04-27-2018, 11:58 PM Anyone know if DeAngelo was present at that town hall meeting with the guy who bragged he would never allow someone to come in and do that to his wife and they wound up getting attacked? What year was that anyway? I wonder if that was when he was still a cop and he was present in uniform? If he was, man it would be creepy to watch the video of the town hall and see DeAngelo's reaction when he said that knowing he was thinking I will show you.

It could be him or it could not be, but the resemblance is striking to me. There were more than one "town hall" style meetings, in at least 1976 and 1977. He was with the Exeter PD from 73-76 and then the Auburn PD from 77-79, but I can't say if he was there in any official capacity. We're all just going off a lot of Google-fu until we get some concrete answers out of him.
Corkys-Place 04-28-2018, 01:22 AM DeAngelo looks much older than 72. The maniac that was able to creep around in the dark and make fast getaways on foot and a bike has been reduced to THIS.

Just goes to show you, no matter how smart, strong, and fast you are, time catches up with everyone.
I grudgingly admit the guy was a sharp and elusive cookie. Eluded law enforcement for over four decades. And hell wasn't even captured because of his own mistake. He was captured because of dogged persistence of law enforcement and his DNA, something he couldn't even reasonably have known at the time would eventually nail him. If he made one mistake, it may have been staying in the Sacramento area. Had he moved to another part of the country, he may still have been found but it would have definitely taken longer.
But God gets them all in the end.

Is it me or is that old photo of DeAngelo creepy as Hell? Especially knowing the monster he would become. Probably already was.
Of course all old photos like that were the eyes and part of the face in shadow tend to look creepy, but still.
He may just be a pathetic old man now, but he was a real life boogeyman for sure.

In all honesty XCalibur, I thought this piece of trash was long dead (I don't think he's far from it if these photos are anything to go by).
At least we have a name, a real face (seeing his mugshot next to that composite freaked me a bit) and hopefully LE can extract some long awaited answers from this creature before he drops dead. Although I reckon he'd be a stubborn old bastard.
PS : Great to see you back posting!
Thiussat 04-28-2018, 09:08 AM If THIS is how they did it-- I don't see a legal problem.
Yep, I am familiar with this stuff because I am into genealogy. GEDMatch is an open source database that's free to use and users upload their 23&Me, Ancestry or FTDNA profiles to it and it consolidates it all and finds your blood relatives. It's a way for users of all the services to have their profiles in one place. (So a 23&Me user can match to Ancestry users, etc.).
Users understand when they use GEDmatch that it is not private and the Internet at large has access to your DNA profile (although your name in anonymized).
So they simply uploaded his profile to GEDMatch and found a relative of his. From there they somehow found out who this person was. After that, they simply did public searches (perhaps with Police help) to discover this person's 70ish year old male relatives. They get a suspect, go to his house, steal his DNA from his trash and find a 100% match. Bingo.
DALLASTEXAN!! 04-28-2018, 09:12 AM How I pictured the Sacramento County DA's Office upon getting the results from the Crime Lab. Or, hell. How I pictured the crime lab the moment DeAngelo's DNA came up a 100% match to EAR/ONS:

alistaircranium 04-28-2018, 09:14 AM I just don't understand the logic in willingly turning your DNA over to a corporation. I like being able to trace my family tree through these sites but I would never give them my DNA. For example, I was able to find the church my great-great grandparents were married in in England, which was really interesting to me, but I have no desire to find out just how "Caucasian" they were. I don't understand why anyone would care to break down their ethnicity into percentages. Nothing's more annoying than people who use these sites and find out they're like 3% Cherokee or something and then go bragging that they are "Native American".

Some people don't have the luck or luxury to know enough about their origins to know who their parents are, let alone where their great great grandparents were married. And I know some people who genuinely, truly want to know where they came from / their family history so badly that they don't feel whole.
Someone near and dear to me did the ancestry one and was able to trace his bloodline to prove he is a direct descendent of a founding father.

