View Full Version : HELP! Does anyone here use locate TV? They are shutting down.
Patty Duke 03-01-2016, 12:08 AM www.locatetv.com just announced they are closing down. It breaks my heart. I keep lots of TV shows and movies stored in my account and it will tell you within two of weeks of the shows or movies coming on TV with the channel and time. I have used this for so long and love it, I feel lost. Does anyone know if there is anything else like this I can use now? :(
For example I could add 'My Three Sons' to my list and IF that show ever came on my channels it would show the date, time, channel. I had 250 movies and TV shows stored on Locate TV and loved that if they ever did come on I got notified on my personal schedule. Your personal schedule only showed the movies/shows you added if they were coming on TV.
I have tried the ones listed below but they basically just show what is coming like a regular TV schedule. I can get that with my Dish Guide.
tenter 03-01-2016, 12:54 PM I would try to use tvschedule.zap2it.com Because it's very useful and more updating than locatetv though. Sorry about locatetv to shut down. There's also tvguide.com
Svenfan1234 03-01-2016, 01:11 PM Oh no ): I always use Locatetv for my schedules and now I'll have to rely on other websites like Zap2it.
Do you know what will take its place?
tvfan25 03-01-2016, 01:56 PM I use Titan TV. You can customize it to your liking including picking your favorite shows and channels. You can also search for shows and it will tell you if they're on in the next few weeks.
Patty Duke 03-01-2016, 02:08 PM The thing about Locate TV that was great is you could store the names of 250 TV shows and movies and they would automatically show up on your daily schedule when a channel was going to air them. I have tried others like TV Guide and Titan TV but they basically just show what is coming on TV and you have to do specific searches for movies, shows etc. :( :( :( :(
Locate TV was perfection. It's a shame as far as we've come that there is nothing else like this.
Patty Duke 03-01-2016, 02:09 PM Do you know what will take its place?
nothing that I've found so far
BigManMike 03-01-2016, 02:56 PM I use Zap2it.
Patty Duke 03-02-2016, 10:34 AM I use Zap2it.
Zapit doesn't let you store names of shows and movies. I had 250 movies and TV shows stored on Locate TV and loved that if they ever did come on I got notified on my personal schedule. Your personal schedule only showed the movies/shows you added if they were coming on TV.
Grumpy Bob 03-02-2016, 11:13 AM Hi Patty. I feel your pain. I have just joined “Sitcoms Online” in order to comment.
I came across “Sitcoms Online” by Googling the words “LocateTV closing down” and that threw up your comments here. I was/am trying to find out why LocateTV is closing down and what alternatives there might be. So far, I haven’t found anything that has the functionality of LocateTV (mainly, as it seems is troubling you, the ability to keep up to 250 items in your “My Picks”. The “My Picks” list is the vital thing that sets LocateTV apart from other TV listings sites. Without it, planning on what to watch becomes a much more time-consuming and hit-and-miss affair.
I started using LocateTV about 4 or 5 years ago when the Radio Times website was revamped. It became a lot more glossy and modern but, for me, lost all its useful functionality (i.e. mainly the “My Programmes” feature – similar to LocateTV “My Picks”).
I would imagine that maintaining something like an individual “My Picks” list for hundreds/thousands of subscribers is a major overhead and headache. Much easier just to provide listings that you can import from a source and just present on a website in your own interface.
Like you, I’m unhappy because I know how much more time and inconvenience it is going to cost me to use any of the other TV listings websites there seem to be out there. There are plenty of them but they are all doing the same thing and don’t offer the key feature(s) I need. Amazingly, I can see a point, in the not too distant future, where I’ll give up on normal TV altogether. I only have Freeview and I don’t even bother to look at the schedules for all but about 6 channels. 75% of the stuff I watch is on the BBC so I could just use iPlayer.
I will let you know if I find a good alternative to LocateTV but I am not hopeful. I, for one, would be happy to pay a subscription to a site such as LocateTV just to keep it going and have the type of product I want – but there doesn’t seem to be anything like that.

