View Full Version : Valerie and ODAAT renewed interest...
RetroTVNitekatt 12-02-2017, 02:15 PM There's been renewed interesting in ODAAT, first with LOGO and now the DVD set
But Her lack of involvement in new extras for the DVD set is perplexing
Then she's yet to make a cameo on the "new" series (Mac has done one and Mike directed an episode - and he took time out of producing/directing the last season of "Baby Daddy" to do it!) Yes, she's done the odd congratulations to the new show tweet.
Her lack of any comment about not being involved in the new box set, or even a mention of it on her facebook or twitter....
Do we need to new hashtag...
#WolfiesmomGotUsODAATfansWondering?
(Also worth mentioning no comment on Della Reese's passing either on facebook or twitter either...)
Is she SO busy with her book, tour,QVC and Her new seasons of her cooking show she has no time...
AngieTribeca 12-02-2017, 03:08 PM The fascination started with Antenna TV because everyone keeps comparing their broadcasts to the butchered ones that Logo airs.
1960'sTVfan 12-02-2017, 03:21 PM Could be possible that Valerie would rather no longer be associated with her old show from 40 years ago. She's obviously busy with other things now and involved with other projects, maybe she prefers to leave One Day At A Time behind and in the past.

But it launched her career ! Made her famous! And it's a good role, nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone loved her as Barbara Cooper! :) ;)

Fake news.
Go back and check the Nov.20 tweets (l don't know how to link tweets).
Could be possible that Valerie would rather no longer be associated with her old show from 40 years ago. She's obviously busy with other things now and involved with other projects, maybe she prefers to leave One Day At A Time behind and in the past.
A recent tweet involved a conversation with Mark Hamill when he guested on ODAAT, and she recently answered a Retrokatt question about the show. So I don't think that's it.
1960'sTVfan 12-02-2017, 03:57 PM But it launched her career ! Made her famous! And it's a good role, nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone loved her as Barbara Cooper! :) ;)
Nothing to be ashamed of is correct, I imagine Val appreciates those who still enjoy the show but it was 40 years ago, she's busy doing other things now and her lack of involvement in the ODAAT DVD set extra features could indicate she didn't want to be involved or maybe she just didn't have the time.
RetroTVNitekatt 12-02-2017, 08:46 PM It does looks more likely based on facts that Valerie is just so busy with her little "empire" it seems to be logistics more than anything else....
Svenfan1234 12-04-2017, 08:05 AM The fascination started with Antenna TV because everyone keeps comparing their broadcasts to the butchered ones that Logo airs.
Yeah, Antenna aired it first THEN Logo insanely butchered it. Not the other way around.

Norman Lear was honored at The Kennedy Center last night and Mack showed up but I am not sure about Valerie attending. I hope she made the time to pay tribute to the man who launched her career but she has overpriced pies and spaghetti to hawk. :D Who knows why she is so mum on plugging the set, she seems to want to distance herself from her old throng. Is she jealous that Mack got a part on the reboot and maybe she wasn't offered anything. That theory is unlikely but I just thought I would it throw it out there ;)
I ordered the complete boxed set last night and got a good deal on it. I hope I don't get stiffed. One time I ordered something from there and never received it but I am taking my chances. Here is the link for those who are considering it.
Proceed with caution.

I wonder how much time it would take her to do a little interview though? Mack works as a full time drug counselor and still acts and she managed to find some time to honor the show.
Here she is honoring Norman Lear last night.

Hi Anna . How are you? :)
That is a good deal! I ordered mine from Wal*Mart, but I have a feeling I won't receive mine either? I called my credit card company for my balance and they don't have any record of this purchase? And I accidentally erased my confirmation Email! :( Lately I have had SO MUCH bad luck. Not to get personal here, but I'm not doing too great lately! :(

I guess it's just busy. Maybe there's more, but the whole Mac/Glenn interview announcement and the three month gap to release date did coincide with a huge prearranged tour for the new cookbook release. It really doesn't feel like there's resentment toward the show, so till new info comes out I'll accept that time was the reason. (It's like if your current husband needs you and your ex husband needs you at the same time. You're probably helping the current hubby).
Has Michael returned to acting in the new series yet?

