I like baseball, I follow the A's but they aren't very good so it's difficult to get excited about the season being a fan of a team that usually plays like crap and flounders below .500.

The problem with the A's currently is they have a cheapskate owner who refuses to pay high salaries, so what ends up happening is their better players always eventually get traded, Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Donaldson, etc. This season, it wouldn't surprise me if Josh Reddick got traded before the trade deadline. I could see him getting traded to Baltimore, I know he'd love to play there.

So as long as the A's have this "trade em before they get too expensive" philosophy, it's obvious they aren't serious about winning or fielding a decent team. This sucks for the loyal fans who support the team.

As far as the Cubs go, their situation is completely the opposite. They now have ownership that will do whatever it takes and spend money on players to win a world series. I've thought for a while that 2016 was going to be their year (1908 + 108 = 2016.) If they stay healthy, I think they could win 120 games or more. All the pieces are in place, if they don't win it all this year they probably never will. Of course, anything can happen in the playoffs, after a long 162 game season, funny things happen sometimes in the playoffs best of 7. As of right now, Cubs look close to unstoppable. If the White Sox stay hot, maybe the Cubs will play the White Sox in the world series and the city of Chicago will go crazy. I moved from Chicago four years ago, I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

I personally don't care much about what happens in the regular season per se wins wise but I do want the Cubs to be the division champs and have home field advantage through the NL Playoffs if they get that far. Cubs can be stopped the Padres figured out how to do it. Every Cubs fan knows NOTHING is easy when it comes to the Cubs. They just need to keep the foot on the accelerator and keep doing what they do.

Can't comment on that, I didn't see the movie.

One of my favorite A's teams was the 1978 team. This was during the end of the Charlie Finley era, Finley also got cheap and traded off the teams star players, and filled the A's roster with inexperienced youngsters, giving these guys a chance to play in the major leagues. Well, the 1978 team got off to a quick 19-5 start and were the talk of baseball. Then they started losing a few but then got back to winning again, they had a 60-54 record on August 7th and still in the division race, only 3 games out. But then the wheels fell off the cart and the A's went 9-39 the rest of the way and skidded to a 69-93 finish. The A's schedule was brutal down the stretch, their last 50 games were mostly against all the top teams, which sort of explains their downfall. The '78 A's had decent pitching, but the teams weakness aside from inexperience, was defense and weak hitting, they just had a hard time competing down the stretch. But it was a fun team to watch and I still consider that season a success as the team did exceed expectations.

The '79 A's were terrible, I think that team would have lost 120 games if not for Rickey Henderson getting called up from the minors and joining the team after the all star break. With Henderson in the lineup, the A's became more competitive in August and September but still finished at 54-108.

Then came the Billy Martin/Billyball era and the A's had a resurgence for two seasons, that was fun. Three stars in the outfield with base stealer Rickey Henderson in left field, defense specialist Dwayne Murphy in center field, and Tony Armas who emerged as a power hitting right fielder.

Since the year 2000, the A's have been in the playoffs several times but only one playoff series win to show for it. I think it's a combination of bad luck, and these more recent A's teams haven't really been built to have post season success. Those teams had decent pitching and good defense, but offensively they relied too much on home runs, which might be fine in the regular season, but in the playoffs you need to be able to do the little things to win games, steal bases, sacrifice, timely hitting and not swinging for the fences all the time.

Danny Valencia! Three homers today for the A's vs. the Rays, the third one being a two run blast in the 9th inning to propel the A's to a 7-6 win. This was a big series for Valencia, he hit two homers in Friday's game so he had five homers total in the three game series.

A's head home now where they have to start playing better, they've been a better road team so far this year compared to at home.

I'm not working right now, I can afford to stay home so being up late isn't a problem. That's for you, Texas, and your stinkin' team!