I would also be willing to pay for LocateTV and would have offered that as an option for them to try with all their users but I can't seem to contact them anymore. The Facebook page is now gone and so is other contact info. I would think if each of us paid 5.00 per month it would pay for them to continue with the site. It would be worth it to me. I have spent days trying to find anything close to what Locate TV offered and there is nothing.

Titan TV and zap2it.com seem to only cater for viewers in the USA. No use for us in jolly old England :)

I'd be happy to pay £5.00 a month to keep a service such as LocateTV going.
In all honesty, having shopped around at the various TV listing sites available, all I can see as a realistic alternative is to use the Radio Times website as source info and maintain my own spreadsheet of stuff already watched. At least that way, using the Radio Times website, I'll have good (i.e. intelligent and reliable) movie reviews.
What a faff! The TV listings websites all seem to be far more interested in suggesting other things we might want to watch (based on what we already watch) than they do on enabling us to keep track of what we are really interested in.
Traditional TV is, in my opinion, dying. And this is happening, in my opinion, because the broadcasters are trying to tell us what we want rather than listen to what we tell them we want. They are signing their own death warrant with this behavior.

I'm in your boat exactly. How will I know know when that one missing episode of "History's Mysteries" is finally being aired? Sigh.
The best alternative I've found is tvmaze.com. You can "follow" shows and select which episodes you've seen and not seen. You can see a scheduling of airing of your followed shows. So far, though, I haven't seen a way to be notified of upcoming airings of repeat episodes of long-running series.
loreo 03-08-2016, 04:06 AM I love locatetv. it keeps me informed on everything!!! does anyone know who to contact to try to save it before march 16?

Thanks echo, I will take a look at tvmaze.com
I still haven’t found anything with the same functionality (or similar) to locatetv. I, reluctantly, had another look at the Radio Times site but it is no better than it was when I abandoned it 4 or 5 years ago (worse, in fact, since it no longer provides a “list view” – instead, like so many of the other listings sites, only a horizontal view across all of the channels). And the ads are incredibly glaring and distracting!

I’ve tried to get in touch with them via the Feedback link on their Home Page but they didn’t respond. I also (more than a week ago) left a response on their “Closing Down” Page but they haven’t responded and my comments haven’t appeared.
I think there is a genuine gap in the market here for someone to come up with a subscription-based service that offers the same features as LocateTV. There are other subscription-based services - such as the Premium service on Digiguide. That is just £2.99/year but I have used digiguide before and I found it far, far, far, FAR more complicated and sophisticated than I needed. And, again, it doesn’t have the vital features that I’m looking for! Argh!

TV Maze doesn't allow you to add names of movies and TV shows that aren't on like Locate TV. I loved Locate TV because I could store shows and movies I hoped would be on TV at some point and if they were scheduled they would show up on your personal schedule.
Same situation here. I too would be willing to pay for the LocateTV service.
Grumpy Bob 03-10-2016, 07:25 PM Well, the closing date for LocateTV is looming and I still haven't found anything as good. Digiguide (digiguide.tv) seems the closest. They offer different packages ranging from free to £14.99/year.
"Digiguide.tv Premium" costs £2.99/year and that is the one I am currently trialing.
"Digiguide for Windows" costs £14.99/year and offers more services (none of which want) but doesn't have the key features that LocateTV offers (that I do want).
You can try out the subscription services before you buy. Currently, I'm trying out "Digiguide.tv Premium".

