Hi everyone,

I've been collecting workprints since 2007. The first workprint I got was Apocalypse Now and since then I've gotten a big collection. I'm looking for the workprints that were floating around in trading circles back in the 1990's. A lot of those workprints are long gone along with the old traders who have either retired from the scene or had their collection taken away by the MPAA. I'm sure there are people out there who may still have what's missing.

I don't have any of those, but I would be curious in seeing what you have for trade.

I collect VHS and I had a workprint of SPY KIDS one time.... It was neat seeing junees sister fly over a map!! (Instead of the city they had there in the final movie)

I think I also have a workprint of CONVERGENCE (1999) it has a counter on the screen all thru it..... For the first 20 mins they were transferring in SLP mode and then they switched to SP (Which was even better of course)

I never heard of a Spy Kids workprint floating around. It's probably still out there.

Spy Kids was only a rumored to exist workprint.

The one I had was recorded in SLP mode and not very good video.. (Especially if ya tried to copy to another tape)

The audio was goregous though,best I have ever heard that movie!!

There's a bunch of workprints you just don't see anymore. I can imagine that's where many came from.

I have pretty much everything everyone else does and probably a bit more. I don't trade much these days. All the workprint collectors have the same stuff.

I wonder if I could find those old usenet posts and see if those people are still active and want to trade.

If possible, could you send me your list? I was speaking to a guy who said he has a workprint of The Fast and the Furious but refused to share. I've been trying to get into contact with this guy here, he has a ton of stuff I'm looking for but his email no longer works.

He has the Crash 1996 workprint and Holy Man workprint along with a few others not seen in the trading circuit that I've been looking for.

That site is like the holy grail. I’m pretty sure that guy used to use the handle Voogoo or Brother Voogoo. I had an email address for him but he never writes back. I think he’s out of the game, honestly.

Yeah most of us have the same stuff. Which is why I branched out in the last two years to more than just workprints and TV Versions. I don't even really collect workprints anymore.

Yeah that guy doesn't trade anymore. If it is indeed Voogoo that is. Just like some other prominent traders stopped trading. Even the workprint collection guy doesn't really trade anymore.

I just did some scanning for ya Jeff and see if I could find any Workprints....... Ya just want them on VHS or is DVD ok also??

I'm leery of sending the disc because if it gets lost in the mail or something then I have literally no copy. Personally, I don't think it is fixable. I tried using one of those scratch removers and it literally rubbed a visible transparent hole in the disc. You can actually see through it.

I don't really trade much anymore. However, I find what you are trying to do here interesting. Send me a PM and I'll send you some information.

I have no idea, but the unsubbed Hong Kong laser disc to DVDR transfer is (or at least was) the best option for Song of the South. Not sure if a better copy has materialized since.

Well there's 4 different copies of that circulating currently. So far the best I seen was a rare BBC broadcast of it. The 16 mm is still rough and needs additional cleaning up. The VHS transfer is ok but still not the best. The LD was damn near DVD looking from the original dual layer DVD 9 DVDR.

Hoping everyone had a good holiday. One of my goals for 2018 is to be able to track down these hard to find workprints and help people add to their collections. These workprints were around and circulating way back in the day and what I find funny is now they're hard to find. It gets annoying dealing with people who have rare stuff but refuse to trade. My goal is to help people out add to their collections and maybe unearth whatever rarity that was once out there to be found again. I mean hey, if a Scooby-Doo workprint can be found then surely, stuff like Holy Man & Crash can be found.

I think part of the problem is that many of these workprints were available as bootlegs at the time these movies were released and playing in theaters. Therefore, once a legitimate release was issued on VHS/DVD/etc. the workprint copies (which were usually terrible quality and often incomplete and had counters, property stamps, etc.) were no longer necessary and folks dumped them. Granted, some workprints had substantial differences from the theatrical release, and many of those have survived and are still being traded to this day. Or some movies have cult followings and the workprints are traded and lauded for the fact that they are so different.

Halloween 6 Producers Cut was a prime example of a cult following. Just as you mentioned it was vastly different throughout the whole flick.

