Zoneboy 09-15-2015, 01:12 PM Who's Elton John?
I was looking at DVD's & VHS while 2 girls who looked to be in their late teens or early 20's were browsing through the CD's. One of them picked up a copy of Elton John's greatest hits and asked the other Who's Elton John? I had to turn and walk away because I was trying to conceal my laughter. It's hard to believe that someone wouldn't know who Elton John is but considering her age I guess it's possible.

I knew about Elton John since 1988...well, a little bit. I was only a kid and I knew these musicians a little. It's sad that soon many of these musicians will fade away...
I remember when the joke about kids was that they would ask "Paul McCartney was in a group before Wings?"

I seriously doubt that kids today even know what "Wings" is.
ABlairican Pie 09-15-2015, 05:52 PM At Ozzfest in 2006, I was bragging to a bunch of teenagers that I met Tony Iommi the year before at Ozzfest 2005. They asked "WHO??"
They started making jokes and at that point, I didn't think it was even worth the effort to explain who he was--at OZZFEST, of all places. ohno:
DJM77 09-15-2015, 06:48 PM It happens. I don't think there's an entertainer who is on everyone's radar no matter how popular they are. My mom is 72 and I seriously doubt that she knows who Elton John is. I remember not long after Michael Jackson died, my friend was telling me about how he mentioned Michael Jackson to his neighbor and his neighbor said "Who is that?"

Kids today, nope. I was just showing my age, referencing an old joke.

I think there is one entertainer whose name would be recognized by almost anyone even though he's been dead for almost 40 years. I'm referring of course to Elvis!

I won't be surprised a teen or young adult will ask..."Who's Elvis? Is he that guy who works at the drug store"?
gidgetgrape 09-16-2015, 05:52 PM The generation gap is what I thought was funny about Taylor Swift bringing out Joan Baez (http://www.hngn.com/articles/119968/20150817/taylor-swift-invites-joan-baez-and-julia-roberts-onstage-during-concert.htm) at one of her concerts. I'm an 80s kid and I barely know Joan Baez.
Some people don't know and don't care though. When I was in college, I saw a sorority girl arranging some flyers with Audrey Hepburn on them. I said, "Oh, I like Audrey Hepburn too!" She said, "Who?" It turns out she had put Audrey on the flyers only because she liked her picture.
OH Nuts! 09-17-2015, 07:19 AM When I hear about stuff like this it makes me realize I'm no spring chicken. I was 14 when Elton John came out with Your Song, and I've been captivated by much of his music ever since.
He's very witty and a good actor too. I've seen him on Will & Grace and Saturday Night Live.

He was also in "Tommy" with his rendition of "Pinball Wizard".
I also heard he has poked fun at himself with his homosexuality, his biggest influence is Liberache. And as a Millenial...I know who Liberache is as well as Frank Sinatra!
1960'sTVfan 09-18-2015, 05:33 PM Maybe the girl knows who Elton John is, and was BS'ing the other girl when she asked who he was.
Conversely, it wouldn't surprise me if she really doesn't know who Elton John is. Kids nowadays are totally oblivious to anything outside their generation.
Dude111 09-24-2015, 02:59 AM I was looking at DVD's & VHS while 2 girls who looked to be in their late teens or early 20's were browsing through the CD's.Im proud of you for looking @ VHS tapes also buddy!!
And yes alot of young ppl are blinded from how good the past was.......
visaman666 09-24-2015, 03:52 AM The first 45 (member those?) I bought was Blue Eyes by EJ. The next one was Valley Girl by Moon Unit Zappa. Am I aging myself?
ABlairican Pie 09-24-2015, 06:07 PM I seriously doubt that kids today even know what "Wings" is.
They'd probably ask, "Bone-in" or "boneless"? "Buffalo or Honey Barbecue?"
ohno:
James28 10-03-2015, 03:05 PM Soon we're going to have a whole generation of people who do not know ( or do not want to know) what certain things are. They'll probably (intentionally) fail their history classes at school. That could anger the people who are not willing to have time to explain to such a generation what those things are, because that would result in fights and/or bullying. That generation would most likely be the Millennials (aka Generation Y), or maybe Generation Z (those born in the mid-1990s or after).

My guess would be Generation Z.
Most of the Y Generation in a way like some of the things the Boomers grew-up on such as The Beatles and I Love Lucy (I went to school with a Gen Y couple who was into ILL).
The Z Generation (1995-now) will probably be the trouble-makers. They aren't rightfully disciplined, they don't take orders that much, and they have the devil-may-care concept! Gen Z will ask "Who are The Beatles...a bug"? Or not see that The Simpsons of the 90's had quality. Gen Z grew-up on Justin Bieber and Reality Shows which have no quality!
And trust me on the Gen Z thing...I have to encounter the **** they give me every day when I'm working or going somewhere, especially the High School Students. I was on the bus with a group of them going home on Monday and only a handfull were quiet and just going home...the others were talking-up a storm with ZERO respect for the non-school passengers. The other is cleaning-up after them...they use the basement in the church hall and have everything unorganized and I'm not the only one who has a bone to pick at them...the organizer for our tutoring program wishes that the kids would put things back like they should...they don't!
If I or anyone in my generation would pull something like that...we'd get disciplined! You can't even do that either nowadays...or so it seems.
IllinoisTVFan 10-07-2015, 04:15 PM I know some younger kids who know who older acts are. My one assistant at church is 13 and loves Elvis and her best friend love Michael Jackson so there is hope. However, yeah too many are ignorant of the past. A few years ago I went into Best Buy looking for the Duran Duran DVD of their videos and the guy working there asked me who "he" was because he didn't know "his" music. The guy then asked me if they were anything like Backstreet Boys or Nsync. I said no, they play instruments like the Beatles and the guy said he wasn't much into insects. I wish I was kidding and hope this guy was because that is truly scary.
Schmoopie 05-02-2016, 05:44 AM I used to put tons of pictures of Audrey Hepburn up at work and I swear not one person recognized her. Just blew my mind. Even before I fell in love with her movies and her personality, I knew who she was.
Edward216 05-04-2016, 12:59 AM I don't know it is what it is. I mean the artists we heard and listened to growing up grow older and fall out of popularity and their songs aren't played on current radio. So of course younger generations won't know who they are, it's just the way things go. You can either try to educate somebody about a singer or a band from a different time or you can ignore the fact they don't know them, because really after all it doesn't affect you one way or the other.
My thing is that I've usually known who the current popular artists are but I haven't always liked them so a lot of times people will think I'm weird. Sometimes I have different tastes than the mainstream and I'm OK with that. It used to bother me that I didn't like what was popular and other people didn't like what I liked but not anymore. If I enjoy it and get something out of it that's all that matter to me. Yeah sometimes I bring up a singer or band I've discovered with other people because I think they'll enjoy them but if it turns out they don't, for me it's not the end of the world.
And the last few years I've been finding artists in all kinds of styles of music that you'd never hear on the radio and I'm loving it.
Ed.
Nordy 05-04-2016, 01:29 AM I have a similar situation. My wife is about only 4 1/2 years younger than me but our styles in music, TV, movies is basically like oil and water. We don't have cable in our house so we watch a lot of MeTv and Antenna TV along with Network channels. I of course watch Kojak, One Day At A Time, and other shows pretty religiously but she has no idea why I like these shows because they are so "old" My wife always asks me when I watch Carson who is so and so or why are you laughing at the monologue?? I had to laugh one time we were watching Newhart and saw an episode with Don Rickles and she said "isn't that the guy that insults everyone??" Yes dear...lol.
