I don't get it either. They should be happy a Chicago team won.

From what I understand being a Cubs fan and baseball fan in general. Chicago White Sox fans think the Cubs are big brother. Always trying to beat them but never do. Like I have told people I didn't root for the Sox in their World Series year of '05 but I didn't root against them either. They expected the Cubs fans to root for them but don't return the favor this year. Which is fine...enjoy the party!!

It looks bleak for the Cubs right now but the series is far from over, Cleveland still needs to win a game and the Cubs are fully capable of winning three straight games.

Yep I figured the Cubs would come back from down 3 games to 1 and win the series, I'm not surprised at all. It was already obvious last year in 2015 that 2016 was going to be the Cubs year, I've never seen anything more predictable. The Cubs have owners and management now that doesn't mess around, they are going to keep doing whatever is necessary to continue having winning teams. Unless there are injuries to key players, they are going to have a dynasty now and will be in the world series several more times, this isn't just a one time thing for them.

The Cubs won 103 games this year without Schwarber, he basically missed the whole season, they might win 110 games or more next season assuming Schwarber is healthy and plays the full season. That guy can flat out hit the baseball. And on the subject of Schwarber, since he basically missed the entire season due to his injury, I don't think he should have been allowed to play in the world series this year. Didn't seem fair to me but I don't make the rules.

Regarding the Indians, will have to see how the 2017 season unfolds but I don't think they will make it back to the world series next year, a different AL team will make it to the series. The Indians opportunity to win was this year, but nothing was going to stop the Cubs. Napoli had a terrible world series, he's a big reason why Cleveland lost the series, he was a huge disappointment.

Well... there's one thing I have to say about game 6...

http://classrealm.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/mario-game-over.jpg

Looks like it'll be 69 for the Tribe...

What was up with that play in the 1st inning of game 6 when the Indians outfielders let the ball drop in front of them? Neither one acted like they wanted to catch the baseball, that was ridiculous.

And in game 7 when the umpires held the game up before the 10th inning started because of the rain. That wasn't necessary, it wasn't raining that hard and it didn't rain for long, they could have played through that rain. Maybe the umps held the game up for a half hour to mess with the rhythm of the Indians pitcher, making it easier for the Cubs to hit him around and score some runs. Look what happened, it worked like a charm.

The Indians needed to sweep the 3 games in Chicago, that was their only chance. When they lost game 5 and the series went back to Cleveland, it was over for them right there. Nothing was going to stop the Cubs at that point, playing games 6 and 7 on Cleveland's home field gave no advantage to the Indians. In fact, the home team won only two times during the seven game series.

Cleveland Indians win record-setting 15th straight with 11-2 thumping of Chicago White Sox

Updated on September 8, 2017 at 10:48 AM Posted on September 7, 2017 at 11:12 PM

CHICAGO - Do the Indians really have to go home? They've had so much fun on the road. Can't they live out of their suitcases for a couple of more days?

Thursday night the Indians beat the White Sox, 11-2, for a franchise record 15 straight wins. The last 11 of those victories came on the road. Those 11 wins include sweeps of the Yankees (three games), Tigers (four games) and White Sox (four games).

As for as roadies go, according to Elias Sports Bureau, it's just the fifth time in history that a team has gone undefeated on a trip of 11 or more games. The 1953 Yankees had a 14-0 trip.

Think about this for a minute. The Indians won their 14th straight game on Wednesday night and who did they have going for No.15 on Thursday night? Just one of the best pitchers in baseball - Corey Kluber.

How well do you think manager Terry Francona slept Wednesday night?

Kluber (15-4, 2.56) allowed two homers in the first inning before sticking it into overdrive. After Jose Abreu's homer cut the Tribe's 4-0 lead in half with one out in the first, Kluber retired 20 of the last 22 batters he faced.

In seven innings, Kluber allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out 13 and walked one. It was Kluber's 14th game with 10 or more strikeouts this season. Boston's Chris Sale, who has 17 such games, is the only pitcher in the big leagues with more.

The 14 double-digit strikeout games are the second most by an Indians pitcher in one season. Sudden Sam McDowell had 17 in 1965.