Yeah, and I don't think that's necessary. Now your friend can claim he's more "American" than other people because he's related to a founding father. I think that's silly. And a lot of it is borderline racist, IMHO.

Like I said - SOME people feel that need. Like people who were adopted, or those who were brought here due to slavery (but from where?). Or just those who don't relate to their current family and want to know more about their roots. It happens
Huh? There's nothing racist about it. There's also benefits to proving you're descended from a Founding Father, like college scholarships for your children. Same goes for if you are Native American. And if you knew the person I'm referring to in question, you'd know they aren't racist and a kind individual who was curious about their ancestry. Go troll somewhere else. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't make you a superior. It just makes you sound pompous and uneducated.

flytrapp 04-28-2018, 12:08 PM Anyway....
The point is for whatever reason someone related to EAR uploaded their info into that database to get a better understanding of their heritage and that ultimately busted him. He was on NO radar at all after all these years. It's all so surreal to me.

Exact same thing happened with Ted Bundy. He had a break up that supposedly fueled a lot of his rage. I can't remember her name, but the bizarre thing is he got her back just to prove a point then dumped her again, and still had the rage.
GDAWG 04-28-2018, 11:57 PM 48 Hours added the update of DeAngelo's arrest to their episode on the Golden State Killer and mentions that he's on suicide watch while in prison.
flytrapp 04-29-2018, 12:19 AM I watched the 48 Hours thinking it would be a new episode. It was not. It was a rework of the one from a year ago or so. It was the same nonsense about Michelle McNamara, and now I see why people are getting annoyed. The update with the arrest was a 5 minute additive, but yet at least 15 minutes was devoted to talking about McNamara, interviewing her husband, etc. There were lots of details left out. Carol Daly and Larry Poole were not interviewed or even mentioned. Yet they need to go on about McNamara and calling him the Golden State Killer? So annoying. McNamara was apparently a great writer and a true crime enthusiast. Awesome. But even LE said there was nothing in her book that they didn't already know...probably because she got her book's content from LE. Ugh.
I grew up near Toronto Canada, so I'm going to write a book about Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka, back-date it to the early 90s, and when I die the headlines will read: "Flytrapp solved the case, this person is so brilliant!" BAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

XCalibur 04-29-2018, 01:04 PM In retrospect, given what we know now I'm honestly a little surprised that DeAngelo's name was never on law enforcement's radar before. Their was considerable speculation over the years that EAR was either ex military or had worked in law enforcement. Both turned out to be true.
DeAngelo worked on two different area police forces. And he was fired for the police equivalent of a dishonorable discharge. Seems to me like he would have at least been looked at long ago.
Makes you wonder if the police didn't take the law enforcement theory as seriously as the general public did and didn't look closely and their own current and former rosters. If they had, DeAngelo may have been caught long ago.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the police to much here, they were doggedly persistent and eventually brought this to a close which is good. But its still a little surprising D'Angelo wasn't at least looked at at some point over the years.

Agreed. I shared the same thoughts when the news broke.
drew790 04-29-2018, 03:00 PM I disagree.
Law enforcement is a common career path for those who are ex-military. DeAngelo would not have been the only one at the time that had that background.
The shoplifting discharge isn't exactly a direct leap to "he's a rapist!", it would have been akin to the hundreds of tips they'd have gotten for silly "my neighbour's laundry is whiter than mine" reasons. We make the ransacker connection now in hindsight, they didn't back then. They didn't even know the ONS crimes were the work of the same person until DNA testing in the 90s.

This. There was varying speculation about the occupation of EAR/ONS: military, healthcare (due to some of the victims either visiting or being employed at hospitals) and builder/professional painter. A guy fired from the police department for shoplifting wasn't going to be looked at the way that someone with a burglary or rape conviction would have been. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack; usually the actual perpetrator isn't even on investigators' radar.
Hot Jock 04-29-2018, 08:52 PM I never bought into the ex-military and/or cop theory simply because I pegged him to be considerably younger than he actually was. I thought he was in his late teens at the beginning of the rapes. He simply wouldn’t have been old enough to be ex-military or a cop and it would have been damn near impossible for him to have been active military considering how much free time he had. Turns out he was already 30 years old when the EAR attacks began. Most people were way off, including the majority of his victims. Some of which who spent hours upon hours with him. *cringe*
The fact that this guy’s name was NEVER on anybody’s suspect list for over 40 years is simply astonishing.
This dude had ALL of us fooled one way or another. Fact is, he never really lost a step and quit while he was way ahead. It’s just that science/technology caught up in the end.

