The ratings drop mentioned in the article is only for one week. According to Headline Planet, per Nielsen cable data, this week’s episode “drew a 0.45 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, a 0.47 adults 18-34 rating, and a viewership total of 2.145 million.”
Compare to last week, which posted a 0.67 adults 18-49 rating, a 0.70 adults 18-34, and a viewership mark of 2.504 million. A drop for sure, but networks generally don't base major decisions on shows in their second season on a one-week ratings decline.
Despite the one-week decline, Girl Meets World is still one of the Disney Channel’s strongest offerings — so it makes absolutely zero sense that execs would not renew one of their biggest draws.
In addition, star Rowan Blanchard hinted at things to come in the as-yet-to-be-announced third season in a recent interview. While discussing the Riley/Lucas/Maya love triangle, she told TVLine, “I think we all saw it coming. We just knew it was natural for the characters. If you go back in Season 1, there are certain lines that Lucas says to Maya or Maya says to Lucas… and it’s so obvious they have feelings for each other. I don’t know what’s going to happen in Season 3 (http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_14480927719056&key=aa92ef784ae899a6ad5ad77ddc823a8c&libId=ih8t0w2m0100riz2000DAk35yeix4&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sheknows.com%2Fentertainment%2Farticles%2F1103457%2Fnew-girl-meets-world-rumors-infuriate-fans&v=1&out=http%3A%2F%2Ftvline.com%2F2015%2F11%2F13%2Fgirl-meets-world-love-triangle-interview-season-2-finale-spoilers%2F&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fhsrd.yahoo.com%2F_ylt%3DA86.ItoTJFBW0rIAr3ObvZx4%3B_ylu%3DX3oDMTNzNWJsaWVqBGJwb3MDMQRjY29kZQNnYQRjcG9zAzMEY3QDMQRnA2JmYjAyOTYwLTlhNGUtM2E1Ny04NTJjLTdhMDhiMDhjMjI5MgRpbnRsA3VzBGl0YwMwBHBrZ3QDNARwb3MDMQRzZWMDdGQtc3RybQRzbGsDdGl0bGUEdGVzdAM0NzA-%2FRV%3D1%2FRE%3D1449302291%2FRH%3DaHNyZC55YWhvby5jb20-%2FRO%3D2%2FRU%3DaHR0cDovL3d3dy5zaGVrbm93cy5jb20vZW50ZXJ0YWlubWVudC9hcnRpY2xlcy8xMTAzNDU3L25ldy1naXJsLW1lZXRzLXdvcmxkLXJ1bW9ycy1pbmZ1cmlhdGUtZmFucw--%2FRS%3D%255EADAPJZ98kiPyHWPzfXadVa163taa1M-&title=New%20Girl%20Meets%20World%20rumors%20have%20infuriated%20fans&txt=what%E2%80%99s%20going%20to%20happen%20in%20Season%203), but for me, this all feels so natural… Who knows, maybe we’ll be in exact opposite positions in our fourth season.”
