That was very disturbing, I have to agree! This "Sonny boy" routine was before my time. really old! Was Sonny boy supposed to be a girl and Father wished he was a son? What was up with the wig? I am going to google it. But this ep. was really weird! And also where was Barbara? I think this was the only time Barbara was never on? Am I right?

yes I noticed she was missing in that episode. She missed a total of 4 episodes during the series. One during season 8 and 9 and two episodes from the first 2 or 3 seasons

LOL!! Ann could have worn the wig and sat on Schneider's lap and been a better " Sonny Boy"!!! It really would have been less weird IMO!!!!

Yeah! Mark was playing the piano ( that they just rolled in to Ann's apartment like it was nothing) and encouraged Alex to wear the wig and sit on Schneider's lap and be "Sonny boy"! Very weird ep!!!

The routine was also done on The Bob Newhart show with "The Peeper" singing the song, with Bob sitting on his knee. Emily was horrified by the spectacle

I didn't get to see the One Day At A Time episode, but Amen had an episode where Ernie was dressed like a little kid with a wig on and he was sitting on Rolly's lap while Rolly sang "Sonny Boy" to him. I think they were doing a talent show or something. It was definitely a strange and disturbing sight.

I had joked this was the worst ep because it was the only one without Val, but from what I read here, and from what I remember (I didn't see it yesterday), it might really be the worst one.

Nanette Fabray guest starred in an episode of Maude and played an old college pal of Maude's. They did a Sonny Boy routine at their reunion.

The scene with Alex sitting on Schneider's lap has to be the worst scene in TV SITCOM HISTORY

Obviously you did not see Ann's pathetically sad and disturbing impression of Shirley Temple from early in the show's run in the episode of the first "variety show" at the old folks' home, where she nauseatingly spouts out "On the Good Ship Lollipop". THAT was the worst moment in the history of television.

(Maybe you did see it, but I said obviously you didn't to emphasize my point, lol)

I can appreciate vaudeville and old timey entertainment, but the whole "Sonny Boy" routine fell so flat and was not funny in one instant, no matter how often Ann laughed. Talk about dated!

Watched it. I should have noticed who the OP was, and realized it wasn't that bad. But no more buying trips to Chicago with the boss, okay?

The scene with Alex sitting on Schneider's Lap has to be the worst scene in TV SITCOM HISTORY:lol:

I don't know if it's the worst scene ever, but it was bad. More embarrassing and cringe worthy than anything else. Alex was a teenager, too old to be sitting on a man's lap. And that hideous wig he had to wear only made it worse. That "Sonny Boy" tune was very dated as well, it goes back to the days of Al Jolson.

Alex was all gung ho to do the show with Schneider, but his tune sure changed after he got the offer from the girl. Alex was like "the hell with Schneider, I'm going with the girl!" I thought that part was funny. This gave Ann an opportunity to have one of her famous dramatic outbursts when she lectured Alex in the hallway.

Then Alex changed his mind and said he'd do the show with Schneider at the lodge. But when they rehearsed, Schneider thought Alex didn't have his heart in it so he told him to forget it and go with the girl instead. So Alex was happy, but more drama from Ann, this time directed at Schneider.

Second time seeing it so I knew what to expect!!! :D I wouldn't say it's as bad as TVFactfan thinks, but I agree with Retrofan ,Alex was just TOO old for that!! I know my sons at teenagers, even pre teens would NOT want to be Sonny Boy!! Nor would I want them in a girls wig sitting on a man's lap!!

See now I didn't think that is as weird, that's kind of funny, two grown women friends. Same as on Amen, two grown men. The disturbing part on ODAAT was the age difference between Schneider and Alex!!

And where did Schneider SUDDENLY get a piano? And it just SO happens Mark can play the piano!!!:D

Hey,opus!

I was watching this last night for the first time and thought Ann was a TOTAL witch to both Alex and Schneider.

What Alex said to Duhwayne (pronounced like the dental hygenist who Ann cajoled to cure Schneider's impotence;)) was in the heat of the moment and a typical kid's tantrum. He was completely out of line, I agree, but she overreacted and didn't even give him a chance to explain.

Then A My Name is Alex goes way out of his way to apologize to Schneider and go ahead and do the show and Schneider very graciously lets him off the hook to pursue the object of his affection. Basically Dwayne realized that he is a good kid with a good heart who had a bad moment and they worked it out for themselves.

Was this good enough for Ms. R? No, she berates the nosy maintenance man and tells him how wrong he is for basically being a good sport.

She was being as shrewish as she was in the mud slide episode which was one of my least favorite episodes.

BTW, Alex and Louie also did the Sonny Boy bit on Taxi MUCH better when the gang was babysitting Nardo's son.

For some reason, the "Sonny Boy" episode isn't listed when you go on to Tubi (https://tubitv.com/series/300010105/one-day-at-a-time/season-8). I wonder if it's a licensing issue.
