Miracles never cease. I did get the 60's version of Life Upon the Wicked Stage, thanks to a generous member of this forum. And, well, one is better than none!

Adieu!

I have that episode too, it was the only one you listed that was actually shown on that Nostalgia TV channel, it had changed it's name to something else by the time it showed the color Honeymooners, but it was the same channel. Anyway it was a good episode, don't understand why it was never released commercially though. Thanks Nostalgia Channel.

MPI is just weird with the stuff they release. They're a little like A&E video in that they are not too selective of source material AND they have to edit things for no reason other than they can.

One day they might release at least part of that missing 1977 Christmas show. Now there's one that's hard to track down, even though its out there.

It is believed that "Life Upon The Wicked Stage" is full of musical clearance issues compared to the other hour ones. As a matter of fact, I remember reading that that episode was scheduled and than cancelled three times on what is now Youtoo America. It finally got cleared to air in syndication.

As far as the other short color Honeymooners sketches go, I somehow managed to call Gleason's daughter. She said that Jackie Gleason Enterprises doesn't have them and CBS does. When I told her that CBS doesn't have them, she didn't know who does. Perhaps they are lost. Perhaps they are under litigation. But, I got told that the chances of those short sketches seeing the light of day are slim and none.

The question come back to where are the whole JACKIE GLEASON SHOW episodes these came from and who owns them (Jackie Gleason Enterprises? CBS? Both?) and where the 2" Tapes and/or B&W Kines might be. For that matter, what is the state/fate of the non-Honeymooners Jackie Gleason Shows From Fall 1966 onward.

I am thinking that since Gleason's daughter told me that JGE doesn't have them and CBS said that they don't have them, they might be lost. BTW, there are a few episodes from the 60s version of the Gleason Show available on eBay and ioffer.

Now since the Jackie Gleason special The Big Sell all of a sudden appeared on kinevideo.net, for all I know that one of these days, one or some or all of those short color sketches may appear out of the blue.

Sounds like a whole season is incomplete. At some point Jackie never got the tapes or kinescopes. (CBS was making kines into the late 1960's) Do we even know what else is missing 1966-1970? How many of the other color non-Honeymooners JGS even exist.

I NEVER trust the networks to know what they hold and not old for out of date material - some of that stuff hasn't been inventoried in decades - and CBS has both storage on the East and West Coasts. CBS THE NETWORK's holdings are not the same as CBS Television Syndication's holdings (The Viacom/Paramount/Worldvision/NTA-Republic-Spelling/Desilu libraries)

There's also the Military Broadcaster AFRTS - who knows what they might hold, if they still hold anything at this point - the source of pre-Burbank TONIGHT SHOWS both as Kinescopes and loads of edited 30-minute radio shows. (The edited radio shows have finally started to circulate among collectors of late)

Yeah, never believe these lost stories. Stuff may be lost, but they're lost "out there", somewhere in the archives, but they're most likely there. Uncatalogued, maybe, but there.

There's a thread here on the board in which someone mentions online programs KODI and Boom Boom and both have access to HUGE libraries of programs.

I seriously doubt that Boom Boom has the unreleased Honeymooners sketches but who knows.

Well.. I now have a more complete Honeymooners collection including the unreleased 1977 Christmas show. It does not feature the curtain call but has the credits as broadcast with the ABC network announcer. Nice!

If I ever get hold of the curtain call for the Christmas show, I'm gonna cut together one complete episode. It really should have been released by MPI.

I doubt it was music rights but more a problem with MPI and the estate of Gale Gordon not being able to reach an agreement. It really is a funny and energetic installment, and I'm glad to have all the material that I've received from generous members of this forum!

Any number of things could have prevented the release of that Christmas show, including the Charles Dickens source material. I don't think Gale Gordon's estate has anything to do with it as MPI also distributes Here's Lucy. As for the short color sketches, they're more than likely in the Gleason archive and his daughter just doesn't know it. Gleason Enterprises licensed a clip of George Carlin from a January 1969 show to MPI for a DVD release years ago, and MPI originally planned to use those short sketches as extras for the reunion DVDs, so CBS having the rights makes no sense.

I now have his daughter's contact information just in case anybody wants to contact her and ask her to look in the archives and find those sketches since Gleason Enterprises licenses a clip of George Carlin from a January 1969 show to MPI. Those sketches have got to see the light of day.

Jackie Gleason kept a record of ALL of his shows and appearances (he was very smart to have done this, by the way) and kept them in his own vault. That's how the "Lost" '50's episodes were suddenly "found". I'm quite sure Jackie didn't edit the programs and only kept the Honeymooner segments, he kept the entire programs. Therefore I'm sure ALL of Jackie's shows all of them, not just the Honeymooners ones from the 1960's DO exist and they were in Jackie's vault, at least at the time of his death. They still exist and are ready to be "found" when the owners see it as financially beneficial for them to "discover" them.

I don't believe he had everything. DuMont destroying his earlier kinescopes may have been the reason he started requesting copies of his CBS shows. As for why at least five of the CBS shows from the 50s are missing, it's possible he lent them out. If he gave them to friends or guest stars, he probably wouldn't have made note of it, but if they were lent out for clip shows, there should be a record of it somewhere. It was also reported that some earlier shows had deteriorated too badly to be salvaged.

Jackie's b/w early '60's variety shows the one's with Frank Fontaine and others were also shown in a 1/2 hour edited syndication package in the 1980's (or maybe it was the late '70's?). This is just another example to show Jackie's shows were saved and are available when it's suitable for them to be. These b/w early '60's shows were saved and I'm quite sure that his mid and late '60's color shows were all saved too, and not just the Honeymooner ones, ALL of them. I just wish those in charge would see fit to release them ALL on DVD and in complete formats.

