Valerie/Valerie's Family/The Hogans/The Hogan Family is finally back on the air! It hasn't aired since it left ABC Family in October 2006! Most episodes from Season 4, 5 and 6 haven't aired anywhere since they aired on PAX back in 2000.

Thus far, I have watched all 5 episodes Antenna TV has aired:

Season 6's Ho Ho Hogans on Christmas Day

Tonights Airings of:
Season 1's Sick House
Season 2's Of Human Blondage and Caught on a Hot Tin Roof
Season 4's Animal House

Here are six observations and thoughts:

1. YAY! This is my favorite family sitcom of the 80s and I am so glad it's back on.

2. The Valerie title is intact and the opening credits are unedited and they are full length. Syndication/ABC Family and PAX edited the opening credits down. So this is refreshing and gives me hope that the openings for Season 3 (Valerie's Family season) will be in tact.

3. The episodes seem to be unedited. I am seeing new scenes that I have never seen before and in recording these, the episodes seem to run about 23-24 minutes. Ho Ho Hogans was only 22 minutes, full theme in tact but scenes most likely cut.

4. Yes, the credit crunching is annoying! I hate it when one episode goes off while another episode is coming on. However, the four episodes that aired in prime time tonight, had the opening credits uncrunched and just the closing had Antenna TV ads running over the closing credits. I fear in it's weekday timeslot, we will have credit crunch city!

5. Ho Ho Hogans had the original CBS Surround Sound banner!! Is there hope that we could see the NBC In Stereo Where Available?

6. Despite the credit crunch! I feel Antenna TV is doing well so far. I am glad it's back on and am enjoying seeing scenes that haven't been seen since they originally aired.

I don't get Antenna. I hope someone is recording a full cycle of these for sale/trade later.

I’m pleasantly surprised to hear this, because Antenna really butchers some of its shows, like All in the Family.

Also nice to see them use the original title, Valerie, for those episodes. I feel like the Hogan Family is a different show than Valerie, in terms of tone.

Logo does much worse by All in the Family when they air it. Long commercial breaks and over 7 minutes cut out of each episode! Antenna at least airs the clean edited versions where you can't tell if anything is missing.

Not only that, but it seems ALL Viacom channels cut scenes and has extra long commercials.

I have to disagree about AITF. Antenna will air episodes where they start the show in the middle of the first scene! I guess I know the show really well, because I can tell there is a lot missing.

We’ll see if GetTV is any better starting this week.

Hopefully if the show does well, it will make a studio consider releasing it on DVD. One Day at a Time went from being off the air for decades to coming back to TV (Antenna TV and Logo) with a reboot following later on as well as a complete series DVD release in December of last year.

I am hoping that Antenna TV stops credit crunching so much this year.If they do, I hope that they at least leave the opening credits in tact because I think most of us have learned to live without the ending credits of shows considering how networks air shows these days.

I've been checking out the reruns and it's still a very good show. I have a feeling I'll like the 'Sandy Duncan episodes' a bit less though! It will still probaly be better than the 'Growing Pains' and 'Head Of The Class' reruns I've been watching. Those show' should don't hold up as well to me. Though Head Of The Class did get better when Rain Pryor joined the show.

The episodes appear slightly edited. The runtime is almost always 22 minutes and change. If Antenna did not credit crunch, the episodes would probably run an additional 2 minutes longer since both the opening and closing credits are about a minute or so long.

I keep recycling the same season 1 intro from the holiday marathon so at least of my season 1 recordings will have the complete intro without the annoying credit crunch. They aired a season 2 episode in that marathon as well so all of my season 2 episodes should have complete uninterrupted intros as well.

I also love that Antenna TV is airing the complete intro (regardless of credit crunching). In syndication, the shorter intro is notoriously used (ABC Family, PAX TV)

I like this show after discovering it on Antenna TV. It's a good show. Even though it is disappointing that Antenna credit crunches, at least the shows sound like they're uncut for this one complete with complete intro. Maybe if it does well Warner Archive will release it or license it out to Shout! Factory.

I'm loving watching this show too! And I really love that they're using the original "Valerie" title where it should be. :)

I wasn't as big on HotC in the last season. I really enjoy the first 3 or 4 seasons though, and find it still a really fun nostalgic trip back. I think it holds up just fine, largely because I find it so interesting watching the different individualized personalities of (most of) the kids interacting with each other and Mr. Moore. Now, GP, I can't get back into (I tried, but couldn't get past a few episodes).

