Someone at the library that I go to had an argument with a security guard at the library. He's gone, but this seems to happen every month...

So how good are those tablet computers? My dad is going to buy me one real soon and then I won't have to deal with these bums who like to argue.

There not bad. You have to get used to a smaller screen and the touch screen is sometimes a pain because you always touch the wrong site by accident.

We have a problem with the homeless people hanging out at our library. Some of them don't bother you but others do. The last time I went I had a homeless man follow me around and get much too close to me. I left without checking out any books and I also told the librarian. There's not much they can do about it unless they actually attack you. I no longer go there to browse for books.

This is all just a symptom of thirty years of Reaganomics, where profit has been diverted to the Cayman Islands whilst public services have deteriorated and the demand for them increased. Add guns and mental health issues into the mix and you end with a society where nobody feels at ease.

I can't speak about your library, but for basic internetting, tablets are fine and convenient.

That's the problem at the library I'm at. Too many people hang around from off the streets disrupting things. No real business there except to loiiter.

One guy last week just reeked of cannabis. puke:

And I also notice a lot of brats at the computer stations like the ones I now twirling on the chairs who are not even using the computers but are playing on their smell phones. A lot of them do this for hours. As if anyone who might need to use a station is stuff out of luck.

It's sad to be homeless and I hate to see people down and out! But it is just getting out of hand nowadays! Seems the homeless are everywhere now!! Not just in bad neighborhoods! And some of them are scary!

I am in the process of getting a library card to check out movies!! I did notice homeless hanging around out front , so I'm just gonna hurry in, get my selection and go as quick as I can!!!

I read an article once that listed the top spots to pick up bed bugs and the library was listed. Others were movie theaters, hotels, public transit, anywhere the public congregates. The bugs just hitch a ride.

YUCK!!!!:p  And I was on an LA Metro bus /public city bus and it wasn't very crowded this time, seats available and a man was standing up near me, and I heard him say to another person the very same thing, that he didn't want to sit down because you never know ,there could be bedbugs!!! :p :(

The public libraries here in Manhattan NYC are kind of skeevy. LOTS of homeless folks and many have BO. I seldom go to the library, but when I do, it's rarely for more than 10 minutes.

I think the last time I was in a library was when I was in college. There was one on campus.

I'm at another branch today...the Cleveland Libraries are okay, but it may take me awhile to return to the Carnegie West Branch. The South Branch is okay...that's where I'm at now.

I wish I could help-out the homeless, but I even got stopped by a couple of times with bums that have good shoes saying "Can you give me some money so I can eat"?

I'm sooooo tempted to say "Get A Job"!

I wouldn't mind giving them a voucher they could exchange for food, but I'm afraid if I give them money they'll just buy alcohol, so I don't. I do feel mean though.

I worked at a library, a small tame type place. The worst that happens at the library is lonely people like to talk to the counter clerks. They talk about the book they read. Other than that, it is some what of a snoozeville library.

Thanks to the internet, weirdos hanging out in the library is no longer just a big city issue. I live in a very rural area and often go to the county library when I need to do large downloads. I can afford good internet, I just don't have access out in the sticks.

Twenty years ago, the library would be empty. Now, it's full of people using the free wi-fi.

They act like they're in their own homes. Talking loudly, propping their feet up, bringing in food. Kids RUN through the place screaming and yelling.

And they're not doing anything important. They'll announce loudly what they're looking at. Facebook! Or games. Lots of bells and whistles and cussing when they lose at whatever they're doing.

It's a very poor community. Lots of morbid obesity, which mean B.O. Lack of simple hygiene, more B.O. Lots of smokers, so you always hear disgusting hacking or you smell them or both. Lots of heroin and meth heads around here, so you can't turn your back on your gear for a second.

Turned in my chair to pop a book back onto a shelf once and a nearby dirtbag made a move for my iPad. I was watching him and expected it.

I get in and get out and actually disinfect all my equipment and myself when I get home.

Sometimes, people play the bum.

That's why I'll always say "no", because sometimes these people are bull****ting me.

I heard one guy actually lives in the 'burbs...he just plays the part...

The homeless OWN New York. They harass, hustle and shake down the rich and working people each and every block midtown. As soon as you give money to one, here comes another three demanding their cut. In New York people give them money out of fear and the mayor and police chief says their is and will never be anything that anyone can ever do about it.

