I wish that they would bring out the complete series on DVD. Does anyone know when or if it will come out on DVD?

I recently ordered the 1st season DVD, and should have it in a few days. I ordered for a couple reasons. First, I found a great deal for it on Amazon, $11.71 total. Second, the 1st season DVD has uncut episodes, unlike Antenna TV's edited airings.

But the question is: Why hasn't the complete series of ODAAT been released on DVD yet? It's been 8 years since the 1st season was released. All of Norman Lear's other popular 70's shows are now complete on DVD. All In The Family, Maude, Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford And Son, and Mary Hartman. So what's the problem with One Day At A Time? I'm surprised a studio like Shout Factory hasn't picked this up and finished it on DVD. Perhaps eventually it will happen.

The 1st season DVD I ordered arrived in the mail today. Cool! I will watch some episodes tonight!! :D The 1st season DVD has uncut episodes, so there are scenes not shown on Antenna TV. Bonnie Franklin is also looking her cutest here in this 1st season. :eyes:

Shout needs to release the rest. I no longer watch Antenna TV because of the credit crunching so I hope this comes to DVD so I can see it with the full credits and unedited episodes.

I think the only to see unedited eps is if the show is released by shout. Shout provided lots of surprises when releasing the Jeffersons last year

I think eventually ODAAT will be completed on DVD. It's the only one of Norman Lear's popular 70's shows that's not been completed on DVD. If Mary Hartman can be complete on DVD, certainly ODAAT can be complete too. I just don't know what the problem is. Maybe the 1st season DVD did sell so poorly and another studio is reluctant to take it further.

I'm not sure if I would want the complete series DVD or not. I do like the earlier seasons better. However, the series was fairly consistent during it's run, and each season contains a share of good episodes. And the cast changes that took place over the years kept things fresh and interesting. So it's a tough call.

I watched 2 episodes from the 1st season DVD yesterday. It was great to see the complete episodes! :D Also, Bonnie Franklin and Richard Masur have good acting chemistry together. I didn't like the show as much after the early part of season 2 when Richard left. Although there was that one episode a few years later, "Indianapolis Story" when Richard came to visit.

It's not the type of show you watch over and over due to all the dramatic multi-part episodes each season. The show was popular in the 70's because people were watching it for the first time.

All In The Family has dramatic, multi-part episodes and that show is complete on DVD. However, All In The Family was considered a ground breaking show. One Day At A Time is just one of those shows that for whatever reason, has slipped between the cracks regarding being completed on DVD.

Please don't compare AITF with this crappy a$$ show. You know damm well there were lots of funny eps of AITF that were classic. One Day at a Time was 85% Drama and 15% comedy which is why it's hard to watch over and over again like

All In The Family and One Day At A Time are both Norman Lear shows. Both are sitcoms interwoven with dramatic situations. So what's not to compare?

All In The Family was the groundbreaker and paved the road for other Norman Lear shows to follow. One Day At A Time doesn't really have the star power like All In The Family does. That's probably as good a reason as any why the series hasn't been fully released on DVD yet.

I'll agree with you on that one. All In The Family has Archie Bunker, classic 70's sitcom character. The funniest character in One Day At A Time is Schneider. He's funny, but not really considered among classic 70's sitcom characters.

I think Sam looked sleazy and looked too old for Ann. It would have been cool if Ann hooked up with David, but the series had just started and the producers wanted Ann to be a single woman. There was that "Indianapolis Story" episode later on when David came back for Ann, then at the end he decided he didn't want her.

I think the complete series DVD will eventually get released. It's 1970's/80's Norman Lear. If Shout Factory doesn't want to do it, another studio might pick it up. MPI for example. They always do good work with their DVD's.

A few episodes might have music clearance issues. Like those holiday themed episodes where they put on the shows at the retirement home.

Kasey
12-02-2015, 10:53 AM
Yes the musical episodes are problematic. Shout doesn't think the return on their investment will be worth it because of the music clearances they will have to pay for.

Sadly, MPI has not done business with Sony before so I am not sure it's going to happen through them either. Mary Owen has been trying for a long time to have Sony let MPI have Seasons 6-8 of The Donna Reed Show but stubborn Sony won't budge.

And that's exactly why Antenna TV does those credit crunches. To discourage people from recording the shows for a collection.

