MichaelKeith 04-16-2015, 12:28 PM Just a testament to how popular Lucille Ball is that CBS would spend that time and money to replay two 1950s tv shows on a Sunday primetime not during any special holiday.
It may be the May sweeps but still, this show just how much people still love Lucy.
Zoneboy 04-16-2015, 12:45 PM Looks like 2 threads were being posted at the same time.

Smilings 04-16-2015, 02:37 PM I wonder if LA at Last is new colorization or the old one shown only at Lucy convention.
mets82 04-16-2015, 04:23 PM And who says there isnt a need for classic programming??
MichaelKeith 04-16-2015, 04:27 PM Smilings, my bet is that the colorization of both these episodes is new. CBS has been colorizing certain episodes over the last couple of years and they definitely look better than the older colorizations. I've seen the Christmas episode in the old and new versions and the new color looks so much more realistic.
LittleRickyII 04-16-2015, 06:18 PM I wonder if LA at Last is new colorization or the old one shown only at Lucy convention.
The one shown at the convention was lost several years ago. Unless they found it, this would be new.
Ron Ron 04-16-2015, 06:54 PM I am assuming these two episodes will be available soon on DVD after they are shown on CBS.
BigManMike 04-16-2015, 09:32 PM This will be good. I will certainly watch.
tlc38tlc38 04-17-2015, 09:45 AM I'm a purist who enjoys a bit of fun...meaning that I LOVE the B&W episodes but I LIKE the colorized ones. I hope they continue to do this...anything to draw more attention to the classics.
I'm hoping for a new DVD or Blu release of ALL the colorized episodes. I'm also hoping for season 2 of the B&W episodes in Blu!
I love Lucy and always will!
I am assuming these two episodes will be available soon on DVD after they are shown on CBS.
Hopefully they'll release these two episodes and "Job Switching" on DVD together. I just hope if they do release these two it isn't another "Target Exclusive" tied to something else. I had to beg and plead to locate a copy of that release in December to get "Job Switching"
Smilings 04-17-2015, 11:39 PM A friend of mine said he hopes they colorize the classic Honeymooners.
I agree.
MichaelKeith 05-15-2015, 04:05 PM Don't forget Lucy is on this Sunday the 17th on CBS primetime!!!

I'm not going to forget. I'm having a very small intimate gathering at my home to celebrate! I'm making heart-shaped sugar cookies with pink frosting and pink lemonade. Can't wait it's going to be fun.

That one is fine, but the William Holden episode is an all-time classic. THAT'S the one I'm looking forward to. Most people seem to think the Superman episode is an odd pick. It's not considered a classic episode.

That's fantastic! I would love a gathering like that with other fans. You're going to have a great time, I'm sure. Clever idea with the cookies and lemonade. :)
Ron Ron 05-16-2015, 04:06 PM Im bumping this so I won't forget tomorrow…LOL
LittleRickyII 05-18-2015, 12:23 AM Tonight was the best colorization yet of this show. It was just fantastic! I've always thought that the "L.A. at Last!" episode is the funniest half hour in television history -- continuous laughs start to finish -- but I was laughing constantly and heartily tonight, as if I had never seen this episode before. The color made it feel like something brand new. I absolutely loved it! In the previous episodes they had colorized, the colors seemed very muted and off. But tThey seem to have done something different this time that made the colors more vivid and realistic, and it is worlds better! I absolutely loved it! I'm hoping they continue with the colorization and in the same manner as tonight's episodes.

My thoughts exactly.
Watching the episodes were like seeing something new and fresh. It's awesome that a show from the '50s still holds up so well that it can air in prime time and still get awesome ratings. The class and comedy of Lucy lives on for the new generations. I adore the B&W episodes because I'm a TV purist but I still hope for more episodes to be colorized because they're so much fun.
Watching Lucy in color is like watching the Super Bowl to me...it's a true event.
I hope they re-air the color Christmas special again this year with a new color episode. I really want them to do "The Freezer"!
MichaelKeith 05-18-2015, 09:04 AM This a series that begs to be shown in color. They need to colorize the whole thing!!!!!!!

Yes, indeed, the Lucy Bowl. I hope they continue to air colorized episodes for the holidays, but I don't think they should include the Christmas episode itself as it's (IMO) one of the weakest episodes of the entire series.
This a series that begs to be shown in color. They need to colorize the whole thing!!!!!!!
I agree! I was sort of a B&W purist, but I'm coming around, especially after last night. And for new generations to discover this show, they really need to do this.
mets82 05-18-2015, 04:47 PM I kind of liked Lucy in B&W but thats just me. I watched the Superman episode because I was watching The Simpsons during LA at Last. I did catch the end of LA at Last with Lucy, Ricky and Bill Holden. That was one of the funniest scenes on the show. How about when her "nose" caught on fire? And Ricky's face? Priceless.
I like the Superman episode. "You've been married to her for 15 yrs.?" "And they call me Superman." I will say that I dont have any idea as to why Lucy would be Superman. I mean do you think any kid would think that Lucy was the real Superman? Btw, did they edit any of the episodes out?

