View Full Version : My local supermarket is already high as hell and now after paying for your food, the
TVFactFan 03-05-2016, 09:36 PM cashier asked......"would you like to DONATE" I cut her off in mid sentence especially since it's hard to buy food in this place because of the prices. Now the market wants me to give more of my money for a donation? I almost said F*CK NO
I need someone to donate money to me for my new move lol
Regulus 03-06-2016, 09:01 AM Is there a Wal-Mart in your area?
Crusinforabrusin 03-06-2016, 09:34 AM Why do you post threads like these? It seems like every week you find something to bitch about and then you come on here to complain about it. I don't know about anyone else, but I could honestly give a **** about your problems. I got my own problems to worry about.

That isn't nice!!! :( We all post here our problems or things that are annoying to us from time to time!! Besides the TV shows, that is what we are all about here! Friends helping friends. We are a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen, and we all try to help each other out! ;)
TVfactfan has been a member here for many years! ;) And besides there is nothing wrong or offensive with this thread. Grocery prices ARE very high these days! And after spending lots of money, it is hard to not get annoyed if somebody is asking you to donate more money that you don't have! ;)
Crusinforabrusin 03-06-2016, 10:25 AM Sorry that I was behaving like a jerk.
Mr. Television 03-06-2016, 11:30 AM Once in a while I'll donate a dollar but I hate it that they ask you at the checkout line. It makes you feel like a heel if you say no but I guess that's their point.

This has always happened at supermarkets. Was this your first time shopping for yourself? If so, congrats and condolences. Congrats on adulthood, condolences because it's my least favorite time of the week. It's always for a good cause though, so my best advice is if you can give a buck or so, great , if not, a quick, polite "No thanks" or " Not today" does the trick and you're out the door. The cashier is probably expecting a no.
SOUTH PARK did a hilarious episode on this last season. Here's a clip, but for the full effect, you should really track down the full episode-

Then be wary of the rest of the internet. Out of curiosity I googled the phrase My local supermarket is already high as hell and now after paying for your food, and the OP has posted this topic at at least 4 message boards. If you're going to stick around here you'll have to learn to live with him. Remember that advice you gave tenter yesterday?

That poster has now entered my sh*t list. And you are right, I see many people come here to complain about things in their life and now that poster wants to criticize me?
And I was having a fun rant moment, it wasn't anything serious like the apartment situation

Where is it?
Zoneboy 03-06-2016, 02:26 PM This has always happened at supermarkets.
For years now, yes. Always, no.
HuntingtonM15 03-06-2016, 02:32 PM This can be annoying, especially if it's a store you frequent often and they ask you EVERY time you go in. I especially hate when it's a cashier who tries to be pushy about it. I've now noticed restaurants who do it try to offer an incentive like coupons if you donate, which is actually even more pushy.
For years now, yes. Always, no.
I'm going to guess we've never lived in the same area. From my first day in a supermarket, they've always at least wanted money for Jerry Lewis and the kids.

Probably because they get some kind of incentive if enough people donate

Turns out I'm a year older than you, so we're back to store/geography. I still remember being in the supermarket with mom and getting upset because she gave a dollar to Jerry's kid, but not her own kid. Yeah, I was stupid...
Now can you go back to the game topic and tell me if I'm right about the marine/ US president question?:)

Awww how nice of you
Grave defecation aside(classy, by the way), we haven't mentioned the people RIGHT OUTSIDE the store trying to separate one from their money. Usually the bell ringers at the holidays, but I do see various sellers or donation seekers a time or two thru out the year.

OH Nuts! 03-07-2016, 12:04 AM Oh God Lord, I had a very busy weekend (two funerals to attend and work on Sunday) so I missed this interesting thread. Hope everyone forgives me for chiming in late but I just had to add my two cents.
Yeah Sol, those stores hitting you up for an extra donation IS annoying. I mean, who died and made them the United Way? I just tell them "no thank you" or that I already give to favorite charities. I'm surprised though that this is the FIRST time you've experienced this- I've been hit up more times than I can count.
On another note, $5.29 for syrup? That sounds high to me esp. for Philly. Was it real maple syrup? If so then $5.29 isn't so bad. If it's the imitation stuff, then unless it's a huge bottle....quite high.
Question for you Sol: Is there a Trader Joes or Aldi near you? They both have FANTASTIC prices.

Yeah but Trader Joes is organic food and I didn't like it too much. I remember going there for the first time thinking it was a regular market and was so disgusted when I arrived home
mets82 03-07-2016, 12:18 AM You like to give to charity but there's an old saying "charity begins at home". You barely have enough money to scrape by and that's after paying bills. But also, you have to be careful because you never know some of these charities are trying to hustle you.