As for what changed after the first inning, Kluber said, "We just adjusted to their approach. It felt like they were swinging at every pitch that looked like a fastball hoping to run into one. We went to more off speed and it took them a while to make the adjustment."

If a team wins 15 straight games, they're not only talented, but lucky. And sometimes they're fortunate.

The Indians were fortunate Thursday when scheduled starter Carlos Rodon came down with a stiff shoulder and was scratched just before game time. The White Sox were forced to start veteran Mike Pelfrey, who had pitched 2 1/3 innings on Tuesday night. Rodon, on the other hand, is 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in his career against the Tribe.

"We saw him a couple of days ago so we knew what he threw," said shortstop Francisco Lindor.

The late pitching changed caused some chaos in the Tribe locker room as Bradley Zimmer replaced Greg Allen in center field and Lonnie Chisenhall replaced Brandon Guyer in right. Chisenhall, for instance, was on the bench drinking coffee when he found out he was starting. Zimmer, meanwhile, was sitting at a clubhouse table eating when he got the word. And bench coach Brad Mills, the keeper in the lineup card, had packed the printed for the trip back to Cleveland.

"I found out about two minutes before game time," said Zimmer. "I was just trying to digest. I had to get ready."

The unease did not last long as the Indians hit for the cycle in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Lindor opened with a triple and scored on Austin Jackson's double. After Yandy Diaz walked, Edwin Encarnacion hit a line drive homer over the left field fence to make it 4-0.

It was Encarnacion's 33rd homer of the season.

The cycle completing single belonged to Chisenhall, who looked none the worse for his short-notice start.

Things looked so bad for Pelfrey (3-11, 5.51) and the White Sox that catcher Rob Brantly was warming in the second inning. That fact that he didn't take the mound until the ninth inning was a moral victory for the White Sox.

The Indians finished the game with five homers among their 16 hits. Lindor, who fell a double short of the cycle, Allen and Erik Gonzalez joined Encarnaction with homers. It was Allen's first homer in the big leagues and it was Gonzalez's first two-homer game.

Gonzalez's second homer came against Brantly in the ninth. He had no intention of giving it back because it came off a catcher.

As for why the Indians just finished an 11-0 trip and are 48-27 on the road, Gonzalez said, "It's because we attack right away. We score early."

Gonzalez has been paying attention. The Indians ouscored the opposition in the first three innings on on this 11-game trip, 32-10.

What it means

The Indians have won 19 of their last 21 road games. During the 15-game winning streak, they've outscored the opposition, 109-28

The pitches

Kluber threw 96 pitchers, 67 (70 percent) for strikes. Pelfrey threw 96 pitches, 56 (58 percent) for strikes.

Ouch

Diaz left the game in the sixth inning after getting hit by a pitch in the sixth inning. Giovanny Urshela replaced him first as a pinch-runner and then at third base.

Thanks for coming

The Indians and White Sox drew 17,019 fans to Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday night. First pitch was at 8:10 p.m. with a temperature of 66 degrees.

The four-game series drew 59,621.

Next

The Indians open a three-game series this weekend against the Orioles at Progressive Field. Right-hander Mike Clevinger (8-5, 3.50) will open the series against the Orioles. The Orioles will counter with left-hander Wade Miley (8-11, 4.91) in the 7:10 p.m. start. SportsTime Ohio, WTAM and WMMS will carry the game.

When the Cubs were scuffling during the seasons first half and struggling to play .500 ball, I figured that they would step on the gas in the 2nd half and end up with about 90 wins. They won 92 games, so I was pretty much on track.

If the NLCS comes down to Cubs vs. Dodgers, I think the Cubs have a good chance to win that series, it doesn't matter that the Dodgers won 104 games and the Cubs won 92. The Cubs have the type of team that all they have to do is qualify for the playoffs, the number of wins doesn't matter, now that it's the post season they'll be very dangerous.

Well the Dodgers meant business tonight, jumped out to a big lead early and it was lights out for Chicago. No world series for the Cubs this year. Make a few tweaks to the roster and they will probably be in the running again next year.