Curious why you thought he was in his late teens. I always felt he was way to smart and seemed to have to much knowledge of police methods and had to be in his late 20's at least. Although serial killers have been known to begin in their teens, for one to be as elusive and proficient as he was is extremely rare. Even if a teenager started into serial murder that early, I highly doubt they would be as sure of themselves and proficient as EAR seemed to be. In fact DeAngelo appears to have been the Visila ransacker as well, so they were no doubt practice runs for what he was to become.
Again, not knocking law enforcement here. This was undoubtedly a needle in a haystack situation. I'm just curious if at any time over the past four decades police rosters of current and former officers were ever investigated. Just seems like the theory might have been taken more seriously and he may have been caught sooner. Difficult to say. Its not a criticism, we are all human and this guy slipping through the cracks considering how much he knew about law enforcement methods is not that surprising. Just a curiosity and discussion fodder is all.

http://fox40.com/2018/04/25/who-is-east-area-rapist-suspect-joseph-james-deangelo2/
Late Tuesday night, Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested at his home along Canyon Oak Drive in Citrus Heights. According to property records, DeAngelo was living in the Citrus Heights home since 1983.
I've read some conflicting reports that he may have taken residence in SoCal for a short time in the early 80s but I cannot remember where I read or heard that.
I think it's safe to say that if he did move from NorCal, it wasn't for long.
Hot Jock 04-29-2018, 09:59 PM Curious why you thought he was in his late teens.
A lot of people did for numerous reasons. I’ll spare the laundry list and put down one reason that I’ve never actually seen discussed.
He had a habit of stealing beer and liquor out of his victims’ homes. Often times drinking it right on the spot. Now, he was known to sometimes eat some of their food out of the refrigerator as well but he pretty much always stole alcohol if it was there. Again, this doesn’t seem like much on the surface, but if you look deeper it makes a great deal of sense. At least to me anyway and here’s why; He didn’t care what brand of beer it was or what type of liquor was there, he drank pretty much anything he could get his hands on. This is not the behavior of an adult drinker. People acquire tastes for certain brands of beer and particular types of liquor (I enjoy whisky and rum but I can’t stand gin or tequila) as they mature. Unless of course, they are a hardcore alcoholic, but this dude was way too athletic and in shape to be one. The legal drinking age in California was 21 even back then, so it seemed to me to be more of an opportunity type of thing. Basically, “I can’t buy this, but here it is! I’ll take it!” At least that’s the way I thought when I was 17-20 years old. I would have drank pretty much anything I could get my hands on back then, but by the time I was 30 I was extremely selective about that type of thing. Partly because, duh, I’ll just buy whatever I have a taste for.
Again, this is just 10% of the reason that I thought he was in his teens. There are plenty of others, including firsthand testimony of many of his victims, that thought he was that age. This is just one little thing I thought of a long time ago that I’ve never really bothered to put into words.
Please forgive me if there are any typos and/or run on sentences. I’m a passenger in a car right now and it’s bumpy af! 😂

I'm still partial to my first, A&E Cold Case Files (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1095724/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1), as well. Although I must say, THS Investigates (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1433193/?ref_=nv_sr_2) was also a very strong one-hour documentary. Coincidentally, the E! THS doc was produced by Todd Lindsey, the same producer of HLN's Unmasking a Killer.
flytrapp 04-29-2018, 10:01 PM As far as his age, most victims told LE that they thought he was quite young. Many described him as between 18 and 21 years old in the beginning. So that's where that theory came into play. I read somewhere recently that LE thought he would be around 62 years old today, but in fact (as we all know now) he is 72.

