View Full Version : Shows That Got Canceled Despite Being Renewed
JamesG 05-14-2015, 11:12 PM What shows do you know of got the axe despite getting a (formal or informal) renewal announcement?
Arsenio Hall's revival talk show got a 2nd Season renewal in Feb. 2014 and then got the cancellation notice in May. Jay Leno actually announced the renewal on the show.
SitcomsOffline 05-17-2015, 11:24 AM CBS had verbally assured Sherwood Schwartz that Gilligan's Island would be picked up for a 4th season.
Some of the cast members had even bought homes in anticipation of the series being renewed.
But because of pressure from the President of CBS, his wife and the fans, Gilligan's Island became the sacrificial lamb at the last minute to save Gunsmoke from cancellation (at the last minute, while everyone was on vacation).
JamesG 05-17-2015, 11:36 AM MTV renewed the reality show "Buckwild" for a 2nd Season in Feb. 2013.
It was then canceled in April after the accidental death of star Shain Gandee.
factsoflife 05-17-2015, 08:53 PM Savannah on the WB network was all but renewed for a third season, but the WB decided to test a new show in its timeslot to see how it would do. If that show failed, then Savannah would be renewed. Unfortunately, that show was Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, which became the biggest hit the network ever had at the time. Savannah was cancelled.
JamesG 05-17-2015, 09:09 PM HBO canceled "Tell Me You Love Me" (2007) after renewing it for a 2nd Season. The decision was mutual betw. the network and creator Cynthia Mort.
She said, "Given the considerable amount of time that has passed and despite the best efforts of everyone involved, we were unable to find the direction of the show for the second season."
Torgo 05-18-2015, 02:39 PM ABC's Invasion. It was coming back for a second season, I remember they even had some kind of contest that tied in with the second season premiere.
JamesG 05-19-2015, 02:07 AM The Canadian police drama "The Badge" was renewed for the 2010-11 season, but it never happened.
It aired on CBS in the U.S. and was canceled after airing 3 eps.

I even specifically recall that it was Jay Leno, who during Hall's monologue, came out as a surprise guest and gave Arsenio the news that his show had indeed been picked up for a second season. The crowd went Craaaazy!
JamesG 05-23-2015, 11:15 PM El Rey Network had renewed "Matador" for a 2nd season before it launched in July 2014. It was then canceled in November because the executives weren't happy w/ its poor viewership overseas.
The network said, “Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.”
littletydramon 05-24-2015, 11:58 PM Best Of The West (1981) was renewed for a second season but was cancelled when the main actor went on to Silver Spoons.
JamesG 05-28-2015, 02:01 PM The HBO series "Luck" (2011-12) had just begun production on Season 2 when it got canned. It was canceled due to animal safety concerns for the horses used on-set after complaints were made from PETA and AHA.
Investigations were made after two horses were euthanized after on-set injuries and HBO decided to halt the production. The network said, "We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production. Accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future."
The footage from the scrapped 2nd season has never been released.
myowndrownedworld 06-02-2015, 08:36 AM Dark Angel was renewed for a third season. FOX had told the cast and crew, and It was even announced in a newspaper article. But when it came to upfronts, they changed their mind and cancelled it.

JamesG 08-28-2015, 07:35 PM VH1 has cancelled "Hindsight" — even though it renewed the time-traveling drama for Season 2 in March, EW.com reports.
“Scripted series have been a successful part of VH1’s primetime line-up since 2010 and will continue to be in the future,” the network said in a statement.
“We love Hindsight and couldn’t be more proud of the series. But in this overcrowded and rapidly changing climate, we need to carve out VH1’s distinct place in the scripted marketplace and deliver the biggest audiences possible for our series. As a result, we’re no longer moving forward with a second season of the show.”

I believe CBS granted Newhart another season (ratings were still strong), but Bob Newhart decided eight seasons was enough.
It did, however, lead to the short-lived Bob a year or two later.
One just happened. HINDSIGHT was renewed for a second season by VH-1 in March, but on Friday they cancelled it.
JamesG 10-27-2015, 08:21 PM HBO's "The Brink", starring Tim Robbins and Jack Black, was renewed for Season 2 back in July 2015.
HBO said in a statement, “After evaluating our schedule and our programming needs, we unfortunately decided we cannot give The Brink the attention it deserves for a second season. We are proud of the first season and wish everyone involved in this show the very best.”

