View Full Version : TV Land disappointment...

What's up with TV Land recently?

Bear with me here, please...

1) Weekends devoted to Reba.

I don't get this. It's not that Reba is a bad show, because I don't think it is, but every Saturday, for the last few months, they've been running marathons. The thing is, Reba only has like 126 episodes, compared to say, Roseanne (222), King of Queens (207), Everybody Loves Raymond (210), Golden Girls (180) and other longer-running 1990s-00s era sitcoms that play on TVLand, so, you cycle through 'em really, really fast. Each weekend, TV Land runs 25 Reba episodes (between Saturday and Sunday marathons) - that's basically 20% of the entire series' run in just two days. It's ridiculous. In two weeks, you run through 40% of the series' run, which means repeat episodes are far more likely than any other TV Land show. I don't get it. I like the show but it's just crazy how it plays constantly on Saturday & Sunday.

2) Where's their holiday marathon?

Every year, TVLand (and Nick at Night) would run a marathon of most their shows - from the Nanny to Every Body Loves Raymond to Roseanne. This year? Bupkis. That's not to say there aren't Holiday themed episodes, there are, but they're limited to the typical weeknight airings of that show.

Generally, the weekend before Christmas is when TV Land liked to run its Christmas marathon, so, this weekend, and yet, Saturday & Sunday, is just normal programming - the Reba marathon (see above), Golden Girls, Raymond and King of Queens. The only hint of a holiday marathon is Wednesday/Thursday when they run Christmas episodes of Raymond and King of Queens - two shows that air in their typical time slot anyway.

No marathon. Nothing extensive.

3) Roseanne fading away.

What happened to Roseanne? It used to be a staple and now it's barely on anymore. It pretty much just airs early Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings - and only two or three episodes in that stretch. There's nothing on the weekends. Nothing on weekend nights ... and going back to the holiday themed episodes, no Roseanne Christmases. As you can take from my name, I'm a pretty big Roseanne fan, so, this is a disappointment. Fortunately, Logo still airs it a great deal...but I do miss it mixed in with other old TV Land shows.

Just disappointed and had to vent. Sorry.

Did they drop Bewitched too? I haven't seen it on the last few times I tuned in.

OH Nuts!

When I hear things like this about TV Land, a cable channel people shell out bucks for, it makes me love FREE channels like Antenna TV even more. Antenna's marathons always have excellent timing, and avoid overkill. When a beloved actor of one of their shows passes, they will often do tribute marathons. Like when Davey Jones of the Monkees passed, Antenna did a 29 hr marathon of the entire series.

Regarding crappy time slots and shows disappearing, I guess many vintage channels of guilty of that. Maybe I'm missing something, but if a show you like is on at a bad time, can't you just record it to your preferred media (tape or DVD) and then watch it at your convenience? When a vintage show I love comes on TV, I'll burn most or all to DVD, so that if it does get dropped, I have copies I can watch forever.

TV Land is a dead station!

It's owned by Viacom and all they want to do is make money rather than have quality television! They weren't like that in the 80's or 90's, they knew what was good TV rather than "I think people will love these shows, so let's dump the other shows"!

This is why I feel so strongly about Antenna-it's free and has (IMO) wonderful shows.

But no station is perfect, but some, once you weigh all the pros and cons, are still terrific-at least in comparison.

Urgh! That's what I thought. I don't get Logo so it's back to my DVDs for me. I like watching DVDs, but it was nice seeing Bewitched on TV again for awhile. I thought TV Land was trying to be more retro again.

Bewitched is STILL on TVLand, just only showing weekdays 5PM hour. And it can still be shown on Antenna TV.

Also I notice that TVLand will air the movie Hugo on Fri Dec 25 9AM-12PM and 8PM-11PM; just one day after Nick at Nite will air the same movie Thurs Dec 24 8PM-11PM!

They did have the Merrython. I didn't watch it but it seemed like the same shows you have seen were on. Just a half-assed attempt by them.
Yes, Reba is on wayyy to much and Roseanne is hardly on. I wish somebody would buy TVLand and reboot it.

The problem is anything 15-20 years old these days is now old and can be considered classic. We now have to cater to Millenials and their nostalgia. The thing is TV sucked in the 90s and 00s just as much as it does today. Sadly the 60s 70s and 80s stuff is being relegated to the nursing home demographics. When the Baby Boomers die out we'll probably never see the actual good Tv again. People in 20 years will be getting nostalgic about 2 Broke Girls. F***.

I couldn't agree more. However, I believe the sitcom died around 1980 and has never really bounced back.

TV was never better than it was in the 1970s, and probably never will be again. All we can do is just enjoy what was made and get frustrated over the fact that TV couldn't match the quality in any other decade.

If people ever get nostalgic about 2 Broke Girls....OMG! That is simply the worst show....the writing is horrible the acting is over-the-top high school talent show time.