Exactly correct. It was almost unanimous between his early victims that he was very young, 17-20.

From my point of view, these are simply not strong enough to declare the guy a teenager. But thats just me.
Eyewitness testimony guessing his age when his face was covered in almost all his attacks is also pretty iffy too.
Like I said, for a teenager to be this proficient and elusive as a killer and this adept in police methods is highly unlikely.
flytrapp 04-29-2018, 10:26 PM XCalibur, I totally get what you are saying, for sure.
But...his physique, they language he used, the apparent crying for his mommy, etc, all kind of pointed to someone young. Perhaps he was smart enough to use these aspects to his advantage. And again, most of the victims ID'd him as a young man, most likely a teenager.
I think another thing that just confirmed his young age to LE was the apparent "homework" found that was thought to be his. Obviously it probably has nothing to do with the case knowing what we know now, but at the time LE thought it was a possible lead, which only supported the teenager theory.
Personally, I thought it would be odd that a teenager would be as brave as he was, as calm and calculating and well thought out as he was. Having said that, when I was a teenager I was fearless. I look back at the risks I took as a young person and I was definitely much more brazen than I would be now.

Yes, teenagers are often fearless as long as they are within their comfort zone. Most of them though, once they get out of it, its a whole different story. They often do things that are not smart or could be considered bold, but thats usually more because of lack of knowledge and life experience than it is straight up courage. At least in most cases.
But to engage in a life of crime and commit offenses that can get you put away for life, thats not exactly a comfort zone for someone so young, and it to me would be far more likely to require someone with a certain amount of self assurance and experience to do it so proficiently. It turned out to be the case.
As far as the whole calling for Mommy thing goes, again thats often a deep rooted inner child kind of complex that can exist in anyone and not neccessarily pointing to a teenager. Even self assured adults deep in their subconscious can revert back to a child like state at times. Its not neccessarily indicative of a younger person.
But again, this is just my take.
flytrapp 04-29-2018, 11:14 PM And I agree with you 100%. My main reason for thinking EAR was young was because of what the victims were saying. I'm guessing he was toned and slight, and that's why they thought he was so young. It's hard to believe that the majority of victims would think he was a teenager or in his early twenties when he was in fact around thirty years old, but that's what they reported.
That's another thing that is odd to me. Why start this spree when you are 30? I know the Visalia stuff took place earlier, but the rapes started when he was 30 and when he did his last known kill in 1986 he was 41 years old. Why stop then? And why escalate at 30 which would be considered to be late for that behaviour? So many strange questions to this case.
TheCars1986 04-30-2018, 06:53 AM A lot of people did for numerous reasons.
Agreed.
This is a good point about the age, and was one of the main reasons I thought this guy was in his early twenties. And the victims also had him pegged much younger than he really was.

Debbie Domingo (featured in this clip) and Shelly Cruz (Janelle's younger sister) are so visible on the EARONS boards and on Social Media that anytime someone mentions Michelle McNamara's name with regards to the re-interest in the case, they should mention theirs as well (along with all LE, etc).
I believe Debbie and Shelly wrote CBS several years ago, along with Investigation Discovery about covering the case which led to last years Paula Zahn, People Magazine, CBS 48 Hours, among others. They (Shelly and Debbie), got that snowball rolling by sheer force of will.
That's not to mention that going back to the early 2000s, Bruce Harrington (brother of Keith Harrington) spearheaded the passing of Prop 69 (http://articles.latimes.com/2004/dec/24/local/me-onthelaw24). At the official presser last week when Bruce spoke and perhaps did a little grandstanding and calling out voters for their apathy towards these subjects, I wasn't bothered in the least. The man has waited nearly 40 years for justice and has spent his own personal wealth to get it.
There are so many people pulling this cart, namely the families and detectives, retired and otherwise. I'm still so shocked there has finally been resolution. I feared there never would be, even after this latest push in the media.
Sacramento authorities announced the arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo in connection to the East Area Rapist case. Also known as the Golden State Killer, police say he killed at least 12 people, raped more than 50 and committed 100 burglaries between 1974 and 1986.

