View Full Version : TV reruns that lose general appeal over the years
george ho 06-27-2016, 06:14 AM Let's include shows that are dated and timeless, but I'll mix them up.
Route 66 - The acting was... primitive but not early primitive. Stories are mundane and nauseating. Also, I don't care much about prominent guests., but the leads were interesting.
Becker - The leading titular character is too bitter and angry. Didn't care much about other characters.
Spin City - Political satires nowadays make real-life politics very sad.
Full House - Don't ask. Seriously.
Family Matters - Just... don't.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Great acting, writing, and storytelling. Jokes are... eh. Plus, TV stations have trouble connecting the show to current audiences.
The Cosby Show - Anyone can ask why Bill Cosby is in trouble?
Growing Pains - Watching Kirk Cameron just makes me uncomfortable.
Taxi - Good writing and cast, and good jokes. But it is too depressing anymore.
Barney Miller - Satirical police precinct series on videotape. That's exciting. Wait... who trusts police nowadays?
Friends - Watching episodes as reruns makes jokes lame and too silly. Don't care much about Ross and Rachel, Monica and Chandler, and other dramatic situations.
Everybody Loves Raymond - *shudders* A mean wife gives me the creeps.
Any police procedural series that is not Law and Order - I like courtroom dramas a lot more than Ally McBeal. But police procedural shows lose their punches, especially the 70s ones and current ones.
You can rebut what I said about the above, or you can say whichever shows you agree with me about and then decide what I did not include.
Crusinforabrusin 06-27-2016, 09:35 AM I Love Lucy- The show is great and all but it is reran ALL the time. If they would just give it a break every now and then
howilu 06-27-2016, 10:23 AM Even though I have been a fan of The Honeymooners for years, I think they lose their appeal because the 39 episodes have been rerun so much since the late 1950s.
bmasters9 06-27-2016, 01:21 PM I Love Lucy- The show is great and all but it is reran ALL the time. If they would just give it a break every now and then
It deserves one, being on DVD in full in multiple permutations (seasonal releases and two forms of a full-series release among them).
george ho 06-27-2016, 01:40 PM Agreed, and the biggest problem is that Mary just isn't that funny. I've often thought the show would have been funnier if Valerie Harper had been the lead.
She had a spinoff Rhoda. I've not watched it, but I heard it's not that appealing overall, especially since the divorce between two characters.
There was Valerie, which later became The Hogan Family. That show was very lame before and after the leading character was killed off.
megamanj2004 06-28-2016, 04:33 PM She had a spinoff Rhoda. I've not watched it, but I heard it's not that appealing overall, especially since the divorce between two characters.

Me-TV reran Rhoda about a year or two ago and it didn't last very long on there.
ABC Family tried to give Valerie/The Hogan Family 2 chances and both chances BUSTED.
Crusinforabrusin 07-08-2016, 12:51 AM Most of the Norman Lear shows also fit into the same category as I Love Lucy. Beloved shows, but rerun all the time. they need a break
Yong Fang 07-09-2016, 04:14 AM She had a spinoff Rhoda. I've not watched it, but I heard it's not that appealing overall, especially since the divorce between two characters.
There was Valerie, which later became The Hogan Family. That show was very lame before and after the leading character was killed off.
Mary was funny, and Mary Richards the character was funny in places, but her character was thee straight woman of all the other characters, the angry, borderline alcoholic boss, the idiot newsman, the sarcastic co-worker, the passive aggressive happy homemaker, then her neighbors, the cool, younger, hip upstairs neighbor, and the passive aggressive (again) landlady.......
Bob Newhart was about the same setup, except Newhart had a background as a comedian so he was funnier, but he also played it mostly straight versus his patients, Carol, and Peter Bonerz. Emily was strangely the straight woman to Bob, these two were funny together. Alex Reiger on Taxi. Andy Travis on WKRP. These were the marquis actors of the show who more or less played straight.
Rhoda the show was OK, but they married her to a guy I think most viewers disliked him. He was a jerk, and Rhoda more or less latched on to him the minute she came back to New York. Couldn't really blame CBS, marrying Rhoda off was probably a ratings bonanza.
Yong Fang 07-09-2016, 04:31 AM Becker was an OK show. It's too 1990's. Just basic CBS sitcom fare. It got into some realism. I liked the blind guy, and the weird dude who hung around the diner (what happened to him?). Wasn't horrible.
Taxi and Barney Miller were some of the best shows of all time and in my book, two of the best sitcoms coming out of ABC. Almost everyone from TAXI had a career, even an A list career after that show ended. Ask a cop, especially an older cop of which show really caught what their profession was, and most would say Barney Miller.
The Cosby Show would be syndicated forever if it weren't for Bill Cosby's crimes against those women. Cosby has been charged with a felony, and is anyone going to watch a show with a convicted rapist?
I liked Everybody Loves Raymond, but I can see why people would hate it. I think the show rang home and was a hit because it was a show about what families are really like, and having to deal with a not so nice mother in law, living across the street. Is this show in syndication?
Actually my show that will never happen (cry) would be to have Frank and Marie move into the same retirement community with Jerry Seinfeld's parents (and the other older characters, with Jerry Stiller). OMG that would have been hilarious. Imagine Frank and Morty Seinfeld, or Marie and Mrs. Seinfeld (who don't like each other)
king of comedy 07-09-2016, 07:52 AM Looking at Taxi now, I can't stand Danny Devito. SVU I just can't stand anymore. I agree with Alan Bradys' Hair. It is so grim and is so overrated.