Out here where I live as of about three years ago, every store you have to bring your own bag! If not, they provide bags but charge 10 cents per bag. So I'm used to just bringing my own when I go shopping! That's food, drug stores, Target! Everywhere! ;)
OH Nuts! 03-08-2016, 10:14 AM I live 5 mins from Aldi. What kind of food do they have?
Everything. Bread, crackers, snack foods, meat, fish, veggies, canned goods, pastries, fruits, dairy--and their prices are VERY CHEAP. Definitely check them out. You may like them; even though they're owned by same parent company as Trader Joe's. And they are a bit cheaper than TJ.
But be prepared: Aldi's quirky. You have to bring your own shopping bags. If you ask them for one, they charge you something like 15 cents. And they don't take credit cards. They might take debit-check their website. And if you use a large shopping cart you have to deposit a quarter to get one. But when you return the cart, you get the quarter back. Like I said-quirky. But for the great prices, these little things are worth it. For example they had protein bars for $2.99 very similar to the Atkin's brand. The cheapest price I could find for the similar "name brand" bar (without coupons) was $6.29.
Let me know what you think.
OH Nuts! 03-08-2016, 10:20 AM And last I recall, they still do not take checks (which is how it was the first time I heard of Aldi).
Yeah, that can be inconvenient for some. Like I pretty much use my cash back Am Ex card as often as I can - but at Aldi I use cash. For the great savings, it's worth it.

Where (roughly) do you live? Here in NYC everyone gives you a bag, except Aldi. But there are many stores in NYC (like Whole Foods and Zabar's) that give you a 5 or 10 cent credit if you use your own bag.

OH Nuts! 03-08-2016, 01:12 PM If they don't accept debit or credit then it may not be worth the trip
Call them or check their website; they might take debit cards. IMO IT IS worth the trip; their prices are very low!
This is what I'd recommend: call them about what forms of payment they'll take. I really think you should check them out at least once. Also, they sometimes get good deals on name brand items, so you may find something really good.
If my Aldis were closer, I'd be in there all the time. But I'm a 40 minute ride away from both on public transportation.
Aldi is quirky: you have to bring your own bags and doesn't accept credit cards. But they have some really good deals...
Their website now states, and I quote, OMG, we finally accept credit cards.
Personally, I've never been there.
IllinoisTVFan 03-08-2016, 06:04 PM Actually this happens ALL THE TIME for me at EVERY STORE. No kidding (which is why I emphasized it). I'll donate to things like animal shelters, St Jude's, various diseases (I just donated for muscular dystrophy), veteran's groups and many more. I will not donate to things that enable people. For instance, we have a food pantry here and I donate to that, but won't donate to organizations like those that only accept people who receive welfare yet want more. Sorry, but I've been poor and I saw those on welfare eating better than me. I also don't donate to national organizations like United Way.

That's why I generally only give to those with high ratings. I will never donate to United Way.

The annoying thing about that is the store will take the credit for donating the money other people gave them, plus it makes for a good tax write-off. If you want to give to a charity, giving to a profit-making company is not how to do it.
For that kind of money you might as well go to Denny's or IHOP and not have to clean up the kitchen after! ;) :D
I eat fast food everyday. I might die when I'm 50 but it's still cheaper than buying real food at a grocery store. That's how messed up things are today. It should be less expensive to make your own food than it is to go out but that's not really the case. Healthy food just can't compete with the McDonald's Dollar menu. :happyface

And healthy food is so pricy, $5.00 for a salad lol
Salads are usually more expensive than that.
Zoneboy 03-20-2016, 03:34 PM I shop at Aldi very often and would recommend the following:
Little Salad Bar chicken salad, they have it in regular and cranberry almond which is my favorite. A 1 pound tub is about $3.89 and it's the best I've ever had.
Clancy's baked chips , these put Lays to shame and are available in plain and BBQ for $1.69 a bag.
Their regular chips are $1.49 and come in several flavors
Clancy's microwave popcorn. 6 bags for $1.69 and just as good as any of the national brands.
Mama Cozi frozen pizzas. The meatball marinara and taco pizzas are very good and are about $3.69. The only bad thing is their selection changes often. They may have one or two varieties this week and something different the next.
Milk is only $2.19 per-gallon but the prices in your area may be different than here.

Dianne3 03-21-2016, 04:26 PM I always answer "I already gave."
It is sometimes the truth anyway, because there are some charities I do support. ie, Children's Hospital, Humane Society etc.

Yup. Aldi has some really great deals. I really wish there was one closer to where I live. But I do have a Trader Joe's nearby, which is almost as cheap.