Very very surprised at that reversal. There was a lot of buzz for Vinyl before it premiered and I thought it'd do quite well. It had my interest for sure. I waited for the first season to be done and for it to get it out on DVD. I picked it up the day it came out on DVD but haven't watched it yet. This'll be depressing knowing it's only going to last 10 episodes.
I know this is a forum for sitcoms James and I do apologize for even discussion an HBO show since the vast majority of their stuff is dramas that'll never be aired on regular network tv-mostly anyway. They've done some...intriguing stuff to say the very least. HBO will be hurting bad when Game Of Thrones ends in 2018. I just hope their upcoming development slate is interesting.
Given this was done by some of the Boardwalk Empire people, which is a fantastic show btw, I figured Vinyl would get two seasons at the very least. I'm kind of hoping they're trying to shop it around but I don't know who would air it and how much would have to be chopped if it ended up on regular tv. Probably damn near all of it wouldn't fly on a regular network so it's probably really dead now.
I still look forward to watching the show but this news will dampen it. This news definitely surprised me to say the least.
JamesG 09-07-2017, 05:49 PM Amazon has canceled Christina Ricci's "Z: The Beginning of Everything" after renewing it for Season 2.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to cancel the period drama comes as the streaming service is looking to reduce spending on original programming. A reported $7 million has been already spent on pre-production.

JamesG 11-20-2017, 05:25 PM BET has scrapped plans for a 2nd Season of hip-hop drama "The Breaks".
"The Breaks" finished its lone season in February on VH1 and BET announced in April that they were picking it up for Season 2; which is now no longer happening.

bh7812 11-20-2017, 07:14 PM I believe CBS granted Newhart another season (ratings were still strong), but Bob Newhart decided eight seasons was enough.
It did, however, lead to the short-lived Bob a year or two later.
Yes they did! It did get the official renewal sometime that season but Bob decided to end that series. He made the right call, I think had it gone another year it would have become more "The Michael, Stephanie, Larry, Darryl and Darryl Show" and focused far less on Dick, Joanna and George. Creatively they took it absolutely as far as it would go. The supporting cast of characters were unreal, it was Twilight Zone Vermont basically by the end. It was genius! We also wouldn't have gotten what I consider the definitive best Series Finale ever! Anyone reading this that hasn't seen it yet-do it today, you'll be glad you did. We won't see a finale that creative or imaginative ever again.
The first season of Bob was legitimately great! Interesting premise, fantastic supporting cast of quite the characters, and most of that first season is some of Bob's best work right up there with his best Bob Newhart Show and Newhart work. I wholeheartedly recommend fans of his to check out at least that first season...it even ends on a cliffhanger! The second year of Bob changed almost everything, way way too fast and too much time had passed between Seasons 1 and 2. Terrible. The show had a LOT of potential and they could have gone at least 3 plus seasons if CBS hadnt mucked it up. Check out the Season 1 episode with the wannabe knockoff Barney the dinosaur!! It's of Bob's best moments, if you want a laugh out loud pee in your pants episode that's the one to watch!
KentB3 12-03-2017, 10:28 AM CBS had verbally assured Sherwood Schwartz that Gilligan's Island would be picked up for a 4th season.

