View Full Version : manic depression
MyStErIoUs ChIck 04-21-2002, 01:07 AM Does anyone have manic depression? If so, do you take
meds for it? does it help?? ok, I'm asking because I think
that I might possibly have it. I'm going to the doctor next
week to find out what's wrong with me. I think it's manic
depression because I was talking to this lady on-line that
I always talk to and she has it, so judging from what I told
her...she said that it sounds like I'm going through what
she used to before she went on medication. I used to be
strongly against taking meds but I got out of the denial
stage and realized that I have a problem that needs to be
fixed, so I'm actually going to do something about it. I'm
going to consult the doc about this. My moods aren't normal.
All of a sudden I'll be really happy (almost like I'm high) and
then it's gone as quick as it comes followed by depression.
I was told that it's the warning sign of manic depression
because the extreme happiness is the manic state and then
the depression state comes into play next. It really sucks.
If any of you are going through this, I advise you to get
help because no one should have to live like this. I've felt
this way for a while, but now I'm going to see what the hell
is wrong with me. I hope everyone else will do the same if
you're having any problems.

DarleneIllyria 04-21-2002, 11:54 AM I'm glad you have the nerve to admit you have a depression problem, and going to a doctor is the next logical step. I've had depression problems over the years. It sounds pretty much like what you described. I could be so happy one second and then b******* the next hour and a half. I've admitted to myself that I have depression problems, yet I don't do anything else about it. I just try to deal with it, and that is tough. I don't know, maybe I'm embarassed to tell my parents that I have a problem. Anyway, good luck with your appointment.
Kristina 04-21-2002, 12:55 PM I used to have OCD when I was 10 and it went away with two medications when I was 12, and the medications work fast! I'm of of em now. Don't get worried if you do have manic depression because if you take your medicine everyday things will be better, but with manic depression I don't think it goes away forever. I REALLY hope you don't have it, good luck! :)
Kristina 04-21-2002, 12:56 PM BTW for those who don't know OCD is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and they gave me Luvox and Zoloft for it. Anyone ever heard of it?

Isn't that where you have to have something done a certain number of times or it just makes you scared or something?? I don't know much about it, if thats what it is.

Yes, I have heard of OCD. I am glad that the medicine was able to cure it for you.

MyStErIoUs ChIck 04-21-2002, 03:00 PM I've heard of OCD. My on-line friend has that and it didn't
go away for her. She said that she has to constantly be
doing something. I don't know; maybe I'm mistaken. she
said something about it a while back but didn't really
elaborate.

Your sort of right. For me I used to wash my hands repeatedly and I had to live a balanced life, I really don't like to talk about it nowadays, I've kind of blocked that period out of my life forever. Sometimes I would wash my hands to the point where there so wrinkled they would start to bleed and I didn't really know why I did it, it just felt like if I didn't do it thing just weren't normal. Now I think it's ridiculous I only wash my hands now after I eat something messy or my hands get dirty. By the way Mysterious Chick, some people don't find the right meds for it to go away or they don't try to control it, it is a curable disorder.
Beruche 04-21-2002, 03:40 PM Well I probably have that. According to my mother, teachers and doctors I am crazy (they say I have depression and a long list of other stuff). I have been taking medicine for awhile now for it but it hasn't been helping. Hopefully if they give you medicine it will help you. :)

DJM77 04-21-2002, 09:00 PM I have chronic depression and OCD and I have been on medicine for both since I was 11 (I'm 24 now.) I have a cousin who has manic depression.
InspectorExstead 04-21-2002, 10:11 PM i did a report on manice depression...well depression. good luck with your appointment. you gotta take the meds though unless your doc says you don't need em. cuz you get all crazy and bitchy and like it's crazy. if you ever watched the 90210 episode that delt with david becoming a manic depressive you'd understand what i'm saying. but...good luck.

haha. yeah, I know what you mean. Not because I ever
watched 90210 (ick! i've always hated that show) but I
do get all crazy and bitchy. WAY too often. I think
its going to be mandatory that I take meds, so that I
can get myself under control. Hopefully I'll get perscribed
the right stuff and live a normal life. I feel like such a
dysfunctional screwed up individual.
dawsongirl 04-21-2002, 10:43 PM Adding to the laundry list of mental disorders...
I'm not manic depressive, but I do have chronic anxiety and I can't imagine it being any better. I thought I was going crazy. I'm on medication right now (the ever lovely Paxil), but I don't think I'm on enough of it. It's has helped a little, but I'll bet if I just took what I was supposed to take, I'd be better.

I have been thought to have that. I hafta go to a physciatrist next week. I'll probably be diagnosed then...it could be Manic, could be Bi-Polar, don't know. But my doctor said I will probably be put on the ever so wonderful Prozac....joy....