What I might do, while ODAAT is still being aired, is DVR and save some favorite episodes. I've already DVR'd and saved the final two episodes, Nearness Of You and Off We Go. I might DVR a few more.

For now, I'm glad at least that the 1st season is out on DVD. It's actually my favorite season. Just too bad it's a short season with only 14 episodes. Each of the nine seasons has a share of good episodes, but I didn't like the show as much after Richard Masur left. He and Bonnie Franklin were good together.

The credit crunches don't bother everyone. I can only speak for myself, and if I was trying to record a series of shows for a collection, the credit crunches would irritate me. In the case of One Day At A Time, Antenna TV edits the episodes along with the credit crunches, so there are two strikes against them as far as recording the entire series is concerned. I have the 1st season DVD from Sony. While Antenna TV still airs the episodes, I'll DVR and save some of my other favorite episodes. That will be good enough for me. I agree. I'll take edited over nothing at all.
I recorded every single episode of ODAAT on my DVR when it first began running on Antenna TV.
I hadn't watched the show in years, and I thought I better record it before it goes back into retirement. It was never my all-time favorite show, but I do remember watching it as a teen when it aired originally so I was feeling nostalgic.
I got most of the first cycle before they started credit crunching. I think they started credit crunching towards the end of the run (around season 7) so I can't help that.
I put all of them in order by season. However, I missed about 7 episodes the first time,(the Mother's Day marathon really screwed me up) but I got the missing episodes on their second run, so they are on their own special disc.
All 9 seasons are now on 29 discs. I recorded the first 2 seasons in SP mode, and the rest in LP mode. I imagine I would have used twice as many discs if I recorded them all in SP mode.
I figured the show would eventually come out on DVD so why waste a bunch of discs on edited episodes. Now I'm not so sure it will come out on DVD, so I'm glad I have what I got.
I edited out all the commericals so the running times average around 22 mins. and even shorter after the credit crunch (21:30).
I could've bought a bootleg set, but I'm a collector by nature. I find recording and collecting them myself is much more fun and rewarding---and I'm more likely to actually watch them.
So, although it is not a perfect set, I also feel it is better than nothing at all.

As long as it's running edited for free on a network I get, there's no need for me to buy an edited set. (I have no idea on how to make one). So I I'll continue to record, watch, delete and wait and see if it ever gets released. If it disappears again, I'll have to re-evaluate. However, if someone offered me an unedited set now, I'd just get it over with.

I think Shout will release the complete series this year. After all, there aren't too many shows that lasted 9 seasons left to complete. We've seen shows with only 1 season out get released fully after awhile. We just have to be patient. I really hope Shout will release this soon. I will not watch the credit crunched version on Antenna TV. I find it odd that Shout could release the complete series of Mart Hartman but not this. I would think this would be more popular and would sell more than Mary Hartman.

But way more episodes,
325 for MH
209 for ODAAT

And I don't think it went 3 seasons:

[Original release January 5, 1976 – May 10, 1977]

Remember, it aired daily.

I have a speculation I've floated here before, but I'll do it again. Putting aside season one sales figures, right in the middle of season two is an Elton John song that must be mega expensive to license , yet the show fans would expect it to be there. It might just be a coincidence, but that can't help.

I did the math on that. If season 1 came out 2007, and season 2 would be 2016, that's a nine year pace. So....

Season 3-2025
Season 4-2034
Season 5-2043
Season 6-2052

Season 8-2070
Season 9- and Schneider's moving to Florida in 2079

I remember when the S1 set was released in 2007. I looked at it in several stores and at the time the cheapest price here was $38.99. Many people would have found that pretty steep, especially since there is only 15 episodes on it. When Sony released Charlie's Angels, the retail price was only $4 more than that for 24 hour-long episodes, so ODAAT was WAY overpriced. I still bought it then because I wanted it really bad, but I can see the casual fans passing on it, especially since it was not even the best season. I think that hurt chances of future releases, as well as the music costs associated with S2. I have a home made set so am grateful for that, but still wish I had an official one to complete my Norman Lear library.

The episode not just had a performance of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Valerie Bertinelli and McKenzie Phillips. Bonnie Franklin also sang "On the Good Ship Lollipop", and another character sang "Mr. Wonderful" (show tune from a Broadway musical starring Sammy Davis Jr.) If "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was expensive enough - good luck licensing "Mr. Wonderful" and "On the Good Ship Lollipop" on top of that!

