I just saw an Instagram post that said that Netflix has commissioned a reboot of Mama's Family with the original set, which has supposedly been in Vicki's guest beach house since the end of the series. This is only one post, and it didn't come from either Netflix or Vicki herself.
I'm sure Vicki will update us through her site if she's actually involved in the project, and I find it sort of weird that she didn't mention the negotiations that had to be taking place long before now. She doesn't necessarily have to star in the project to be involved in it, remember. She could just have a consultant's title, and Netflix could be moving forward with an entirely new cast, especially since Vicki has speaking and nightclub dates booked well into 2017.
It seems that the only other member of the original cast that would seem to have a realistic chance to be even a guest star is Allan Kayser. Kenny Berry, Beverly Archer, and Dorothy Lyman are all either semi- or completely retired. I would guess that Carol and Betty White are too old for their original roles as well, and I'm not even sure that Carol could play Eunice facially due to her plastic surgery.
I don't really know what to make of this, especially since it could very well be that Vicki's not involved at all except for donating the set. If she's not only not in it, but not even involved behind the scenes, it really isn't Mama's Family, and this is just another example of Hollywood trying to make a fast buck off an established name instead of exploring new ideas. Even if she is involved, I have a hard time believing that this show will do anything to add to the legacy that Carol, Vicki, and the rest of the cast established. I hope I'm wrong, but it'll take a lot of convincing.
What do the rest of you think?
