Necco 02-08-2015, 08:41 PM The Isdal Woman Raoul Wallenberg Toynbee Tiles The Galapagos Affair Connie Smith wiseguy182 02-09-2015, 12:49 AM Connie Smith For a minute there, I thought you meant the country singer. I'm sure you're referring to this. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/smith_connie.html Definitely an intriguing one. unsolved1981 02-09-2015, 06:21 AM Don't have a top 5 exactly, but I'd really like to see this one on UM: Aaron Cody Stepp http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/stepp_aaron.html Stepp came from a troubled family, and his aunt was granted custody of him while his mother was in jail on a theft rap. The day before Stepp's mother was to be released from jail, and would naturally want to see her son, the aunt reports Cody missing - this despite the fact that no one can remember seeing the son for over a year prior. Police check the house and there is no sign that a young kid had been living there. His mother also testified that whenever she would call from prison, her mother and aunt would not let her speak to Cody. They were also receiving $279 a month in welfare benefits because of the child. Then it turns out that the grandmother may have previously beat to death a daughter of hers in 1964 and the whole thing looks terribly sinister. But one problem with the case is that that since he was reported missing both the aunt and grandmother have died, leaving the mother incredulous as to what happened. The main 2 theories are that either the aunt or grandmother beat Cody to death, or that they sold him to another family. LilMissKryssy 02-11-2015, 03:39 PM This is a little to new for Unsolved Mysteries (2005) but hands down this case has haunted me ever since I read about it... I recently read it myself and it stuck out for the sheer oddity of it all. You too? I seriously was just lost for words when I read about this case. A broken up couple randomly and at the last minute decide to meet up at a bar and walk out to leave and they as well as the truck are never seen again. So bizarre. I REALLY want this one solved LooksLikeCRicci 02-11-2015, 10:15 PM I'm with the majority. I lean towards a professional hit. Probably by the ex husband. I wonder if they buried the truck ala Lisa Kimmel. I really hate the compactor theory. I hope they were deceased if/when that happened. 88keys 02-11-2015, 11:27 PM Maura Murray I agree about Dylatov Pass, even though other shows have covered it. LilMissKryssy 02-12-2015, 12:05 AM I'm with the majority. I lean towards a professional hit. Probably by the ex husband. I wonder if they buried the truck ala Lisa Kimmel. I really hate the compactor theory. I hope they were deceased if/when that happened. I was thinking that at first too but the thing that gets me is that Richard and Danielle had already been broken up and it was by all accounts a very random last minute meet up. So, for me that's where the hit man hired by the ex husband theory is hard to fathom. Of course, it's possible but it's just the randomness of that night. I wonder if anyone saw them actually get into the truck and leave or if they just saw then exiting the bar heading for the truck. Corkys-Place 02-12-2015, 04:58 AM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yubtfPrfSr0 That story is by far the strangest case I have ever heard of. Two teachers at war with one another in the Pocono Mountains. The victim claims her coworker tried to destroy her, while the forensic evidence pointed elsewhere. WEIRD case. Fascinating. What do you guys think? I just watched it then. To do all those things to yourself you'd have to be mentally ill. I'm seeing shades of the Cindy James case here. LilMissKryssy 02-12-2015, 11:18 AM Bethanie Lynne Dougherty This case isn't to far from me, its a couple hours away and it in an extremely remote location. This would've been a perfect story for UM. Apparently she usually got up around 3am for her early morning job at a continent store and her habit was to go outside and have a cigarette when she got up in the morning. Still so creepy. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/dougherty_bethanie.html http://www.websleuths.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-62983.html tarheelslim 02-13-2015, 11:47 AM I keep trying to come up with a list but it keeps coming out like this: 1) The Springfield Three 2) The Springfield Three 3) The Springfield Three 4) The Springfield Three 5) The Springfield Three 88keys 02-13-2015, 04:50 PM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yubtfPrfSr0 That story is by far the strangest case I have ever heard of. What do you guys think? I think it's pretty obvious that the "victim" did it to herself, what with the DNA evidence and her like about the glue stick. Isn't there a personality disorder where people always want to be victims and be the center of attention? LooksLikeCRicci 02-13-2015, 07:49 PM I think it's pretty obvious that the "victim" did it to herself, what with the DNA evidence and her like about the glue stick. Isn't there a personality disorder where people always want to be victims and be the center of attention? Histrionic personality disorder. I didn't watch the video. Is this the one that was profiled on Forensic Files? "Sealed with a Kiss" was the name of the ep? 1990 UM fan 02-14-2015, 12:02 AM 1. The Springfield Three (in full) 2. Etan Patz (surprised they never covered his case, as his