View Full Version : This episode confirmed that Edith Bunker was the dumbest TV Mom in Sitcom History
TVFactFan 08-10-2015, 09:46 PM LOL this Loony Toon goes to the bank to get a loan so she can buy Archie a TV. So she was trying to get $500 and the loan officer asked her how much does she have in her 3 bank accounts combined? This dipsh*T says $78
And had a nerve to get mad when she was turned down for the loan. How did she think would lean her money and she was barely working and had very little in the bank? Then she gets mad and decided to close her 3 accounts at the bank because she was denied for the loan
Then she comes the f*CK home and ask Archie to loan her $500:lol: So she is buying him a gift with his own money
Edith was that SPECIAL KIND OF STUPID:crazy:
Rewound50 08-11-2015, 11:39 AM I think you have to remember how much people were struggling back in the 70's. If you were not in the working class segment of society at that point, the 70's were very hard on middle class America. It was difficult to get any kind of loan because people were not making enough to have any kind of serious collateral in goods or property.
You also have to note Edith was from that generation that deferred to the man of the house. She was not stupid in the least. Society was still in it's infancy of recognizing women and minorities. And her conformity to those social biases played on her ability to function effectively when attempting to step outside those traditional roles. She had the means, but not the experience.
Edith was not dumb in the slightest because she was not afraid to step outside that stereotype and try to express her own individuality. Even in the face of utter failure she didn't back down from trying. Today's generation could use some Ediths in their crowd.

I'm sorry but she was dumb for the reasons below
1. Trying to get a loan from the bank with very little money in her account
2. Asking Archie to lean her money so she could buy him a gift with his own money
Lol
Rewound50 08-11-2015, 01:15 PM ^^^ Banks don't loan you $500 because you don't already have it in other accounts. Banks allow you to borrow based on your credit score, collateral, and income. Edith did not have the experience to know this when she went into the bank. That doesn't make her dumb, that makes her inexperienced. And her asking Archie for the money was a social statement for the day and actually in current times as well. There are plenty of older couples where the spouse was/is the work-at-home parent and the other works a regular job to bring home the income. That is called marital income. They share that money together. At any rate, this story was about her attempting to step outside those circumstances and collect it by doing it herself. That is the point. You're missing the social message in that. It's about breaking stereotypes of the day.

She had no income or no collateral and was too old to be that stupid
visaman666 08-11-2015, 10:36 PM Credit was very difficult to get back then, and if you were a woman, forget it. Even wealthy women had to get a man to co-sign for bank loan.

But when she asked Archie to lend her money to buy him a gift I was too done:lol:
Rewound50 08-12-2015, 10:07 AM She had no income or no collateral and was too old to be that stupid
She is married to Archie and has a home, hence there is collateral, assuming they have equity in the house. In those days many people were out of work and the jobs they had only offered them income to live paycheck to paycheck. If you only knew how uninformed most people are about lending institutions, you probably would never make such a statement regarding her oversight in asking for one. This is not something you figure out through the aging process. LOL! You either involve yourself with it or you have no idea. Even having done it previously doesn't make you a good judge of the offer on the table. And her asking Archie for the money is something that is clearly going over your head. You take things at face value without understanding context of the day and quite honestly how some marriages work to this day.
cleverfun3000 08-12-2015, 08:57 PM She wasn't all THAT stupid. She figured out how much Archie owes her for the work she did around the house for the last 30 years at the rate of a dollar a week and instead of borrowing the $500 from him, she charged him that amount and said that he could pay her the rest ($1,500) at the rate of $5 per week.

Yeah!! Thank you!! They were stuck with each other!!! Back than people didn't get divorced that easy! Married people just stuck together. Even if the man was cheating , or the wife even. As long as it wasn't known to their family and friends. Married couples stayed together even if they HATED each other. It was either for Religious reasons or like a pride thing!
But no way would Archie ever divorce Edith, she was like his property!

You may have a point because my grandparents slept in separate rooms
Lol lol lol lol
Yeah, pretty sure Archie needed Edith a whole lot more than the other way around.