Are the Cleveland Indians planning on working their roster too? I have no doubt they are...

I imagine that the Indians will be making some roster moves. All baseball teams shuffle their rosters during the off season.

Jake Arrieta is going to be a free agent. Will be interesting to see if he decides to leave the Cubs and go elsewhere. As an A's fan, I'd like to see Arrieta in an A's uniform, I think Arrieta would fit right in with the A's and he would bolster their starting pitching staff, but whether the A's would be interested in signing him, I don't know.

With the 22 wins the Cleveland Indians had... some players may want to play on the Indians.

Cleveland is #19 in the media market yet is under the top-50 in American cities...also the RNC did help a little with people bringing business here...but it is odd that the top-4 biggest American cities are/were in the A/NLCS games...

1-New York (Damn Yankees)
2-Los Angeles (Dodgers... won't doubt they'll win it all)
3-Chicago (Cubs... let's hope it isn't another 108 years for them to win it all)
4-Houston (Astros...why have they dropped games like the Cleveland Indians)?

Maybe. Billy Beane is a genius after all. Well, not in the baseball sense (he's never really won anything), but who else could never win AND STILL get Brad Pitt to play him in the movie?

I don't think Billy Beane is a genius, but I think he does the best he can with the small market A's and their financial limitations.

From 2000 to 2003, the A's had some really good teams and the intention then was to win a championship, but unfortunately those teams had misfortune in the playoffs. But that was 15 years ago. The problem now is that the A's are so tight budgeted and they trade off their better players before they become too expensive to keep. They get prospects in return and if these prospects develop into top line players, they too get traded before they get too expensive in exchange for more prospects. So the A's just keep spinning their wheels, the roster is always being shuffled with a revolving door of players coming in and moving out. As long as the A's have this philosophy, I don't see them being serious contenders unless they get lucky where everything falls into place and they have a magical year.

The A's have some young talent on the team now, they finished the 2017 season on the upswing so maybe they can do even better next year. They could use a quality starting pitcher to improve the pitching staff, that's why I suggested Arrieta since he's going to be a free agent. I don't know what the A's plan to do or which free agents they can afford, will just have to see what happens during the off season.

Well the Yanks put up a good fight but they were unable to win a game in Houston.

So it's going to be Astros vs. Dodgers, both teams were 100 game winners during the season, should be a good series. Edge has to go to the Dodgers but the series could go either way.

Yeah, even though I was rooting for the Dodgers, congrats to the Astros !!;) After that terrible Hurricane they had, it's nice that something good came their way.:) And it was a good run. Went all the way to game 7, so it wasn't so bad for the Dodgers!;)

Astros or Dodgers, I dislike both, I'm not a fan of either team. However, I had the feeling that Houston would win the series because of the hurricane and flooding rain they had there. MLB gave them a sympathy win. They made it look good and dragged out the series to a full 7 games, but that 7th game was ridiculous.

Darvish got hammered in game 3, so the Dodgers manager starts Darvish instead of the staff ace Kershaw in game 7 so Darvish can get hammered again, and after Houston predictably jumped out to a quick lead, he then brings Kershaw in to pitch and by that time it was already too late. Sounds to me like the fix was in.

Something's definitely brewing out in Oakland these days.

It's been a nice ride so far this season but I'm very skeptical.

Since the year 2000, A's have been in the playoffs several times but have won only one playoff series during that time. So if they manage to qualify for the playoffs this year, chances are they will probably lose again. If they fail again this time around, 2019 might be their year if they can build on the success they've been having this year.

I've followed the A's since 1977, and they have an up and down pattern of having a few losing years, then they come back and have some winning seasons.

For example:

1977 to 79- losing seasons.
1980 to 81- winning seasons, Billyball years.
1982 to 86- losing seasons.
1987 to 92- winning seasons, world series champs in 1989.
1993 to 98- losing seasons.
1999 to 2006- mostly winning seasons if I recall correctly.
2007 to 11- losing seasons.
2012 to 14- winning seasons.
2015 to 17- losing seasons.
2018- winning season.