They all just seem so relieved. I heard in an interview that Jane Carson (EAR victim #5) did with Megyn Kelly that the first person to contact her after the arrest was Larry Crompton. And Jane turned around and called Carol Daly who initially took her to the hospital after her attack in 1976.

That's my feeling as well, seems too different. We'll see I guess, since they have the DNA it should be a quick validation.
I feel we're going to see a lot of these, for lack of a better term, groupies come out of the woodwork now that he's been IDed. Some will fit, a lot will not, others will be found to be attention seeking.

'Golden State Killer' suspect makes unexpected court appearance
The 72-year old man accused in a spree of rapes and murders across California decided to show up in court Wednesday morning.
Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. was back in a courtroom in somewhat of a surprise appearance.
The proceedings took place because the defense team has filed a motion to suppress evidence obtained by a search warrants executed in this case.
---
Now most likely he hasn't raped and murdered in a long time. What evidence is he so worried about? Maybe some of the items he stole from the home invasions?
drew790 05-02-2018, 07:35 PM And now the legal back/forth will begin. I guess this is continuing tomorrow so we'll maybe get more details of what they're trying to suppress and the reasoning.
Wouldn't it have to be something like the warrant didn't cover something they picked up?
flytrapp 05-02-2018, 11:29 PM If I had my guess, the defense wants his DNA thrown out. According to the site they used to find him, it is in the terms and conditions that the DNA uploaded is your personal DNA and no one else's. I'm not a lawyer, but could it be argued that since LE did not upload "their" DNA it should not be entered into evidence as EAR did not give consent, it was his DNA, and therefore LE violated his rights? And if a judge somewhere agrees with the defense would that mean any evidence found as a result of the "fruit from the poison tree" cannot be used?
Any thoughts on this? I think there would be a lot of people absolutely sick if he could walk on some legal technicality as to how the DNA was obtained in the first place....because other than the DNA, let's face it, LE's got nothing.

Cannot see it happening-that might be their site rules, but doubt it would apply to a courtroom-especially when the charges are murder. The police obtained his DNA legally & confirmed it after his arrest, they have broken no laws that I can see. The general legal consensus seems to reflect this.
flytrapp 05-03-2018, 12:44 AM James T, I hope you are right. I can't see why the DNA would be a problem but you never know. If EAR has a problem with how LE obtained the DNA that should be an issue between him and the site that offered up the DNA. Same thing with LE...if the site has a problem with LE getting the DNA by not telling the whole truth as per their disclaimer, oh well, too f'n bad, imo. That's between the site and LE, which shouldn't affect the case. Hopefully.
tsaun 05-03-2018, 06:05 AM Just give him a speedy trial then hang him.

Unless we're talking about that poisoned fruit stuff from all the legal TV shows?
From what I've googled these motions are fairly common in these early stages as a means to try to get the charges thrown out, I'm not going to worry until something goes negatively for the prosecution.

drew790 05-03-2018, 12:33 PM The judge nuked the public defender's motion down, and chided her that she chose the wrong way to challenge the DNA. (I wonder how long before she's replaced with a hired lawyer? If anyone would even want to take that on in the metoo era)
She tried to suppress further DNA and fingerprint collection and taking of photos of him, including photos of his penis.

CrecyWarKnight 05-07-2018, 09:49 AM If JJD pleads "Not Guilty" that really signals he wants a Plea Bargain. He may not fear the Death Penalty here in California as said, but he might fear being locked up 23 hours a day and No Privileges. So a Plea Bargain might look like this: Plead Guilty to Murders/Rape etc and in turn sentence is Life Without Parole + some privileges IF AND ONLY IF he "tells all" and answers ALL questions truthfully and completely. I mean we really need answers- eg, Full disclosure of every single Murder and Rape known and Unknown. Did he have help with any of his crimes? Did anyone known he was the Golden State Killer? It is an interesting angle. Det. Paul Holes is at least open to it (http://www.sacbee.com/latest-news/article210658154.html) because of the experiences some of the rape victims had with EAR (e.g. him seemingly talking to someone else). I'm inclined to believe though that he was toying with the victims.
He was all about self-preservation and adding an accomplice only would have complicated that.

