View Full Version : You know you watch too much UM when...

Having grown up watching UM (and now the reruns), certain phrases have crept into my daily life, and now that of my wife and kids.

For example:

- Whenever I pretend to be mad at my wife, I use the line from the live exorcism on UM and say, "Quiet, devil! Listen to the prayers!"

- Being in Minnesota, my hands are often cold in the winter. When I touch my kids on the arm and they complain about cold hands, I invoke the Resurrection Mary story and say, "That is the touch of a corpse." Now THEY run around and grab each other and scream "TOUCH OF A CORPSE!" (Their little friends in the neighborhood think they are nuts for saying this and clearly don't get it...)

- I have been known to say: "Yep. And I'm Michael Jordan. And I play basketball for the Chicago Bulls."

- When asking my kids who made a mess and they deny it, I invoke the Donnie Hanson story and say, "So you want me to believe that someone came in here, identity and motive unknown, and did this?"

These are just a few but I didn't realize how often I quote this show until I started thinking about it. Are there any lines, phrases, or rituals from UM that are part of your daily life?

....when they release the Robert Stack versions on Amazon and you haven't watched any other show on TV for a week...even though you have seen every single segment previously...but you have this fear in the back of your mind that they could pull those shows at any minute, because it seems to good to be true, so you watch as much as you can as often as you can :)

Or you watch this and get the same creepy feelings you did as a kid.

Sometimes I miss with my wife who knows I love the show. I'll say something along the lines of "I'm taking out the trash" or "Going for a walk with the dog". Then I'll imitate Robert Stack's voice as say "He was never seen again" as I walk out the door.

Yep, I'm out at night often (or used to be more often over the past 10-15 years: used to work 3rd shift) and whenever I'm at an ATM, in a desolate area, or a part of my city (or another: accidentally went through Gary, Indiana with some friends at night about 8 years ago) that I don't travel to very often, the UM theme song or similar creepy music with a Robert Stack voice-over about something bad happening to me will cross my mind at least once, lol.

If ANYTIME you think "I'll clean" you immediately have to resist the urge to follow it up with, "I live here. I like to live in a clean house."

I was putting my clean laundry away last night, and I have a several pairs of socks that have different colors at the heel and toe, including an orange pair. I was able to match up every other pair, but one of the orange ones is missing. I swear. I'm not kidding. No joke. I'm thinking that maybe my cat hid it somewhere, which would make sense since my cat is orange also.

I think your cat was watching that segment earlier and hid it somewhere to mess with you.

Hahaha! I totally get this...

I have three similar motivations for watching like crazy now:

1. I love this show and love seeing the original episodes again
2. I want to help pump up the ratings to they make more seasons available
3. Like you, I'm paranoid I will go to the Amazon app and UM will be gone!

It's funny because my 8-year-old son came into the family room last night and said, "Dad, are you watching that mysteries show AGAIN? And I can't watch it, either..." Then my wife said, "So we can see the original ones not on the DVD? I can't wait to watch too." :D

same here

I think it's because all of the notes played on the piano in the closing theme are played in minor key, which we associate with fear, discomfort, and other things of that nature. The bass also sounds like something out of a late 70's/early '80's British "art rock" song, like from groups like Roxy Music or Japan (i.e. the late Mick Karn), ha.

When you watch an old show on MeTV or something, see the original airdate, and think of either an UM case that happened on that day or the actual UM episode that aired that day.

You attempt to find the location of the New Life Massage Parlor, and your "research" leads you to various sex shop websites in the area. Then you feel like an idiot when a coworker comes up behind you and sees what you're looking at, and then they believe that you are a pervert now. Thus is life.

15684 Fort Campbell Blvd Oak Grove, KY

I'm almost positive that's the place.

I googled that address and it came up with a place called "The Toybox" (sex store), and I found current address for The Toybox and it was a different building. I think it used to be in that deserted area before it moved. It does look very similar to the building structure shown in the segment.

Guilty of this myself. I've also subjected some friends to the occasional segment for pretty much the same reason.

How often have you done that?

I don't even bother bringing the show up to my family and some of my friends. None of them are as interested in it (or know about it, in some cases) as I am, hence the usefulness of message boards such as this one.