They are hard to get a hold of,LIKE DEMOs..... Most were ruined and didnt make it out to the publics hands,its amazing as many of them did!! (They kept tight hands on them usually)

Considering the audience for "workprints" is very narrow in scope (primarily folks directly involved in the actual film making process) and that they are not intended for public distribution and consumption, I am going to hazard a guess that the answer to your question is no.

You'd be amazed at the **** I find on the archives. Some of the stories are downright hilarious. There was a guy who went by the name of Ebola The Soul Collector and reading his stuff from back into 1996. He was one of many that got busted by the MPAA and was warning other traders. He thought several traders on the board were conspiring to kill him or something. It was ridiculous and reading his stuff was a waste of time. I honestly think I’m dumber today for having read so many of his posts.

I read something about a workprint of Batman that supposedly had extra scenes of the Joker robbing a liquor store. I never was sure how this was supposed to fit into the movie or where this story came from.

I would imagine some of those workprints were identical to the theatrical releases. Still might be worthwhile to collect if they had timecodes, property stamps etc.

I dealt with Evans a time or two. He had several aliases. I think one was D. Swinton. He had an awesome list.

He did. I seen a bunch of his lists he had the Blade workprint. I take it he's out of the game or one of many that got busted by the MPAA.

Anyone ever deal with a guy named Hegemonic, one of many traders back in 1998 that had a copy of the Apt Pupil Workprint. Last I read that he disabled his site to the busts. Even looking it up on Archive Wayback doesn't have it archived.

I'm guessing that is not the trader's site.

Back in the 90s, GeoCities had fixed URLs. If someone abandoned their page or it got deleted for TOS violations, the URL would become "available" for the next person who signed up. So, someone entirely different could create a site at the exact same URL.

My guess is the trader's site existed at that URL back in the 90s, got deleted, and then this person moved in.

EDIT: Just looked at the site a little more deeply. It looks like the author is the same "Hegemonic" but there is no mention of tape trading anywhere on this site. Yet, you could download his resume and also headshots. My guess is he got busted or lost interest in trading and took down the trading portion of his site.

The American Beauty workprint was listed on one of those VCD bootleg sites up until maybe 5 years ago. The link is dead now and not archived, unfortunately. The site itself hadn't been updated since probably 2000 or so.

This one took almost a year to fix but from what I was told via private source, it's almost finshed. Got to check out a 30 minute sample, it's bad quality with a timer on top of the screen but was told it runs approx 6 minutes longer then theatrical. There are instances of static which was to replace the foreign audio.

I have one with the timer on screen also but it doesnt affect the movie :)

Its aggravating though when they change speeds during the movie as they did in this one (Premonition)

I've never seen it but I do have a soft spot for 90s horror especially direct to video stuff. Part of the reason why I'm a film collector.

Here are the differences between workprint and screener.

Screener: Pre-sales VHS cassette, which is distributed by the studio to various companies as promotional material (or perhaps to members of the Oscar Jury). The screener is always on a VHS cassette, and usually has a 4: 3 (full screen) a / r format. However, widescreen screens can also be found. The main cognitive feature of the screener is the "ticker" (the inscription that runs below the image and which reports a copy prohibition message and a telephone number). In order to get to know such a copy, the picture is in some parts black and white. Sometimes it is only a while, but mostly the black and white part is very long. Depending on the ripping device used, the quality is also perfect, it can be perfect, made on a MASTER copy machine, or very bad when RIP is made from video to computer using cheap components. Most VHS screens are reworked to VCD (VideoCD). Some were even made into SVCD (SuperVideoCD)

Workprint: It's a copy of a movie that's not finished. Scenes may be missing, music and quality can be perfect to terrible. Some WPs can be quite different than the final film

I used to collect screeners back in the early 2000's. Had a ton of them on vcd/svcds. I just threw out all those discs in a move a couple of years ago, figured no wanted them lol. Did the same thing with movies/tv recorded off TV awhile back. Didn't know people collected tv edited movies and shows with commericals until after the fact lol

Treating this as a possible update. Was in contact with a private source, and may have found the Armageddon workprint. I shall find out more in a week or 2.

If I change this message to "Just added" it means I have a copy, if I delete this it means its no good.