Digiguide.tv is just for the UK :(
TVKid54 03-13-2016, 03:30 PM I have been using LocateTV for years. Some of you have highlighted their best attributes, like notifications when missing episodes of a long running series come on. One other thing that LocateTV does that other sites don't is list ALL AIRINGS of an episode, not just the initial airing (if an episode plays 8 times in a week, all would be listed; most "replacements" only list the initial airing).
I have been working on this for over a week, to find a replacement. I have looked at the following websites and will have to "settle" for one, since none measure up to Locate TV. It may even take using 2 websites to get all my information (yes, I am a "tv-aholic!!). :-)
These are the sites I have investigated that are even close:
NEXTGUIDE-shows multiple airings;
trakt.tv-supports tv, movies and people and allows tracking; doesn't list multiple episode airings in a week/time period
TV.COM-much the same supported items as trakt.tv
ZAP2IT.COM-shows all episodes; possible use as a resource
These are the ones that weren't worth it. In many cases, I opened accounts, set up part of my "catalog" of shows and tried to use the listings.
DUCKIE.TV
EPISODECALENDAR.COM
FOLLOWMY . TV
followshows
GETGLUE/TELFI
IMDB
my episodes .com
NEXTEPISODE.tv (only shows)
SIDEREEL.com
themoviedb
TITAN
TV Guide
TVCALENDAR
TVMAZE.COM
tvshowtime.com
YIDIO . COM
One of the drawbacks to TRAKT is their data source. They refer to TheTVDB.com, which is updated by "the users", so if it doesn't get added there in a timely manor, the listings on TRAKT are basically worthless.
I hope this information helps. And if anyone does find a good replacement, I would certainly love to hear about it!
So glad I found this. I have been having trouble finding any chatter on the net about LocateTV's demise!
Have a great day! :)
chukpeev 03-14-2016, 05:32 AM Check out next-episode . net as well.
It's been out for more than 10 years now and many ex-localetv users already moved there!
srewolf 03-14-2016, 12:36 PM As another LocateTv user, I really appreciate the suggestions above. Here is another: the TiVo OnePass, which apparently you can set up to seek out & record particular movies and series, or even specific episodes, from broadcast tv OR streaming from the web. Look on the tivocommunity forum thread titled "TiVo Introduces OnePass" (thread number 10363391) second page details from TiVoMargret (post number 10363391) (sorry for lack of URL, I just joined in order to make this post, and it won't accept URLs from me yet…)
TiVo OnePass really seems quite powerful, though I haven't used it (yet). Even if you don't have a TiVo device, they have set up some amount of search that you can use over the web, but I haven't had time to try it out.
Regarding LocateTv, according to Linkedin, it is(was?) privately held with less than 50 employees. My guess is that the owners made a business decision to shut it down, but it sure would be nice to know the particulars. e.g. was it lack of profit, or disagreement among owners, or a better opportunity that they're transitioning to, or ????
Patty Duke 03-14-2016, 01:07 PM I want to find one that allows you to store names of movies and TV shows not currently on that will let you know when they do air like Locate TV. So far nothing else I've found does this.
srewolf 03-14-2016, 02:12 PM Tivo has always allowed you to type in a name to establish a wishlist search for a show that is not currently available, for whenever it comes around. (If you want just a specific episode, you search for both the show title and episode title.)
On their current system, stuff it cannot find goes into a "Not Currently Available" folder (my Tivo is older so I cannot check this out, but you can read the help files or the tivocommunity post I mentioned above for details).
What the newer tivos offer is a web interface, so you can do this show specifying in a browser, and then it will send the record mandates to your device. (Since my tivo is older, that is what I was using LocateTv for).
On IMDB you can create a Watchlist that indicates if one of your selections will be on tv in the next couple of days. It lacks many of the great features of LocateTV but you can select movies and tv shows that are not on the air and check your list regularly to see if they are coming on.

Patty Duke 04-08-2016, 11:21 PM I signed up for everything suggested except the tivo thing because I don't have tivo and I have a friend who tried it.
NOTHING comes close to what Locate TV was so I just have to accept it and move on. :Locate TV did shut down, I'll sure miss them. I always signed on quite a bit to see if anything from my wishlist was coming on TV.
Thanks anyway.
Babalu 04-10-2016, 11:21 PM I too had the maximum number of saved people/shows at Locate TV. Boy will I miss them. :(
Grumpy Bob 04-21-2016, 05:20 PM As I thought, since the demise of LocateTV, I'm constantly missing programmes I would have watched because I haven't got time to plan and monitor my viewing without their help. Amazing that there isn't SOMEONE who can provide a service like LocateTV (even for a significant fee).
So annoying! Dozens and dozens of TV listings sites on the Web but all doing (basically) the same thing and not providing the sort of facilities that people actually want. Argh!

