I mentioned back in an "ideal schedule" thread that I thought it would be neat to do an all black and white schedule. I don't know much about things like soaps, medical shows, etc., though, so I thought it would be interesting to see if several people could contribute to a diverse schedule. A few thoughts:

1. How it will work is that people can propose one show at a time, along with a time slot. To give people a chance to join in, maybe limit at first to two picks per day per person, with any two picks by a person separated by at least six hours;

2. Once or twice a day, I'll go through and update a master schedule so that people can see what time slots are still available.

3. I'd like to try to make it a fairly realistic schedule, maybe with some soaps in the afternoon, some game shows in the morning, etc. I don't want to be rigid with that, though. If there's just a lot of shows of some type to include then they'll get more space. My initial thought is that there's enough programming so that stripping is not required, except for shows that were originally on multiple days per week

4. Try to preserve some courtesy in scheduling. I think it would be neat to have shows in their original time slots, but if that leads to the first three shows some night being half hour sitcoms at 8, 9, and 10:00, then we'll probably jiggle things around so that we have a time slot available for an hour-long variety or drama show.

5. I haven't thought this out extensively, so please discuss any of the points above, or make any other suggestions or observations you might have (one question would be how to fill the late nights). It's a cooperative project!

Two things I'm thinking about:

1. What to do with shows that transitioned from black-and-white to color? My thought is just to treat them like they ended when they transitioned to color. For instance, My Three Sons would be treated as if it had only lasted for five seasons, with Uncle Charlie coming in toward the end.

2. What to do about late night/early mornings? I think only the biggest markets, if those, were on all night during the days of black and white TV. One thing I can think of is The Million Dollar Movie, which concept I think was used almost everywhere (similarly, Dialing for Dollars could be inserted in the late morning or late afternoon). Another possibility would be to have theme late nights - one night of Westerns, one crime or detectives, one medical shows, one sitcoms. Maybe some of these shows could be shorter lived or more obscure than some of the blockbusters that we're listing in prime time.

We're almost a week into this, and prime time is nearly filled. Below are some proposed (just proposed) additions of local news and movies. These would have two effects: (1) to make the schedule more like a real local station would have; and, (2) to provide a framework for programming different portions of the remaining schedule. Proposed additions (I also moved a couple shows around a little around noon) are in bold. The new programs are:

1. Eyewitness News: really the only local news "format" of the era. I'm not really committed to it, as it doesn't seem that it really started spreading till the mid-sixties, but it's plausible and sounds cooler than "Local News."
2. Dialing for Dollars Movie (could also run late morning): the station would show a cheap movie (e.g., Blondie or Francis the Talking Mule), and people would watch because if they called your name you could call in and win money.
3. Million Dollar Movie: better movies (e.g., Hope and Crosby "Road" pictures) that some stations would show every night that week. Other stations would have a different movie every night.
4. Creature Feature/Chiller Theatre: double feature of horror movies, with an outrageously corny local host.

Please let me know what you think about adding these shows or not, if they should be in these time slots, or if there are other common local shows that might be added.

It seems like this was a once-a-week, 30-minute show in the 1950s?

I think we should discuss before we start stripping shows that weren't stripped when they were on in first run. There are still some heavyweight sitcoms (e.g., Burns and Allen and Phil Silvers) that haven't been scheduled, plus many other shows. I don't think we need to drop five episodes of one show down yet.

I could easily see stripping an hour of some show(s) in the morning, and probably several hours in the afternoon if a soap opera guru doesn't join in here. When we start doing that, though, I think we should re-open things so that any show can be used, even if it's already listed in prime time.