Good luck, Karli. I know feeling like crap is no picnic. ;)
I have to see a psychiatrist soon too. The doc actually
asked me if I heard voices. haha. what does he think
I am? a nut?? Actually, I shouldn't say that. Some ppl
do hear voices and they can't help it. I felt like
laughing when he asked me that, but I contained
myself.

ooh..how fun. it's like those depression drugs are like ecstasy and they make you all hyper and all...lol...my mom won't take me to go see a psych. she goes "it's cuz you're not eating meat" whatever. i'll just grow up and become one of those ppl that doesn't get out of bed and i'll never get a job and i'll have to live in the street and everything next to "babe ruth" and all cuz of my mom...

Ah yes, I have had my share of the whole "hearing voices" thing, trust me. I'd hear things, but my mom wouldn't believe me...I said "Well that's ok, I'll just talk to them myself then" [i]Then she kind of got worried...but never did anything about the voices stuff. I still hear them. I know by now you all must think I'm a nutcase, but I mean they scare me...not like I want to hear them...
And good luck to you too, MyStErIoUs! [I made sure not to say your real name on here, cuz I didn't know if you wanted it revealed! ;)]
MyStErIoUs ChIck 04-26-2002, 03:56 PM Man...I dont blame you for being scared, karli. I'd feel that
way too if I heard voices. I shouldn't have made that comment
about being a nut. Although, it is kind of nutty. No offense. I'm just a "tell it like it is" kind of person. I know you can't help it
and you don't want to hear the voices. That must be extremely
frustrating. I'm sorry that you have to go through that. I'm sure
you'll get better, though. If you do have bipolar like I do
...it's a chemical imbalance that should straighten out by the
time you get to your twenties. That's what my doc said anyway.
It's good that we're getting help for our problems early because
it just gets worse and worse as ya get older. He (my doc) said
that I would probably get to the self mutilation stage or possibly
attempt suicide if Iwaited much longer. I dont know if you got to that point, but I was headed in that direction. I'm glad I know what I have now and I'm getting help for it. Bipolar is point blank
nutty in general. ::crazy:
P.S. You can reveal my name
if you desire to do so. I dont
care if anyone knows it. :D

Nah, it's ok. My friends joke qiote a bit about it. Doesn't bother me :) It's not a constant thing. I only hear things and voices when I get REALLY nervous... my school phycologyst [sp?] determined that I have an anxiety level of about 81% so, I get nervous quite a bit.
And trust me, I've been to the self mutilation stage before. Trust me. Don't go there. I know your a very smart girl and stuff, but sometimes like me, you just couldn't help it. But good luck with everything. I'll PM ya sometime and maybe we can talk. It's always good to have someone to talk to besides those shrinks, right? ;)

ok, turns out I have bipolar. Anyone else have it? Bi-Polar Disorder and Manic-Depressive Disorder are pretty much the same thing. Actually I think it might be the same thing, doctors call it Bi-Polar and we call it Manic-Depressive. My dad was diagnosed with it a few years ago, but never got meds. His Manic and Depressive states will last for several months. During his depressive state he would cheat on my mom with the same woman...it went on for 3 years b4 we found out. I think the depressive state started getting out of control and happening more often. If he had only got meds he wouldnt have f*cked up that bad. He says he is thru with all that, but still hasnt gotten meds.

Thanks for the advice, Karli. You're a very smart girl
too (especially since you're only 11 or 12...hehe...I'm
not exactly sure). I know what you mean about not
being able to help yourself in times of depression.
When someone has a chemical imbalance or disorder
(whatever you want to call it), you do some crazy stuff
and then regret it later. Anyway, sure...PM me whenever
you want. :)

Yeah, I kind of figured it was the same thing.
Just different terms. I'm sorry about your Dad.
He really should get meds because it's
not going to just go away. I thought it would
for the longest time, but I got out of denial.
Now I'm getting my problem taken care of.
Hopefully your Dad will also.
disturbed child 04-27-2002, 02:34 PM I suffer from depression as well. I am not sure what type I have, though, seeing how my mother REFUSES to accept the fact that I have a problem. I think I might have manic depression or atypical depression... I'm not sure, though. My mother is clinically depressed and she's on Proac and all of that... ugh, I need Prozac. I am so terrified though cuz I know I'll never get help and I'm going to be this miserable for the rest of my pathetic life. Karli and MyStErIoUs ChIcK, just be thankful you're getting help for your depression... mine is eventually going to kill me. Good luck you two. I'm really happy that the both of you are getting help.

awww, honey...you need to emphasize to your mom
the fact that you need help. tell her that she'd take you to
see a doc if she really cared about you. my parents refused
to accept it at first too until I went off the deep end. heh.
I dont know why but parents often fail to take their kid's
problems seriously.

Well....you know about my mom. Cos SHE, too, refused to believe I had a serious problem. I finally had to tell someone at school and they talked to her. Now she believes me. Tell someone.