I'm not complaining at or about LocateTV for closing down. I'm just sad that they had to.
As for zap2it, (A) it doesn't have the features I want and (B) you need provide a US or Canada zip code in order to register. Not much use to us in the UK.

We were expressing our opinions/feelings because they shut down, there is nothing wrong with that. You have the ability to Scroll on by if you don''t want to read it. And I'm sorry but zap2it does NOT come close to what Locate TV was.

ashratom 04-27-2016, 11:42 PM Hi everyone, I registered an account here to respond to this thread and hopefully help others who miss Locate TV. This seemed the only serious dialog I could find, and I've been seeking a solution personally. Like you all, I was a regular user of the site, and was disappointed they closed shop (I can guess why, but it's pure speculation on my part: Legal reasons).
I can see that most of the "solutions" here are from users who never actually used the site like those of us who are disappointed of its demise. Personally I used Locate TV to find either a) obscure movies being shown on cable, or b) newer movies that are just now finding their way onto cable. In any case, I had to figure out a solution! No way was I going back to scanning listings from scratch.
Well, believe it or not, the obvious solution ended up being the answer: TV Guide, or tvguide.com of course. You have to sign in/register, but it's free, just like Locate TV was. Search for a movie or TV show and add it to your Watchlist (it's very obvious how to do this). Then view your Watchlist, and it will list all of your shows that you selected. And you can set your cable provider, just as you could with Locate TV (in fact, definitely do this, as it changes the results).
As you will see, it is in no way as nice as Locate TV was, but it is better than nothing! For example, one show that Locate TV helped me find was The Conspirator (you can use this example). You will see it says "No new airings in the next 14 days", and then right next to it it says "On TV" - and sure enough, there it is - a listing on the Sundance channel, just as Locate TV showed me prior. That's exactly how I used Locate TV - so this solution works, even though the interface is far more clunky and cumbersome. I'll take anything at this point...
So I added in all my movies that I once had in Locate TV (pulled down since they gave us extra time). I did notice their database wasn't as robust as Locate TV's, and some of my more obscure movies didn't have an entry at TV Guide. Perhaps over time, that will resolve itself.
Hopefully this post helps you all as well!
- Tom
dare2be 04-28-2016, 12:47 PM TV Guide, while seemingly pretty useful, doesn't have all the local channels in my area that Zap2It has, and Zap2It also has a faves list that on the surface appears as robust as TVGuide's.
dannymurray 05-04-2016, 07:50 PM I'm now using ontvtonight.com if that helps. It doesn't have a favorites or watch feature, but it does have a search engine to search for specific shows. US only though..

I want something that lets you add Stars of your choice, the names of old movies and TV Shows and will show you if they come on TV in the future like Locate TV did. Nothing I've found so far comes close, they are nothing but a glorified TV guide.

The problem with TV Guide is it tries to take over your computer.
I really hate TV Guide.
ashratom 05-13-2016, 04:32 PM I'm really glad I went out of my way to try and help. Jeez Louise. I should have stayed silent.
In any case, it solved the immediate issue for me. As I stated, it's not what Locate TV was by any stretch, but it's better than manual viewing of lists for what's on TV. And already it's paid dividends, by alerting me of a rare screening of a film in 2 weeks I would not have otherwise known about.
Pattyduke: "I want something that lets you add Stars of your choice, the names of old movies and TV Shows and will show you if they come on TV in the future like Locate TV did." TVGuide does this at least. Maybe not the stars part (well, I haven't tried it to be honest), but for most old movies and TV Shows (see my initial post for some tips). The latter two is how I used LocateTV and that's what I missed.
And yes, it does appear Zap2It would have yielded similar results to TV Guide. That's a good suggestion as well, though I didn't pursue that option.