Regarding the 7:00 pm slot: it's a weird slot, I guess because it's developed that it's always either news or a stripped game show or sitcom. I've considered several options for this:

1. Captain Video: probably the classic hit in this time slot, but only a handful of episodes are in existence. I've seen just a few clips, and it looks very primitive (although it kind of reminds me of early Dr. Who).
2. Jeopardy: very popular in the time slot today. Unfortunately, it looks like it was in color from Day 1 in 1964.
3. There were some other shows that were sort-of stripped in the time slot in the 50s, including Perry Como and Dinah Shore shows and Kukla, Fran and Ollie.
4. One possibility might be to "strip" five different prime time game shows from the era. To Tell the Truth is still available, You Bet Your Life was very popular, $64,000 Question, Name That Tune is still available.

Comments and suggestions are appreciated on the above. I'll post something tomorrow about plans to move forward now that prime time is nearly wrapped up. I think that we can probably be more efficient by breaking up the remaining time into segments that people can program independently.

We're basically finished with the prime time section. My suggestion is that now we break up what's left into segments and program those individually. We have:

Weekday morning, which could have a lot of game shows;
Weekday afternoon, which could have some more soaps, maybe with some after-school kids' stuff;
Saturday morning, maybe kids' shows;
Saturday afternoon, maybe including some sports;
Sunday morning/afternoon, maybe including some public affairs;

Overnights (c. 3:00-6:00 am): these can be kind of interesting, because I don't think many markets were on 24 hours a day in the black-and-white years. I think they could be good times for similar programs to be grouped: a Western block, a sitcom block, a variety block, a crime block, etc. I could even see a little block of early UK programming. Since these would be the less-watched hours, it might a good place for one-year wonders, historic curiosities, and shows that maybe had one year in B & W before switching to color.

When a segment has been programmed, just post it and maybe there will be some discussion and suggestions. And then move on to another.

I'll start with the early morning, 6 to 8 am. I expect to use some half hour adventure things (Roy Rogers).

A couple of issues: the Today Show was usually shown for two hours, but it was actually performed for three hours and stations usually only played two of those. In this case, we'll play one hour. Second, some of these shows, like Sergeant Preston, were actually filmed in color but broadcast in black and white. I'm calling them black and white because even if you were among the rare people who had color receivers then, the programs would be in black and white when you watched them.

Yeah, the only religious show I have in mind is Bishop Sheen's "Life Is Worth Living," but that was more a lecture series than any kind of service.

Edit: It looks like Oral Roberts and Rex Humbard had the early ministries with televised services. Billy Graham televised his revival crusades, but I'm not sure if he ever broadcast regular services.

It's amazing what kind of programming they used to put on. After you asked about documentaries, I started thinking back through old non-fiction type shows, eventually thought of the Young People's concerts that the New York Philharmonic did. And I guess it started right near the end of our era, but CBS used to put on a series of international children's films on Saturday afternoon. Unbelievable today what you could find on the networks!

A few thoughts on the project:

1. Thanks to catsrule, Edison, bmasters9, Zoneboy, 70s show watcher, and AMackII for submitting picks. I'm mainly a sitcom person, and couldn't have filled in many slots for a lot of genres without other people contributing ideas and jogging my memory now and then.

2. I learned quite a bit from this. I think that there are probably 20 shows on the schedule that I hadn't heard of before. It brought back memories of a lot of shows that I forgotten, like the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts I mentioned above.

3. As demonstrated by those Young People's Concerts, the variety of what used to be shown on networks is stunning. What's most interesting about that to me is that it was just taken for granted back then that that sort of stuff would be shown on TV.

4. A few genres might have gotten slighted a bit, maybe including westerns, cartoons, and variety. I think we got most of the essential westerns, though, and I'm wondering if variety didn't really reach it's peak until just about the time things transitioned to color (Hollywood Palace). We might be a little heavy on sitcoms, but it's a sitcom website.

5. If I was going to do this again, I think I might have pushed anything that had one or maybe two seasons in black and white, then switched over to color for the bulk of its run, to the overnight slots.

6. I think we got nearly all the essentials. I think The Untouchables would be the next drama I'd pick, and Car 54, Where Are You? the next comedy.

7. Starting about halfway through, I was wondering if the schedule would exceed the character limit for a post. I'm very pleased that the whole thing fits in one post.