But because of pressure from the President of CBS, his wife and the fans, Gilligan's Island became the sacrificial lamb at the last minute to save Gunsmoke from cancellation (at the last minute, while everyone was on vacation).
Gunsmoke was almost cancelled again in 1971, while Mayberry R.F.D. and Family affair were going to be renewed for the 1971-72 season. This was reversed for the same reason, and also due to the fact that Gunsmoke was the 5th higest-rated show in Prime-Time network television.
factsoflife 12-04-2017, 09:44 PM Long-running talk show "Sally" (formerly "The Sally Jessy Raphael Show" or "Sally Jessy") was cancelled in 2002 after 19 seasons, but prior to this cancellation Sally had been promised by the studio executives that her show would be renewed for a 20th season. She even told staff members on her show that their jobs were safe and to go ahead and buy houses and cars and so on. In numerous interviews since then she has described feeling betrayed by the studio for not being honest with her.
JamesG 05-29-2018, 02:55 PM After it did great in its premiere, ABC renewed the "Roseanne" revival for a 2nd season.
ABC canceled it after Roseanne Barr made a racist tweet against former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.
JamesG 06-09-2018, 01:10 PM Nine months after renewing the alien abduction comedy "People of Earth" for Season 3, TBS has canceled it, according to creator David Jenkins.
“Just got word last night: TBS has cancelled People of Earth,” he tweeted. “Thank you to everyone who was a fan of the show and enjoyed its gentle, amiable sci-fi weirdness. It was an honor sharing this show with you. Let’s do it again soon. Love you all.”

JamesG 12-19-2018, 06:08 PM OWN is reversing course on "Love Is___", cancelling the relationship drama five months after announcing its renewal. The decision comes as EP Salim Akil faces a lawsuit from a woman claiming he abused her during an alleged 10-year affair.
“OWN has decided not to move forward with the second season of Love Is___ ,” the network said in a statement.

merlinjones 03-05-2020, 11:01 AM Batman cancelled by ABC after season 3 but NBC ready to pick it up for season 4 - except that the sets were already destroyed and they didn't want to spend for rebuild.
Schmo 03-05-2020, 12:16 PM Were these shows canceled only after a verbal promise they would be renewed, and not a written agreement, which could lead to a breach of contract lawsuit?
Duster76 03-08-2020, 10:25 PM Batman cancelled by ABC after season 3 but NBC ready to pick it up for season 4 - except that the sets were already destroyed and they didn't want to spend for rebuild.
I've read that NBC was interested in Batman in a few places but I'm not sure I buy it. Batman even with the season 3 budget cuts was still an expensive show to produce, the series had been in serious ratings decline since the start of its second season, as a matter of fact ABC almost axed it after season 2, why in heaven's name would NBC want to take a chance. Maybe it's true but I had the impression Adam West started this story circulating around and I think he had a rather vivid imagination (didn't he claim on many occasions that he turned down an offer to be James Bond).
Jamey Greek 03-08-2020, 10:56 PM After it did great in its premiere, ABC renewed the "Roseanne" revival for a 2nd season.
ABC canceled it after Roseanne Barr made a racist tweet against former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.
It was stupid that they did that yet Jimmy Kimmel.trashes Trump but he doesn't get can elked. The women in the view do.not get canned. Hell, In 2006, Conan O'Brien did a Lost parody which was inappropriate after a plan e crash in Kentucky and he does not get fired and still gets The Tonight Show and we all know how that turned out!
JamesG 06-10-2020, 10:43 PM A&E had renewed "Live P.D." for an additional 160 episodes back in May 2020.

JamesG 08-19-2020, 09:42 PM Comedy Central has changed its programming direction and the decision was made to abandon the 16-episode seventh season of "Drunk History" that was originally announced a year ago.

JamesG 08-20-2020, 09:36 PM Another Comedy Central staple is saying goodbye a little sooner than expected: The pop culture clip show "Tosh.0" will end with Season 12, reversing the network’s previous decision to renew the show.
Back in January, Comedy Central picked up "Tosh.0" for four more seasons, ensuring it would stay on the air through at least Season 16. But this new development will bring the show to an end this fall, though ViacomCBS reportedly plans to shop it to other outlets.

ABC cancels Stumptown, reversing Season 2 renewal, due to the coronavirus pandemic
The breakout series starring Cobie Smulders, which was renewed for a second season in May, will not be going forward with the Season 2 order.
Stumptown was part of the fall 2020 ABC schedule announced in June, slated to return to the Wednesday 10 PM slot it occupied last season. According to sources, a timing issue related to the production start delay made it impossible for the show to be ready for a fall launch when the network had scheduling needs for the 2020-21 season. As a result, the network made a decision to not move forward with the previously commissioned new season.

