View Full Version : Beaver's Old Buddy

I saw this today when Beaver has an old friend from the old neighborhood on the weekend and finds out you can't have the same fun like in the old days. Wouldn't it have been so interesting if they brought back Larry Mondello instead of this Jackie Waters. They could have showed them trying to play with army men and marbles and not enjoying it. Maybe Larry had matured and never suggested they smoke a pipe or play with Ward's drill. They could have reminisced and had a great time. However the whole idea was how friends grow apart.

The funniest part was when Ward is thinking what he can do to entertain the boys on a Sunday afternoon and finds out that Jackie has already called his parents to come get him. Ward was planning to take them to see Planet of Doom, Vampire Valley and Kongorilla. Ward is casually dressed then when it's time to eat on Sunday night he's in a suit and tie!! Why??

I had the same thought while I watching that episode. Who ever heard of Jackie Waters?

I thought it was strange the kid couldn't even hit the dart board. One of the better lines was Beaver: "Most of my friends got teeth." (Wally asked him if Jackie was the kid with the teeth.)

It would've been neat if Larry came back for that. But going by what Barbara Billingsley said in an interview, Rusty's real life mom and the show's producers weren't getting along, it was just never going to happen.

If Rory Stevens (Chuckie) is Rusty's brother, she surely would've been around for those episodes (maybe they bound and gagged her.) Beaver was to babysit for Chuckie on a fifth season episode, but I don't remember if he actually appeared (I don't think so). But of course he was on Chuckie's New Shoes.

As far as I know they aren't related.

And yes, Chuckie was in the babysitting episode. :)

They are related Rusty and Rory are brothers. So if Rory can be in Chuckie's Shoes, Beaver's Frogs and the one when Beaver babysits why not bring back Rusty for that episode Beaver's Old Buddy. He was still getting gigs on The Rifleman and such so bring him back to LITB. I would love to have known the whole story about Rusty's mother. Jay North had a horrid aunt and uncle and the produces let him go on for 4 years. I know they only abused Jay not the producers.

So they are brothers, weird it's not listed anywhere, at least that I've seen. Strange one stayed on for a few more eps, but not the other.
You would have thought if it was because of the mom, then she would have pulled them both off. And if it was because Rusty moved, he wouldn't have done more appearances on other shows.
Sounds like there's more to this than we'll ever know.

I kind of thought they were brothers, since there appears to be a resemblance. But there really isn't anything out there on the web about it, other than that Rory had a lot of roles (on LITB he was also the little boy who wanted ice cream when Wally was selling Igloo bars).

Re Ward's attire: Ward was dressed casually to go to the movies, but on Sunday he was still in his "Sunday best" from church.

Oh yeah that was him in the Igloo episode. "Mister! Hey, mister!"

It was Sunday afternoon I'm talking about. They have already gotten through Saturday and it's after church. Ward is in a shirt and cardigan discussing how to entertain the boys. They play darts then decides to take them to the movies but Jackie has already called parents. He is still in his sweater when his parents pick him up. Later June is setting a lovely table Sunday night and Ward is now in a suit and tie!! Weird!! Ward used to sit at the dinner table in rolled up sleeves in the early seasons later he was too formal and unnatural.

Well! it was Sunday...we must dress formally for Sunday dinner! (In reality this was probably just another filmed-at-another-time mistake.)

In another dress-up event, it was LOL for me when Eddie interrupted June's vacuuming (he had to inform her he had a job)...and she had her pearls on, of course! I think this was the counting fish episode.

And those high heels....but it seemed all women wore high heels around the house except Lucy she wore slippers or a comfortable shoe.

Finally found this thread with the discussion about the Stevenses. Today on the lawn mowing episode the man who chased Beaver and Gilbert off his lawn was played by Willam Stevens. Wonder if he is Rory's and Rusty's father. This could explain why Rory was on several season 4 episodes--if he is--maybe Rusty and the troublesome mother moved east, while Rory and his dad stayed in Hollywood for awhile.

Good theory. I noticed his name too but could find very little on the actor. It is a very common name. Rusty was born in 1948 in Boston and it seems William was already in CA. So who knows!!

Most character roles are played by established character actors. And for these people you can find info on them. People like Hal Smith, Edgar Buchanan, and Howard McNear, and Jean VanderPyl. I imagine these as "go-to" people when you need a miscellaneous role.

On the other hand, when you have a role like the angry guy, who has only one or 2 sentences to say (or yell), they might have gone to someone like Mr. Stevens, who might already be there (my theory again). It definitely happened with Rusty Hamer's mother on Danny Thomas Show. But since there is nothing on him, there is no way to really know. Jerry would know, but I don't know him!

Jerry wouldn't know. He knows very little about the show he is famous for. Once he described the plot of one of the episodes and it wasn't correct. In the book about LITB there are tons of errors and loves to talk about being the first show to have a toilet in a scene.

I had a similar experience with a friend who had moved to another state for a couple of years. I invited him over to reconnect and rekindle our friendship. It went south real fast and we got into an argument and tussle within the hour. Thank god for phones and he went home a short time later.

I kinda figured that Beaver and Jackie had grown apart and knew it was a BIG mistake for them to extend their visit. It would have been better for them to visit for a short time, then call the parents to ask for an extension.

Also, my father would have skinned me alive if I was using the side of the garage for the dart board. Seeing the darts land in the garage siding was cringe-worthy.

Even worse, I think in one episode they had the dart board in the bedroom, and Beaver missed, hitting the wall.

I will have to watch for the dart game inside the bedroom.

Yeah I've noticed a dart board in the bedroom at times. Yes sir, no sir, fold your napkin before leaving the dinner table. But, let's give braindead Beaver a weapon to play with?

There was one time when Eddie came into the room, and I think Beaver was tossing a tennis ball against the wall the beds are on. I'd either make him clean the wall or repaint it.

Scrabjan would probably know what episodes this and the darts in the bedroom happened. I know it would be season 5 or 6. It wasn't earlier because Beaver got more stupid as he got older. Or, put another way, older but wiser didn't apply to him.

Or, in the restaurant in Beaver Won't Eat, "Break your bread before you butter it."

I remember Beaver is trying to help Wally do something he wants. Beaver says if he hits the board he’ll get to go somewhere. Could it be how Wally wants to go with Bill Scott and the guys to the lake. No it’s when Wally wants to go to the all night party and Beaver hits the wall with a dart.

"Summer in Alaska" - Beaver is tossing/bouncing a ball against the bedroom wall, at the beginning.

If I were Ward I'd bounce him against the wall.

Or, in the restaurant in Beaver Won't Eat, "Break your bread before you butter it."

What a joke ...

Rule #3: There is only one correct way to butter and eat your bread.

The only correct way to butter and eat your bread is to:

Using a knife, put a bit of butter on the side of your bread plate first;

Then, tear off one bite-sized piece of bread at a time and butter that piece only, right before putting it into your mouth.

Many people make the mistake of buttering the whole slice of bread and then biting into the slice. This sets the stage for butter ending up on your fingers and around your mouth.

That's it! - All Night Party. W&J talk over whether to let Wally go to it, and the boys go upstairs. Beaver sets up the dart board, and hits the wall.

That’s it. Hey sorry for that old comment in 2017 saying Rusty and Rory were brothers. I guess I made a mistake and have since been enlightened. No way were they related.

It made sense to think they could be. At some point he said no on Facebook.

We never had a plate of bread on the table it would just get stale. Bread was for toast and sandwiches. As for buttering bread, once I saw someone put the whole slice in their palm and slap on butter. We also had hard butter not soft so hard to butter it.