I hear what you are saying but how hard would it be for someone to plunk a camera in front of her for 10 minutes whilst she talks about her costars or a few of her favorite episodes? Is she that busy? She could have thrown her first husband a bone. ;) How hard is it to make a trip to Peter Marshall's house and hang out with her old pals for a day? I am sure they would have made every effort to work around her schedule.
Even in her bio she gave the show short shrift, not a mention of her TV husband or anything about her character or her story lines as far as I can remember. I never read Mack's book so I don't know what she said about the show but I know Bonnie wrote that she raved about Lem being such a mensch. Mack is promoting a show that fired her TWICE and wrote her character out in a disgraceful way due to her real life addiction. She of all of them would have the right to distance herself from the show but she is nothing but publicly grateful for the opportunities it afforded her. Glenn's character was written out in a few lines by Dr. Johnny Fever and HE stepped up to the plate. What is her deal? No offense but I call B.S. to this excuse of her just being busy. Give me a break, Val.
Rant over. :)
Kasey 12-04-2017, 02:11 PM Be wary of those cheap Shout Factory series sets on eBay. There have been sellers peddling Shout Bootlegs there for years now, dating back to when The Jeffersons and Maude were released. They look like the real deal but there is no booklet and the discs are cheap and compressed.

Yes, I saw this too but it said I had to sign up for PayPal and do a credit check so I thought I would just cough up the extra 13 bucks and save myself the trouble.
I may still get a lemon with the deal I got but the seller had a good rating so I rolled the dice.

Yes I agree, I usually avoid ebay sellers that appear to be new and have a low number of feedbacks. They will list items at a very low price to entice buyers. Some of these sellers are scammers.
I ordered my ODAAT set on ebay from the seller named "thinkingdvd". They are a well established seller, over 650,000 feedbacks and 100% positive. I've ordered from them in the past and haven't had a problem. I paid $73 for the DVD set, shipping is free which I figured is a pretty good deal since other sellers are asking over $100 for the set.

I'm still going with the logistics thing - she's so busy with her current ventures we don't hear anything regarding her past work (any of it) other than an odd peep, tweet or throwback Thursday pix.
I would like to think she gave Mr.Lear congratulations via private contact.
I think we're just reading too much into every little thing Val doesn't apparently do :) The gal had been so busy the last few months. Let's hope when she gets a break she and Tom get to have a nice little vacation. I mean it's like she's been non-stop since the spring. We know how much hard work, time and care she puts into her cooking show- and she does blocks of 13 at a time and had been signed up for at least two more "Seasons", the quality of her book and she's been making the QVC and public appearances...
...and Val had said more than once in interviews over the last year she wouldn't mind doing another sitcom, either - but where in the world would she fit it in :)
I also think SHOUT! had a tight budget and time-frame (They did rush the set if you think about it) for extras so that could be part of the logistics issues - think about how Fast it went from announcement to release - it was a shorter window that you usually see - rushing for the holiday season. (It does look like the window for producing the extras did overlapped with Val working on her current season and the run up to the book release)
Yes, there may be other "business" (70's and current) issues related to ODAAT we're not privy to that might also factor into the logistics.
The set doesn't even go into wide release till the 5th - while I don't expect her to "plug" the set on Twitter/Facebook directly, I wouldn't be surprised if she does mention something or other about the series itself once the renewed interest builds up again. But then she does from time to time mention something or other from her past series, etc. So that wouldn't be out of the question.
But I doubt there is anything sinister or what have you with her "non-involvement" with "new" extras ,etc. Just Logistics.

Poor overworked Val. My heart bleeds for her. We are talking about ONE day of her time. C'mon! She didn't have ONE free day available? She has plenty of time to hawk her wares. They could have come to her studio and did an interview about where she is today and how much the show meant to her.
I don't think it is anything sinister going on either. But you created a thread that invited speculation on the matter and I gave my two cents and then some.
You made some excellent points as usual. There are things we are not privy to. All we can do is speculate.

