View Full Version : My New Feelings Towards Sitcoms I Don't Like
Adamantium 04-16-2016, 03:04 PM I just wanted to say that I am changing my attitude about sitcoms, specifically sitcoms I don’t like. In the past I would speak ill of certain sitcoms I don’t like. I would more than speak ill though. I would feel hatred of those shows. I’ve decided to let that hatred go. It’s stupid to feel hatred for a TV show. And I have to say, since making this decision, I feel kind of free in a sense. I’m even planning on buying the complete series of “WKRP in Cincinnati” next week. I already own “Sanford and Son” and I’m gonna watch some of those episodes. I’m even thinking about purchasing the complete series of “The Nanny” and giving it a fair chance. Maybe even “George Lopez”. Of course this is all money willing. I’m not just going to go broke for these shows, lol.
I imagine my bitterness towards some shows come from them basically competing with one another, either for a time slot or for your attention so they can stay on the air as long as they want. So when I fall in love with a show like “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” and it’s cancelled TWICE, leaving a whopping total 19 episodes and then another show like “Two and a Half Men” which I never thought was funny gets to stay on for twelve seasons, it bothers me. Or when other people put down shows I love, while they boast shows I don’t like, that irks me, too.But like I say as of this point, I’m letting that go. Shows are shows. Sitcoms are entertainment. They’re all meant to make you laugh… and that’s a pretty good thing!
Svenfan1234 04-16-2016, 06:04 PM Good for you! I've recently been hating shows like "Friends", "Seinfeld", "The Cosby Show", "Full House" and such but I've decided to let it go and give these shows a fair chance. I also don't particularly care for shows like "That '70s Show", "Malcolm in the Middle" and "The Big Bang Theory" but I might even give THEM a fair shake. Like you said, shows are shows. All they are is meant for our entertainment.

I don't really understand your hatred towards WKRP, but I get why you hate The Nanny. I hated it for a long time. A few years ago I gave The Nanny a chance and don't hate it anymore. It's not a show I want to watch over and over again. The supporting cast (Niles and CC) are funny, funnier than the 2 main characters.
tlc38tlc38 04-16-2016, 08:11 PM Good for you Adam! I'm sure you're grow to love "WKRP", "The Nanny", & "Sanford and Son". I love all 3!
Nordy 04-16-2016, 09:53 PM I admit I never thought I'd like Modern Family. I thought at first it was very annoying and quite honestly I never really watched anything else with Ed O'Neill in it since Married...With Children. One day I started watching it probably because I saw Sofia Vergara but I was impressed with the syndication shows then I started watching it more on Wednesday's. Now I love it and can't miss an episode
Crusinforabrusin 04-17-2016, 05:24 AM I have to say that I thought I was going to hate Murphy Brown. Bought season 1 and watched an episode and was hooked. Ever since then, I learned to give sitcoms a chance before totally dismissing it.
P.S.- The same situation occurred with Married With Children
tlc38tlc38 04-17-2016, 08:24 AM ^People automatically think "Murphy Brown" is all about politics....BIG MISTAKE.
If people would stop putting it in that political box and just watch the show then they'd see it's a very smart comedy.

Not a comedy, but I felt the same way about Perry Mason. I had gotten the Season 1, Vol. 1 release of it, and thought it was something I would hate, and that it would be incredibly tedious and slow. Wrongo! It's something that I strongly believe was Raymond Burr's best performance, and it's been good enough for me to have 7 seasons' worth in the volume releases.

When I was younger I think I just found the show kinda boring and it wasn't that funny to me. But then as I got older and NewsRadio became my favorite show, I'd notice that a lot of people would compare the two shows and WKRP in Cincinnati would always come out on top. So I became bitter towards the show. So I guess for me, there's usually more than just one factor of why I "hate" a show. And it's not always fair to that show.
Adamantium 04-17-2016, 03:33 PM Good for you Adam! I'm sure you're grow to love "WKRP", "The Nanny", & "Sanford and Son". I love all 3!
Right now the plan is to tolerate them, lol. I think "WKYP" will be the easiest to get into though.

