View Full Version : Ann dating a married man was way out of character!
Anna Karenina 05-11-2015, 01:14 PM Ann Romano would NEVER have consorted with a man she knew was married and had a family.
As soon as she found out some shmuck slept with her under false pretenses she would have kicked him to the curb. Instead she embarks on an affair with this liar/cheater and then when he leaves his wife and family for her, decides he doesn't want her after all because he needs to find himself.
Instead of tearing his head off in her usual ball busting Ann Romano fashion, she just pats him on the head, cries with him and tells him she understands.
What the what?
I hated this arc, couldn't stand the man she cheated with and couldn't believe what a doormat/hoochie she was in this episode. Yes, she felt enormous guilt as she should have. But it was way out of character for her to knowingly sleep with a married man in the first place, given what a strong, confident, liberated/no BS woman she portrayed herself to be. This guy was such a loser, yet for some reason he was portrayed as one of the great loves of her life. She criticized Ed, David and Nick for every little slight, yet she lets this leech lie to her, use her as a way to get out of his marriage and then is overly sympathetic to him when he dumps her.
Just awful.:(
Thoughts???
Wawwie 05-11-2015, 01:26 PM Ann really came off as such a LOSER in this episode. She's always going on about how she's liberated and independent and then she allows herself to become a total doormat and she allows herself to be used. She showed no self respect in this episode. Barbara was the only one who snubbed Ann for behaving like such a ho. Barbara gave her the silent treatment.
Ann was so pathetic. The whole episode was pitiful. It was only when the man DUMPED Ann that Ann looks at herself in the mirror and says "welcome back." Gimme an 'effing break. If that guy didn't dump Ann, Ann would continue to be his little sex toy on the side.
This episode showed women how to be WEAK.
Anna Karenina 05-11-2015, 01:40 PM Thank you! I am glad I am not the only one who hated this ridiculous arc.
That look she gave herself in the mirror was at least an acknowledgment to the audience that she would be back to her old self the next week but still the whole story line made no sense with the character she had previously portrayed.
Barbara had the right reaction and reacted similarly when Julie cheated on Max. I actually found that infidelity IN character because Julie was such a mess in general. However Ann's behavior made no logical sense.
Wawwie 05-11-2015, 01:48 PM ^^^ I agree. The storyline made no sense whatsoever as Ann was behaving totally out of character. I'm glad that Barbara showed her disapproval with the cold shoulder for Ann. At least someone had the nerve to let Ann know what she was doing wasn't okay. Ann was definitely setting a poor example for her girls.
Anna Karenina 05-11-2015, 02:07 PM Absolutely. Ann would never have made that choice when she was trying to be a feminist role model for her teens. It didn't make any sense.
Oh, and the worst part was when Carl or whatever his name was, goes home and immediately gets his wife to grant him a divorce and his kids are instantly supportive of their family breaking up. How convenient!
Stupid writers!:(
mets82 05-11-2015, 05:52 PM I see your points. I really do. BUT, sometimes when you find out your with a married man or woman, its tough to leave. I have NO experience on the subject but it must be tough because there's a lot of love there. You just can't shut it off. If I'm Ann, I would have broken it off. There's no good that could come out of it and your asking for a hell of a lot of trouble.
cleverfun3000 05-11-2015, 06:15 PM What a lot of people fail to understand is that women have sexual needs also. And just like any man, are prone to make mistakes and bad judgment when they seek to fulfill these needs with people that just aren't available to them. So realistically I don't fault Ann as much as I fault the married man who took the vows to be faithful to his wife. Ann definitely gets a pass on this one.