I feel the same way. Of course, I'd like to give but you never know if they are faking.

As far as the library goes, I've never seen any homeless people in the libraries I have been too.

As Coffeecup alluded to about his job in the library, the library I usually use fits that description. Not a lot of people in the library and not a lot of computers. Its quiet although some times kids yell and scream.

You know I remember libraries when it was all about books. There was a newspaper and reference section but nothing fancy. Then came videos, records and CDs, then the internet. I know life has moved on since the 1970s and I don't mind people coming in out of the cold, but I do wonder if we have gone wrong somewhere, especially when I see the standard of written work amongst young people today.

I almost wanted to rat on this bum who did nothing but talk-out loud while a baroque quartet was performing.

I'm liking the stuff the quartet is playing, but the bum had to talk about "The Jerry Sandusky Syndrome" in front of children! How inappropriate!

Yesterday he was next to the computer that I was on...and this is a different person!

Sadly some of the homeless are mentally ill. But sick or not, his behavior was over the top. Surprised he wasn't escorted out (by police if necessary)

Yesterday, someone was smoking a non-tobacco cigarette and this guy (a different one) said "what are you looking at"?

If another incident happens...I'll find another library to go. That or I'll ask the church to let me use their computer after I'm done working!

This is why I like my library. No weird people generally. I have a tablet and a desktop and the tablet it good for online. I don't use it for things like word processing or printing because it's not good for that. If people are harassing you should tell. Recently the library had a loud mouth moron and he was kicked out.

I live not-too-far from the South Brooklyn branch of the Cleveland Public Library. Never had any problems there, but it's a bit small, imo.

If we have any real pestering type problems, we alert the police. Several months ago, a woman came into the library and wouldn't leave. The counter clerks said, we are closing now, it was closing time and the woman said I can't go, for my husband bothers me. The clerk asked and the woman gave the impression, she was abused. The clerks were kind of numb to hear this situation. The staff was told to find a phone in another part of the counter clerks area and called the police. Let the police handle in and they have resources on where the woman could go. But other than that, we have a safe place.

UPDATE!!:

I have my library card now and have been twice to the library. No problems so far, but I have noticed a couple homeless looking men walking around mumbling to themselves, and the other day one smelled REALLY bad!! :(

I mainly got the card to check out movies. I'm not seeing a big selection of recent movies ,but they have a pretty good selection of old movies which I really like. I've checked out the original Amityville Horror, Love Story and Lifeguard! ;)

I don't know how your library works, but mine (Brooklyn Public Library) allows you to go online and request items that aren't at your local spot. They send you an e-mail when the item arrives and you can then pick it up from your local location.

What is that? I know what Sandusky did but what is the syndrome?

Also, my library is fine and quiet. Its not very big like the bigger towns but for me its quaint and it has internet and printing so I'm happy.

Mine does that too.

I was reminded of a funny but sick story. I had this friend Len. He's dead now but many years ago he would go to the library to look up porn and people for sex. The librarian caught him doing a Pee Wee and kicked him out. Stupid Len did it AGAIN next week and was banned with photo. He then went to a nearby library and did the same thing. He claimed it was a misunderstanding but knowing him I have no doubt he did it. He was a perv who did creepy things, including picking up cross dressing hookers (men dressed as women), and he hired a 17 year old to perform a certain act (that according to Clinton is not sex) because he liked the idea of being with a black teen boy. He also once bought me sex toys thinking I would want to "have fun" with him.

Not always. It's better that kids be informed, most likely in the frankest approach possible, that there *are* screwed up adults who will try to take advantage of them. Letting kids know this lessens the chance that a predator can psychologically isolate them from their family and peers (predators usually go for prey they perceive as weak) and it gives the kids the knowledge and the strength to refuse advances. Predators count on their victims to be too ashamed or intimidated to refuse or report abuse.

Okay...that's when you should tell children about how some people may be creeps...that's why children are told "don't talk to strangers".

In two days...someone had to leave because they were making a scene.

One is a regular who has to talk-out loud. She was escorted out...that b***h!

I'm NOT going to the Carneige West Branch of my library anymore...I'll go to the Main Branch downtown or to the South Branch which is quieter!