I've never seen the show. I'm not opposed to watching it one day. Just haven't been in the mood to check it out. I have a co-worker who's always going on about how funny it is though. But then again he loves my least favorite show ever... Two and a Half Men, so I really can't go by his judgment. Ha-ha.

I never cared much for Murphy Brown as a kid but I'd buy it on DVD and watch it if only they'd sell more than just season one. I have nothing against the show, I just haven't seen it all that much.

I've been meaning to check it out but haven't done so yet. My parents own most of the series on DVD and I'm sure would loan them to me if I asked.

I had problems in the past with Friends, Seinfeld and The Cosby Show because they were sooooo popular. It's like I don't think they're bad shows just way overrated. I have recently come to enjoy Seinfeld though and Friends, too. So they're shows I like but I still consider them overrated.
I like That '70s Show even though I avoided it for a long time because Ashton Kutcher annoyed me. But I really got to like it and even his character, Kelso, is funny to me. I love the relationship between Eric and Donna. It's just a fun show to watch (to me anyway).
And I've given my opinions of Malcolm and Big Bang in the other thread.
Svenfan1234 04-17-2016, 04:45 PM Not sitcoms (technically), but do you like The Carol Burnett Show and Looney Tunes?
Adamantium 04-17-2016, 05:01 PM Not sitcoms (technically), but do you like The Carol Burnett Show and Looney Tunes?
Yes. I grew up watching Looney Tunes. And I like The Carol Burnett Show but I don't own any of the DVDs.
Svenfan1234 04-17-2016, 05:02 PM Ones I'm going to change my mind about and try to tolerate:
Dennis the Menace
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
M*A*S*H
Step by Step
Full House
The Cosby Show
Roseanne
I used to think of giving "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" a chance but I changed my mind recently. I'm for sure giving "Seinfeld" another chance though.

Cool! I love both shows :D
Svenfan1234 04-19-2016, 05:42 PM Do you like Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman? It's a pretty good show.
Adamantium 04-19-2016, 05:52 PM Do you like Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman? It's a pretty good show.
I don't know if I like it or not. I own the complete series and I've watched a couple episodes. I don't dislike it necessarily, I just haven't really felt like checking out more episodes yet.
Svenfan1234 04-19-2016, 06:02 PM ^Where? I didn't see it in your pics
Adamantium 04-19-2016, 06:20 PM ^Where? I didn't see it in your pics
I have it on the shelf in my bedroom. I could only fit so many DVDs in that one room and the rest either went onto a shelf in my bedroom or in a cabinet in the kitchen. My bedroom collection is mostly shows that aren't yet complete but it also has a few complete series that just won't fit in the "show room".
Svenfan1234 04-19-2016, 06:25 PM ^Oh. I'd like to get MHMH. How much was it when you bought it?
Adamantium 04-19-2016, 06:55 PM ^Oh. I'd like to get MHMH. How much was it when you bought it?
I don't remember. I'm pretty sure it was around $90. I just felt it was a deal that it cost less than a hundred bucks for a show with 325 episodes.
Svenfan1234 04-19-2016, 07:52 PM ^Must have been a deal on Amazon that day or something. That's a good deal for that show, though!
Edward216 04-20-2016, 03:53 AM Well good for you then.
Ed.

Yeah definitely give Seinfeld another chance. Seinfeld is like an acquired taste. You either like it or not
OH Nuts! 04-25-2016, 10:40 PM There are some shows I really don't care and others I'm ambivalent about- I could take or leave them. But I try to just chalk it up to subjective tastes. For example I'm not a big sci-fi fan so Star Trek never rang my bell. Yet the show is considered by many to be epic and has a huge cult following.
And then there were some shows I didn't care for as a kid that I just love now-like That Girl, for example.
Crusinforabrusin 04-25-2016, 10:48 PM ^ I agree. I also never cared for the whole Sci-Fi genre(unless you count The Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock Presents as Sci-Fi)