I say both are at fault! As the saying goes, it takes two to Tango! :D
mets82 05-12-2015, 05:44 PM Very true Bonnie. But Ann must figure a married man is better than some of the losers she's gone out with.
Anna Karenina 05-13-2015, 12:49 PM Putting the adultery issue aside for a moment.
The Ann Romano I know would NEVER put up with a guy like this. She threw away a perfectly good husband and provider because she wanted to be independent. She and he would argue constantly over the littlest of things. She was a pitbull.
Same with David, Nick, Sam and any number of men she went out with. She went to battle with both Connors and Davenport, Francine, her own mother and basically any person, male or female she had a conflict with. She once slapped the sugar out of Julie because she made a sassy comment.
Are we to believe that she would instantly forgive a man who pursued and seduced her without informing her of his marital status? Then proceed to sleep with him on the DL until he used her to get out of his marriage. And then when he dumps her after all of that, cry with him and act like it was a huge learning experience for both of them?
No way, the Ann Romano the audience knew would have read him the riot act the very MINUTE she found out he was married. She would NEVER have given him the time of day after that. She would NEVER have let her girls see her as needy and pathetic as that.
Thanks for reading, I have enjoyed reading all of your responses.
Wawwie 05-13-2015, 01:02 PM Ann showed her true weakness and neediness in this episode. Her ex husband Ed was too good to her, so she threw him aside to be "independent" yet when that married guy treats HER like crap, she accepts it. She welcomes the mental abuse. What a hypocrite. Lucky for Ed that Ann divorced him. He was better off without her.
When guys are good to Ann, she treats them like poop. When guys lie, cheat and deceive, she embraces them with love. How sad and pitiful.
Anna Karenina 05-13-2015, 01:20 PM Let the church say AMEN!
I always thought Ed was way too good for her. I don't understand why she would uproot her children when they were still in high school so she could break up an intact family in order to "find herself". As far as we knew Ed was a good provider, father and never cheated. So of course she dumps him.
She meets this loser who deceives her into thinking he is single and puts up with all sorts of humiliation because of him and barely registers a complaint.
What was it about this guy that turned her into a sniveling idiot? Didn't make any sense. Maybe he was great in the sack? https://www.google.com/search?q=david+spielberg+one+day+at+a+time&espv=2&biw=911&bih=415&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=4odTVfC3BMOwggTC5oHIBQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAw&dpr=1.5#imgrc=FTpBBWqvbVxSzM%253A%3BwLyTbuNBzx5-jM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.nndb.com%252Fpeople%252F549%252F000348502%252Fdavid-spielberg-1-sized.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.nndb.com%252Fpeople%252F549%252F000348502%252F%3B245%3B331

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Ann was not a perfect woman. Even the strong ones may have some weak points and fall short from time to time. I think that is was the writers show. Plus, it draws reaction from viewers like us. Yes, we hate the Ann did what she did but it got us talking about it.
I loved the character of Ann Romano with her flaws and all. Its like the writers are telling a story arc with this woman, her trials, ups and downs. I am very intrigued as I watch each season over again. There is something different and unique about each season. I know some have an issue with Ann remarrying but I think that enough time passed where Ann was able to find her self and accomplish self goals/achievements.
I think that although she did remarry the writers linked her with a man who was good for her. Sam Royer was laid back and very supportive of Ann achieving what she desired and did not hold her back like Ed did. Heck, she got a job offer to go England and Sam was all for it and had her back. So yes, in the story telling arc, Ann (over a course of time and pursuing) did get a happy ending and she deserved it.
Anna Karenina 05-13-2015, 09:06 PM I will say as much as I HATED Ann's spineless, immoral behavior in this episode I really appreciated the fact that she did not in any way justify her behavior but in fact beat herself up about it constantly and said that they were hurting people.
Her lover on the other hand (whatever his name was) was very narcissistic and self serving and seemed not to care about either his wife or Ann or his children. Why Ann thought he was worth all the trouble is hard to imagine.
I will say Bonnie Franklin's acting was excellent in this arc, the character's guilt washed all over her face. I am the first one to knock her when she chews the scenery but she held back from her excesses and underplayed her scenes very effectively.
Bonniegirl 09-11-2015, 12:32 AM WOW!!! I think this is the thread from the ep I just saw? Was it a three part ep about Ann dating a married man? This is strange, because IDK why I don't really remember these eps much?
Part one was on tonight and I was BORED to tears!!!! I found the guy to be completely boring and nothing to get excited about! And than finding out he was married! These eps weren't too memorable to me than, and well I'll watch the next two again. But the guy seemed like an A hole and wasn't that great looking!!! I don't see why Ann would be this head over heals for him and than finding out he was married. Kick his A** to the curb, with his goofy comb over or bad toupee!!! LOL!!!
If indeed this is the right thread that I am posting on???

