For me the ultimate is The Carol Burnett Show. The Family, Mrs. Wiggins, and all the characters made this a wonderful show!

Does Saturday Night Live count as variety? If so, that one.

I have a Top-16 List for Variety/Sketch TV Shows...

1-Big Chuck and Little John (Only seen in Cleveland)
2-Chappelle's Show (I dunno if this is a variety show, but if it is it has a twist)!
3-Monty Python (Same here)
4-Ed Sullivan
5-SNL
6-Laugh-In (This may be the first show that is inspired by sketch comedy)
7-Carol Burnett
8-Smothers Brothers (It would be high, but they got cancelled suddenly)!
9-Flip Wilson
10-Wayne Brady Show (It was a summer replacement, but enjoyable)!
11-Ray Stevens Show (Same scenario)!
12-Dean Martin Show
13-Your Show of Shows (The predecessor of SNL).
14-You Can't Do That On Television (I dunno if this show counts either)
15-In Living Color
16-SCTV

what's WAYNE & SCHUSTER?

Wayne & Shuster were Johnny Wayne & Frank Shuster. They starred in the longest-running variety show in Canadian TV history, appearing on CBC from the 1950s until Wayne's death in 1990. They also hold the record---which will never be broken--- ---for the most guest appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" (67!).

More fun trivia: Frank Shuster's cousin Joe was one of the original creators of Superman.

Out Of Control - This was a short-lived variety show on Nickelodeon that aired in 1984, starring Dave Coulier. It was weird but there wasn't anything like it on TV at the time.

Anyone remember "Hollywood Palace"?

In terms of longevity, I guess the most successful variety show was Lawrence Welk.

After re-studying my list again today, I suddenly remembered another show that I forgot to include in this group. If I had remembered it earlier I would have put it solidly in the #3 spot. That would be "Sha Na Na" the 1950s-style music group who had their own syndicated series in the 1970s around the same time in which they appeared in the movie "Grease".

I checked a DVD set out of my library the other day called "The Best of The Danny Kaye Show". It contains 6 episodes of the variety show that Danny Kaye hosted on CBS from 1963-67. I've watched 3 episodes so far and enjoyed them.

I haven't watched much of variety shows but the two I'd want to see most are Ed Sullivan and American Bandstand.

It's gotta be "Carol Burnett"! And for talk show, I'd go with "Johnny Carson."