True, but I can only speak to the moment, and coming back from 12 games back on June 18 to currently being tied for the division lead is impressive (although right now they’re down 6-4 in the 7th, which if it holds would put them a game back. Still impressive though)

What they've been able to do so far is impressive, but of course today they choked away a golden chance to take over first place, which tells me this team is no where near ready yet for the big time. Maybe next year but not this year.

This years A's are like the 2015 Cubs. The Cubs in 2015 had a great year, won 97 games, but at the time I thought they were still a year away, I was correct because they lost in the playoffs but were champs in 2016. I think this years A's are still a year away. Maybe in 2019 they can win it all if things go their way.

I've mentioned this before, but one of my favorite A's teams was the 1978 team. They were the surprise of baseball for a large part of the season, having a respectable 61-56 record before collapsing down the stretch, going 8-37 the rest of the way to wind up at 69-93. I think that team should have been able to finish at least close to .500, I was dismayed at how poorly they finished that season. There were a few factors which I believe contributed to the collapse:

Over the last seven weeks of the season, the A's had a brutal schedule, most games vs. the top teams in the East and West. They had a few games vs. the White Sox and Twins but the rest of the schedule down the stretch was vs. all the top teams.

Secondly, in 1978 Charlie Finley still owned the A's, he ran the team on a shoestring budget, he was not a popular owner in Oakland and not many fans would show up for the home games. I think after awhile the players got tired of seeing empty seats in the stadium and lost their motivation to win the ball games.

Also, Jack McKeon was the A's manager in '78 and I often didn't agree how he managed the team. The '78 A's had a speedster/base stealer playing center field, Miguel Dilone, but McKeon would usually bat Dilone 8th instead of lead off, second baseman Mike Edwards would usually lead off. I think McKeon did this because Edwards had a higher batting average, but I believe Dilone would have had a higher batting average if he batted lead off consistently instead of being mired in the 8th spot. Dilone stole 50 bases that year and was among the league leaders in steals. I think Dilone should have batted lead off and Edwards bat second.

The A's main weakness in '78 was probably that they weren't really a great defensive team. And they didn't hit much for power either, Dave Revering and Mitchell Page had double figures in home runs but that was about it. Charlie Finley traded for Rico Carty later in the season to help in home run department but it was already too late. The A's did have decent pitching in '78, starters and relievers usually pitched well and that was the teams main strength.

Well that is probably more than you or anyone wants to know about the 1978 A's, they are probably my favorite A's team so I enjoy talking about them. Other A's teams have done better but to me the '78 team was a special group. And to think the A's very nearly moved to Denver prior to the 1978 season but at the last moment the deal fell through.

Anything is still possible, but after what happened today I think Houston will go on and win the division. A's will have to settle for the wild card if they can stay ahead of Seattle. Maybe the one game playoff will be A's vs. Yankees. That would be interesting.

Yankees could still pass Boston, there are still enough games left including six head to head matchups so the division race is far from over.

Over the next 10 games might determine if the A's are really contenders or merely pretenders because their next three series are vs. Houston, Seattle, and New York. So it's time to man up and continue winning otherwise Seattle might pass them in the standings.

The A's have a strange pitching staff this year, patchwork rotation, starters have had injury problems, now Sean Manaea is on the DL. But they are loaded with relievers. Far different from the 1980 Billyball team where the starters pitched 94 complete games.

These next 10 games for the A's will show what they are made of. Hopefully they won't put the choke collar on but will see what happens.

The Cubs signed Daniel Murphy, they have owners now who don't mess around, they will do anything and sign any available player if they think it helps the team. A far different philosophy from when the Wrigley's owned the team where fielding a winning team wasn't usually a priority.

Call them the Chokeland A's, last night's game was another example why this team is nowhere near ready yet for the big time. Choking away a 4-0 lead, then end up losing 11-4 to those miserable Houston A**holes, it's too soon to go into panic mode but something tells me that the next 9 games in this crucial 10 game stretch aren't going to go very well either. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Seattle passes them in the standings and takes the 2nd wild card spot.

