In 1969 my family was chosen to be a "Nielson Family". For the next six months we jotted down the TV shows we watched on a diary that every family member was given. Each week the diaries were sent to AC Nielson (Which provided the pre-payed mailers). When the six months were over I was a bit dismayed. Why? Yeah that's why i liked TPIR better than Sunset Beach. Your right the acting wasn't very good and the storylines/plots were ridiculous. Although i did watch that show sometimes, maybe because i wasn't hot on TPIR either. The only soap my family watches is GH, and sometimes my mom doesn't even watch that.

NBC really didn't give Sunset Beach a fair chance. They kept moving it around the schedule, didn't give it much promotion and canned it at the first chance.

They also really tried to kill Santa Barbara and Another World for years too.

For its entire run on NBC, "Sunset Beach' aired from 12pm-1pm, with the first half-hour competing against local programming on ABC and CBS and the last half-hour competing against the first half-hour of Y&R on CBS and Port Charles on ABC. TPIR of course aired at 11am.

NOW, the exception to this is that in some local markets "SB" was carried at other times due to stations airing newscasts at 12noon. In my area NBC aired "Sunset Beach" originally at 3pm where it competed against GH on ABC and GL on CBS. And then at one point they tried airing it at 2pm against OLTL and ATWT. So it is entirely possible that in some areas it aired against TPIR.

But "Sunset Beach" was not intended to be a parody. Whereas at a certain point Passions clearly was trying to be a parody. Sunset Beach was however actively trying to grab a younger audience than other soaps had. It was an experiment that ultimately did not work.

1. When ABC moved "The Partridge Family" to Saturdays allowing it to get slaughtered by "All In The Family" in its final season and killing the best Friday night lineup they've ever had. (The Brady Bunch was cancelled in the same year.)


2. When NBC cancelled ALF and replaced it on Monday nights with no-talent garbage Will Smith in "The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air".


3. When NBC gave David Letterman his own morning daytime show (before the Late Night era) and he proudly announced on the air --- as only Letterman can --- that NBC had to cancel three game shows to get him on. I have hated him ever since. The three game shows that left, if I'm not mistaken, were High Rollers with Alex Trebek, The Hollywood Squares, and Wheel Of Fortune with the original hosts Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford.

I was FURIOUS with The CW for cancelling Veronica Mars in favor of a 7th season of Gilmore Girls. I am a fan of both shows, but Veronica Mars really was cutting edge TV. Much like Twin Peaks, the general public just didn't appreciate it.

Finding out way after the fact that the original showrunners were not even involved with the 7th season of Gilmore Girls made VM's cancellation sting a bit more....

I was a big "Sunset Beach" fan too. my lineup usually was "The Price is Right", "Sunset Beach", "Days of Our Lives", and "Another World" That was in the 1997 to 1999 time period. you can substitute "Passions" for "AW" if you want. How i was i able to do that even though my NBC station was airing the local news? Since i had a dish, i could get the network feed of the soaps(at least with NBC back then)

I'll never ever forgive the WB for cancelling "Everwood" instead of bringing it to the CW. I hate the CW, but "Everwood," would have made it tolerable.

I also hated the way CBS strung along and eventually cancelled "Medium." The ending was horrible.

I don't even want to remember Season 7 of Gilmore Girls the only episode worth watching was Bon Voyage (and when Luke knocked out Christopher). Sadly to say the last ever episode of Gilmore Girls.

The new Dallas started to go into the crime show business. Didn't like how they kept messing up the backstory too. I was glad it ended.

Yes, Port Charles aired at 1230 on ABC; a notoriously difficult timeslot for ABC which had previously been home to "Loving" and "The City" and which ABC abandoned in favor of newscasts and local programming after PC was cancelled.

Sunset Beach started out OK but eventually it got really silly and stupid. Passions from day one was a parody that didn't take itself seriously, it had it's moments I suppose but it wasn't all that good either.

They had to cancel Dallas. Because J.R. Ewing being the star of and main character of the whole thing after he died, without him there just wasn't any point. I'm sure the overwhelming majority of the public lost interest in it after Larry Hagman died.

I've never watched much daytime TV since Sunset Beach and Another World were canceled and then Bob Barker retired from The Price is Right. My mom still watches GH and maybe the noon newscast on ABC, but that's it.

You know, I liked the reboot of Dallas. I thought they could have carried on after Larry Hagman's death had the rest of the cast been willing to do so. I am guessing that the original actors (Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, etc.) found it too hard to go on without Hagman.

It is really depressing to realize HOW much better actors the original cast was when compared to the new cast. I liked Jesse Metcalfe, Austin Henderson, Jordana Brewster, and Julie Gonzolo all before they were on the new Dallas. I thought they were all horrible actors, especially when put in scenes with pros like Hagman and Duffy...

I'm excited we're getting a new GG "season" on Netflix. For me, the series ended when Lorelai ended up in bed with Christopher (final moments of season 6.) I literally hated that moment with every ounce of myself. So, yes, when Luke punched Christopher, I was cheering.

I thought that Passions was REALLY stupid sometimes. like when the carnival came to town, the Prom Boat Disaster storyline and the double wedding disaster. it was stupid that it was funny. Sunset Beach got silly and stupid too, but i loved both soaps for some reason

True story: when i was starting high school, one day we were doing a test, when my teacher for some stupid reason, decided to watch Passions. It was the prom boat storyline. When one of the characters got thrown overboard the prom boat, she and i(i had finished by exam) reacted to that happening. We were shocked that someone would get thrown off the prom boat

Random, but I kinda loved how Spike from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer was OBSESSED with Passions. There's an episode where he's screaming that it's time for him to watch Passions and that "Timmy's down the bloody well and if you make me miss it....!"

The cool part about that is that I'm pretty sure Passions threw the love right back at BtVS and had Timmy/Tabitha comment about their friend "Spike." I can't find anything online confirming it, but I remember reading about it in Soap Opera Weekly.

Part of the reason Sunset Beach got so bad is that Aaron Spelling very quickly lost interest in the project after realizing how much work a daily soap was. When he stopped being actively involved in the project it was left to other producers and to NBC and it got stupid very quickly.

But i do remember one event on "Sunset Beach": the wedding where Gabi dumped her husband at the altar because Carmen blackmailed her. "Sunset Beach" was the craziest soap i've watched in terms of storylines(and it was a good alternative to "The Price Is Right" sometimes)

Quite possibly my favorite. Right up there with the knockoff Scream storyline....

quantum leap i know it ended but i didn't liked it i wish it would have lasted longer!! i heard they were going to do one or two more seaons but the net work cannclled it!!

early edition it just went off no proper ending or nothing!! then i read it ending right when reality tv series started getting popular!!

flash forward it just getting good plus they left you hanging!!

I remember the turkey baster storyline! That was off the wall nuts! But my favorite was the earthquake storyline which I think was called "Shockwave".

they seemed fine with returning without mr larry hagman,i don't like it they ended it with a cliffhanger left everyone wondering what happened,i liked the new people got all3 seasons.

I will say that any show opposite TPIR didn't have a chance. But..in 1980, The Price Is Right endured a genuine scare. ABC premiered reruns of The Love Boat opposite Price in the mornings and the first month, Boat averaged a 48 per cent share of audience, knocking Price down 20 share points. For 39 weeks, Love Boat outpointed Price until the Pacific Princess episodes began their third run. then TPIR refilled its tank and slowly jumped back into the no.1 spot in daytime.
