Disney Channel's popular Boy Meets World spinoff, Girl Meets World, has been canceled after three seasons.

The news, announced Wednesday night by the show's writers' room Twitter account, comes as little surprise given that the series starring returning favorites Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel had wrapped its third season with the cast posting farewell messages on social media.

Its biggest issue that it probably played too much on Boy Meets World for people who didn't watch that and not enough for people that grew up on BMW.

considering most of their other current shows are complete garbage this seems a bit hasty.

Personally, I thought the writing was way too over the top. I mean would high school kids talk like this?

Personally, I thought the writing was way too over the top. I mean would high school kids talk like this?

The problem was that it felt more like a typical Disney show made for 10-13 year old tweens as opposed to a show that can be universally enjoyed by every age group. Sure, BMW had a very childish tone in the first one or two seasons, but by Season 3, it had developed its own identity.

GMW (http://uproxx.com/tv/girl-meets-world-canceled/) on the other hand, seemed too preachy and SJW-esque to me. Maybe because BMW was on over 20 years ago and on primetime network TV it was different and society was different. BMW would have goofy, kids growing up moment along with serious moments. I never felt the same with GMW.

The problem was the show wasn't Girl Meets World. It's Girl growing up in Cory Matthew's world. It never felt real. She lived in a bubble, a pale imitation of Cory's life/shadow and emulated that to a tee. And the problems arose out of living in that world, not The World.

It had a good run. At least it never jumped the shark.

New year, new network? Maybe it's not time to say goodbye to Girl Meets World after-all! http://eonli.ne/2iqaUjf

I think GMW does come back, they should loosen the reigns a bit on the writing.

Let's put it this way, have you ever run into middle school or high school kids that talk like the kids in this show?

Teen 1: Let's go this magical window in my room that makes everyone say their deepest thoughts!

Teen 2: Sure, that makes perfect sense.

Every episode had a lesson that seemed to be tied up neatly at the end.

Well, on the contrary, depending on whom you ask, the show went the wrong direction (http://www.bonethefish.com/viewtopics.php?5157) (and never really recovered) with the Riley/Lucas/Maya triangle storyline. Or, when they went out of their way to make Angela irrelevant and basically only brought her back to make Shawn and Maya's mom happen.

I've heard that it's approached by Netflix, but sadly it didn't pick up season 4. So I guess it's really over

I can see the argument that there were too many episodes with messages, but not the relationship or BMW stuff.

Eh, the Texas three-parter was the peak of the show, and Angela was always irrelevant in the scope of Shawn's life.

I can see the argument that there were too many episodes with messages, but not the relationship or BMW stuff.

Here's the thing with Angela's character and why she was so "out of the ordinary" (and maybe this is sound a bit controversial). You can make the argument that casting a black girl as the love interest a white tween/teen heartthrob on a hit '90s TV show was a big deal. And Angela was a long term love interest instead of a one-off (otherwise, if there was a young woman of color on these types of shows, she was always off to the side while her white girlfriends had lots of romantic storylines) like that episode of Saved by the Bell where they randomly paired Lisa w/ Zack.

Angela to the best of my recollection (even w/o her ethnicity being brought up) was Shawn's (who was in the past, portrayed as somewhat of a young Lothario/playboy) first truly serious girlfriend. And I don't recall Angela's race or the fact that Shawn was in an interracial relationship was heavily touched upon.

I guess my main point is that GMW erasing Angela from the narrative is depending on whom you ask, going back to the unspoken rule of how black female characters are to be treated on these types of shows.

And even w/o the Angela factor, it did not make sense to have Shawn marry Maya's mother. That did not feel well built into the storyline. They seriously met and dated once, and then got married. Shawn could have still been a mentor to Maya without having to marry her mother.

"Girl Meets World" is Officially Dead
by Andy Swift
May 3, 2017

Riley and Maya took on the world… and the world won.

"Girl Meets World" creator Michael Jacobs used the show’s writers’ Twitter account on Wednesday to confirm that, despite his best efforts, a new home has not been found for the canceled Disney Channel sitcom.

"I wasn't able to find a new venue for the show. I'm sorry. We brought our best and hope we made you think and feel. Until next time. Thanks."

You're going to have to get a major hold on this rumor (https://goo.gl/MPciOx) that I just stumbled across (http://www.agcwebpages.com/BLINDITEMS/2017/JUNE.html), which has a much darker and shocking reason behind why GMW really got canceled :

Everything was going swimmingly with this series. Lots of fans. Considering the platform where it was airing it got ok ratings. People were kind of shocked when the show got canceled, especially considering the owners of the show and where it was airing. The reason? The executive producer of the show found out the barely legal actress on the show who turned him down because she was underage when they met had been hooking up with her love interest on the show from day one when she was underage. They did a very good job of keeping it hidden. When the executive producer found out about it, he demanded, yes demanded the actress have sex with him. When she told him to f**k off, he killed the show. Boom, just like that. Done. He also has basically blackballed the lead actor although when he tried to do the same to the actress she threatened him with a lawsuit and sexual harassment and a million other things. Not only did he back off about the blackballing he wrote her a big check to keep quiet about what happened when she was underage.

I wonder if Rowan Blanchard is partially to blame for why GMW was canceled? Rowan is very feminist and was allegedly angry with Disney Channel for censoring her show (simply put, she wanted LGBT and social justice themes on the show) and refusing to move it to ABC/Freeform or Netflix.

Boy Meets World ended on May 5th, 2000. Mr. Feeney said his goodbyes. Fourteen years later, Disney Channel brought it back — this time following Corey and Topanga's daughter Riley Matthews and her best friend Maya Hart.

Joe from VKMTVStudios spent nearly five hours on the full story of Girl Meets World: the pre-production decisions, the casting process (including 78 rounds of auditions and the Rowan Blanchard / Sabrina Carpenter role swap), the reunion moments with Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, William Daniels, Anthony Tyler Quinn, and Trina McGee, the Riley/Maya/Lucas love triangle, Maya's father storyline, Sabrina Carpenter's parallel music career beginning during the show, the Disney Channel creative limitations debate, the ratings decline, Michael Jacobs' failed attempt to move the show to Freeform, Netflix, or Hulu, and the series finale that none of them were ready to film.

The show ran three seasons. It was cancelled on December 29, 2016. The fans built a campaign. Michael Jacobs could not find a new home for it. The story is more complicated than the Disney Channel budget decisions.