Before the series, the Rangers were flapping their gums (the entire team has 4 teeth between them) about getting back at Bautista after his bat flip in the playoffs. In the first game, Texas won easily and nothing happened. It was in the second game (the 7th and final matchup of the season!) when all hell broke loose. Bautista was sliding hard into 2nd base to break up a double play---which all good baseball players are supposed to do---and Odor saw him coming so as he threw the ball toward first, he deliberately and gutlessly aimed the ball toward Bautista's head and that got both men riled up which led to "The Punch". In true Texas frontier fashion, the good guys won the game in the end and the next one as well. Somewhere along the line, the Rangers will pay and pay dearly for that punch, mark my words! It had a very distinctive Odor to it. 8 games was not long enough. I would have given him 80 games and a large slap in the mouth---with my bat!

Putting the Brewers back in the AL Central would have six teams in that division. Putting the Astros back in the NL Central would leave the AL West short a team with four teams. So one of the AL Central teams would have to be relocated to the AL West. I think the Twins would be the best choice. The Royals could also be switched to the AL West but I'd rather it be the Twins.

I was waiting for you to say something. Yep, typical New Yorkers is right. I saw it coming, I knew the A's would get rolled in this series. I was holding out some hope they would win a game, but not surprised at all with the sweep. Yanks are not a great team these days, but the A's are so bad that they make mediocre teams look like champions. A's are just a sucky team right now, can't pitch and can't hit. They have several players on the DL, but even if healthy I think the team would still suck. They lack talent, there is no winning attitude and the owner is a cheapskate. Bob Melvin is a lousy manager too. They'll play good for a few games and win a few, but it doesn't last long and they go right back to their losing ways again. They play better on the road than they do at home, for some weird reason. Looking at last years team and this years team, the only A's teams that were worse was the 1979 team, 1982 team and the 1997 team. OK, end of sermon.

I have watched baseball since the early 70s when the Expos were Canada's team before the Blue Jays existed and I know great teams and great hitters when I see them and I know that Bautista-Donaldson (MVP 2015)-Encarnacion form one of the most dangerous trios in all of baseball today. The Jays have won 10 of their last 12, heating up against tougher opponents after a slow start to the season, and I predict they will take the Red Sox 2 of 3 games this weekend. You can never say never but for now there is no chance. I keep hoping it will happen but it would take an obscene amount of money and a new ballpark that is up to modern MLB standards as well as a top-notch PR sales job from the right people at the right time to make it happen. That's too bad because it would have been great to see what it would have been like if Steven Strasburg and Bryce Harper had played there as Expos and not Nationals, and perhaps they might also have had current Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin, who is from Montreal.

I always loved when the Expos came into Chicago and when Harry Caray was announcing on the TV side and when he tried to pronounce Mark Grudzielanek's name and he NEVER could get right.

Harry Caray was nuts. He was usually sloshed, that's why he couldn't pronounce some players names. I remember when he did the White Sox games before he started working for the Cubs. In the old Comiskey Park, Caray would occasionally broadcast a game from the Center Field bleachers, he'd sit out there shirtless and drink beer while broadcasting the ballgame. Near the end of the game, he'd have a tall stack of empty beer cups beside him.

There's one Harry Caray quote I'll always remember. It was in late July 1978, and the White Sox were at home playing a 2 game series vs. Oakland. The A's were the surprise of the AL for much of the '78 season, playing well despite having a lack of star talent. Charlie Finley still owned the team, and he ran things on a shoestring budget, the '78 A's were far different from the World Series champs teams of just a few years before. Anyhow, the A's swept the two game series vs. the White Sox, and during one of the games Caray said:

"I don't know how Charlie does it. He has no scouts, no sales force, no fan support and people don't show up for the games, but he still puts together a good ballclub!"

Too bad though about those '78 A's, they stayed in the division race through about the first week of August before their collapse began. That team had a fairly decent pitching staff, but the offense was weak and their defense in the field wasn't the greatest either, which ultimately led to their downfall. But it was a fun team to watch, they really hustled but just didn't have the talent to sustain a winning record for a 162 game season.