Yeah, with as much respect as possible to Det. Holes, I don't see him working with someone either. So much could have gone wrong, led to capture and talk, and he was too careful for that. I agree he was likely trying to throw the victims off, maybe even try to make it seem like an unrelated perpetrator to the other rapes.
Interesting about the wife. I actually hadn't done much looking into what happened there and just assumed she died or they divorced.

I've seen some Redditors intimate that the wife knows "something". And that there's some sort of nefarious reason that they have been separated since 1991 but remain legally married. And, I'll admit that is made all the more curious because of her career as a divorce attorney (http://www.oxygen.com/crime-time/golden-state-killer-joseph-deangelo-sharon-huddle-divorce) but I'm trying to keep myself from going overboard with what that might imply.
Well in Calif if they divorced without a prenuptial agreement ... She would have to sell her practice and give him half ( or a cash payout ) AND pay him alimony. Thant sucks.

But he could have sued her for divorce and gotten that anyway, if he wanted it.
Something's up there.
flytrapp 05-09-2018, 12:23 AM About the ex-wife, I don't think she would be worried about getting "sued". As a lawyer she can act for herself and tie up things in paperwork for years if she wanted to...he'd be the one with a ton of expenses, not her. I think it's more likely that she knew he was a dark person and probably just wanted to distance herself with the least amount of issues possible. That's what I would do. Who wants to piss off someone who is clearly capable of anything?

No. A judge would see right through delay tactics. Many years ago a divorce in Calif took years to complete. Now it's a lot faster. Why have they not gone for a divorce, she didn't want to pay him half and he wants to stay away from courts and lawyers as much as possible probably fearing someone might recognise his face as similar to one of the many GSK drawings that might be posted somewhere.

It could possibly explain the different sketches of the killer.

Right. Many years ago a divorce in Calif took years to complete. Well, they separated many years ago. She probably just wanted to get away from him, and if neither of them wanted to remarry, there would be no reason to rush anything or force anything, especially if they had children.

I've seen things where people refuse to get divorced, and both are seeing other people, just because one thinks (incorrectly) that they're going to get the house when the other dies.
Like, anything could have happened there. But it's fishy.

I wouldn't put to much stock into that. The sketches were always dubious at best, no one really got a good look at EAR without his mask on, and some of the sketches were just based on suspicious people near the crime scenes who may have been someone else.
Although I will say the one mustache sketch of EAR does look eerily like DeAngelo as a cop. But all in all, the rest only vaguely resemble his young pics I thought if at all.
Given the unreliability of eyewitness testimony, I always believed the DNA was by far the best chance to catch DeAngelo. In fact without it I don't see any way he would have been caught.

I've read that as well. I'm not surprised when there's abuse in the background, Gacy was brutalized by his father as a child and even Manson was sexually assaulted as a young man. I feel sorry for DeAngelo's sister, and have sympathy for the child that he was for being forced to witness that, none for the adult that he became. Undoubtedly the assault and the domestic abuse contributed towards shaping his character, but he made the repeated choice to inflict that same terror on women and their children.

Of course. At least we can put a giant "solved" in front of those sketches now. Those sketches don't matter anymore. We know that EAR is DeAngelo and it might be a game changer in terms of solving unsolved serial killer murders.