I do that all the time. Except I say it in my head instead of out loud. Not just with the news or a show but if I hear ANY people mention a city where some UM related case happened, I immediately think of the case.

For instance, a couple years ago a coworker told me he was planning a trip to Breckenridge, CO to do some snowboarding. My immediate reaction was a gasp but I was too embarrassed to explain why. In my head, I was saying "When you get there, don't hitchhike and don't wear any orange socks!"

I checked the link and I'm pretty sure that's the same Max Planck we are talking about.

The specific reference is from a 1989 UM episode about near death experiences. A guy named Tom Sawyer (seriously) claimed that he almost died after a truck he was repairing fell on him and he had a vision of the afterlife. After the experience, he became extremely interested in quantum physics and inexplicably started reading and talking a lot about Max Planck. I think this was remarkable because Sawyer had a lackluster education and might have even been illiterate according to the segment. It was implied the experience somehow made him more intelligent or sparked his interest in this stuff I guess.

This thread is great, lol!

My next door neighbor occasionally travels and leaves her key with me, so I can stop in twice a day to feed her cat. Last week she had a beach weekend planned and made the usual arrangements with me. When I went over the first night she was gone, I noticed her car was still in the garage, and then saw her suitcase lying out, neither of which she'd ever done before. After feeding the cat, I came home and told my family that I was concerned because of what I'd found. I told my mom that I was worried and asked if I should call the police, lol.

She laughed at this and said, "Honey...not everything is an unsolved mystery. You're watching that show too much again!" My neighbor is fine BTW. Had a lovely vacation.

-When you travel to meet someone featured on UM and think it's a bigger deal than meeting the president or a Hollywood star.
-When you go driving to cemeteries around Nashville, Indiana trying to find the grave for Clarence Roberts, and then wind up hiking around the last cemetery for 45 minutes trying to find it.
-When you're watching the segment of the murdering teens in Texas/Arkansas, the cat sitter walks in, you think it's an intruder and you come out yelling with a hockey stick in hand.
-When you know such arcane UM trivia such as the fact that three of the hosts died in a year ending in the number 3, in ten year increments (Raymond Burr 1993, Robert Stack 2003, Dennis Farina 2013).
-When the business you once worked at knows instinctively that you like Unsolved Mysteries, and mentions it during a TV show theme trivia call-in (featuring UM) on a radio station.

If these all apply to you, I am impressed

I have done/experienced all of the above, going back to the early 2000s! The UM interviewee I met was Danny Gordon, back in January 2003. As of a year or two ago, he was still working at WYVE Radio in Wytheville, VA, and it was simply an honor to meet him. I didn't bring up the UFOs, as I figured he'd probably had enough UFO enthusiasts bugging him, and just discussed the radio business. His long track record at WYVE is impressive alone, of at least 30 years.

A few more to add to the list:

-When you hear "All My Loving" by the Beatles on the radio, you think of the alarm clock radio spinning around the dial in the haunted bunk bed segment (listen closely for the song).
-When you hear "I Only Have Eyes for You" by The Flamingos, you think of the Louis Carlucci segment.
-When you get a license plate, entirely by chance, from the state of New York, that has the letters "G-Z" in it and you feel excited that your license plate had a connection to a UM case (Dennis Depue). Not to give that creep any props, just the license plate/UM connection.
-When every time you think of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, NY, you have a vision of the limo of the Weinberg family heading into the fraudulent health clinic.
-When you discuss the dangers of hitchhiking with others and you cite the case of Phillip Innis Frazier on Unsolved Mysteries. I think this might apply to warning people of a lot of different dangers!
-When you're working in suburban Philadelphia on a project, finish your workday and you go sit in rush hour traffic through the city to check on the General Wayne Inn, 30 miles away.
-When you go around for fun, when you're alone, and imitate lines from the show ("Judy Himes is Alive, and she lives in Omaha" for instance).
-And I think we all experience this, but when you find you want laughter, you watch old episodes of UM (Sammy Wheeler, The Mann Family, fertility statue, the obviously male dog on the Joe Shepard case, or any unintentionally funny segment cited on this board).
