View Full Version : The Official Retirement Show Thread! All shows included!
Anna Karenina 04-20-2016, 04:46 PM The first one airs today.
I think it was the best one.
Random thoughts.
Julie was filled out more than usual.
Nedra Volz is a treasure.
The really old guy didn't get his All Bran this morning.:)

I've written before I think Elton and Kiki were more for the home audience then the in show audience (the old people). Would they really know who Elton and Kiki were and like that kind of music?
The "really old guy", if it's the one I think you mean, also has a WKRP connection. He was Ferryman in the episode they sung the funeral home jingle.

Julie had one of her prettiest moments playing Kiki Dee !! ;)

mets82 04-21-2016, 12:55 AM I will be Debbie Downer but I didn't like any of the Retirement shows. I'm not a big fan of when shows do burlesque, musical or variety episodes. To me, there never funny.
Anna Karenina 04-21-2016, 10:34 AM My mom and I were watching, BonnieG and she agreed that Julie looked her prettiest here.
Val for all her numerous charms couldn't really sing very well. Mack on the other hand had a lovely voice.
What Val did have in these shows was great comic timing on par with Nanette Fabray. Her Elton John was hilarious.

He's the man with the plot, the man with the plan!

I can see where you are coming from because depending on my mood I can find these show either hilarious or just plain amateurish.
Duke of Earl as much as I love me some Scarpelli, was pretty painful no matter what mood I am currently in. The costumes were funny, though.
And how ironic that Boyd Gaines got so little to do given how many Tony's he eventually won including one for Best Supporting Actor in a musical for Herbie in Gypsy.

I haven't seen any of these ODAAT eps yet, but as many sitcoms stars also have dancing and singing training and/or talent, we're frequently given sitcom episodes where they get to show off. Other examples are Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Facts of Life, Designing Women (though this was more of Dixie's payback for spouting liberal ideas, as I've heard) and the britcom Are You Being Served?
I agree; sometimes I like these episodes, sometimes I groan and think, hey, you're paid to be funny, so be funny! As I have little to no musical talent, some
of my reaction may also be based on jealousy.
Now I SO wanna see my made-me-realize-I'm-gay crush Glenn do his turn!

You can easily trace the lineage of these type of episodes back to I Love Lucy.

He did a 50's number. He and Schneider ,Max and Mark were dressed as 50's greaser, doo wop style singers . Alex was the lead singer and the men were the backups like 50's singing groups were back than. They sang Duke of Earl! It was cute! :)

I can't wait to see this! Was this season 6, 7,or 8? Just wondering how long I'll have to wait, as the Antenna TV rerun cycle is currently in season 2 (not that I'm not enjoying these, but no Glenn :( )

OMG thank you. Alex was adorable. I liked his fall into Auntie Francine's arms in the finale.
Overall, it was an interesting but strange viewing experience. At least I Love Lucy had a plausible reason for their musical excursions. Why people would think that advertising agents, writers, flight attendants, dentists, grandmas, superintendents, and high school students would make for excellent talent show fodder is anyone's guess...aside from the ODAAT regulars wanting to do something different.

I know, really! ;) And they were able to put something together really quickly! For people ,like you said who were supposed to be everyday people not showbiz folks!:D
Anna Karenina 04-26-2016, 11:13 PM Alex Cooper,
All I can say is that no matter the circumstance I enjoy these actors unleashing their inner ham.
One has to wonder if Emily and Orville could have been featured in a non retirement show episode with another theme.
Perhaps their wedding? Perhaps, God forbid, one of them could die like the platonic elderly couple featured in A Very Special Mr. Belvedere. (Spoiler Alert, it was kind of a two for one.):violin:
How about having E and O get up on stage and sing a song themselves or with fellow senior Katherine? Mix things up a bit!
I am a huge fan of Nedra Volz, she lit up any sitcom she was in. I wish she had been featured more prominently in the show.

I don't understand. Who are you talking about?
Anna Karenina 04-27-2016, 04:23 PM Okay, here goes. From my memory. This is not a show I am an expert on so bear with me.
Mr. Belvedere had their own retirement sub plot where little Wesley and his sister Heather and her vapid but sweet friend Angela would visit the elderly residents in a home.
It seems that there was a grumpy guy named Mr. Sparks who had a platonic old female friend who suddenly died. He was very upset by this but he was emotionally unavailable and wasn't able to convey is mourning to the well meaning girls and told them to back off and leave him alone.
Somehow they get him to go to open up a bit and he tells them how much he loved Atlantic City and they break him out of the nursing home and drive him there. He has happy flashbacks of his youth while sitting on a bench and dies very happily with a smile on his face.
In case I got any of the details wrong (its been awhile since I have seen this) here are parts one and two on youtube. I hope it posts, if not the episodes are called The Trip. Parts 1 and 2.