Interesting fact: The 1977 Cubs were 47-22 after 69 games, then went 34-59 the rest of the way to finish even at 81-81. This years Cubs were also 47-22, so how will THEY finish? I think it's safe to say they won't collapse like the '77 team did, for one thing this years team has a much better pitching staff. The '77 Cubs had only one decent starting pitcher, Rick Reuschel, and two decent relief pitchers, Willie Hernandez and closer Bruce Sutter, who became a star pitcher that season. The '77 Cubs also didn't hit much for power, Bobby Murcer led the team with 27 homers, Larry Biittner was second with only 12 homers. This years team has two home run hitters, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant.

I think part of the reason for the Cubs current 4 game slide is Dexter Fowler and Jorge Soler are both currently on the DL, and Anthony Rizzo is having back problems, so this obviously hurts their offense. Kyle Schwarber's season ending injury in the 2nd game of the season was a big loss too. And I think they should have kept Starlin Castro, letting him go was a mistake.

Over the course of a 162 game season, each team is going to win and lose a minimum of 40 games. It's what they do with the other 82 games that makes or breaks the season. And it's true that having a great record during the regular season isn't always a guarantee of post season success. In 2001, Seattle won 116 games but didn't play in the world series, losing the ALCS in 5 games to the Yankees who won 95 regular season games, 21 fewer than Seattle. Chalk that upset win to the Yankees recent previous post season experience and successes, many star players on the Yankees during that time. Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, David Justice, Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens, Mariano Rivera, etc.

I've always had that as win or lose a minimum of 60, with the other 42 deciding your season. (Good team 102-60, bad team 60-102). Your way teams are going 122- 40, or 40-122, which doesn't really happen.

I've always had that as win or lose a minimum of 60, with the other 42 deciding your season. (Good team 102-60, bad team 60-102). Your way teams are going 122- 40, or 40-122, which doesn't really happen.

I prefer to look at it as a best or worst case scenario. There have been several teams that ended the season with loss or win totals in the 40's. On the positive side, Seattle went 116-46 in 2001. On the negative side, New York Mets went 40-120 in 1962. So yes it does happen. Maybe not often, but it does happen.

I'm convinced that the 1979 A's would have won only about 40 games if not for Rickey Henderson joining the team that year after the all star break. Henderson brought talent and energy to an abysmal/atrocious A's team, he alone was responsible for several of the A's wins after he joined the roster.

I was kinda worried when the Mariners won 116. I didn't want them to break the Cubs record for most wins in a season. It worked out though Lou Pinella became the Cubs manager and led them to back to back division titles.

Toronto should be able to dispose of Texas without too much trouble. Texas won 95 games, but in my opinion they aren't as good as their record indicates.

Boston has the edge over Cleveland, but don't count the Indians out I think they will give Boston a run for their money.

Chicago has the edge over San Fran, but the Giants have recent post season experience and success, winning 3 world series during that time and I think they will give the Cubs a tough challenge. Cubs have a lot of pressure on them to win and end their long post season drought, will be interesting to see how they handle the post season this time around. I also think it's interesting that Arrieta has dropped to the number 3 starter behind Lester and Hendricks. Is that a bad omen for Chicago? Could be, but we'll see.

Washington is favored over Los Angeles, but the Dodgers have been known in the past for playing tough in the post season so I expect a close series there too.

Well, Lester ended the season with a 2.44 ERA. Hendricks ended with a 2.13 ERA. And Arrieta ended with a 3.10 ERA. So yes that tells me he's lost some effectiveness. I also see that Arrieta threw 16 wild pitches during the season, that's a lot of wild pitches, could be a problem. I see now why Arrieta dropped to 3rd in the rotation. But the regular season is over, it's post season time and now it all comes down to performance.

First of all I respect the true Mr. Cub Ernie Banks. I'm satisfied with Mr. CubbyBear. (Since I am a Cubs and Bears fan) Arrieta's performance this year was not as effective as last year but still is effective. The reason why Lester and Hendricks is 1 and 2 is because they are pretty much unbeatable at home this year. Lester is 10-2 with an 1.74 ERA and Hendricks is 9-2 with 1.32 ERA. Arrieta is a better away pitcher this year going 11-3 ERA is high though with a 3.59 I'm not going to complain anyway Joe Maddon wants to do it its fine with me.