Move the Houston A**holes back to the NL Central where they belong. And move Milwaukee back to the AL Central where they belong. Then move Kansas City from the AL Central to the AL West. Another thing I would do is move Atlanta to the NL Central and move Pittsburgh to the NL East. The NL West and AL East would remain unchanged. The six divisions would then look like this:

NL EAST
Miami
NY Mets
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Washington

NL CENTRAL
Atlanta
Chi. Cubs
Cincinnati
Houston
St. Louis

NL WEST
Arizona
Colorado
LA Dodgers
San Diego
San Francisco

AL EAST
Boston
Baltimore
NY Yankees
Tampa Bay
Toronto

AL CENTRAL
Chi. White Sox
Cleveland
Detroit
Milwaukee
Minnesota

AL WEST
Kansas City
LA Angels
Oakland
Seattle
Texas

That looks much better to me, I think that's how it should be. I've always hated it that Milwaukee was moved to the NL and Houston to the AL. It's ridiculous.

New York 8 1/2 games behind Boston now, probably tough to catch them at this point, New York might have to settle for the wild card and one game playoff.

And the Chokeland A's continue doing what they do best, choking away ball games at the time when they need to win them most, losing 3 of the first 4 games in this important 10 game stretch. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up losing this current series to Seattle, then lose the next series to New York also.

Maybe the world series this year will be Cubs vs. Red Sox. It's starting to appear that way.

1960'sTVfan
09-06-2018, 10:04 AM
Well the Chokeland A's didn't do quite as bad as I thought they would during the 10 game stretch, splitting the games, going 5-5, I had feared they might go 3-7 or even 2-8. Last night's win vs. New York was one of those nice, stress free games, jump out to a comfy lead early while the starting pitcher shuts down the opposition, fun game to watch, no stress.

But I'll still call them the Chokeland A's until they win another world series, it's been 29 years since they've been world series champions which is far too long and the time is way overdue that they win another one. Their recent post season history, since the year 2000, has been terrible. Maybe this group of players will be different, time will tell. I still think the A's are a year away, 2018 will probably be another non championship year but maybe 2019 if they can build on the success they've had this year.

I see the Chokeland A's choked again, Houston and New York didn't play yesterday so the A's had a golden chance to gain a little ground on both teams, all they had to do was defeat the hapless Orioles, but of course they choked away the game and lost it 5-3. This was a real bad game to lose.

The A's have this uncanny ability to lose the huge, crucial games, this has been their recent history, that's why since the year 2000 they have such a miserable post season record in the years they've been in the playoffs.

Even going back to 1988, 89, and 90 when the A's were in the world series, the only time they won it was in 1989, they choked in '88 vs. the Dodgers and choked in '90 vs. the Reds, and in the '92 AL playoffs they choked vs. the Blue Jays.

The A's should have finished the regular season yesterday with a win, but no they had to choke the game away and lose it in the 9th inning. Bad way to finish the season. I can understand A's manager Bob Melvin not wanting to use regular closer Blake Treinen in the game yesterday and save him for the playoffs, but he should have brought in Ryan Dull to finish that game yesterday, I imagine Dull would have closed it out, but instead Melvin brings in Chris Hatcher who is a choker and shouldn't even be pitching in the major leagues. Nice move, Melvin.

So now the A's have to enter the wild card game after a bad loss, might not sound like a big deal but it is a big deal. 99.9 percent chance the Yanks will win the game on Wednesday. That leaves a .1 percent chance for the A's to surprise and pull off the win.

The Brewers might be a team to look out for, took the division today winning the game in Chicago. Now the Cubs have to play again tomorrow in the wild card game, probably vs. Colorado. Will watch the game tomorrow and see if the Cubbies have anything left in the tank. Could be the Cubs are deflated after losing today.

Ok, Dodgers survived a couple of solo homers, so we officially have Rockies-Cubs. You can never assume anything in one game, but at Chicago, the Rockies traveling tonight, and the Cubs having a rested Lester ready, I’ll give the edge to Chicago.