I was really very surprised to see that they were using Valerie as the show's title. I wonder if this was a mistake? Part of the details of the outcome of the lawsuit involving Valerie Harper being wrongfully fired from the show, was that they could no longer use her name for the show's title. The lawsuit was settled in Harper's favor.

I still wonder if the usage of the title "Valerie" during this run of the series was done in error by using the wrong prints?

This was my favorite show by this team of producers. I plan on watching all of the episodes again.

Yes, but they could no longer use it for the show after the show was going on without her and she and her husband/producer made a big thing about it (I'm not blaming/criticizing them, just events). Since she is starring in these first two seasons it's only right that they keep the "Valerie" title since Valerie is in the episodes.

Actually, I'm more surprised they were able to call her seasons "The Hogan Family" in syndication since that wasn't the show's name until later. This is just a very, very odd case of a show with the cast changes and all the title changes.

Before it became The Hogan Family it was renamed Valerie's Family. I wonder if they'll have those credits.

The syndicator can call the early episodes The Hogan Family if they want - they own the show and the title. They did remove “Valerie” from the title at the end of season 3 because Harper was making noise in the press about legal action, and the producers didn’t want to deal with it. They also just wanted to move on.

When the show went into syndication, they used a shortened version of the theme, with “Hogan Family” used for all the episodes. Antenna TV is using the full version of the theme, and Warner Bros never created a full version of the opening from seasons 1 and 2 with the “Hogan Family” title.

For season 3, full versions of the opening exist with both the “Valerie’s Family” and “The Hogan Family” titles: NBC renamed the show from “Valerie’s Family” to “The Hogan Family” for summer reruns at the conclusion of the 1987-88 season, and used the full theme. My guess is that Antenna will use the “Hogan Family” prints for season 3, rather than “Valerie’s Family”. But we’ll see.

Oh, I really hope they use "Valerie's Family". I want to see all of the titles:

Valerie
Valerie's Family
Valerie's Family: The Hogans
The Hogans
The Hogan Family

From Wikipedia:

"When the 1987–88 season premiere aired, the show was retitled Valerie's Family: The Hogans, or simply Valerie's Family. "

"During the show's third season (Duncan's first as the show's star), the series was known as Valerie's Family, The Hogans, and finally as The Hogan Family."

TV Guy

I think Wikipedia is misleading. When the show was titled “Valerie’s Family”, it was always followed by the subtitle “The Hogans”. And when the name changed again, it was “The Hogan Family” - never just “The Hogans”.

So the show had three different onscreen titles

Valerie

Valerie’s Family (that title would appear over a scene of the family playing baseball, followed by a scene of the family walking through the park on their way to a picnic, with the subtitle “The Hogans” superimposed. Even then they knew that Valerie’s Family was an interim title, and were getting viewers used to “Hogan” in the title).

The Hogan Family.

Wow! There is a lot of great and interesting information on here!

Over the years I've wished to find other fans to get together with and be able to set up a watching party and spend the day watching all of my VHS tapes. Unfortunately, everyone seems to live in other parts of the country, so that hasn't been possible.

Anyhow, reading everyone's comments has made me want to dig out my old tapes and watch them. I haven't yet, but I sure am inspired.

I've only caught a couple episodes so far on Antenna TV. However, I think my all-time favorite was when David got the blame for the damaged family car that Willie wrecked while taking it for a joyride.

Because of work I've only been able to catch the weekend airings, in fact during the late 80's I was out of the country so I never knew of this show until years later and in fact I should probably be thankful because it's just typical family fluff.

And then I realize it's produced by the familiar Miller-Boyett duo famously known for junk like Full House and Family Matters.

Actually it's not like their typical shows. It's not really like any other show in its family dynamics, which makes it unique. Some of the parenting on here gets really intense, lol.

I noticed the same thing when I was watching this past week in particular. (even though I had seen this episode and the show itself many times, but many years ago.) Especially in the episode where Willie drives the family car. It was intense and had bits of serious drama compared to their other shows. I liked this series the best, of the ones that they produced. Too bad that Valerie Harper was not with the full run of the show.