case was very public and was the first missing child to be posted on a milk carton) 3. Girly Chew Hossencofft (murdered by crazy husband and his mistress) 4. Kyle Clinkscales (disappeared in 1976 and featured on an 1989 special alert) 5. What do you guys think? I've watched this one several times. Not sure what to make of it. Reminds me of the Circleville Letter case, where allegedly as some think, Mary Gillespie wrote the letters and set up the whole thing to push blame on Paul Freshour, her former brother-in-law. Both cases are strange and histrionic, having the whole set-up thing to blame someone else. UMFaninMD 02-14-2015, 09:58 PM I think old school UM would have done justice on these cases: Keddie Murders Frankford Slasher Texarkana Phantom Killer Dyatlov Pass Incident The Lyon Sisters (the one where an eyewitness saw the girls with a man who had a tape recorder inside a briefcase outside a mall before they both disappeared, and was seen having young girls speak into the recorder outside other malls) wiseguy182 02-15-2015, 12:53 AM The Etan Patz mystery was recently solved. He and his parents deserved justice. No it hasn't. His body has never been found. Nobody has been convicted. I do agree his parents deserve justice. BlueGalexy 02-15-2015, 03:58 AM I keep trying to come up with a list but it keeps coming out like this: 1) The Springfield Three 2) The Springfield Three 3) The Springfield Three 4) The Springfield Three 5) The Springfield Three I know exactly where you're coming from slim! Even though it was profiled on UM, I felt that way about the Mike Emert murder for many years. Fortunately for Mr. Emert's loved ones, new information came about back in 2011 that apparently brought somewhat of a resolution to the case. http://m.kirotv.com/news/news/former-spd-cop-suspected-hit-man/nDNJ3/ As far as cases that I would have liked to see covered by UM, there are a few missing persons that come to mind. Starting with the disappearance of Jeffrey Zoltowski. I realize that at first glance this case appears to be pretty cut and dried, but there's just something about it that gets my imagination going. I just can't help but find his last interaction with the DLNR pilot to be highly suspect. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/z/zoltowski_jeffrey.html I also would have liked to have seen the John Glasgow case covered. This case has at least been profiled by other true crime shows. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/g/glasgow_john.html I believe that had it been possible, the old school UM could have done a good segment on the Barbara Bolick disappearance. Normally I'm able to speculate on what I believe most likely happened to the missing person, but this case baffles me to no end. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bolick_barbara.html Last but not least, I would have liked to see the Mike Williams case covered, if for no other reason than I'd like to see it get as much media coverage as possible. I do not buy for a moment any of the “eaten by alligators" dribble that surrounds his case. IMO, that laughable theory was put out there by the people in his life who allegedly have something to hide. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/w/williams_jerry.html wiseguy182 02-15-2015, 03:02 PM You're not up to date with the news: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/30/nyregion/in-etan-patz-murder-case-high-hurdles-for-each-side.html What the hell are you talking about? The mystery is not, I repeat, NOT solved. Until he or his body is found, the possibility still exists he is alive somewhere (though I think that is unlikely, sadly.) The suspect you linked to isn't even the main suspect in the case, that would be Jose Antonio Ramos, who also confessed to several people, independently of one another, and had a history of abusing boys that fit Etan's profile. You're not up to date on reality. Oh, and Ramos also knew him and knew his bus route. Retro4Life 02-15-2015, 05:28 PM How about the Dennis Martin case? That's a really haunting and tragic one. http://raven-talesoftheweird.blogspot.com/2012/09/missing-persons.html Retro4Life 02-15-2015, 05:44 PM I hope the show is brought back. To be perfectly honest, I don't enjoy television today. Dumb "reality" shows and silly celebrities are taking over entertainment. Sorry, but I would rather watch Nick@Nite and TV Land any day. Someone mentioned the possibility of Jonathan Frakes hosting UM. I think that would be great. QFT. wiseguy182 02-17-2015, 07:04 AM I think this is approximately the bajillionth thread on this subject. Shirley Brickley, member of the music group The Orlons, who had hits such as "Don't Hang Up", was shot and killed at her home in Philadelphia by an unknown intruder in 1977. Why do the police seem so convinced it was a murder-for-hire plot? The fact that neither they nor the truck was found and that there was no sign of foul play makes me think they had an accident and that they are most likely at the bottom of a river or other body of water. crystaldawn 02-28-2015, 06:41 PM The arguing needs to stop! This is ridiculous! Wiseguy if you don't agree with someone posts I suggest you find a nice way to discuss it or keep it to yourself. SheRaaa 03-01-2015, 05:21 PM I just finished reading the great book "After Etan," about the Patz case, which I am very surprised never appeared on UM. Patz is like THE quintessential