Ed was just too old and stiff for me and I really hated all the scenes he was in during the show. He came off as a "ANCHOR" for CBS NEWS since he was always wearing a suit and had that deep voice. lol

Bob's dad was funny and came off more like a dad instead of some old stiff who reports the news lol

Ed looked like "Dan Rather's Uncle"

Me too!!! :) and Joe Campanella was a good actor , he guest starred on lots of shows. I think he did more drama than comedy.

William Schallert was a good actor too, had more comedy roles I think.

That is a two parter I guess? Probably about Ed having a drinking problem. Maybe that is where a lot of his money is going to!

I never knew William Schallert was on ODAAT, but I'm not surprised because he's been in about everything. And my gosh, I thought he died a few years ago. But I just looked him up and he's still alive, 92 years old now AND STILL ACTING ON TELEVISION! He appeared on Two Broke Girls last year. He's up there with Betty White for longevity, with his television career going back to the '50s. Speaking of which, Bonniegirl, don't forget this Sunday night on CBS! "The TIME has come." I'll be setting my DVR for sure.

He also played Nancy Drew's dad in the 70's series. Also had a recurring role on the later seasons of The Walton's as Rose's love interest.

I think it was because he mostly played in dramas.

William Schallert has been on sooooo many shows over the years. And all genres. He was even in Star Trek.

100% Agreed! One of or the best and nicest "Character Actor" careers in television history (along with Charles Lane) with the difference William had many regular series roles and Charles Lane guested on practically every sitcom, so don't anyone ask who he is?...LOL....

With a smile to all 90% of these posts can be answered by a fast google search you know! Less Clutter and OCD post/thread number counters. My opinion and I'm sticking to it! Again LOL and smile to all, but the only thing I count are loved ones, friends and salary!

BTW...Yes Mr. Lane was even in "It's A Wonderful Life" and worked with Lucy starting with "I Love to Here's", plus spotted in Hooterville, Mayberry and over 1000 other TV & Movie spots. He was celebrated at the Emmy's a few years back for his 100th birthday. He is now passed.

Back to On Topic: Another series role that hasn't been mentioned for William was he played "The New Gidget's" father on the 80's first run syndicated yet now sadly forgotten reboot starring the still beautiful and sweet Caryn Richman.

Written without help from Google, just my life!