I used to like SVU until every story involved Olivia being held hostage or as a victim. And I do agree, all the episodes are too grim.
tlc38tlc38 07-09-2016, 08:11 AM I Love Lucy- The show is great and all but it is reran ALL the time. If they would just give it a break every now and then
ILL is the ONE show that will ALWAYS be seen in reruns.
Seinfeld got old to me after seeing each episode fifty billion times. The Big Bang Theory is starting to have the same effect on me as well.
Why can't Hollywood just quit putting out crap so I don't have to cling to the few good shows until they get worn out?
bmasters9 07-09-2016, 03:00 PM Simpsons, of course, are a whole other story - as old as Seinfeld AND still in first run.
And it's been on far longer than Gunsmoke was on CBS: Gunsmoke was on from 1955-75, while The Simpsons has been on since 1990.
DJM77 07-09-2016, 03:03 PM The Simpsons has been on since 1990.
1989
bmasters9 07-09-2016, 03:07 PM 1989
That's right! I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and found out that you were right. Still, it's incredible that The Simpsons has lasted that long.
Vahan 07-10-2016, 12:23 PM The Cosby Show would be syndicated forever if it weren't for Bill Cosby's crimes against those women. Cosby has been charged with a felony, and is anyone going to watch a show with a convicted rapist?
My heart does NOT go out to any of those women accusing him of rape.
If you'd stop watching the Mainstream Media, you would know that these women have questionable backgrounds, that the media refuses to report on. Not to mention Cosby has NOT been convicted of anything yet.

If you'd stop watching the Mainstream Media, you would know that these women have questionable backgrounds, that the media refuses to report on. Not to mention Cosby has NOT been convicted of anything yet.Isn't it over 20 women now who have accused Cosby of rape? If it were just 1-3 people you might have a point but with that many the allegations are probably true.
Vahan 07-10-2016, 08:18 PM It is MY opinion, and I will not be forced to change it. There were two or three people (who will remain nameless) here who forced me to change it.
Edward216 07-11-2016, 01:02 AM Arent you contradicting yourself then Vahan? Oh well it doesn't really matter to me much.
Just because Billy Cosby has NOT yet been convicted doesn't mean he's NOT guilty of being a rapist. I'm one of those people that believes there have been way too many accusations from too many women for them not to be true. If you disagree with me about that then so be it. I know what I believe and I think the ugly truth will come out eventually.
Ed.
Vahan 07-11-2016, 01:15 AM How am I contradicting myself? I'm not.
I began to rethink my view on the Cosby situation, when I realized that I was being blinded by the pro-Feminazi, pro-SJW Mainstream Media. They took selective clips out of that deposition, to make it SEEM like he admitted to drugging and raping so many women without their consent, when he admitted to no such thing.
Oh, and Andrea Constand, the only one whose case brought an arrest warrant, is not the squeaky clean role model, that the media wants you to believe that she is.
Tubehead 07-11-2016, 01:24 AM ones for me would be:
the beverly hillbillies i enjoyed them at first then they started coming on tv all the time!!
the andy griffith show i never could get into the show! but man do they play this show to death!!
bewitched i think this show been played to death too!!
mash i never could get into this show!!! i didn't find it funny!! i guess you would have to grown up to watch it!! they play this show to death too!!
married with children i never really liked it but they did play it to death for a while!!
little house on the prairie i never could get into the show!! Nels Oleson would do something to Laura then she would get back!! i never did like the show my brother liked it a lot!!
the cobsy show i was never big fan of cobsy!! only parts i didn't like is he would turn into an kid when he was around other kids then he would make these goofy faces do these goofy things!!
bmasters9 07-11-2016, 03:51 AM little house on the prairie i never could get into the show!! Nels Oleson would do something to Laura then she would get back!! i never did like the show my brother liked it a lot!!
Same with me! It's been one of the worst shows I've ever seen.
Schmoopie 07-12-2016, 01:18 AM I love Little House on the Prairie. There are a lot of episodes I don't like but for the most part I love it and given that it's on so much in reruns to this day, it must have a following still.
visaman666 07-20-2016, 07:50 AM Even though I have been a fan of The Honeymooners for years, I think they lose their appeal because the 39 episodes have been rerun so much since the late 1950s.
That's why I only watch it on New Year's but just one episode.