I and my wife are in our late 40's and been married 14 years and sleep in seperate rooms. When we were first married, we slept together and did not like it. For myself, except for two or three one night stands, I have never really slept with a woman or anyone else. I snore loudly and roll around in bed every 15 minutes. She snores some herself, makes weird noises, like teeth grinding sounds, and she hogs the bed. I try not to snore because I want her to rest.
My parents sleep in different rooms. Cool thing is that.....you can visit each other's room. Like a date....have sex, snuggle....whatever. Sleeping in seperate rooms does not mean that the love has gone away.
Torgo 08-15-2015, 11:41 AM You may have a point because my grandparents slept in separate rooms
Lol lol lol lol
Mine did too! Though maybe my grandpa wanted his own room because of all the creepy Victorian dolls my grandmother had.

True. Everyone's different. My wife and I have been married for 20 years, and when she's gone over night I sometimes have a hard time falling asleep in an empty bed.

A lot of times I sleep in the spare bedroom . I tend to have insomnia, and I'm up and down from the bed a lot or rolling over trying to get comfortable. And if I start to feel like I'm not going to sleep well, I go in the other room, so my husband can get a good nights sleep! ;) That way I can get out of the bed whenever I want , put the light on and not feel bad that I am keeping somebody else from sleeping! :)

I collect Raggedy Ann dolls and other rag dolls like that! ;) I think they are cute and sweet!;) Those old Victorian looking dolls are spooky! But I found out that doll from the movie Conjouring and Annabelle in real life wasn't a scary Victorian doll , it was based on a true story about a haunted Raggedy Ann doll! I was like OH NO!!!!
Here is the real Annabelle doll !

Yeah, it's understandable why they changed it for the movie though. The Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls I don't think are scary, I even had some of their books. My grandmother's dolls, plus the chomping dolls in Barbarella is probably what added to my doll phobia. And my wife even has one that's the size of a child. I freaking hate that thing. When I first stayed over in her apartment, she had it in her room, sitting in a little chair. It doesn't bother her at all, but me, nope, she had to put it in the closet for me. Now she keeps it in her crafts/sewing room. I don't go in that room alone haha
Bonniegirl 08-15-2015, 12:35 PM Solomon! Sorry this thread got so off topic about Edith Bunker!
BUT!!
Torgo , how about Amish dolls that have no faces? That's kind of creepy. Well not creepy just strange maybe? They say if a doll has a face it's vanity! So the little girls have a doll they can play with and cuddle. But without a face? IDK if I'd like a doll like that?

Yong Fang 08-15-2015, 11:59 PM $500 in 1975 dollars is about $3000 today (pulling figure out of keester). A TV costing that much? A very nice, huge flatscreen TV is about $1500 in 2015 money, while one can buy a nice sized set for about $500, again 2015 dollars.
How much was one of those large 25 inch color floor units inside a wood cabinet would be in 1975 (or when the episode was on between '71 and '79, using '75 as a midpoint) cost?
As an aside, I dislike the new TVs and how they hang like a picture on a wall. I like the 1970's-80's floor model, cabinet like sets, mwhere people can put pictures and crap on top. Do they still make those?

Floor Models were only for if you lived in a HOUSE. So if today was Aug 15, 1975 I would not have one at all
biffbronson 08-16-2015, 01:39 AM I think we got our second color floor model in the mid-'70s. (My uncle was a TV fan and I'm certain he'd bought our first one by 1966 or so.)
Ours may not have been quite as big as a 25-inch that Yong Fang refers to, so it's hard to answer his question. We would always have a Zenith or RCA, and I doubt very much that we paid more than $200 or $300, maybe even less. We always placed an electric radio on top, so there was our entertainment center...! Big antenna strapped to the chimney.
There were 6 of us living in the house, so sometimes one or more of us would turn on a little Sharp brand black & white tv in the other room to watch something different. Rabbit-ears antenna on that one. No remote for either at that time for us.

