It's clear this is what happened to him with Gilligan, but I personally see him more as Maynard Krebs, just because that character is more awesome.

If there was a channel that would show Dobie Gillis and Gilligan back-to-back, over time Bob Denver would become more fondly remembered for Maynard Krebs. The problem is just that Gilligan's Island was a local syndicated television institution in the 1970s and Dobie Gillis wasn't.
