I agree. I think the addition of Stephanie worked wonders for the show.

happy days

The first season of Happy Days is actually the best. The producers spent time to make sure everything was authentic to the 1950s. The original Cunningham house was better. And Chuck hadn't yet been killed off.

family matters

The first season of Family Matters was much better than most of the later seasons. Urkel barely appeared, and the Winslows were like a real family. The show was about Harriet and her family in Chicago.

I agree. I thought the shows were better before it became The Steve Urkel Show. Same with Happy Days although I liked the show up until Richie left.

Definitely. Used in moderation, Urkel could have been just fine. Instead, the show devolved into Steven/Stephan/Myrtle/Urkel-bot/Urkel-clone/etc.

Richie was the show. When he left, that should have been the final episode. Instead, the show lingered on in Hell for another four seasons.

Most shows get better after their first season as they develop and get more into a groove. The more unusual cases are the event/watercooler shows that start real big like Empire and then have trouble topping their debut season.

One of the biggest improvements from 1-2 was Parks and Recreation. With just a few character tweaks the show improved in season two and then improved even more in season three as Rob Lowe and Adam Scott joined the show. The show just got funnier and the relationships grew stronger.

Good to see another "Parks & Recreation" fan on these boards! I agree with your statement, too.

My list:

Ellen - The first season wasn't all that good for a few reasons. But it improved a lot with its second season and reached its prime in the third. Season four was also good, but it got pretty lackluster in the fifth (final) season.

The Odd Couple - The series really improved with season two once they added the studio audience and made the characters more like Klugman & Randall.

Happy Days - The same as with "The Odd Couple." To me, it just got better and more enjoyable when the studio audience came, and the actors started getting hammy in their performances. The first two seasons were just rather dull to me.

Wings - I love this show, but it had such a boring, not-too-funny first season. At least in my opinion. The show got better about halfway through the second season and reached its peak in the third season.

Boy Meets World - The first season was a tad to kiddie for me. I much prefer it in the second season when Cory, Shawn and Topanga attend John Adams High.

Another thing that improved Newhart after the first season was switching from videotape to film.

Matlock had better seasons after the first season thanks to the major cast changes

When Bob Barker was the host of The Price is Right, the show during his hosting tenure had mostly better seasons from the mid 1970s to early 1990s

Before 1997, the syndicated Wheel of Fortune had better seasons

Seasons 2 thru 9 were better seasons for Woolery version of Love Connection

Emergency got Improved after the 1st Season

Wonder Woman got improved by 2nd season begin when Diana Prince looking fully good in civilian clothing

The Original version of Nickelodeon’s Double Dare had bettet seasons when it added 2 sucessful spinoffs(Super Sloppy & Family) in original incarnation & it had other team begin wearing blue uniforms.

With Exception of Season 8, Home Improvement had a period of better seasons

Seasons 2 thru 5 were better seasons of A Different World

Newhart became even greater after Season 1

Chuck didn't add anything to the show. Richie was meant to be the oldest.

Chuck was a basketball player, and was in college. As a big, dumb jock, he was a foil for Richie. They should have used him more. And they definitely could have brought him back when Richie left the show, instead of bringing in Ted McGinley as a previously unseen nephew.

Chuck had been officially erased by then, right? They didn't just ignore him, Howard had started telling people he had two children.

Wow. That Howard was cold as ice.

The Facts of Life improved dramatically after season one.

A Different World was basically a different show in its second season, but was much improved, more focused.

I thought that was just the final episode, right?

(And yes, Adamantium, Howard Cunningham was cold as ice. I suspect Chuck got a girl in trouble, and in retaliation, Howard cut him out of the family. You notice Marian never says she only has two kids.)

The Facts of Life improved dramatically after season one.

No way! In Season One, Eastland actually had more than four girls at the school. It felt more like a real school, with multiple students, actual classrooms, other regular Eastland staff other than Mrs. G, and multiple buildings outside the cafeteria. And no need for Joanna Marie Fonzarelli.