American horror story; young cherubic child disappears on very short walk to catch school bus, forever changing America. Anyway, I'm actually surprised someone (who is not Ramos) is being charged with Patz's murder. I read the article linked above, and it seems like the guy going to trial is basically some local crazy who seems (to me) to just have made a wacko confession to a notorious crime. Ramos, on the other hand: -confessed to authorities that he took Etan into his home, molested him, then "sent him off on the subway" (yeah right) -Ramos' girlfriend at the time of the Patz abduction was a woman who was sort of Etan's babysitter...she walked him home from the school bus many days. So, Ramos had a direct connection to Etan. -Ramos molested this woman's son, as well as many other children; he was even convicted of raping a young boy in the past. -When jailhouse snitches were planted in Ramos' cell, he did not deny molesting Etan. Laura77 03-01-2015, 08:13 PM The mystery of what happened to Dennis Martin has intrigued me for years. Trenny Lynn Gibson vanished from the Smokey Mountains on a school field trip in 1976. kinghere1 03-01-2015, 09:55 PM Here's some I've not heard much about, but really creepy none the less. 1. Annette Sagers (and daughter) - Mom disappeared and car found parked in front of bus stop. Almost a year later daughter disappears from same bus stop. Note left for Dad was found at bus stop. 2. Laureen Rahn - Girl goes to sleepover, disappears, mom discovers three phone calls to California hotel, one of which is famous for "adult" movie production. 3. Diane Augat - Woman disappears, then body parts and other personal items found in place she disappears at various times years later. 4. Hannah Truelove - Girl tweets that she is being stalked, disappears and later found dead. 5. Jessica Chambers - Fairly recent case from Mississippi of girl being burned alive. Killer is still at large, but people in town saying it was the guy who runs the convenient store who apparently has gang ties. Laura77 03-09-2015, 07:49 PM The disappearance of Anna Christian Waters from California in 1973. Have you, by chance, read the "Missing: 411" series? Laura77 03-11-2015, 09:42 PM Have you, by chance, read the "Missing: 411" series? I have read both books by David Paulides, regarding the eastern and western US. I enjoyed them very much and definitely think he's onto something. I don't believe Trenny was taken by a "Wildman", I think her abduction had more to do with a classmate. I think it's entirely possible Dennis was taken by a wild creature. Another woman named Pauline Melton disappeared in 1981. My thoughts are that she wanted to disappear and start over, perhaps with someone else. Have done extensive research on these 3 cases, but Trenny's case was always my pet one. Her cousin and her mother have corresponded with me as well. Have done extensive research on these 3 cases, but Trenny's case was always my pet one. Her cousin and her mother have corresponded with me as well. I've always felt Dennis wandered just far enough away to become disoriented. I think it's possible he may have injured himself in the process of trying to get back to his family. Pauline Melton was a 2 pack/day smoker and was on antihypertensive and antiemetic medication (which she did not have with her) in 1981, and was "barred from driving" during that time (which seems to have all the earmarks of cardiac disease). Additionally, her mother had recently died and she had been taking anti-anxiety meds for her grief-related symptoms just prior to the September trip. I often wonder if her disappearance wasn't related to a medical event she may have experienced. I always felt that if any of the three were ever found, it would be her. Trenny Gibson I've never had a firm opinion about. I thought there was some evidence to indicate a couple of strange men were in the trailhead parking lot at the time. I'd have to go back and check but I seem to remember something about a can of beer and some cigarette butts where the vehicle they were allegedly driving was parked. Dennis Martin disappeared playing with a group of kids who planned to sneak up on the adults of their group and scare them. Dennis vanishes. A group of campers heard a loud sickening scream moments later. Another camper reported seeing a " Wildman" carrying something. The Green Berets are called in to search. With the amount of military combing the park, it makes you wonder if it was really Dennis they were searching for, or something/someone else? All those people tramping through the woods destroyed any potential evidence. His folks always believed he'd been abducted, his Dad passes away here just last fall. Trenny had had an altercation with a classmate a short time before she vanished that culminated in this person showing up at her house in the middle of the night and Trenny's mother shooting him in the foot. Some of the students on the field trip where Trenny disappeared from that day, reported seeing this student following the school bus in his car. The school reported he was in school that day according to attendance records. Trenny was hiking with a fellow classmate and had borrowed his coat. Shortly before she vanished, the two had separated and Trenny was alone, still wearing his coat. Somehow this comb she never parted with, ended up in this student's car. I guess Trenny was never without this comb, she always