Why?

They surely could've had their wives come in a clean up once in a while.

Or wouldn't the precinct have had at least one janitor?

It added to the old rundown building affect I guess. In that era (the 70's) on TV and movies a lot of times they portrayed NY as being dirty and gritty!

Being police officers I think they had more important things to do than tidying up!

In Barney Miller: Season 2,Episode 9,a rat scampers around the precinct and bites Wojehowicz. This might be best episode to show the building be rundown.

Kojak's office and squad room looked a lot like Barney Miller. Green walls, files and papers everywhere, people smoking.

And remember that Nick was sad that they were spraying for cockroaches, as they were the closest things he had to a pet.

If the precinct was all neat and clean, it wouldn't look real. I see some of those types of shows they make today and everything is too perfect, looks fake.

This was my first thought. New York was always portrayed as gritty in the 70-80s in lot of shows. Even Night Court. (which had many of the same guest stars)

Barney Miller's 12th Precinct was supposed to be the bottom of the barrel.

EXACTLY!!!! ;)

I never really was into Barney Miller till recently!!! I remember my Mom and Dad loving it first run, and I thought it was a show for "old people"! LOL My parents were probably younger than I am now!!!

So I started watching on Antenna not too long ago, and really like this show!!!!;) I think the dirty, gritty bottom of the barrel precinct adds to the charm of the show!!!! It wouldn't be the same or as funny if it was a modern, clean office/precinct! ;)

So Antenna took it off in the afternoon, and put it on 9PM PST!!!! That is when they show the stupid local news broadcast ,so no more Barney Miller for me on Antenna!!!!

I got into it when they would show it on Sunday nights. I remember a couple of episodes from my childhood, my mother loved the show.

I'm reminded of Taxi with the mentions of insects, and they also had other vermin (Louie catching a mouse).

There's truth in real life everywhere, not just NYC, about guys not being good with "housework." I once had to mop the hallway in the local college's Physics department -- all male -- and my mop water became as dark as black coffee!!

The theme music is the only nice thing I can say about this show lol

There was a "cleaning lady". She was in one episode.

But New York WAS gritty in the 70's-80's. Times Square was NOT the family-friendly place it is today. It was full of peep shows and porno theaters. One of my first trips to NYC was with my dad and a friend who went to buy a used professional camera in the Hasidic district. They weren't open on Saturdays, so we ran up on a Sunday. The first thing I noticed when we stepped out of the car was the smell of urine. Turned out the homeless sleeping in the alley also used it for a toilet. That would have been around 1982-ish.

That’s how NYC was in the 70s. The city was literally bankrupt. There was no money. That’s why Barney was always talking about manpower shortages and the precinct was a wreck.

This was NY in the late 70s and early 80s. Absolutely filthy. The precinct fit in with the times.

A lot of shows from the 70s had a grimy look. I always thought all the Norman Lear shows looked dirty except for The Jeffersons, but they were rich.

I've been in a police precinct. It's not beautiful.

Ignoring the sexism, Fish and Barney were the only married men.

I worked in a small office before and one of my co workers Girlfriend used to clean our office! She was a housekeeper by trade anyway, and our boss paid her of course ! ;)

The men's room was gross. I believe there was just one scene in there with Harris and Millicent aka Mitzy.