Yea I don't like the guy either. Her kiss scene with him was disgusting. YUCK! And then she went to bed with him too, because he ended up spending the night there in her apartment. DOUBLE YUCK!!
To me, the only guy Bonnie Franklin matched well with in this show was Richard Masur. It was unfortunate when he left the show. All the other guys
were mismatches. The guy who played her ex-husband, Joseph Campanella, was a mismatch, looked too old for her. And then later they brought in Howard Hesseman, another mismatch who also looked too old for her, and she ended up marrying him. Maybe she had an obsession for older looking men.

Yes, this is the first time i have seen this arc also. Did it even run the first go around? Because i'm sure i would have caught at least one of the 3 episodes.
I never liked how the show portrayed Ann's love life. LOTS of guys would come and go and she would fall for guys way too fast.
I think David was her best bet.

Yes! Her love life was like a revolving door! :D
I maybe had a change of heart from my last post (or a softening of the heart) ?? I watched these two eps tonight with my husband. We also were drinking some beers because it's Friday! We both think it was the guy that seemed more at fault than Ann! He led her on, not telling her he was married ! THAN, he divorced his wife, than he was like I'm not sure I want to settle down with you, Ann! WTF? what did this guy want? My hubby pointed out that our marriage was a second marriage for both of us,and we have to remember that Ann and this guy were from an older generation ,and marriage and divorce were different back than! ;)
Anyway, like I said before he wasn't all that hot ,and Ann could do better anyway! ;)

I think Ann had the best chemistry with the Maestro (David Duke) and that was for sure a one night stand! The guys that were supposed to be her boyfriends didn't really seem right for her!
I actually loved Ed! I love Joseph Campenella,I think he is really handsome, ;) but yeah too old for Ann and not really each others type?! I think the guy who she had the affair with in this recent 3 parter seems like HE should have been Ed !;) He seemed like he would be a good X husband type for Ann, and a believable Dad for Julie and Barbara? Well IDK maybe for Barbara but old Ed Joe Campenella did look like he could be Julie's Dad so IDK?!!

You're right, it ran on the now infamous Mother's Day marathon, and therefore got skipped in the daily airings. In fact, for posterity's sake, here's the eps that ran on Mom's day-
http://www.tribunemedia.com/antenna-tv-to-air-one-day-at-a-time-mothers-day-marathon/
Some of them did repeat in the first cycle though.
We also were drinking some beers because it's Friday!
Is the show better when drunk? TGIF!

YES!!! Actually it is!!!
1960'sTVfan 09-12-2015, 03:04 PM What a lot of people fail to understand is that women have sexual needs also.
I agree with you on that. When a divorced woman says she's doing fine and doesn't need a man, she's talking BS, she's lying. What she really means is- she's horny and wants some action.
I know a woman who's divorced, she told me that she's happy being independent and single, and doesn't need a man. However, every chance she gets, she goes on dates, usually with the same man, occasionally it's a different guy. I said to her- "If you don't need a man, why do you go on dates for?" She replied- "Because I want male companionship." So I replied- "Then stop the BS, stop lying, and stop saying you don't need a man." LOL people are crazy.

Ann sure was testing some new waters in the male department after her divorce! ;) I don't think Ed totally "satisfied" her ! Remember he called her frigid , and she retorted back to him calling him "Speedy Gonzalez"!! As to say he was all finished before she even had a chance to get into it!::rolleyes: So she was all set to "sample some new sausage"! (Hope that wasn't too crude)! :D With all her new "boyfriends" it seemed our little Miss Ann was quite the "Hot tamale"!

Yea, Ann was out to find some action, that's for sure. Ann was cute looking during seasons 1-3, but in season 4 her hairstyle changed and she wasn't so cute anymore. Just plain looking. Then Barbara matured and she became the hot one.
Then Barbara matured and she became the hot one.
Odd. I never noticed that...:)

I wouldn't have ever known it was him if the episodes had not been run so close together.
I remembered him as a bearded creep trying to hit on Malorie in that ep. Funny how things get fuzzy over the years.
The fun of watching old sitcoms is to see who became really famous and how many people guest started on multiple shows.