Giants had the Cubs on the ropes in the early innings of game 1 with chances to score runs, but let them off the hook. I can't believe the Giants fell for that trick pickoff play, that was stupid.

Giants offense is anemic/miserable/atrocious, no one in the lineup hits for consistent power, I'm actually surprised now that they managed a good enough record to qualify for the playoffs. This Giants team is nowhere near as dangerous as their three recent world series teams.

So after further evaluation, I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs swept the Giants in 3 games. The other three playoff series are going pretty much as I expected so far.

When I see them again in the spring it looks very likely that they'll go into the 2017 season without their twin towers, beloved franchise icons Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnation, both expected to take their talents and wallets elsewhere. I wish them the best of luck in the future with whatever team they happen to land with.

So that means my sporting focus will be almost exclusively on hockey, and specifically, the Toronto Maple Leafs and their new, exciting rookies. I'll tell you about them and the rest of the NHL on Saturday in my unofficial NHL preview post.

With games 6 and 7 of the NLCS being played in Chicago, it's very unlikely the Cubs would lose both games. I think the Cubs will finish it off in the 6th game, a 7th game won't be needed. But even if Kershaw pitches another gem in game 6 and the Dodgers win, it's most likely the Cubs win the 7th game anyway. Then I believe the Cubs will defeat the Indians in the world series in 5 or 6 games. Will see what happens.

Coco Crisp was one of my favorite players on the A's, I was mad when they traded him but I knew it was going to happen. It's too bad the A's couldn't get the job done in the playoffs during the time Coco was on the team. At least they traded him back to Cleveland and now he has the opportunity to play in another world series before he retires as a player. He's 36 now and nearing the end of his playing career.

And in the very unlikely event the Dodgers advance to the world series, they have former A's outfielder Josh Reddick and pitcher Rich Hill on the team. Joe Blanton used to pitch for the A's also. Interesting.

The Cubs have some Oakland A's connections also. Addison Russell was originally drafted by Oakland, then traded to the Cubs in one of the many dumb trades the A's have made recently. Jon Lester pitched for the A's in 2014, acquired in another dumb A's trade when they sent Cespedes to Boston in exchange for Lester. Nothing against Jon Lester, he's a good pitcher, but Lester was not what the A's needed in 2014. What they needed was Cespedes bat in the lineup. Everything fell apart for the A's after the Cespedes trade, and they've been a last place team ever since. The A's currently have the worst management and ownership in baseball, until that changes they'll continue being a last place team.

Yep I figured the Cubs would finish off the Dodgers in game 6. Kershaw looked like he would have rather been doing anything else besides pitch in that game, he looked miserable and uncomfortable on the pitchers mound.

It's interesting that the Cubs are playing the Indians in the world series, the two teams that have gone the longest time without winning a world series. Very interesting, perhaps MLB rigged it that way.

The only thing working against the Cubs now is that Cleveland has the home field advantage in the world series. But I don't think that will be a problem for them, Cubs are very capable of winning on the road. I imagine they'll split the first two games in Cleveland, then go to Chicago for three games where the Cubs will likely win at least two of them, if not all three. If Cleveland is able to win a game in Chicago, then they'll go back to Cleveland where it's nearly 100 percent certain the Cubs will finish it off.

Just like when the Royals started their surge in 2014, it was very obvious 2015 was going to be their year. It's the same thing now for the Cubs. They began their surge last year in 2015, then it became obvious 2016 would be their year. Everything is going according to script so far.

While it's unlikely the Indians will win this years world series, I wouldn't count them completely out, the Cavs weren't given much of a chance to beat the Warriors in this years NBA finals, and look what happened there. If the Indians can somehow manage to win the first two games at home, that would make things most interesting.

One player to look out for on the Indians is Mike Napoli. He's having his best season this year statistically, is a veteran/clubhouse leader and is a reason for the Indians success this year. The Cubs have talent but most of their everyday players are young, I can't say that they have a player equal to Napoli in terms of experience and leadership.

