They used to show some good shows up to a few years ago. Beverly Hillbillies stood out to me in the morning. No more. They used to broadcast local Chicago news.No more. They used to televise Cubs and White Sox games. No more.
This is a terrible channel.Looks like their schedule consists mostly of Cops and a few other shows I have never heard of.How does this channel stay on the air ? It's just awful and shows nothing interesting anymore IMO.This used to be one of my favorite channels years ago. Does anyone here have a listing of what shows and sports WGN used to air going back into the 80's ?

I agree. It's a bad network now. The only show I watch on it is "In the Heat of the Night".

Me neither and I rarely even think of WGN anymore. It's not even shown in HD on my cable provider. I just thought about it today because the start of baseball season and remembered they no longer show the Cubs or White Sox.I used to catch the evening Chicago news on WGN every now and then. This used to be a great channel but wow ! How far they have slid is just amazing. They better figure something out to improve their programming because I have no idea how this channel can stay on the air for much longer. It's a joke.

I agree. It's a bad network now. The only show I watch on it is "In the Heat of the Night".

That's the only show I watch too. My dad watches COPS and Walker, Texas Ranger.

They do show some cool 80s-early 90s movies sometimes though.

Edited to add: Nevermind about the movies. I was thinking of the CW.

It's been a little over a decade since I gave up on subscribing to a Pay-TV provider to get my programming. IMO it simply isn't worth it. Most of the programming they no longer show are available via other means for a price that;s CHEAPER than paying a provider. I'm no longer at their mercy when it comes to watching what I want to see. One of these days I'll show you pictures of my mammoth collection of shows on home video. I own over 50,000 hours of programming on home video. Addd to that the amount of programming available on youtube I'm set for life! :D Let these channels rot in their greed, I got better things to spend my money on. {angryfire

PS, I don't have to wade through the insane amounts of advertising while I watch any show. :D

Just another commercial filled network that plays the same shows over-and-over. We now have 500 channels and look at how it turned out. If you don't like the show on at 6 AM it will still be on when you get home at 6 PM.

For a while they were pretty good. They cancelled one of the few decent original and creative series on there ---Salem, which was giving them some press. Now it's nothing but another channel that airs a select few shows all day. I don't know why cable channels today want to be carbon copies of each other.

I read someplace that WGN might be sold. I still expect whoever owns it to acquire 4 or so series and run them in 12 hour marathons. I remember when there was a different show every 30 minutes or every hour. I think if they did not start the practice TVLand was one of the first to have frequent marathons or "block party" days.

What good is having so many channels if the same show is always on? I see "Friends" is on TBS for hours then it switches to another Network and runs several more hours.

Sinclair Broadcast Group CEO Chris Ripley didn’t mince words: WGN America’s programming focus will be very different once Sinclair’s $3.9 billion acquisition of Tribune Media is completed.

The Baltimore-based station owner has great ambition for using the heft of its expanded national footprint to launch new businesses, potentially even an MVPD-like bundle of channels, but high-end scripted originals will no longer be a priority if Sinclair and Tribune secure federal approval to tie the knot.

Ripley told Wall Street analysts Monday that WGN America’s ratings cannot support the channel’s current level of spending on original series. Sinclair’s focus will be on “repositioning WGN America for profitable growth.” Ripley noted that WGN America already had begun paring back under the direction of interim Tribune CEO Peter Kerns, emphasizing lower-cost originals and acquired series.

“The ratings WGN America (delivers) doesn’t justify the type of spending they do on the original programming side,” Ripley said. “The channel could be run much more profitably on a fraction of what they spend on programming.”

Ripley didn’t name specific shows but his remarks left no doubt the WGN America will back away from scripted dramas, a field it moved into aggressively under previous CEO Peter Liguori. Liguori left the company in March after four years at the helm.

“Underground,” WGN America’s top original series, has drawn critical acclaim and a respectable audience, by WGN America standards. The historical drama wraps its second season on Wednesday. It’s likely that producer Sony Pictures Television will look to find a new home for “Underground.”

Earlier this month WGN America canceled another Sony-produced drama, “Outsiders.” WGN America also recently completed production on a pilot from Warner Horizon Television, “Scalped,” a crime drama set on a Native American reservation.

Meanwhile, Ripley emphasized that Sinclair’s long-term vision for the company includes expanding into cutting-edge data services and even MVPD-like offerings, using the robust broadcast bandwidth that will be enabled once broadcasters, tech giants and the FCC finish wrangling over an upgraded technical standard for broadcast TV, or ATSC 3.0.

“This is key to getting us that much closer to a nationwide network for advanced services such as virtual MVPDs and connected cars,” Ripley said. “That’s the sort of network that opens up incremental revenue opportunities that are beyond core broadcasting.”

All of WGN's originals so far have been rated TVMA. They might do better if they switch to a more family audience with TVPG shows.

It should be also noted that WGN America lost $74 million last year on the syndication package deal for CBS' Person of Interest and Elementary, as the shows attracted no viewers in reruns.

Sinclair should not be allowed to own any channels at all. Once they took over the local news on Channel 45 in Baltimore, it went completely downhill and it appears WGN is following the same path.

completely worthless station now - I just scanned through the next week's schedule and the only thing I would watch if there was absolutely nothing else on and I had nothing else recorded would be Raising Hope.

I think the FCC needs to stop allowing these mergers and acquisitions that keep producing these completely worthless stations that essentially could be running infomercials 24-7 and it wouldn't affect their ratings whatsoever.

They used to broadcast local Chicago news.No more. They used to televise Cubs and White Sox games. This used to be one of my favorite channels years ago. Does anyone here have a listing of what shows and sports WGN used to air going back into the 80's ?
Wow this shocks me to hear that they don't air Cubs games anymore. That's a tragedy because I've always associated WGN with Cubs games. I remember watching the very first night Cubs game in 1987 on WGN. Just sad, what is the world coming to?