JamesG 01-29-2021, 06:20 PM CBC has reversed its Season 2 renewal decision for indigenous supernatural drama series "Trickster" after co-creator/director Michelle Latimer became embroiled in a controversy over her claimed indigenous ancestry.
In the U.S., The CW acquired the series, which debuted on the network on Jan. 12. Three episodes into its six-episode run, the drama has delivered decent numbers for a lower-cost acquisition.
The network will air the rest of the Season 1 episodes.

JamesG 06-24-2021, 05:46 PM Kenya Barris’ semi-autobiographical Netflix comedy "#blackAF" has had its 2nd Season un-renewed.

Gunsmoke was almost cancelled again in 1971, while Mayberry R.F.D. and Family affair were going to be renewed for the 1971-72 season. This was reversed for the same reason, and also due to the fact that Gunsmoke was the 5th highest-rated show in Prime-Time network television.
This makes me hate "Gunsmoke" even more!! First Gilligan, then "Family Affair"! How awful!!
Of course, CBS wasn't brave enough to put it up against "Bonanza" for a real Wild West shootout. They would have been slaughtered! The one show that did beat them in the ratings, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" was, naturally, cancelled!

The one show that did beat them in the ratings, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" was, naturally, cancelled!Family Affair was cancelled when the access law took effect, which removed network programming most nights at 7:30. Odds are the access law played a part in more cancellations than usual that season. I don't buy Kent's claim that Gunsmoke was almost cancelled instead of Family Affair/Mayberry RFD considering Gunsmoke was a highly rated top 5 show then.
Duster76 01-22-2022, 04:06 PM Family Affair was on Thursday night at 7:30 during the 70-71 TV season and got steamrolled by Flip Wilson, icecream is correct the access law killed any chance of renewal.
Icecream is also correct with respect to his comments on Gunsmoke, why would CBS cancel a show that finished in the top 5 for two shows that were in decline, doesn't make any sense.
Let's take a closer look at Mayberry RFD. First, the 800-pound Gorilla in the room is of course the rural purge, Mayberry stuck out like a sore thumb. I think an additional factor that led to its demise was the production company's ultra conservative approach to the show. The series was really just an extension of the final 3 years of The Andy Griffith Show and nothing more. There was no effort made to make it into a series of its own. There was a timeslot available for the series, Friday night at 8pm where The Chicago Teddy Bears was scheduled. This series was the morning line pick to be cancelled by midseason (which in fact it was). Mayberry RFD needed to become its own show that didn't happen so its chance of survival was zero.

I hope you're being facetious, any programmer who even suggested putting the two surviving westerns up against each other would be laughed out of the room. It's all about counterprogramming.
Doegg 02-02-2022, 11:45 AM I know it's an old thread, but I think someone here might answer a question about Arsenio Hall's revival talk show. I'm interested if anyone knows where I can find the online seasons of this show. Or maybe someone has downloaded them from that period. I really enjoyed watching it and had a great time doing it. Found on tvcancelrenew.com (https://tvcancelrenew.com/) that it was renewed a few years ago, but I still can't find at least one episode. I hope to find a helpful answer here.

That's interesting that someone out there hates Gunsmoke. It was on during a very interesting time in American history, 1955-1975. Americcan shows went from I Love Lucy to Maude.
Gilloigan's Island was awful unless you were a little kid.
JamesG 11-01-2022, 03:03 AM The first adult-animated series, launching one month before Comedy Central's "South Park", was HBO's "Spicy City".

icecream 11-01-2022, 03:25 PM Will Cruel Summer and The Cube end up on this list? Cruel Summer was going to get a whole new cast and premise, but nothing has been revealed about a season premiere over a year after the original season ended. I hope season 2 of The Cube still comes, but with how TBS' new management has gone on a canceling binge wouldn't be surprised if it was scrapped as well. I had sent Dwayne Wade a message on Facebook asking about The Cube but never heard back from him, he might not have even seen my message with the high volume he must get.