I find them kind of scary!!! !!!! I know it's Amish tradition , and I LOVE Amish people and their traditions usually, but IDK about a doll without a face! It reminds me of Billy Idols song "Eyes without a face" But a really scary version "DOLLS WITHOUT A FACE"!
I think if I was a little girl and had one of these I'd draw a face on her, and than promptly get shunned by my Amish community probably! :( :D

On a Let's Make a Deal episode from the 70s, they were pricing one of those floor units as $800. A hell of a lot of money back then considering minimum wage was $1.60 an hour in the early 70s. I should also add that it was like a 25" color TV and record player combo, so that could be what really drove the price up. If just the TV alone cost $500, that would make sense to me. Still a lot of money.
Of course, that was a game show retail price. Usually they came up with a higher figure on game shows than what you would actually pay in a store.
If Archie had $500 to give Edith for a TV in the 70s, he wasn't doing too bad. A lot of money back then.

rusty spike 08-01-2023, 04:41 AM This was a terrible episode. I hated the initial premise: The TV was on fritz and Archie acted like he could care less which is absurd as most men would watch SOMETHING after a long day's work.
And yes Edith was naive about loans and how credit works. And I agree that the bank loan officer was a total ass and very demeaning. However, I didn't care for the little spats that Edith had after it was explained that she didn't qualify for a 500 dollar loan. Truth is that she would have qualified so long as Archie, the person who holds a full-time job, would have co-signed it. Instead she was freaking out that she had been turned down.
In previous episodes it seems that Edith would have understood that you need more than a part time job~ 10 hours doesn't cut it. I think she would have realized that she would need two years to save 5 bucks a week to buy an elaborate gift (New TV set) for an anniversary.
BestTVever 08-01-2023, 07:04 AM Edith's heart was always in the right place. She wasn't dumb. She was just very naïve and sometimes misguided.
Exactly. She was not dumb or stupid. Naive sometimes for sure.
I am surprised no one mentioned how sexist this episode was. When it was in syndication it made a major fuss. A woman gets turned down for a simple loan for a few hundred dollars. Her credit is tied to her spouse. Both are treated equally even though she may not have worked. Yet the episode discarded her because she did not work. A loan is based on your credit history. While Archie was not rich, he did not have bad credit. It appeared that Edith was turned down because she was a non-working woman.

Nope, as George Jefferson said, "banks dont let money to people who need money, THATS WHAT PAWN SHOPS IS FOR":lol::lol::lol:
TheLittleFaerie 08-05-2023, 02:58 AM I mean Edith barely ever got out of the house, never worked outside the home, always depended on a man, she just didn't realize how business worked.... She took it personally when the loan officer said she didn't work

Edith just didn't realize a lot how business worked, and had sorta a childlike mentality... When I was a kid, I also literally thought you could just go to the bank and request money and they would just HAND it to you lol I also thought you could just write a check even if you didn't have money.. Once my mom said she had NO money and I told her, "Just write a check!" lol then she explained to me that you had to have money to back the check lol

True but the episode was a bit ridiculous. Many/most women did not work back then. She easily could have opened a charge account at the store with Archie's credit. But they wanted to make a point with the show. They wanted to show how women were treated differently than men. Its not like she was asking for a loan for a new house. It was for a TV. I have not seen the episode for awhile but I think she wanted her own account to be a secret and surprise for Archie. House wives were definitely put in an odd situation back then.
TVFactFan 08-05-2023, 09:56 PM I had to watch this episode again since all of the discussion
I'm more irritated than I was before. Edith definitely had a brain full of oatmeal
The loan officer ask her does she work full-time and she says YES not realizing that he was asking does she receive full-time pay since she has no money in the bank to cover the $500 loan
Then she comes home and ask Archie for money he doesnt have and starts acting like a lunatic around the house
I would have filed for divorce:lol:
Janice Johnson 08-06-2023, 05:10 AM I honestly thought this thread was going to be about Edith letting a random Stranger in her house when she was home alone who was posing as a Detective, but was actually a Rapist who tried to rape her!
I felt Edith was being incredibly naive in that episode, letting a random Stranger in her home when she was home alone. The guy even looked sketchy from the get go! He looked like a creep, not a nice guy. Edith should have gotten a glaring red flag red alert the second she saw him!

Which is where she would have ended up buying him a used televsion for $78, until he would have eventually caved and bought a new television set. I love how the television writers just expects us to overlook the reality of the situation and automatically go into an outrage. During hard times, banks are a little "funny" about just handing out random loans.
