Well he was a liberal too so I suppose not too surprising. Ironically one of his best friends was James Stewart who was ultra conservative but apparently they never discussed politics but built trains together. I shouldn't say liberal or conservative because there were liberal Democrats for the war (Or at least for the military if against the war)