Whenever WKRP would get higher ratings than Little House, one of the kids would go blind. They even spoofed that on WKRP.
george ho 07-31-2016, 06:02 PM Any other contenders? I need to keep the thread alive for a little while
30 Rock - Too self-satirizing. Also, too much Alec Baldwin. Another one of workplace clichés with straight-man character (Tina Fey) and eccentric ensemble.
Any whodunit series unless the story is told in a direct way, not a backburner.
When I said Friends, I realize I meant most of it. Seasons 4 through 7 have some hilarious episodes, including two siblings making tattletales on each other, the leading geeky guy's stupidity, the hernia plot, sarcastic references, etc.
Crusinforabrusin 07-31-2016, 06:08 PM Any Tv show can lose its appeal if reran all the time for several years. Take a look at "I Love Lucy". Premiered in 1951 and is still in syndication 65 years later. Don't you think it gets old seeing I Love Lucy? If you are going to air anything with Lucille Ball it should be "The Lucy Show" or "Here's Lucy" instead of the overplayed "I Love Lucy"
Yong Fang 08-03-2016, 05:49 AM I have said this before, but to me Danny DeVito is an inspiration. Here is this homely, five foot nothing, portly half bald guy, and how far he made it into show business and the TV show and all the movies he has been in.
Taxi was one of the best sitcoms of all time. It was a very well crafted, quality show, with very talented actors and great stories, many happy and some tragic. Louie was one of the best characters on the show.
For me it's Everybody Loves Raymond. I know it's not an older sitcom but it's been played so much that it's lost it's appeal.
Crusinforabrusin 08-03-2016, 04:03 PM Same with me! It's been one of the worst shows I've ever seen.
Little House On The Prairie is one of the best shows ever made. To each his own i guess
king of comedy 08-03-2016, 08:40 PM It was a great show.
treky 08-04-2016, 12:53 AM I Love Lucy- The show is great and all but it is reran ALL the time. If they would just give it a break every now and then
agreed!! Also MASH and ALL IN THE FAMILY.
Tubehead 08-04-2016, 01:16 AM ones for me would be:
Gilligan's Island my brother used to watch it all the time!! i kind of gotten sick of it!! how can people come on the island then leave but they can't!!
good times its ok show im kind of getting tired of the shows!! its kind of the same episodes over & over aging!!
leave it to beaver some one does something wrong then they fix the problem then every thing is happy & perfect!!
all in the family its ok who wants to watch father call his son meat head every epsidoes!!
laverne & shirley i couldn't stand this show!! i didn't like it! i did like it when they were on happy days!!
mork & mindy itso k some times i watch it
bewitched i used to watch it then i gotten tired of it!!
the andy griffith show i wish they would gave it an reast it comes on like 15 different stations!!
beverly hillbillie couldn't get into it!! i thought it was stupid!!
mash never could get into it!! i really don;t get the jokes!!
Little House On The Prairie i really don't like it!! i had to watch it after school!! it was my brothers favorite show! Nellie something to laura then they get back at each other then after they get into trouble everything is ok!!
the brandy bucnh some one does something wrong then they fix the problem then every thing is happy & perfect!!
the patty duke show its ok show!!
father knows best couldn't stand the show it kind of remind me of the brady bunch something happens some one has an problem then they fix ti then every thing is happy & perfect!!

So do I; I personally thought it is one of my favorites. I was discussing the show's appeal to general audience and all other audiences alike. As said before, it would be too depressing to audience unless they are fans of DeVito and/or Lloyd.
EDIT: Hmm... I never thought that playing a show too much is a bad thing and would risk declination on appeal/phenomenon. I guess now that more varieties of programming in syndication are needed. I still don't mind one show aired in multiple channels, but having just one channel air one show rather than multiple irks me and indicates broadcast rarity.
sandmountainslim 08-07-2016, 06:57 PM I agree with Little House on the Prairie. To me it's the worst Western ever produced.
tlc38tlc38 08-07-2016, 07:28 PM I agree with Little House on the Prairie. To me it's the worst Western ever produced.
I never have considered LHOTP a western. To me it's more of a family drama.
But if you want to consider it a western, I will for the sake of this argument....I totally disagree with you. Gunsmoke and Bonanza take the cake for WORST westerns EVER made. 2 stupid, barbaric, shows...every episode is basically about the same exact thing. On Gunsmoke, Festus is always acting like a 2 year old with a speech problem and on Bonanza, someone strange is coming on their land or one of the brothers is having women problems. And on both shows they always end up fighting in a bar...just stupid.