Remember, she also got to do some work on the show, tho not as Emily of course, when Ann and Mom had the heart to heart in the restaurant.
Anna Karenina 04-27-2016, 05:21 PM How could I have forgotten that?
Of course!
And that is actually one of my favorite episodes!
mets82 04-27-2016, 10:38 PM Oh, I remember the episode. I just don't know why it was special.

My post came off snarkier than intended. Depending on my mood, I often enjoy the "Hey, let's put on a show!" episodes of any sitcom.
I have to admit too that I fast forwarded on YouTube to the Alex part. I enjoyed Nedra on "Diff'rent Strokes" and I'm sure she was a highlight here too.
Anna Karenina 04-28-2016, 10:13 PM Alex Cooper, your posts are always great.
I guess we two are the biggest Glenn Scarpelli fans on this board. He is adorable. He always answers my tweets!

Thank you, Anna Karenina and Bonniegirl, for making a relative newcomer feel very welcomed. You two and opus I find especially awesome, and I enjoy reading your posts and thoughts too.
I'm not a big social media fan, but if Glenn is on Twitter, I'll look him up. Thank you Anna. I first realized my crush on him in fourth or fifth grade, though I don't think I quite understood what having a crush on another guy meant. He was and is so adorable!

Sometimes I feel guilty for not following Valerie Bertinelli, but since I don't use Twitter or follow anyone, I'm hoping if she's reading this she'll understand.

I know this is straying from the original thread discussion, but some questions for Anna: how old were you when you first discovered your Glenn crush, and did you share it with anyone? I was in grade school and I remember telling a male friend, who was a little surprised but not judgmental. This was the '80s.

AC, AK wants you to know that I am a few years younger than Glenn but I remember being a pre teen girl when he first came on the show and thinking, "Who is this cutie?" I was so happy that they brought a kid closer to my age into the fold. I had no gaydar back then so I had no idea about him other than that he was just adorable.:) I also thought he had great comic timing.
It must have been difficult for kids like you and Glenn to have to conceal something that is perfectly normal. I have several nieces and nephews but 2 of them are gay and one of them is engaged to her girlfriend. This came as quite a shock to her conservative religious parents and their mother, my sister who is a wonderful woman still has a hard time dealing with the reality of the situation unfortunately.
I am hoping in time she will get past her reservations and be more comfortable with the whole thing. It seems like their father is far more accepting so I am hoping she will follow suit.
I think its wonderful that times have finally changed for the most part and that we have marriage equality. Love wins!

Hi Anna
If I'm remembering correctly, Julie isn't involved in the show? She is spending the New Years holiday with her dad, Ed ,instead of with her new husband! That makes sense !  :D
Mack was messing up bad at this point I guess, I bet back than Michael was thinking Oh boy ,am I going to be written out of the show soon? Out of a job? :(
Bonniegirl 06-14-2016, 12:47 PM To all who watched yesterday, what were your thoughts? Refresh my memory ! Was I right about Julie not participating and that she was supposed to be with Ed? If so wouldn't it really have made more sense to have Max go with her to visit her Dad? Or not go at all? They were newlyweds and it was New Years right?

You remember correctly. She was "in Colorado skiing with Dad".
Two other comments
-Schneider and Beerbelly met two waitresses they were going to take to the cabin? So much for the happily married Beerbelly.
-In what bizzaro universe is Elliot the only date Barbara can get for New Years Eve?

What if Julie ditched Dad at the ski lodge and met a guy, fell in love and decided to divorce Max? :(
My Beer Belly was cheating on me? Bad enough when I thought he was married, after all I was the "other woman" than! But to find out he is single and cheating on me with a waitress? I'm really hurt! :(
Anna Karenina 06-14-2016, 05:05 PM Bonnie should have been given the opportunity to show off her real life singing and dancing talent.
As cute as Cuddles Coopers was her singing and dancing number was kind of painful. Reminds me of Blanche Devereaux singing, "I Wanna Be Loved By You" at the "Rusty Anchor"

BTW, speaking of Miss Rue, she was very harsh about Miss Valerie in her autobiography and seemed offended at the prospect of being a supporting character with her in that show set in Paris, Cafe Americain.
She was probably jealous of her looks and youth. I can't figure out why else she was so bitchy about her in her memoir.