Once Valerie Harper left, the show became much more generic, and more similar to the other Miller Boyett shows. She had been fighting creative battles against this and it’s one of the main reasons the producers fired her.

OH Nuts!
01-27-2018, 08:53 AM
Actually, one of the things I like about threads is how they twist and turn and everyones been discussing Valerie (Harper) and The Hogan Family for a while now. Shame I never got around to watching the show, at least in its beginning, as I love Valerie Harper. Funny, but she’ll always be Rhoda to me.

But regarding Antenna in general, I just love the channel. Yes, it has its imperfections the chief one being chopped episodes. When you’re a REAL FAN of a show, know most of the eps by heart, and you see an ep where a scene or two is missing, it can’t help but annoy you. That being said, it’s hard for me to b**ch about any channel that’s FREE. Also I got to see shows that I thought would never see the light of day again like Bachelor Father, Adam 12 and My Mother The Car. And, let’s face it, for a first time viewer, even a chopped ep is far better than no ep at all.

Right? He was sitting there in that chair with tears streaming down his face and the episode just ended. It was also interesting to hear a TV character actually deride TV, which made that part funny in an ironic way, lol. Even earlier in the episode, she was encouraging the kids to get away from the TV and to get outside for that "new invention; it's called sunshine", lol.

That's a shame all the way around. The silver lining though is that that is all water under the bridge. If you watch Valerie's interview at the Emmy TV Legends web site, she talks about how she has made up with the people involved with that years ago (Miller, Boyett, etc.) and she still loves them. So that's good to hear. :)

As far as Rhoda, to me her Rhoda will always be the MTM Rhoda. I tried watching the series Rhoda but it just wasn't the same for me; to me, the essence of Rhoda is not having it all together, not having a man, etc.

The Hogan Family isn't edited on Antenna. And neither are some of the other shows like Head of the Class, Wings, Murphy Brown, My Two Dads, etc. I think Silver Spoons is edited, but if it is, it's very clean editing. Antenna's a wonderful channel.

Yesterday, Antenna TV began airing Season 3 and I was looking to see if the original Season 3 Valerie's Family opening would be included. The full length version of the theme is being used however, the Valerie's Family title was removed and replaced with The Hogan Family title. I will be watching closely to see if any episodes from Season 3 slip through with the original title.

So far, I feel Antenna TV has been treating the show pretty well!!

Just an update, Antenna TV has now begun airing the late Season 3-Season 6 episodes. These episodes haven't aired in the US since the PAX days back in 1998-2000 time period.

When The Hogan Family aired on ABC Family in 2006, they got up to Season 3's Help Wanted before pulling it from the schedule. This past Friday, they aired the penultimate Season 3 episode, 48 Hours. I am really looking forward to seeing some of these Season 4 episodes!

Agreed. I just never fully appreciated his timing.

I was always surprised of the resurgence of Bateman during the 2000's in part because I always believed it was just pure "magic" born from either nostalgia or just plain dumb luck.

Turns out I was wrong on both accounts and the guy has real talent.

In retrospect, it seems odd he surfaced in just supporting roles in television during the 1990's.

My take: Very happy overall with Antenna TV's handling of this show. I can live with the "credit crunching." At least the episodes themselves seem to be unedited. I can also live with the new 2am time slot (hey, that's what DVR's are for). My only real complaint so far is this: THEY SKIPPED OVER AN EPISODE!!!
:(

Why oh why did they not show S5 Ep12 "Sandy In Love?" It's the only one they have skipped over so far! My DVR is set up to record every one (repeat or not), so I know they didn't show it.

They did air it sometime later, it's on my Plex DVR. Slowly but surely I'm recording the episodes, about halfway there now for the Hogan Family and Head of the Class. Working on removing the commercials from them too, happy with the results I'm getting. I believe I'll have the highest quality (bought the bootleg set for the Hogan Family but haven't watched it yet) episodes out there for both shows. Just hope they air all the episodes so I can get them all for both shows after the new year. Kinda worried about that.

I just recently finished my set of the show. I had some time off for the holiday and recorded them all to DVD without commercials. The sets we are making are better than any bootleg out there. Unless I missed something all of the known bootlegs out there are poorly captured downloads from YouTube.

Such a shame this show has never been released to DVD or at least put on a streaming site. Most of Warner Bros programming is either available on line, on demand ($1.99 per episode) or made into a MOD release already.