I'm assuming you've seen this episode before. It's a classic episode with two classic scenes: one in the brown derby in the first act, with William Holden trying to out-stare Lucy, then the nose thing in the second act. And there's great dialogue through out. Basically a full half-hour of almost non-stop laughs.

They may have cut it out, but I seem to recall some bit of dialogue where Lucy explains she's going to try to run through the apartment really fast before they notice she's not Superman. That episode was a pretty odd selection. It's not one of the stronger ones.

tlc38tlc38 05-18-2015, 06:56 PM I've said this before and I'll probably say it again but I am a true TV purist but I do enjoy seeing these episodes in color.
Simply put, it's just plain fun and it's awesome that CBS is doing this to keep Lucy's legacy alive and thriving. Lucy lives on...and now in color for generations to come!
Bonniegirl 05-18-2015, 07:13 PM I thought it was a blast. I loved it! The Hollywood ep., the scene where she was wearing the glasses and the fake nose was so vibrant in color! I loved her glasses. I thought they were really cute and becoming on her actually. They looked like cool glasses a young girl might wear these days! When her "nose" caught on fire, it really was funny in color!
The Superman ep. Well it's funny they played that one as you said Little Ricky 11 but I'm glad they did. That is one of my personal favorite eps.! I am also a Superman fan. I have a little crush on the original Superman, George Reeves. I love the part when the couple come to see the vacant apartment. I always loved that lady, I think she played on Batman? And of course Larry Mondello's Mom on LITB! When she sees Lucy in the window , and the husband, goes through the shtick --- Was it a bird? Was it a plane? And she says No it was Superman!!! It was really cool too , seeing the Ricardo's apartment in color! It looked bigger!

I loved the look of the Hollywood suite. And seeing Fred's shirt in color I thought made it funnier than B&W. I've been somewhat of a B&W purist, but seeing that made me realize there are some things that are funnier in color.
And yes, that was Madge Blake from Batman and Leave It to Beaver. Her role in "Lucy and Superman" was very age appropriate, as opposed to playing Larry's mother. She was 59 when she began playing Mrs. Mondello. Somehow she made it worked and seemed believable (I loved her in that role), but a 59 year old with a 7 year-old kid? Incidentally, she was on I Love Lucy again this morning on MeTV. The was the hat saleslady in "Ricky Loses His Temper."
Smilings 05-18-2015, 11:31 PM Fred's green shirt was much funnier in color.
And Ethel's green dress was beautiful. They really have the colors looking good.
It was the top 3 rated show of the night.
I hope CBS makes a weekly show of color I Love Lucy.
Wouldn't that be great? Each Sunday at 8, two new episodes in color.

I would love that, too, but I know two of the three executive producers. They're big Lucy fans, and this colorization project, for them, is a labor of love. They also did the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour and Lucy Show DVDs. They put a tremendous amount of effort into these projects to get it right. For example, for the Hollywood episode, they were researching colors at the actual hotel in Beverly Hills that the fictional Beverly Palms was based on (the Beverly Carlton). They were digging up old color photos, where possible, and any information they could get their hands on to see what the colors of the costumes and props were. And given that certain color schemes were used on the set for the purpose of filming the best B&W images -- color schemes that wouldn't actually look very good on color film -- they sometimes have had to take some liberties and determine what is most appropriate for color, not only for a good look in color, but a look that would have been common in a place like that in the 1950s (historical accuracy). For example, the Brown Derby colors should be the actual colors of the Brown Derby in 1954-55, not the actual colors of the set (which might have been gray). So that means asking the question, had the show been filmed in color, what colors would have been used? The long and short of it is that it's a lot of work, a lot of research, a lot of discussion, and I don't think it would be possible to crank out two episodes a week and get the same wonderful results we saw Sunday night. I wish it were that easy, but it's not.
tlc38tlc38 05-19-2015, 01:15 PM I would love a weekly hour of Lucy in color! ;)
I think it would lose its specialness if it were on that much. I'm happy with 1 or 2 episodes a year....that way it's more of an event.
Smilings 05-19-2015, 01:34 PM My cat avatar is cute but I can't take credit for it.
Another example of color adding to comedy. In Chocolate Factory, remember the set was very bare. A plain room. Your eye was drawn to the contrast between the pink uniforms and the brown gobs of chocolate. Without color, the chocolate would be gray on gray and hard to see.
Colorization technology can do the job. If producers want to, they can make it look great. (it's not colorization, but Mad Men looks more like the 1960's than shows made in the 60's)
I applaud the producers for doing such a great job.
I hope they make a Lucy in Color hour a regular series. It might not cost too much because the basic Lucy apartment set is already done.
It would be an event if it was once a week, like the original show was.
I'd certainly watch each week and buy the DVDs.
ILuvCarolBurnett 05-19-2015, 02:16 PM I would watch ILL every Monday night if CBS decided to give an entire season (or full year) of airing a one-hour prime-time block. It would be nice to show an example to these clods who write sitcoms today. CBS can axe any two of their current dull sitcoms to make way for one hour once a week of the crown jewel of all sitcoms.
LittleRickyII 05-19-2015, 04:06 PM Here's an example of what I'm talking about when I mentioned all the extensive work and research involved in colorizing these episodes. This is a comment today from Thomas Watson, one of the producers of the special:
"One of the things we all hated to cut was the opening to "LA at Last." Rick Carl did a mountain of research for us, providing color information for ALL THE CARS ON THE FREEWAY !!!"
How's that for accuracy and attention to detail?