I don't think it is anything sinister going on either. But you created a thread that invited speculation on the matter and I gave my two cents and then some.
You made some excellent points as usual. There are things we are not privy to. All we can do is speculate.
Keep in mind it can't be just seen as just Val's availability, but SHOUT! production side of things as well - It clearly does look as simple as logistics.
As I've said, they rushed the production on this set for a holiday release - something of this size and importance to classic TV should have taken a little bit longer. I'm not saying they took shortcuts, but Sony did make a fresh set of uncut transfers within the last year for LOGO to use as the source for their "broadcast length versions".
There's other extras that could have been sourced as well - CBS era promos (There's that first season one that is on YouTube, a master has to exist someplace),Pat winning his Emmy award ("Mary Tyler Moore" Show used several Emmy Clips in season one and two),etc. Not even any commentary material with the cast they could get.
Once again Norman Lear's biggest non-remake, non-spin-off gets the short end of the stick.
Well, could be worse - VEI released "Angie" and only 7 of the 36 episodes were uncut (Struck up for TV Land in the 1990's) and the rest were the edited 1985 ABC Daytime prints! (and Robert Hayes isn't even on the box cover!) VEI's releases tend to be off-the-shelf transfers as a flip side to SHOUT! actually putting work into getting uncut prints.
With the 3rd party companies, it's hit or miss.

LOGO aired butchered 19-minute episodes of ODAAT, but as of now they've lost the rights to air it. I mean, Antenna only could get a few cycles out of it -- LOGO likely had the same agreement, but thought it would be "fun" to squeeze 7 cycles into 8 months. Just my two cents.:) and the 19 mins is if you take the theme out, you actually only get 19-19 1/2 episode content. Not worth it IMO. They were likely made for Shout, not Logo exclusively, though. Logo is the worst TV channel ever.
But thankfully, Shout released uncut, remastered episodes of One Day and it's off Logo forever...that's what's important:)
Babalu 12-04-2017, 08:41 PM Norman Lear was honored at The Kennedy Center last night and Mack showed up but I am not sure about Valerie attending. I hope she made the time to pay tribute to the man who launched her career but she has overpriced pies and spaghetti to hawk. :D
I can see the overpriced pies and spaghetti, but did you see that oh so generic wine she's selling? I can't imagine anyone ponying up good money for that!

Robert Hayes should have been on there. I wonder what happened.
SHOUT has a nerve charging such an exorbitant price considering the lack of commentary and extras.
People who own Season one already have one of the bonus materials, right? I haven't even opened up my copy from years ago.

Just kidding, just kidding...

Yeah , Sven is right Anna! I was thinking is there any way you can cancel this order ? If it's coming from Hong Kong it might not play on a DVD player in the United States!!! It would be terrible if that happened! :( That happened to me once, I ordered a really obscure Erik Estrada movie from overseas when I was diggin' him and it wouldn't play at all ! It was VERY cheep and I found out the hard way why it was so cheep! :( It really would be worth spending the extra money and having a really good box set ! ;)

Oh about 2 dollars , and the shipping charge ! It was like 3 or 4 years ago, and I was more upset about not getting to see him more than I was about the money, and being it was such a little amount of money I didn't even bother to try to send it back!

An Erik Estrada movie was the plot point of a King of Queens episode actually. A line in the movie that Erik said to a monkey in a movie made Carrie fall in love with Doug. I can't remember the name of the fake movie they came up with though.
I am glad you weren't out too much money on that.

I do own 4 Erik movies that play very well! Two of them were really good movies ! ;) And the other two are REALLY BAD ! Only someone with a big crush would like these movies! I also have Season 1 of CHIPS! and the Love Boat Season 2 with him in an ep. with MacKenzie! ;),
And than Mr. Lembeck stole my heart and Mr. Estrada's DVD's are now collecting dust!

Should be okay either way. If it's what it's supposed to be, fine, if it's falsely advertised, it shouldn't be too hard to get a refund.

Kasey 12-05-2017, 09:16 AM Yes I agree, I usually avoid ebay sellers that appear to be new and have a low number of feedbacks.
Yes they are reputable. I also recommend "rarewaves", "blowitoutahere" "oddbanana", "moviemars" and "get_importcds" for any DVD, Bluray or CD purchases.
[QUOTE=MikaelaArsenault]Has Michael returned
No! He just directed an ep. But hopefully he will turn up on the new ODAAT in a cameo at least! ;) He was in an ep. of that show he directed "Baby Daddy"! He was SO CUTE older with his white hair!:eyes: Still a darn good actor too! ;)

The fake movie was Mc Cormick and JoJo it was based off of the Season 6 Episode of CHiPs "Country Action" where Ponch takes care of an Orangutan named Poppy.
Oh and if you need a stiff one, I got something for you.

I think this puts to bed any rumors of her distancing herself from the show...just the DVD release...the plot thickens.
If she's said anything about the DVD release on Twitter or Facebook, I've not seen it.

hmmm.....
I'm half way through season one at this point