PracTz 02-07-2016, 02:49 PM If I recall correctly, the late Miss Franklin herself objected to this episode on the grounds that being a voluntary participant in an adulterous relationship was something SHE would never do but the producers came back with the argument that she was playing Ann and not herself here and that Ann WOULD do so. Hence, not able to counter that argument, she evidently agreed to do this storyline.
Anna Karenina 02-10-2016, 06:34 PM Interesting.
Knowing Bonnie Franklin objected to this story line but did it anyway kind of enhanced her performance in a way. You could see the character viscerally disgusted with her behavior but caught up in extreme loneliness and weakness.
Although she was way out of character, Bonnie did some fine understated acting here. So as much as I loathed this nauseating arc, she really did make lemonade out of lemons here.
Meanwhile in Miami, Dorothy Zbornak, a victim of her husband Stan's many infidelities had basically the same story line, but didn't seem to be at all guilt ridden about the man's wife even though she was in that same position many, many, many times!;)
At least Ann had some empathy for the wife here.
Anna Karenina 05-26-2016, 10:01 AM Family members its the adultery hour (and a half) again!
Lurkers who never post here, please chime in. I know you have your take on the situation.
Did anybody sympathize with Ann's boyfriend? To me he seemed like a wolf in sheep's clothing but others may disagree.
Was Barbara's reaction understandable or judgmental?
What would Julie have said if she was still with The Logs?
Would the arc have been better if we got to see the wife's side of things? I have a feeling she would have a different perspective than the erring husband. We just got his side, she needed to show up at some point and perhaps bond with Ann over that rat head and what he did to them.
Thoughts???
Discuss.
Bonniegirl 05-26-2016, 01:10 PM I feel the same as I did last time I posted! The guy was nothing special. And being a married man too! Wasn't one of Ann's finer moments!
And they reused the name. He was Mark, than down the line Barbara's husband was Mark. You'd think when Barbara first started dating Mark, and he met Ann. She would play "name association", and think "Oh no, another Mark"!
That's funny, TV shows don't usually do that, they usually come up with new names for every character!
1960'sTVfan 05-26-2016, 01:28 PM I don't like this three parter, and also don't like the sportswriter guy, so I skip these episodes whenever they air. The only guys that I think match well with Ann are David and the race driver guy. The rest are scum.

I missed it yesterday, and I'm most likely not gonna watch today! I have lots of stuff I need to do out of the home! I could have went earlier but I'm looking forward to watching old classic black and white To tell the truth on BUZZR at 11:00 and than I gotta go out so I'm most likely gotta give up ODAAT today!
I could go out after ODAAT but I need to do some cleaning and cooking here today, so I don't want to be out really late in the afternoon! :)
But it's OK, this 3 parter isn't that much on my "Must see list "! ;)
Anna Karenina 05-26-2016, 04:15 PM I am watching right now.
Poor stupid Ann.
This guy has all his slick lines ready.

Anna Karenina 05-26-2016, 04:34 PM Uncle Arthur/Mark is so transparently selfish and smarmy.
What is the attraction for a usually savvy woman like Ann?
Loneliness makes people do strange things sometimes.
Anna Karenina 05-26-2016, 04:45 PM Howard Sprague makes his first appearance on the show as the guy who thinks Ann is Mark's wife Ellen.

"Some terrific guy, cheats on his wife and lies to his mistress!"
Ann goes through all of this just to have Mark dump her like one of Bunny's expired doggy bags.:(
Ann the doormat consoles him.:( She will always be grateful to him. Yuck!
I am going to throw up.
:(
Good Riddance, Uncle Arthur.
Welcome Back, Ann!

Everyone seems written in character, except of course for the ongoing Ann debate.

Hey Anna,
Ed and Ann just seem like a mismatch to me. I think he looks too old for her, almost like he could be her father. I can't say that I dislike Ed, but he and Ann together just doesn't look right.
I don't care for Sam, to me he's more like the scummy slimy type. When they married Ann off with him, I'm glad the series ended after the 9th season. I don't think I could have tolerated a 10th season and more Ann/Sam episodes.

I agree with you about Ed. They just didn't look right age wise. I liked Ed and felt bad that he had his girls taken away from him like that. I guess he and his child bride fought a lot and that is not good for the children either.
Sam was written all over the map for me. I liked Howard Hesseman but Sam seemed kind of like a poor father to Mark growing up *see my thread*.
He did seem to really love Ann though and treated everybody to a Christmas Cruise so he couldn't have been that bad.:D
I am not sure what you mean.
I thought one of your questions was about the other characters reactions to the situation, and I thought they were written as the audience would expect. Barbara against, Schneider caring, but brutally honest, Julie ,most likely to agree going for it. So my only debate is whether Ann would have done it in the first place, as you titled the topic.