As far as next year, as of right now I think the Indians would have difficulty matching this years success. For one thing, the Royals will likely rebound next year after a flat season this year. The White Sox and Twins will likely be improved. And the Tigers as usual will probably be in the running too. So I think it's going to be a more competitive AL Central division next year, difficult for Cleveland to win 94 games again. Will just have to wait and see what happens.

Renteria might be only a slight upgrade as manager over Ventura, but I believe the White Sox will have a decent season in 2017. Not great, but decent. I think they'll be an above .500 team. This years team won 78 games, so it's not like they have so far to go. I imagine the White Sox are watching and seeing what the Cubs are doing this year, it should provide the south siders with fuel and motivation for next year. Will see what happens.

Have to give credit to the Indians, they've been the hottest team in the post season and they have a manager Francona who seems to know how to get his teams to win in the post season. But Cleveland still needs to win one more game, it isn't over yet.

I think part of the problem for the Cubs is they have some young players and this is their first experience in the world series. It's been 108 years since the team last won a world series and they are feeling the pressure to win.

And I don't think Kris Bryant should be batting 2nd in the lineup. Why Maddon has been batting him 2nd is beyond me, in my opinion your leading home run hitter has no business batting 2nd. If I was manager, after Fowler, I would bat Zobrist, then Rizzo, then Bryant. Let's see if Maddon shakes up the lineup for tomorrows game. He might as well shake it up, Cubs backs are to the wall now and the lineup he's been using is obviously not working.

I've seen it too much. The 108 years thing is old excuse. The Cubs hadn't won a pennant in 71 until this season so that's really not a reason why in my opinion. My guess is they are trying to do too much and swinging at pitches they normally didn't during the regular season. Bryant should be really batting 3rd. I like Zobrist maybe even Baez batting second then Bryant and then Rizzo cleaning up.

I would prefer to have Rizzo bat 3rd, and Bryant 4th. I have no idea why Maddon bats Bryant 2nd, makes no sense to me. He has his reasons I suppose. Maybe he will shake up the lineup next game. It looks bleak for the Cubs right now but the series is far from over, Cleveland still needs to win a game and the Cubs are fully capable of winning three straight games.

I like the Cubs chances of winning today with Lester pitching. Let's see if Maddon makes some changes to the batting order lineup. Bauer is pitching for Cleveland, and he isn't 100 percent with that bad finger he has.

If there is a 6th game, if I was the Cubs manager I would pitch Hendricks and save Arrieta for the 7th game if the series would go that far. I like Arrieta's chances vs. Kluber in a game 7 scenario, I don't think the Cubs would lose to Kluber three times in a row.

The pressure just went back on Cleveland. Cubs will play a lot more relaxed away from Wrigley. Schwarber will be back in the lineup, should be fun.

Go Cubs! I hope they win it all in memory of my dear friend Jenn, who used to post on this board as Vegi-Tari-Jenn. She absolutely LOVED the Cubs!

Too bad the Cubs aren't playing the Los Angeles Angels in the Series. I also have a few "Touched By An Angel" lines.

Well you have Kluber going again. Cubs haven't solved him yet. However I think the Cubs are ready for him this time around kind of like when they faced Kershaw in the NLCS the 2nd time.

Well, it's come down to a Game 7-- someone's going to take the title and end the drought, and I hope it's the Cubs.

If either team wins by one run, I will say...

BOTH teams played well!...and I'm sure the Cubs and Indians may have the same players for 2017....

Normally stoic commentator George Will is on Fox News getting very emotional.

Nordy, I am so happy for you.

Paul and Bonnie, better luck next year.

This is the most baseball I have ever seen in my life, it was fun.

Except for the city of Cleveland, and a few disgruntled White Sox fans grumbling in their basement, everyone seems pretty happy with the result.

It might as well rain only in Cleveland...wait...it did!

And in the words of Casey at the Bat...

Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children
shout,
But there is no joy in Cleveland—the Indians have struck out.

69 years...