CrecyWarKnight 05-29-2018, 10:26 AM He must plead Not Guilty if he wants to avoid the Death Penalty. We want him to plead Not Guilty. Why? because we hope he wants a Plea Bargain. If he goes to trial he loses and gets the worst sentence we can give-Death row in harish settings which could take the rest of his life. IF he takes a Plea Bargain he could avoid the Death penalty in perhaps not so harsh settings for Life Without Parole. BUT he MUsT Plead Guilty to ALL 12 Murders ALL Rapes and must answer ALL questions to our satisfaction. We need that INFORMATION. Did he have help?, Where is all the evidence?, How did he get away?, Did anyone know he was the GSK? Are there any other victims?...we must get those answers. LATimes – DNA lifted from Golden State Killer suspect at Hobby Lobby parking lot key to cracking case, documents show (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-golden-state-killer-deangelo-warrant-20180601-story.html)
The four-decade hunt for the Golden State Killer reached a turning point in April when detectives lifted the DNA of their suspect from his car door as he shopped inside Hobby Lobby, court documents released Friday show.
The secret collection occurred in April in a public parking lot in Roseville, just outside Sacramento. By then, authorities already considered Joseph DeAngelo a suspect.
But authorities said in the court records that the definitive link came when the DNA taken from the car matched that of semen recovered at the scene of one of the Golden State Killer’s rape cases.
Judge Michael Sweet released the documents Friday after rejecting objections from DeAngelo’s defense team as well as prosecutors. An attorney representing the Los Angeles Times and other media outlets had filed a motion to have the warrants unsealed for the public record.

So happy the Claude Snelling murder was pinned on EAR/ONS/GSK. I'll admit I had my doubts over the years whether or not the Visalia Ransacker crimes were tied to EAR-ONS but as more things have come to light in recent years, it became apparent that the cases were all linked.
Every time there's a real news related update to this case I get goosebumps. I'm still rather gobsmacked that the case has been solved and we have a face and a name. I cannot even begin to image what those families all feel.
This is going to be a long, long prosecution.

XCalibur 02-23-2019, 12:08 AM I wonder how long DeAngelo is going to put on this frail, confused old man act? Does he really think he is going to beat this?
He has to know deep down he is toast. As if the DNA wasn't enough, Apparently the timing of all EAR/ONS crimes coincide perfectly with what areas he was in at the time.
I'm curious if he eventually will clear the air and admit it.
Also, his family's silence on the issue is interesting, particularly Sharon Huddle his wife. Makes you wonder if she ever suspected him and feels bad for never coming forward. DeAngelo had to be gone from home a lot of nights during the time these crimes were committed, she had to at least wonder why. She has not granted any interviews or anything, I'm curious what her story is. DeAngelo's children would have been to young to remember this time, but she obviously would not. By most accounts, it sounds like they had a rather turbulent marriage, and that DeAngelo may not have gotten over the Bonnie women he was engaged to before.
Hopefully a lot more questions will be answered once the DeAngelo family starts talking.

He has virtually no leverage whatsoever. They have all the evidence they need to put him away for life, or to the chair. He's toast. He will take anything he can get. He might eventually start talking if nothing else to get attention. These guys are egomaniacs.
As for his wife, just cause she is a lawyer doesn't mean anything. She could get well be subpoenaed.

Mr Deangelo will spend the rest of his life in prison, he knows it. Question is will he get the Death penalty that he deserves. Thing is we need him to talk or we don't get our questions answered...Were there other victims? How did he commit each crime and where is the evidence? Did anyone else help him or know what he was up to? We don't get those answers unless he takes a plea bargain. He's not gonna get the chair anyway so might as well give him "something" so we can learn more. Again, the wife does not have to talk. Recall there is such a thing as "taking the 5th". Depends on her. maybe she is sympathetic to the victims and tells all, who knows?