I have a good friend who is an actor here in LA. He gets sent out on auditions for sitcom guest star roles. He says he just can't understand what happened to the writing, why things are so bad. So, I asked him, when you audition, are the show's writers in the room? He said sometimes. I said, "So, describe to me the average comedy writer on sitcoms today. Who are they?" Overwhelming, most of them are fresh out of college, early 20s, grew up thinking "Saved By The Bell" was masterpiece comedy.

THAT explains the situation of comedies today......

I couldn't agree more. In the "good 'ol days" of sitcoms, the average writer was in his or her 50s and 60s. You have a broader, more realistic awareness of the world. That lends far better to comedy than people who just entered puberty.

Yeah, writers back in the 70s defintely were older.

Growing up in the 1980's and 1990's, there were some good sitcoms out there, I will say that the whole All in the Family motif faded, but was somewhat active. It seemed that it was 1996 when we saw the beginning of the end...Friends was becoming VERY popular and every TV sitcom HAD to be Friends...and it was also on at 8 p.m. where that should be Family Hour, now we either might as well have our kids go to bed or watch Nickelodeon in the other room!

Now every sitcom is basically Friends or Seinfeld clones...except with 3-4 bland characters and one ******* character! This is why I can't even get into watching Rules of Engagement or How I Met your Mother...bland characters and one *******! But that's today's sitcom!

I read an article once that said that the "Cheers" writers were the last generation of sitcom writers to grow up with books instead of TV. What a difference that makes!

TV Land's editing is soooo bad. Last summer, I was watching Gilligan's Island. The eppie had a 40 minute time slot. Yet, they still ended up chopping the episode up all to hell.
They're way too beholden to commercials. I know every channel is really, but geez, TV Land takes it to another level. I won't even watch the channel anymore because of it.

Speaking of which, TVLand has made major schedule changes in January month even the blog didn't mention this! I don't know when it started because I barely pay attention to TVLand schedule since it doesn't appeal to me.

Facts of Life, Three's Company are off the lineup completely. More Andy Griffith Show, more Gunsmoke, but one airing Bonanza. And more Everybody Loves Raymond on primetime.

Roseanne quietly returned to TVLand only for late night airings. How I Met Your Mother airings are slowly being reduced.

I was watching the new version of Battlestar Galactica when the same thing happened to me. :( That and the endless series of Political "Attack Ads" (It was an election year) made me question WHY was I paying to watch this drivel. A couple of years later I made my decision, and now allthough I still pay to watch a TV show (at the same price I paid for a cable TV subscription when I dropped it) my programming has zero minutes of commercials per hour!

That, quite so! I've gotten tired of the constant stream of, "Vote for me-- he's blah, blah, blah!", and then a few seconds later, "Vote for me-- she's blah, blah, blah!", and then a couple minutes later, more of the same. You and I are not alone in this.

I think what TV Land is trying to do is change their image by gaining a more successful audience and by adding more 1990's sitcoms and even showing movies I think TV Land wants to score high marks with this new generation of TV fans. When TV Land first came out Mom and I liked it because it showed lots of wonderful classic TV sitcoms and not only that TV Land would show classic retro commercials from time to time as well but I think as soon as Nickelodeon/Nick At Nite got a new president and staff they went downhill by starting to add sitcoms to the channel by only showing the episodes for one week only and then replacing them with another sitcom and repeated the same thing. TV Land started doing this when they started showing Benson and then did it again when they added Newsradio as well. Another thing that I find surprising about TV Land is that they started adding reruns of Extreme Makeover Home Edition and it proved that TV Land was indeed going toward a new direction but I have noticed that The King Of Queens Roseanne The Nanny How I Met Your Mother Reba Everybody Loves Raymond and The Adventures of Old Christine are now overplayed on TV Land too much and I would like to see reruns of The Facts Of Life Three's Company The Brady Bunch and many other classic sitcoms on TV Land. Another odd thing that TV Land did and I cannot figure why they did this is they now show Steve Harvey's Family Feud in a marathon every Saturday from 3AM-6AM and to me it also seems that TV Land also wants to show game shows too and you can bet that TV Land in a few years will soon add game shows to their schedule for more fun. But all and all TV Land is great and I hope that they return to show classic sitcoms again soon,

Channels like MeTv and Antenna TV are now what TV Land was 10 or more years ago. My theory is that the execs at TV Land want to appeal to a different demographic now. It is a shame, and you would think they would have learned their lesson, since most of TV Land's original programming is pretty lame. Hot in Cleveland, in my opinion, was only "hot" for about 15 minutes.

I even made a thread about it and some Viacom networks like VH1, MTV have been acquiring sitcoms. VH1 currently airing Fresh Prince. MTV currently airing How I Met Your Mother. Viacom networks falling in deep end. VH1 abandoning music videos.