had it in the right front pocket of her jeans. This student Trenny was hiking with was never allowed to be questioned in depth, according to the Gibson's. I found out later his father/or a family member was a lawyer. The student in question showed up at the Gibson's and told Trenny's sister that "Trenny had run off with some horny hitchhiker". Some cigarette butts and a half empty can of fairly fresh beer was found near to where Trenny disappeared. Scent dogs tracked her scent to an observation tower, then to a stretch of road. I think she was kept at the tower, then walked out to the road and taken out of the park. Her parents also believe she was abducted. Pauline Melton had some health issues, sure, but she volunteered at an old folks home, serving meals to the residents. The staff noticed she didn't sign up for the day she disappeared, and used the phone several times that day, odd for her. Pauline was on her third marriage, and her husband had some health problems. Her mother had also died recently. She had also chatted with her pastor about "people that run around on their spouses". Her husband noticed after she vanished that his Valium was missing. I always thought Pauline walked out on her marriage. I think she had met somebody else and was planning on meeting him the day she vanished, that was why she walked ahead of the others. The other thing was none of her in-laws seemed to be concerned about searching for her. Did they know about the affair, if there was one? Or did they not like Pauline? MegtheEgg86 03-12-2015, 10:12 AM With the amount of military combing the park, it makes you wonder if it was really Dennis they were searching for, or something/someone else? The National Guard is called for exactly those kinds of searches all the time, and I know there are a few SF Guard units. I'm not sure if this was an active duty SF unit from Ft. Bragg or someplace, but I wouldn't find it too surprising. Those guys are pretty good at busting through woods. I had forgotten about the reports of the kid following the bus, and had never known ANY of those details about the altercation prior to her disappearance, so thanks for filling me in on all that. In light of all that information, it does lead one to conclude she was abducted. The only thing I can't see transpiring especially well is the notion of Trenny being held at Clingmans Dome (this is the observation point in question). It's one of the Park's most visited landmarks and Trenny's disappearance happened during one of the peak visitor seasons. It's not like a fire tower--it's actually a huge concrete structure and is the highest elevation point in the park. Yeah, the Melton disappearance never even has seemed to have the same local media attention that the Gibson and Martin disappearances have had (I'm from Knoxville originally). I know Trenny's mother has been very instrumental in keeping her daughter's story in the news, and the Martin disappearance is almost legendary around here. But I think some people are surprised to even hear about Pauline Melton sometimes. All good questions you pose there. I just find it odd that the search for Dennis was on SUCH a large scale for the it's time. The Green Berets were out searching as well on a huge scale while there was a war being fought in Vietnam. They were also armed. I could just be my instinct, but something has always told me they were searching for more than just Dennis Martin. Coincidentally, the lead FBI agent in charge of this case later committed suicide. The weather turned ugly shortly after Trenny went missing, with stong winds and heavy rain. Temperature dipped into the 30's. Some of the students went with a teacher to look for Trenny. Her parents were not notified until later on that she was missing. It took until the 10th of October for the FBI to get involved in her case. With the bad weather and the delay in the search getting started, someone could have taken her almost anywhere. Perhaps her abductor/s just paused at Clingman's Dome for a moment, then continued on. One of the kids on the trip said that "Trenny paused for a moment and looked at something off the trail, when I looked again, she was gone". I have seen photos of where she was last seen and you'd have to be a blithering idiot to step off that trail voluntarily! Again, I think Pauline had walked out on her marriage and that is why her disappearance was kind of hushed up. It also could of been because LE figured she had a health episode and passed away somewhere out there. Good discussion, btw, thank you!:) tarheelslim 03-12-2015, 02:27 PM Laura77, sounds like you've read Unsolved Disappearances in the Great Smoky Mountains too... great book (which also has a big section on Brad Bishop). neognosis 03-12-2015, 02:39 PM I have read both books by David Paulides, regarding the eastern and western US. Her cousin and her mother have corresponded with me as well. bigfoot did it  Laura77 03-12-2015, 06:43 PM Laura77, sounds like you've read Unsolved Disappearances in the Great Smoky Mountains too... great book (which also has a big section on Brad Bishop). Yes, I bought that book about 10 years ago and love it. Read a lot about Brad Bishop, not sure if he's still alive but would love to see him brought to justice for what he did. Richard Petrone and Danielle Imbo http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/p/petrone_richard.html