How many popular songs did "The Brady Bunch" incorporate in its soundtrack? Regarding "ODAAT", we're talking *three* popular songs in that single season two episode - two show tunes and a pop song from the time of episode broadcast - to license for DVD. Basically a "WKRP" costly type of situation.

I wish you wouldn't go on the boards calling me stupid. I was just pointing out a fact that ODAAT would have to be digitally remastered from the source tapes in order for it to be on Netflix. Alice was digitally remastered to high definition to be on DVD and therefore is on a streaming service. If ODAAT were remastered, then there is a possibility. That's all I am saying. I messaged Shout Factory on FB about getting ODAAT. While they said there are no concrete plans, they have said that it's been a popular request title which means that perhaps the demand is there that they might go there at some point. With the new series on Netflix and reruns on Logo, perhaps the time might be right to do what they did with Maude, Facts Of Life, Jeffersons and All In The Family and put out a box set with the complete series. I know I'd be in for it on day one.

I think it's just a question of time until the complete series gets a DVD release. It's a Norman Lear sitcom and basically ran the same length of time like All In The Family, 9 seasons and 200 episodes. I'm surprised that Mary Hartman got a complete series release and One Day At A Time is still in a waiting pattern.

I know. I'm not really that interested in Mary Hartman but I want a One Day at a Time release really bad. Shout also needs to release a complete series of Archie Bunker's Place. Shout released a lot of good complete series sets in 2014 and 2015 but nothing good since then. They finished up Newhart in 2016 into 2017 and now they seem to be working on finishing up Diff'rent Strokes which should hopefully be done in early 2018. I just hope some of these other shows will get complete series releases soon.

I like Mary Hartman and I bought the DVD set when it came out, but I have to say that the 1st season (episodes 1 to 130) is much better than the 2nd season (episodes 131 to 325.) Aside from the decline in the quality of the writing, part of the problem with season 2 is that Bruce Solomon (Sgt. Foley) is absent for most of the season. He came back towards the end but it was already too late, the series was on the way out and Louise Lasser wanted out too.

I would like to see the follow up series to Mary Hartman, Forever Fernwood, get released on DVD. That series is pretty good but I haven't seen any signs that it's being issued.

Mary Hartman, as a Soap Opera Spoof HAD to have a complete series release due to the narrative.

At this point, what will happen first - Norman Lear dying or ODAAT complete series-additional seasons coming out on DVD? Be nice if it came out before he dies - he's like 94!

If you really want to get depressed, go to Amazon and search One Day at a Time blu ray. You'll see seasons 2-9 outlines just sitting there.

Problem is we'd need a lot of support and interest

Last time I looked, there's only about a dozen active regulars here for ODAAT...but we know the show still has tons of fans...

Maybe the tons of ODAAT fans are afraid to post BECAUSE of the crazy regulars here!!  :D

I really hope Shout releases ODAAT as a complete series. Sounds like they are seriously looking into it. And now that Sony is apparently back in the picture, maybe it is just a matter of time.

I hope Norman Lear lives to see a complete series release of One Day at a Time. All his other shows are complete. I really hope he lives to at least 100. That would be something. It's amazing he's outlived most of the stars of his shows.

That is true but it seems to me that One Day At A Time is a more popular show than Mary Hartman is, that's why I'm surprised that Mary Hartman got the DVD release. I'm glad that Shout Factory released it because I was eager to see the series again, especially the excellent 1st season. It's too bad the excellence didn't carry over into season 2, the 2nd season is blah for the most part.

I hope One Day at a Time gets released very soon as a complete series. It is long overdue.

None have been reported, although supposedly 2 episodes are cut syndication versions due to issues with the condition of the original master tapes. (Although they aired in Canada uncut - those dub tapes must have been wiped at some point.)

‘So Long Mom’ is definitely cut. The box set version starts later then the version LOGO showed.

I remember thinking one the ‘The Married Man’ eps was cut when I was watching , but I’m more hazy on that one....

Could the master have been damaged between the time it was sourced to make LOGO's "print" and the set given to SHOUT?

Somebody screwed up at Sony perhaps. Wouldn't be the first or last time, either when it came to the studio's holdings.
