View Full Version : Richard Masur
1960'sTVfan 07-28-2015, 10:25 AM I like the 1st season episodes with Richard Masur, I think he and Bonnie F. were a good pair and looked good together. But after season 1, Richard was gone. Does anyone know why he left the show? Did they kick him off because he wanted more money? Or was it something else?
'80sSitcoms 07-28-2015, 10:45 AM I don't know why (I'm assuming they just wanted Ann to be single for a while), but jeez he looks old for 26! lol...I would have guessed he was in his mid-30s! He's one of those people who just look older than they really are when they're younger.

He did look older than 26! I guess they figured that would work with Ann who looked younger than she was! Yeah I think the story line would have gotten too old after a while with David, he would put a damper on Ann's other admirers and dating life! :)
'80sSitcoms 07-29-2015, 08:32 AM I always thought Ann looked older than she was, lol.
Samme 07-29-2015, 09:35 AM There's a long interview with Masur in the current Shock Cinema magazine.
www.shockcinemamagazine.com Five bucks in stores and six by mail.
Only good magazine I know that is anywhere near that cheap. (Well, really, I don't know of any other good magazines that are still worth buying.) It comes out at least twice a year and always has four or five interviews with retro stars, plus book and film reviews. Sounds like I'm doing a commercial, but it's the only magazine I still buy. And, in spite of the title, it's not a magazine about gore or slasher movies.
Masur gives a long answer about leaving, but basically says there was no where else to go with the character and he wanted out.
mstewart 07-29-2015, 10:41 AM I thought David and Ann made a better pair than her and Sam. David was too whiny and clingy.
Am I supposed to assume Ann and David have gone past the "toe curling" stage?
billybatts 07-30-2015, 01:04 AM I thought they should have ended up together at the end of the series.
A couple of 70/80s sitcoms ended with the main characters in questionable relationships.

Yeah there was "toe curling"! Ann finally let him "curl her toes" after she caught him in bed with that other woman from the building! Remember? That ep should be coming up. LOL David was "Thirsty" LOL and Ann wasn't putting out and the neighbor was apparently" thirsty "too. Ann and Schneider went into David's apt. because Ann was worried , she thought David was sick, because his car was at the building and he wasn't answering his phone . So she ended up catching him in bed with another woman!

That ep always bothered me because was uncharacteristic of David, It came out of nowhere, and really made no sense.

WHAT!!!!! ?????? It made a lot of sense ! it was 1975-76 or whatever ! Before HIV ! A guy in his mid 20's who isn't getting anything from the woman he is dating ( and loves) ! Yes, David really did love Ann I think? ;) Anyway, he was young, it was back in the day, and a pretty lady was offering!!!! How does that not make sense ?????? I think any guy in his position back than would have "jumped on it" LOL No pun intended !! :D

That's where my question came from. He's listed at 21 episodes, which is only about 2 weeks in Antenna time. They obviously weren't in a committed, exclusive relationship, as evidenced by her and the pilot in episode two. So it was either just a friendship, with him wanting more, a friends with benefits deal, or an open relationship. Tough for me to get a read on it.
visaman666 07-31-2015, 02:31 AM Richard Masur also played the "********" bag boy on an episode of AITF. He also played a child pornographer in a TV movie. I could never to take him after that.
visaman666 07-31-2015, 02:39 AM If I remember, the two of them where in a car accident in the pilot episode, they were never really lovers.

I only say it didn't make sense because of the way he was fawning all over Ann. Not just for affection but he wanted a relationship.
It wasn't like he was dumb or a playboy, why would he go and sleep with the woman in the same building if he cared anything about her?
Seemed like they jumped the shark there.

He always creeped me out and you just made me remember why.

Has it been mentioned here he was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1995-1999.

Oh wow. I didn't know that! That's pretty cool! ;)
Richard Masur also played Brenda Morgenstern's boyfriend on Rhoda! Nick Lobo an accordion player ! :D He played a totally different character as Nick than he did as David. He was a conceited jerk who strung Brenda along. ( Kind of the opposite of David and Ann) LOL!! Brenda was in love with him and he just came over for "toe curling" pretty much, and if I remember he did take her out but didn't show up or broke dates and stuff like that! :( And Rhoda didn't like him! I kind of remember an ep where it really hit the fan because Nick dropped his accordion on Rhoda's foot and broke her toe!!
So he really is a good actor, if you think about it. Playing a mentally challenged young man in All in the family, a groveling nice guy lawyer in ODAAT, and a conceited musican in Rhoda! ;)
I never saw the movie that he played that photographer. I glad I didn't! ;)

See I see him as being more realistic by being with that other woman. Stuff like that happens! I Know he loved Ann and really wanted a relationship with her , and I'm sure he wouldn't be with that other woman if Ann was giving him some lovin'! :D
He really thought Ann wouldn't find out, and it was just a physical thing with that other woman. The big dummy needed to move his car from under Ann's window if he was pretending to be out at a business meeting! LOL! That's when Ann thought something happened that he suddenly got ill or hurt and didn't make it to the meeting and got Schneider to let her in his apartment! OMG!!!! That was a good ep. I thought. It's coming up this Sunday I believe! ;)
I forget, why Ann was looking out the window in the first place though?
'80sSitcoms 07-31-2015, 05:43 PM Here's a photo of him as a mature man. I've often noticed that "bear-ish" types of men look so much older than they really are when they're younger, and when they reach their late 30s or 40s, they finally look like their age.
Like I said earlier, Richard looked seemed more like mid-30s than 26 (!) on ODAAT, but when he grew into his 40s he really grew into his "bear look", lol.

Bonniegirl 07-31-2015, 05:45 PM Oh wow!!! LOL for a minute there I thought that big picture was Johnny Cash!!
He looks good with the beard. Yeah you are right about men that are big like that, look older when they are young. Even kids. Did you ever have a really big and tall kid in your class that looked much older than all of the rest of the class?
I wonder how tall he is and what his weight was? He really was a big guy, esp. in comparison with petite Ann. That actually was kind of cute, him being so big and her being so tiny!
cleverfun3000 07-31-2015, 07:43 PM David decided to break up with Ann because he wanted children. . .and she did NOT.
Bonniegirl 07-31-2015, 08:40 PM David decided to break up with Ann because he wanted children. . .and she did NOT.
Oh yeah . That's right. It was after he got that new job in California and Ann and the girls were going to go with him, and than he sprung it on Ann about having kids! ;) But I thought it was her actually breaking up with him? By not going to California after all?
OOliver 07-31-2015, 10:08 PM Didn't he join the cast of RHODA as a semi-regular right around the time he left ODAAT? Or was he in both shows at the same time? I enjoyed Massur on RHODA, not as much on ODAAT.

I'm thinking he was on Rhoda first. He was Brenda's boyfriend in the earlier eps I think? Not 100 percent sure though!
Bonniegirl 11-22-2015, 03:37 PM Just thought I'd bump this thread up, since we are back to the beginning with David in season 1 !If anyone is watching again and wants to add anything!