http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/i/imbo_danielle.html Best in depth article about the case.. http://www.phillymag.com/articles/without-a-trace-imbo-petrone/ http://6abc.com/news/after-10-years-still-no-sign-of-richard-petrone-and-danielle-imbo/511669/ When the car goes missing too, I always wonder if they accidentally drove into a lake or something. That's happened so many times when the car is gone too. DazzlerSparkler 03-13-2015, 06:14 PM I know it would never be considered an unsolved mystery but had they not caught who did it I think the case of Greg Smart would have made an interesting case. Granted we all know it was Pamela Smart but still.... The murder of Yasuko Watanabe would make an excellent case. For those who do not know, Yasuko was an economic researcher at an electric company who secretly moonlighted as a prostitute by night. She was found strangled in a vacant apartment in 1997. The interesting thing about this case was that she kept a journal of all her clients, including dates, times, and fees. neognosis 03-14-2015, 01:30 AM loveland frog. Is that Yasuko Watanabe in your Avatar? WishfulDreamer 03-15-2015, 03:58 PM Trenny had had an altercation with a classmate a short time before she vanished that culminated in this person showing up at her house in the middle of the night and Trenny's mother shooting him in the foot. I lean toward an abduction and I would bet that the student is involved somehow. If he himself wasn't the one who actually abducted her, he could have had friends do something. Showing up at her house and being shot in the foot by her mother? Threatening her? Being seen following the bus? Making up a story about her running off with a hitchhiker when he shouldn't have even been there that day? It's too shady. Attendance records can be wrong. I had teachers who would not pay attention and just mark people present. He also could have been there initially and then slipped out. It really shouldn't be enough to clear him 100%. Also, did anyone remember him sitting in class all day? Why would several students report him following the bus if he wasn't? What better way to act on a vendetta on someone than abduct them from a field trip in the mountains...where inevitably their disappearance will probably be written off as a lost in the woods type of scenario? She was definitely abducted and if the students in question weren't behind it, then they know more than what they were telling. The comb for one thing. It apparently ended up in a student's car. Did he find it on the trail and pick it up? Or did he keep it as a trophy? I have also been told Trenny was walking alone and ahead of the others because she may have had a bad feeling something wasn't right, and wanted to head back to the parking lot to maybe let their teacher/supervisor know. When Trenny disappeared, he claimed he had gone off on his own to "track a bear". The Gibson's were extremely frustrated that the police never seemed to be "allowed " to question this student in depth, he just stuck to the fact that he went tracking a bear. And the police seemed to buy it. As mentioned before I am told he had a lawyer in the family. The student that was seen following the bus, has been in trouble with the law several times over the years, although not with something as severe as murder. The student that had her comb I can find very little about, his first and last names are very common. Trenny took nothing with her that day except her bagged lunch. She had left her purse, books in her mother's car and had left several hundred dollars she was saving in a drawer at home. There was no reason for her to run away, and the students had no prior knowledge of where they were going to go for the field trip. I know the student that was shot by Trenny's mother wanted to date Trenny very badly, I'm told. She did not feel the same way about him. Race was also an issue, remember, this was 1976. Did this make him snap? The student that Trenny was hiking with, loaned her his coat. They sat and ate their lunches together. He said she gave him part of her sandwich, so he didn't think she was planning on taking off anywhere. She was wearing his coat when she vanished. Sometime after that, the comb in question ended up in his car, but according to the Gibson's he wasn't questioned about it. DazzlerSparkler 03-18-2015, 06:18 PM Is that Yasuko Watanabe in your Avatar? Haha no. Its Sada Abe, who murdered her lover by slicing off his member. She was later exonerated and disappeared from public view but not before releasing her memoirs. If you've ever heard of the film 'In The Realm of the Senses,' the Sada Abe case is based off of it. mozartpc27 03-23-2015, 02:26 PM When the car goes missing too, I always wonder if they accidentally drove into a lake or something. That's happened so many times when the car is gone too. I'm from the area, have been to the bar they were at that night a few times (although I don't think I've been there since they disappeared). Although that section of Philadelphia is just a few blocks from the Delaware River and about 20-25 blocks from the Schuylkill River, it would be very hard for someone to drive into either without it being obvious they had done so. They were both from South Jersey if memory serves, where there is more of a possibility something like that might have happened... but in Philly, in that area... no way to do it without it being detected I wouldn't think. |