TeeVeeCloset 05-19-2015, 06:21 PM I LOVED Color Lucy too, Please someone post if Target or another store has sometype of release like Target had a exclusive extra disc bundle for "The Candy Factory" with the already released "Christmas/Italian Movie/Scotland" release days after it aired last Christmas 2014.
It's nice but since they air as one seemless episode, on the DVD's they are Unedited in color and separate with each getting it's opening & closing plus the original black & white versions!
Superman was great, but to have less edits in "LA @ Last" it had at approx 4 minutes edited out, including Fred announcing he had an apartment for rent & Lucy arguing with Caroline about the numerical day of the week difference between the two boys birthdays....always a funny scene.
The producers quote seems odd as with todays colorization, the computer knows exactly what color something was originally, so that is why the set of the brown derby was different than the actual.
Lastly it was so clear, that even though I have seen all of them over 100 or more times each, I never noticed in "LA @ Last" that Fred's napkin drops to the floor shortly ater putting it on his lap and it remains for the entire scene clear as day never to be picked up.
Hazel Anyday 05-19-2015, 10:11 PM I love colorization and have had that same experience, that is noticing a particular detail (or several details) when the show's in color as opposed to the drab b/w version. I would definitely love if Lucy were shown in WEEKLY hour long colorized blocks. My only recommendation, show them with their original openings and closings for each separate episode. Instead of using only one opening and one closing. As for being satisfied if only 2 Lucy's were colorized once each year I'd have to live to 120 to see the whole series! Not good.:(
Smilings 05-20-2015, 12:22 AM Hazel Anyday, you're right. It would be better as separate episodes.
And more complete.
I wonder why they edit out scenes. Do we have more ads today?
I bet CBS would make a fortune colorizing all Lucy.
I also agree they should colorize the Honeymooners too.

I think this answers a question I had: it was very noticeable to me that they cut this entire opening scene, of the arrival--so this was NOT colorized (right?)--so there will NOT be an unedited DVD version of this episode. Personally, I would have liked to see this included, as it is on the syndication print, and (leave) cut the restored extraneous dialog at the beginning. I'm sure the Superman episode was edited also--I don't remember where, because as everyone has said, this wasn't a memorable episode.

Please read my post 40 for answer to what was cut in "Lucy/Superman" plus a computer knows what colors were originally by the minor shades of grey, white and black. Colorization has always worked this way, yes it was horrible in the 80's but so were home computers.
LittleRickyII 07-17-2015, 01:07 AM The producers quote seems odd as with todays colorization, the computer knows exactly what color something was originally, so that is why the set of the brown derby was different than the actual.
a computer knows what colors were originally by the minor shades of grey, white and black. Colorization has always worked this way,
This is absolutely false. Shades of gray are nothing but shades of gray; they are not a code for identifying colors. A computer cannot know what the colors should be in a black and white film. It only knows what color the technician has programmed the computer to associate with a particular object. There is a tremendous amount of human legwork involved in determining what the colors should be.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_colorization
The technician selects a color for each object based on (1) common "memory" colors such as blue sky, white clouds, flesh tones and green grass, and (2) based on any known information about the movie. For example, if there are color publicity photos or props from the movie available to examine, authentic colors may be applied. (3) In the absence of any better information, the technician chooses a color that fits the gray level and that the technician feels is consistent with what a director might have chosen for the scene. The computer software then associates a variation of the basic color with each gray level in the object, while keeping intensity levels the same as in the monochrome original. The software then follows each object from frame to frame, applying the same color until the object leaves the frame. As new objects come into the frame, the technician must associate colors to each new object in the same way as described above.

This did not sound right to me, either--no offense to the original poster! I read up on the processes in Wiki, and they do have to have something to go by, or make a selective choice. To change the subject--if anyone finds this on DVD ANYWHERE, please post here! I really would like to see the full colorized episodes.

Same here. "LA at Last!" is my favorite episode and I would love to have the colorized version in my possession.