...and those were all sourced from video tape and not kinescopes so we know that the "American Scenes" were mostly, if not all saved.

And do we know the Gleason estate has taken a look at CBS Fort Lee and CBS Radford (Studio City) Vaults to see if any tapes were still in storage there. It is odd a block of hour shows featuring Honeymooners segments are missing - we also don't know what is missing for non-Honeymooner color shows.

Does the estate even have a known list of missing post-1957 shows. What about the half hour late 1950's show?

Sadly, I think lack of interest has to do with non-Honeymooners stuff not getting released. It's business at the end of the day, and if there's no profit to be made, then nobody's going to invest in such a project. Manufacture-on-demand may be an idea, but guest stars would have to be cleared either way. Regarding the half-hour Gleason show, I know there's at least one episode at the Paley Center, but I'd assume he would've had these in his vault as well.

People who keep saying that these short 60s skits seem to forget that in the 2002 CBS anniversary special hosted by Kevin James there are brief snippets of the 1968 "Six Months To Live" mixed in with the 1952 version. There has to be more of a business reason of why these have not seen the light of day. Perhaps they just don't want to pay the original writers ... or perhaps they refused to sign a release. (This is speculation, I have no more knowledge than anyone else.) The point is they exist, in some form, but something is preventing them from being released. Maybe someday.

Or, the eps need some tlc to bring them up to visual standards. The clips from "Six Months.." in that anniversary show were marred by an horizontal scratch 1/3 way down the screen. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, but might indicate other problems with the archive tape.

Could be that plus a myriad problems including those you mention like rights, writers, whatever.

Somebody suggested years ago that they were looking to license the full variety shows rather than just the Honeymooners sketches, which would explain the absence of these and the American Scene stuff on DVD. They licensed the "Adoption" show for the Blu-ray though, so maybe things have changed. Here's something positive to keep in mind: MPI has a history of doing individual releases, followed by "complete" sets years later. We've seen this with the Lost Episodes, George Carlin's HBO specials, Dark Shadows, Here's Lucy, The Doris Day Show, The Donna Reed Show, Family Affair, etc. It would make sense for them to do the same with the Color Honeymooners, in which case I'd expect those short sketches, "Wicked Stage" if they could clear it, and hopefully "Incredible World of Ed Norton," which should be in the Gleason archive. Between the special you mentioned being released on the Blu-ray with unedited color clips and the unfortunate deaths of Sheila and Jane getting all that media coverage, the color episodes have gotten a lot of free promotion in recent years.

Yes, that is where the (Paley Center) found CBS' existing kinescope prints of the 1950's "Jackie Gleason Show" in the early 1980's with Honeymooners Sketches before Viacom even approached Gleason about his archive.

It's where it all began - the search for the skits to show in a retrospect festival and the rest is history.

Also, there was a tape trader on the internet that had the First half of the Jackie Gleason Show that had the Incredible World of Ed Norton sketch but the sketch was missing from his copy and in place was footage from another Jackie Gleason show episode.

Does anyone else have this?

I found the 1977 Christmas special on YouTube yesterday. Could not believe it. I have seen all the classic 39 and some of the short Honeymooner's sketches from the 50s, which have found their way on to YouTube, but only ever seen one colour episode. (The first of the colour musical ones from 1966.) As I am in the UK I am not sure if any of the DVDs would play on a machine over here? The 1977 show was really funny and enjoyable.

I am looking for the Honeymooners sketch from 1970 entitled "The Incredible World of Ed Norton." It is a rare sketch that focuses solely on Ed Norton and Ralph Kramden is nowhere to be found. It was supposed to be a pilot for a spinoff that never got picked up. Someone has got to have it.

Me and cloggedmind have been searching for the Jackie Gleason Show from 1/17/70 that has The Incredible World of Ed Norton in it. We have contacted many people in regards to finding this episode or at least info as to why it hasn't been released. While most folks we've contacted do not have any concrete answers, most have been eager to help or offer words of encouragement. It is apparent, however, that the actual copyright owners, the Gleason family, are not keen on entertaining requests about the material.

In the past, I have contacted Geraldine Chuktuk, Gleason's daughter, many times and she has always been nice...except for the last time I contacted her. It was not a pleasant talk. I was telling her about the episode that we have been looking for and in the middle, she said: "Get to the point." I asked her about the episode and she said there are no extra clearance issues and it's in a vault. She hung up on me before I asked her where is the vault?

I also contacted Jackie's stepson, Craig Horwich, five years ago, left a message and he didn't respond. I got told beforehand that he might be difficult to deal with. I did however speak to two people who did have pleasant talks with him but when me and cloggedmind asked them to talk to Craig about the episode, they said they didn't think it was a good idea due to either lack of comfortableness or experiences. When cloggedmind heard this, he said that Jackie's children must not be all that interested in dealing with fans. What do you all think of this?

Frank; these people that you are contacting have probably been asked a thousand times over for footage of their relatives work and they don’t have the incentive like you do to track it down or look into unless they are getting a lot of money or royalties for it

I can’t imagine Gleason’s heirs want to hear from fans who want them to dig around in the archives for material. If they did it for one, they’d have a hundred other requests. If you were a production company looking to license the material and pay money for it, you’d likely have better luck.

Sure. I posted the episode here:

The Honeymooners - Life Upon The Wicked Stage - video Dailymotion (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7tyds1)

Yes, it is the syndication edit with some song and dance missing (notably the opening June Taylor Dancers number) but 'tis bettah than nothin', right?

A simple browser add-on for downloading video should be able to grab it, or one of the webpage-based downloaders. If you can't snag it, let me know and I'll upload it to Mega.