CrecyWarKnight 02-25-2019, 05:29 PM Didn't Dennis Rader began talking about his killings when they removed the death penalty? I think you're correct on that. Many take a plea bargain. I just wish they let him into general population, he wouldn't last 10 mins. I hate that guy. And I believe Ted Bundy - the idiot wanna be lawyer who defended himself - tried to delay his Florida execution by giving more info on his victims. If he would have let his lawyer take control of the case he would be alive today probably with a plea bargain.
XCalibur 02-25-2019, 10:42 PM Something else is weird, when you think about it even though DeAngelo's last known murder was 1986, actually there was a five year gap between his next to last murder between 1981 and 1986. So DeAngelo stopped for five years then committed the Janelle Cruz
murder. If he decided to stop in '81 why cone back for one last one?
What if DeAngelo was jealous of Richard Ramirez, who actually came to be known as the night stalker? Ramirez is the reason he is called the original night stalker.
Serial killers I've heard are sometimes jealous if they feel another is stealing their thunder, so to speak.
Think about it though, Richard Ramirez's murder spree was in 1984-1985, during DeAngelo's first retirement. What if Ramirez's spree inspired him to kill Janelle Cruz to remind everyone he was still out there?
Just a thought.

I don't think so. I went looking for the article that referenced the killer of Domingo/Sanchez as the 'Night Stalker'. It was published in either 1981 or 1982; but I cannot find it.
It wasn't really a common moniker used for EAR/ONS at the time, to my knowledge.
I think the 5-year gap is because of a few of things...
1) Greg Sanchez fought back, probably scared DeAngelo to death.
2) DeAngelo's first daughter was born in 1981.
3) He was now in his mid 30s.
Somehow, somewhere, he saw Janelle Cruz. Either referenced in the LA Times article (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-03-20-vw-21796-story.html) or he saw her in her neighborhood. I'm unsure if the DeAngelo residence in Los Angeles was near Irvine or what... no one knows honestly. No one knows how he chose any of the victims.
I think it was just happenstance, he saw her somewhere out and about and... you know the rest. Cruz was one of the more violent deaths in the series too, and I think DeAngelo was just about to turn 40 years old at the time.
flytrapp 02-24-2020, 12:04 PM EAR's first child was born in 1981 and another was born in 1986. I cannot find out if there was a birth in between (as he has 3 daughters). My best guess (about Janelle Cruz) is that he was pretty much in retirement and he saw her somewhere, and something about her ignited some sort of sick spark within him.
It's been noted that the way Janelle was murdered was by far the harshest of any of the other murders. If I had to guess, I think it was because EAR thought he was done until Janelle as it had been 5 years....and the reason he murdered her so brutally was because he couldn't believe she made him do this again. It was her fault for making him do this again after resisting for 5 whole years. In his twisted brain, she made him do it and she had to pay. That'd be my best guess.

MadGoblin 06-30-2020, 09:28 AM Unfortunately we’ll be unlikely to ever learn the hows and whys surrounding his reign of terror. I’ve never understood why as part of a plea bargain defendants aren’t always required to spill everything. Locally we had a case where during the allocution the father of the murder victim wanted to know why the killer murdered his daughter and the judge told him “that’s not what we’re here for.” I don’t get it.

They split around 1991, and she wanted to stay on his health insurance.
I read somewhere that the house went into a trust for the kids in 1993, so I suspect that was part of a separation agreement - he got the benefit of the house for life but it was secured for the kids, other assets would have been dealt with as well.
We might yet learn some interesting tidbits.
This article was published in the Los Angeles Times last Sunday: An inside look at the Golden State Killer suspect’s behavior (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-06-28/closing-the-golden-state-killer-case-with-a-pending-confession-circus-atmosphere-and-a-bar-of-gold). I followed them all week. I loved them. Very powerful. It was just so disturbing watching EAR/ONS sit there with a face mask on, detached as ever, no remorse. It is unfortunate this couldn't take place in a packed courtroom but at least live-streaming was well in-depth. Also, I really thought the judge was great.
The victim impact statement that was the hardest to listen to was from the family of a victim who was raped and later died of cancer in 2016—2 years before the case was solved. Her sister said in the sentencing:
“I hold you, JJD — it’s hard to even say your name — responsible for my sister’s untimely death. Debbie died of esophageal cancer, in the center for your throat, your chest, where you stifle your voice and hold deep, dark worries.”
It's great this case was solved as I thought the chances were pretty low—even when I saw it profiled in 2002. If anyone feels like catching up, I have compiled the live-stream recordings below.