Double nightmare for the Cubbies, losing twice at home in games with playoff implications, first losing to the Brewers in the division deciding game and then to the Rockies in the wild card game.

I sort of had the feeling this was going to happen because the Cubs were fading down the stretch, one of their problems was shortstop Addison Russell not being with the team because of personal problems, I imagine that was a distraction. Kris Bryant had an off year because of injury problems. And I think the Cubs should have kept Jake Arrieta instead of letting him go to the Phillies, Arrieta was the Cubs most important starting pitcher, even more important than Jon Lester. Arrieta's stats/numbers aren't as good as what they were in 2015 & 16, but I still think the Cubs should have kept him.

Cubbies will probably bounce back but in the event they don't they'll always have 2016 to look back on so I don't feel bad for them.

Today it's A's vs. Yanks in the AL wild card, I expect New York to win this game but will see what happens. The A's problem is they have no starting pitching, they use the bullpen strategy which I doubt will succeed in the playoffs. Even if they manage to get past New York, they would then go on to play Boston in a 5 game series and I doubt they would win vs. Boston.

Well they are still the sucky Chokeland A's, as soon as Judge hit the two run homer in the 1st inning, I immediately knew the game was over.

I figured 2018 wasn't going to be the A's year anyway, they are like the 2015 Cubs, still a year away. But for next year the A's need to have a healthy starting pitching staff otherwise they will fail again in 2019, no more of this stupid bullpen strategy, it doesn't work, especially in the playoffs vs. top quality teams.

And there's a lot of room for improvement with the A's hitting, they need to learn how to excel vs. good pitching otherwise they'll just continue being a team of chokers and completely incapable of winning important games. The way they batted tonight vs. New York was absolutely atrocious, they looked like a minor league team, it was disgusting. This is a 97 win team, they looked like a 97 loss team instead.

Alright that's enough of baseball, I might watch the world series games but it depends on what the teams are. If it ends up being Brewers or Rockies vs. the Indians I might watch, otherwise no I won't watch. Time now to get ready for hockey and basketball season.

Will have to see how the Indians do in 2019. In the NFL, the Browns seem to be on the path to being a respectable team again.

Part of the A's problem, aside from needing a decent and healthy starting pitching rotation, is that they need to start being a smarter hitting team, they swing for the fences too often. Home runs are great, the A's hit 227 HR's this year, but they have to be able to play "small ball" as well. In the playoffs, the teams that do the little things best are usually the ones that succeed. The A's strategy has been, get a couple guys on base then swing for the fences. This strategy might be good enough for the regular season, but not in the playoffs when you're facing the best teams and better pitchers that don't usually allow many home runs. This could be a reason why the A's have looked so miserable lately in the post season. A smarter approach to hitting, less focus on hitting homers and maybe their fortunes would change. Let Khris Davis be the home run guy while the rest of the team focuses more on hitting for average and driving in runs with singles and extra base hits. Go with what the pitcher gives you. For example, a two strike fastball on the outside part of the plate smacked to the opposite field for a hit is a lot better than taking a futile home run swing and hitting a harmless pop fly or striking out.

When I first started following the A's in 1977, Joe Rudi had left the A's and signed with the Angels. However, Rudi returned to the A's for one season in 1982 and finished his career in an A's uniform.

1982 was not a good year for the A's, pitching staff was ineffective and the team lost 94 games. 1982 was the end of the Billyball era as Billy Martin was dismissed after the end of the season.

I think Bob Melvin made a mistake by starting Sean Manaea in the wild card game, I believe Fiers should have been given the start. Don't know if it would have made a difference, at this point it's speculation, all I know is that I cringed when I found out Manaea was going to be the starting pitcher. Bob Melvin is not a very good manager, the A's should have let him go and offer the job to Maddon after it became known Maddon wasn't staying with the Cubs. I've come to believe that the people running the A's are not serious about fielding a championship team. All they want to do is field a team that's good enough to compete and make the playoffs a fair amount of the time, but that's it. Having success in the playoffs isn't a priority, which explains the A's futile playoff history over the past 20 years. The A's will continue being pretenders and not contenders unless there's a change in philosophy and priority.