I would agree about Bonanza but I LOVE Gunsmoke. Festus could have whipped the whole town of Walnut Grove single-handed.
BigManMike 08-07-2016, 11:39 PM I'm sick of Bonanza and Gunsmoke being on all the time. Never cared for those shows. It sucks even more that MeTV has them and they don't crunch credits. I wish Bonanza and Gunsmoke would move to Antenna TV and they can crunch them all they want and then move some of their good shows to MeTV where they won't be crunched.

I saw the CBS condensed lot release of it at the Wal-Mart in Simpsonville for $50 before, but could never bring myself to get it. I didn't want to waste $50 on something that would very likely never be that entertaining to me.
Patty Duke 09-24-2016, 09:47 AM TV reruns that lose general appeal over the years
I think it's really a matter of personal taste with each of us. We all like or dislike different shows. I always loved Gunsmoke and Bonanza but it's been on for so long I'm just tired of watching it right now. It seems a few of the Networks air the same shows forever and forever so I get burned out on them.
I really dislike Gilligan's Island and Green Acre's, Get Smart, Hogan's Hero's...to name a few but I love Mama's Family, Father Knows Best, Donna Reed, The Walton's, Major Dad, Gomer Pyle, I Love Lucy, Reba.. Etc...
Patty Duke 09-24-2016, 12:19 PM I think we all better get used to this: with ten or a dozen retro channels now it's now becoming rare for a show not to be seen. When Ensign O'Toole and Sergeant Preston of the Yukon are getting air time, you gotta figure the real classics are going to be on permanently.
I can't get ME-TV or Antenna TV or the others, none are in my area.
I'm talking about the networks I do get like INSP, they have aired The Waltons, Little House, Bonanza etc.. forever (YEARS) and never give them a break. There are a few other channels I get that air a few old shows but again, its the same stuff over and over, they offer little variety and the same few shows are on numerous channels. TV Land has worn out Gunsmoke. There are SO many classic shows never aired, at least not on any channels I get.

Honestly most of them haven't. I watch most of them for nostalgia or because I had crushes on the women growing up. I'd never watch the vast majority of these shows if they first came on now. In fact the last sitcom I watched semi-regularly was Seinfeld.
KatieAnn 10-03-2016, 07:05 PM Whenever WKRP would get higher ratings than Little House, one of the kids would go blind. They even spoofed that on WKRP.
When did WKRP spoof that?
I watched LHOTP when I was a kid, it was dinner viewing, but now when I try to watch an episode it's so clear that Michael Landon just wants to make the audience weep over somebody being mean to a child or something terrible befalling a child or some equally tragic thing that I just realize how lame and calculated that show is. And he pretty much did the same thing with "Highway to Heaven."
Bonanza I just started watching again not too long ago and I love it, but it's been years since I saw it so it's new yet familiar, I like the family dynamic a lot. It must still have appeal if it still airs so many years later. Same goes for "Gunsmoke" even though I've never seen it. Somebody must be watching it.
I think that any show can lose appeal if you watch it too much, even a favorite. I noticed that with "Family Ties" most recently. I used to love that show but I can't watch it anymore.

Gunsmoke And Bonanza aren't the worst westerns ever because if you take a look at their ratings throughout the years , they had pretty decent number of viewers throughout the majority of their run. So Gunsmoke And Bonanza are not the worst westerns but are the best

king of comedy 11-13-2016, 08:36 AM LHOTP is completely differant.
KatieAnn 11-13-2016, 11:20 AM I read somewhere once that in a way LHOTP could be considered a continuation of BONANZA.
I wonder what way someone might see that.
Bonanza featured a rich family, 4 men, a father and three brothers (each from a different mother), land owners protecting their land, growing their businesses, taming the West.
LHOTP featured a couple with 3 young daughters, the family had very little and seemed to be close to the poverty line most of the time.
The family unit was different, the struggles were different, I never gave a thought to Bonanza when I watched LH. Charles Ingalls didn't even look like the Little Joe I remembered so not even Michael Landon had me thinking of Bonanza while watching LH and he was on Bonanza.
But I have heard that certain Bonanza scripts had been recycled and used for LHOTP.
And on a side note, because the same person scored the music for both shows sometimes I can be watching Bonanza, even very early in the series, and hear music that definitely ended up used on LHOTP. Later on in Bonanza it's pretty much exactly the same music used in the LH opening.
